Opis:
The main source of vibration in the engine piston is the work of the piston – crank, and swapping reciprocating motion to the rotary motion. In this paper are described among others the crankshaft vibration which result in the occurrence of cyclic forces such as forces pressure of gas and inertia forces. In addition were made the analysis of longitudinal vibration of the crankshaft, which are these vibrations are an important problem in high-power vessels’ engines. Regardless of the dynamic system in which the engine is running the greatest threat for crankshaft are the torsional vibrations. The possibilities of vibration damping of the crankshaft in the engine also were discussed.

Opis:
Nowadays, growing attention is directed towards energy efficiency and issues related to respecting energy. An extremely vital role at improving energy efficiency plays the cogeneration technologies. In the 2012/27/UE Directive [1], the gas turbines [2] in combination with heat recovery, combustion engines [3, 4], steam engines [4], fuel cells [5-7], microturbines [8], Rankine organic cycle [9, 10], Stirling engines [11-15], and others, were included among cogeneration technologies, in which electric energy is produced from waste heat in the combined process. In this work, the distributed generation sources have also been addressed. From the perspective of the article herein, the sources equipped with the crankshaft assembly have been particularly emphasised. This mechanism converts chemical energy of, among others, fuel or working element into mechanical energy (the piston reciprocating motion is converted into rotary motion of a crankshaft). In this work, the physical model of the crankshaft assembly has been shown, with two degrees of freedom. On the basis of analysis of the physical model (with the static mass reduction), a single-piston simulation model has been developed of the crankshaft assembly, using the Matlab&Simulink software. On the basis of the analysis of the system, the motion equations have been derived, which served the purpose of building the simulation model. Because of the conducted simulations, the curves of displacement, velocity, and piston acceleration have been presented, and, respectively, the angular displacement, angular velocity, and angular acceleration of the crankshaft. The constructed model should be seen as a part of a multi-piston working mechanism in a, for example, Stirling engine.

Opis:
In the paper, the measurement of the marine diesel engine crankshaft residual stresses is presented. The hole drilling strain gauge was chosen because of its simplicity and low cost. Moreover, deflection calculation was made for the load corresponding to its weight and the concentrated force in the chosen bearing conditions. Deflection of the journal and bending rigidity under the concentrated force was calculated as well. In that case, the crankshaft was supported in the neighbouring crank journals. The reduced stresses were calculated according to the Huber – Mises hypothesis. The residual stresses were measured in the marine diesel engine crankshaft type 12V38 after the finishing, with the hole-drilling method. It was found that the residual stresses reach the maximal value of 86 MPa, but for 50% of measuring points, the residual stresses did not exceed the value of 20 MPa. The squeezing stresses were found to be dominant. The measurement results provided important data for further consideration, especially for the correction of the bending deformation of the produced crankshaft.

Large machinery parts, containing complexes of cylindrical surfaces, e.g. crankshafts or distributionshafts require fulfillment of specific measurement conditions. These conditions should assure elimination of shaft deflection caused by its own weight. The paper presents a system for measurements of geometrical deviations with a controlled force of the crankshaft elastic support. The mentioned system object allows eliminating elastic deformations of the measured object. The basic components together with principles of operation are described. The paper also presents an original subsystem of elastic support control in which the supplying medium pressure is regulated by the loading force value. For the case when the measured detail was supported in V-blocks, application of transforming the measured profile into a real one is described. The performed research confirm that the described system is fully useful for complex measurements of geometrical conditions of machinery parts containing cylindrical surfaces.

Opis:
Dynamic analyses of marine structures are one of the most important during design process as well as during exploitation. Typically, two parts of vibrations calculations are performed. Firstly, natural vibrations frequencies and modes are determined. Forced vibrations analysis is the second step of calculations. Natural vibrations give us information about possibility (e.g. at which main engine speed) of dangerous vibrations amplitudes (resonances threat). Exact values of vibrations amplitudes are results of forced vibrations analysis. Confidence level (error value) of forced vibration calculations is much lower in comparison to uncertainty of natural vibration analysis. What is more, form engineering practice point of view, natural vibrations frequencies estimation (resonance avoidance) is the most important during dynamic analysis of marine structures with propulsion systems. In the paper some examples of dynamic characteristics estimation and their changing methods (possibility) was presented. Utility of relatively simple models, with low degree of freedom number, was discussed. Modelling methods depending on the analysis target of marine slow-speed crankshafts was presented. Advantages and disadvantages of subcritical and supercritical design of marine propulsion system were discussed. An example of propulsion system natural torsional vibrations simplified analysis was presented. Location of the main torsional resonance is one of the most important decisions during design process of the marine propulsion system. Methods of fast and easy estimation as well as changing possibility of natural vibrations frequencies of marine structures is the main objective of presented paper.

Opis:
The basic aim in controlling the diesel engine is to obtain a maximal effective torque for a given fuel dose with keeping at minimum toxic exhaust compounds. This postulate can be realized by matching the appropriate fuel injection timing. In this paper the research results of the control system are presented, which allow for the constant matching of the injection advance in the CI engine to the varying characteristics of the controlled object, that is the engine. Quality factor of the working process which is defined as an effective engine torque, is estimated on the base of the instantaneous crankshaft torsion measurement. This concept, unlike the currently used systems, suggest the use of efficient torque (Me) measurement to generate control quantities, which control the work process of an engine. Realization of such measurements leads to the treatment of the control system as an extreme control unit (maximizing quantitative parameters) as well as an adaptive control system (possibility of unit's reaction on high changes of the parameters influencing the work process of an engine). Combining the idea of the crankshaft torsion measurement with the idea of extreme control, a system can be designed, which makes use of torsion measurement for the adaptive control of the injection timing. The object of the research was a Diesel engine ISUZU Y17DT with electronically controlled injection pump and engine diagnostic system. Realization of the research aim required design and construction of the measurement system of the crankshaft torsion.

