Opis:: Author uses the category of Robert McRuer’s “crip resistance” to think of two waves of disability related protests, which took place in Poland. In 2018 disabled people and their caregivers occupied the Parliament for 40 days to demand higher social security benefits and many people, including those without disabilities, took to the streets to support the protest. In 2020, the Polish Constitutional Tribunal prohibited abortion based on disability status, which caused anger among huge parts of Polish population, including women with disabilities. This article looks at disabled people’s statements made in 2018 in support of the interabled group occupying the Parliament and compares them with disabled women’s voices regarding recent introduction of the ban on abortion based on disability status. I call these five statements made by disabled people “crip testimonies” and analyze how Polish experiences of disability do not fit neatly within Western conceptions of disability developed within disability studies, most prominently, the social and the medical model of disability. In other words, this article pays attention to what is unique about Polish experiences of disability and makes a case for thinking about disability through people’s testimonies, not theories.

Opis:: This paper explores the (de-)constructive and critical role that autism can play in transforming the art of stand-up comedy. Analysing various aspects of audio-visual performance in Hannah Gadsby’s sets, Nanette and Douglas, this paper will attempt to identify a new autistic aesthetics in Gadsby’s performance and examine its differential relation to conventional neurotypical modalities of performing comedy. This paper will also examine how Gadsby revolutionizes and crips comedy to create space for the ‘negative’ affects (anger, tension), traditionally excluded from the domain of stand-up, in order to extract the therapeutic efficacy of ‘connection’ through story-telling.

Opis:: During the quarantines caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, artists without disabilities resorted to tactics considered as appropriate for art and activism by people with disabilities. They cripped artistic practice using strategies that had been developed for years by artists and activists with disabilities. In this essay I intend to analyse examples of such cripping practices. I will take the categories of horizontal aesthetics and bed activism as a starting point in order to point out the tension between temporality and chronicity as decisive in the context of the cripping of art (and other activities in public space). I also intend to point out that the creative strategies in question have deeper roots going back to 20th century neo-avant-garde practices.

Opis:: The article analyzes Queering the Crip, Cripping the Queer (Schwules Museum, Berlin, 2022/2023) – the first international exhibition which centred on the intersections of queer and crip history, culture, and activism. Drawing on the theoretical framework of cultural disability studies, Ojrzyńska examines its key thematic areas, such as inclusion, aesthetic beauty, history, and resistance. Informed by the minoritarian ethics of representation, Queering the Crip… showed how a museum exhibition can serve as a site of inclusivity and a resource for inclusive practices, nurturing solidarity and a sense of connection across various categories of social exclusion, invisibility, and marginalization, with major focus on “quip” identities, to use the neologism put forward by Quiplash. It expanded the Schwules Museum’s reach beyond those members of the queer community who fit in the bodily and mental “norm” as well as stimulating reflection on the place and role of disability in culture and society. In fact, the exhibition presented disability and queerness as identities and alternative ways of being in the world that can intersect and have a strong subversive political, ethical, and aesthetic potential.

Opis:: Celem pracy jest analiza wybranych numerów „SICK Magazine” oraz „Able Zine”, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobów, w jakie przedstawia się w nich niepełnosprawność. Metodologiczne ramy pracy tworzą m.in. teksty Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Roberta McRuera oraz innych przedstawicieli krytycznych studiów o niepełnosprawności. Analizie poddana zostaje wizualna i narracyjna treść omawianych zinów, a także specyfika samego medium.
The aim of the thesis is to analyze selected issues of „SICK Magazine” and „Able Zine”, with a particular focus on the ways in which they portray disability. The methodological framework of the paper includes selected works of Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Robert McRuer and other representatives of the field of critical disability studies. Both the visual and narrative content of the zines is analyzed, as well as the nature of the medium itself.

Opis:: W poniższym eseju Robert McRuer rozwija przemyślenia zawarte we wpływowej książce Crip Theory (2006). Po prześledzeniu queerowej etymologii i historii terminu crip, opisuje uderzające nowe przykłady politycznych, kulturowych i estetycznych strategii „kaleczenia” i przytacza dowody witalności teorii kalectwa jako narzędzia badań naukowych. Rozszerza, za Alice Kafer, kategorię niepełnosprawności, zaliczając do niej formy ucie¬le¬śnienia i stany umysłu wykraczające poza dychotomię pełnosprawny/niepełnosprawny umysłowo/fizycznie. Afir¬muje seksualność osób niepełnosprawnych i kulturę kalectwa. W przeciwieństwie do bardziej asymi¬lacjo¬nistycznej i reformistycznej teorii niepełnosprawności, teoria kalectwa odrzuca paradygmat medy¬czny, ogra¬niczający niepełnosprawność do patologii, którą należy zdiagnozować a następnie leczyć. Nie oczekuje od osób z niepełnosprawnościami przezwyciężania kalectwa ani kompensowania za nie, czyli – w ujęciu Eli Clare – bycia superkalekami. Emancypację widzi raczej w twórczych kulturowo i radykalnych poli¬tycznie wzorcach niepełnosprawności.
In the essay Robert McRuer develops ideas published in his seminal book Crip Theory (2006). After exploring at length the queer etymology and history of the term crip, McRuer provides striking new examples of crip political, cultural, and aesthetic strategies, as well as evidence of the vitality of crip as a tool in academic research. In addition to affirming disabled people's sexuality and crip culture, the essay also expand the notion of disability, invoking Alice Cafer, to include forms of embodiment or states of mind beyond the able-minded or able-bodied/disabled dichotomies. In contrast to the more assimilationist and reformist disability theory, crip rejects the medical paradigm that reduces disability to a pathology that needs to be diagnosed and treated, and that encourages individuals to exert themselves in order to overcome or compensate for their disability (in Eli Clare's words – to become supercrips). Instead, crip seeks emancipatory potential in culturally creative and politically radical paradigms of disability.
