A note on the equivalence between the conditional uncorrelation and the independence of random variables

Opis:
It is well known that while the independence of random variables implies zero correlation, the opposite is not true. Namely, uncorrelated random variables are not necessarily independent. In this note we show that the implication could be reversed if we consider the localised version of the correlation coefficient. More specifically, we show that if random variables are conditionally (locally) uncorrelated for any quantile conditioning sets, then they are independent. For simplicity, we focus on the absolutely continuous case. Also, we illustrate potential usefulness of the stated result using multiple examples.

Opis:
Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising technology for wireless communication networks. Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) is a strong candidate for VLC-based applications. The predominant source of bit error in OCDMA is the multiple access interference (MAI). To eliminate MAI in synchronous OCDMA, zero cross correlation (ZCC) codes have been proposed. However, synchronization problems and multipath propagation introduce relative non-zero time delays. Therefore, the zero correlation zone (ZCZ) concept was introduced. In this paper, we propose a new method for generating ZCC codes. The proposed construction can accommodate any number of users with flexible Hamming weight. The numerical results obtained show that the proposed codes significantly reduce MAI, compared to ZCC, as well as ZCZ codes.

Opis:
Correlation analysis is one of the tools that can be used when examining the relationship between quantitative and qualitative variables in international relations. To carry it out, it is important to meet the necessary assumptions regarding a given correlation coefficient. Several of the most used coefficients are presented, broken down into quantitative, ordinal, and nominal variables. The aim of the study was to present the use of correlation analysis on the example of selected economic and non-economic aspects of Polish-German relations. Trade and the structures of the two countries’ European trade partners were shown to be strongly correlated using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. In turn, using the chi-square test of independence, it was also found that there is no statistically significant relationship between Germans residing in one of the former German states and maintaining contacts with Poland. A model for subjective analysis of relationships and influences was also proposed. Consequently, it is suggested that statistical methods should be used more frequently in the study of international relations as a complement to classical descriptive methods.

Opis:
Digital volume correlation is an image-based technique for internal 3D displacement and strain fields measurement or analysis widely used in the field of experimental mechanics. A widely used correlation function (criterion) of digital volume correlation is Pearson correlation function, which suffers from the problem of the acquired data being contaminated by salt-and-pepper noise and monotonic nonlinear distortion of the light intensity. In this work, a 3D correlation function called the Spearman correlation function is used to deal with those interferences. A numerical experiment shows that the performance of Spearman correlation function using integer-pixel registration in an environment with 10% salt-and-pepper noise is better than that of Spearman and Pearson correlation functions using sub-pixel registration in an environment with 1% salt-and-pepper noise. As the light intensity distortion is significant, the error of Pearson correlation function is considerable; meanwhile, the error of Spearman correlation function is small. In conclusion, Spearman correlation function is, in particular, practical and useful in digital volume correlation.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between grain yield and selected traits in maize linear Pearson correlation coefficients and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients. The study comprised of 13 maize cultivars, evaluated at two years in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The linear and rank correlation coefficients were shown in tables and as figures for easier observation of their tendency and significance.
Celem badań było zastosowanie współczynników korelacji liniowej Pearsona i rangowej Spearmana do oceny współzależności pomiędzy plonem ziarna i wybranych cech kukurydzy.

Opis:
The Polish-German project QUEST aims at studying relativistic quantum spin correlations of the Einstein-Rosen-Podolsky-Bohm type, through measurement of the correlation function and the corresponding probabilities for relativistic electron pairs. The results will be compared to theoretical predictions obtained by us within the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics, based on assumptions regarding the form of the relativistic spin operator. Agreement or divergence will be interpreted in the context of non-uniqueness of the relativistic spin operator in quantum mechanics as well as dependence of the correlation function on the choice of observables representing the spin. Pairs of correlated electrons will originate from the Mo/ller scattering of polarized 15 MeV electrons provided by the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC, TU Darmstadt, incident on a Be target. Spin projections will be determined using the Mott polarimetry technique. Measurements (starting 2013) are planned for longitudinal and transverse beam polarizations and different orientations of the beam polarization vector w.r.t. the Mo/ller scattering plane. This is the first project to study relativistic spin correlations for particles with mass.

Opis:
Correlation coefficient is a well known measure of (linear) dependence between random variables. In his textbook published in 1980 L.T. Kubik introduced an analogue of such measure for random events A and B and studied its basic properties. We reveal that this measure reduces to the usual correlation coefficient between the indicator functions of A and B. In consequence the resuts by Kubik are obtained and strenghted directly. This is essential because the textbook is recommended by many universities in Poland.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to present a retrospective analysis of taxation in thecontext of public debt in the years 1995–2013. The author attempts to verify thehypothesis according to which there is correlation of various degrees of significanceand various directions between taxes and the debt of the general government sectorof the EU Member States. The study of those correlations was preceded by ananalysis that indicated tendencies to diminish tax burdens which was a result of„copying” tax policy and simultaneously increase sources and change character ofthe causes of increasing public debt. Out of 25 states where the correlation betweentwo major groups of taxes in GDP and public debt was proved, in 15 states thedimension of the interdependence was positive, while in the remaining 10 – negative. In the first group the lower (higher) tax burdens were, the lower (higher) thepublic debt was. Therefore it might be inferred that the tax rate below or abovewhich the budget income moves was not exceeded. As far as the remaining 10countries are concerned (those with negative correlation), it might be suggestedthat the critical point of decreasing (increasing) taxes below (above) which theincome drops was exceeded. Both the descriptive analysis of the indices and statisticalexamination make it possible to verify the adopted hypothesis positively, indicating simultaneously the necessity for further examination.