Opis:
The rotation of a crankshaft in piston combustion engines results from the acting of tangential forces on the crank, whose value changes with the change of the angle of shaft rotation. This results in torsional vibrations. These vibrations become especially dangerous when the frequency of changes of any components of tangential force is near or equal to the natural frequency of the shaft. It leads to resonant amplification of vibration amplitude and to exceeding the limit values of the angle of shaft torsion. Most often in such cases, various types of torsional vibration dampers are used. In automotive industry, these are usually rubber vibration dampers. Typical torsional vibration damper is an example of a resonant damper, which is designed for the most dangerous resonant frequency of the crankshaft related to the first form of vibration for which the torsional vibrations usually have the greatest amplitude. The design of such a damper involves choosing the inertia moment of the flywheel and the parameters of viscous-elastic element. The article describes the model and the simulation research, which allowed for creating the procedure of designing rubber dampers of torsional vibrations. This procedure can help to reduce the costs of operation tests for the design of optimal torsional vibration damper.

Opis:
The article presents the problem of modelling coupled bending-torsional vibrations in crank systems. Because during the design of modern drive systems a growing number of phenomena are taken into account, model description of such vibrations has a practical meaning. Commonly used models of dynamics of systems assume the independence of torsional and bending vibrations, which leads to simultaneous analysis of transverse and angular vibrations. Further analysis is carried out with the use of superposition principle. Such an approach is justified in the case of quite rigid drive shafts, where vibrations are relatively small. Current trends in the design of reducing weight, reduction of toxic emissions and reducing fuel consumption, lead to the situation where shafts in crank systems become less stiff. Therefore, phenomena neglected earlier may have significant meaning. Analysis of couplings of transverse and torsional vibrations is so important that the occurrence of these phenomena usually leads to new critical states, which may be especially dangerous for engine operation. Considerations on the reasons of the occurrence and kinds of vibration couplings were presented in the introduction of the article. Further part of the article proposes the linear-bending model of the crankshaft, where transverse and angular displacements are dependent. It was tantamount to the assumption of linear relation between the vector of generalized co-ordinates and generalized forces occurring in the system. The next chapter presents the system of equations describing the dynamics of the crankshaft together with a discussion of the co-ordinate system used in the considerations. In addition, there were presented the results of numerical simulations in frequency domain confirming the conclusions taken from the analysis. The whole paper is concluded with synthetic conclusions on the formulated system of equations, simulations and the influence of the coupling on the dynamics of the whole crank system.

Opis:
Purpose: The research aims to study the measuring data comparison between the broken crankshaft and the new crankshaft. The broken crankshaft has been investigated whether to measure dimensions or misalignment value. Therefore, the new crankshaft was measured and compared with a broken crankshaft using a 3D laser scanner. The misalignment value has been related to the overlapping value of a broken crankshaft by using a 3D software application. Design/methodology/approach: The broken crankshaft has been compared with the new crankshaft in contemporary models. The broken crankshaft was produced and assembled from an automobile manufacturer’s factory. It belonged to a particular Diesel engine that fractured while running in normal driving conditions. The broken crankshaft dimension has been investigated to find out the worn-out and misalignment value. The broken crankshaft inspection was measured using a micrometre and a 3D laser scanner application. Both crankshafts were created as artefact 3D models by the 3D laser scanner of the HandySCAN700 model. The accuracy of the 3D laser scanner will be presented in terms of measuring error. Two crankshafts were combined in concentric mate function. The inspection points were carried out at 4 points of each 90° around the main journal diameter, by following the guidelines of crankshaft inspection on a workshop manual basis. The overlapping value of each main journal will be measured by a 3D compare function at 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° respectively. Findings: The results showed the average diameter of the broken crankshaft’s main journal was less than the limit value. A new crankshaft was judged to be needed to be replaced. Moreover, it showed the lowest diameter of main journal No. 2 was 69.890 mm. It carried a 0.06% excessive worn-out value. The measuring error value of the 3D laser scanner was found and required for user-performed calibration procedures. The highest overlapping value was higher than the standard tolerance, up to 117%. It was located at the main journal No. 3 at 180° and near the fractured point of the broken crankshaft. Research limitations/implications: The study of the broken crankshaft inspection was limited to either under-warranty or over-warranty cases. Most of the technicians in authorised automobile dealerships had no intention of performing the inspection process completely. In addition, they were lack of measuring skills and data records. Moreover, automotive manufacturers cannot support the 3D dimension data because it may affect the business’s confidential data leakage. Practical implications: The workshop manual mentioned the crankshaft inspection as a basic tool. In the case of complex components, automotive manufacturers should consider the utilisation of non-contact measuring tools for inspection reference. Originality/value: A reverse engineering technique was applied to scan the broken crankshaft into a 3D model using 3D laser scanning technology, which is used to reduce the measuring time and measuring value error in the inspection process.
