Opis:: This paper gives an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and current work in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). It defines CDA as a transdisciplinary, text-analytical approach to critical social research, aimed at revealing the power imbalance reflected in the use of language and patterns of dominance imposed through the use of language. Describing the most important schools and models in CDA, the paper demonstrates how critical approaches draw on recent developments in different areas of linguistics, such as pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and corpus studies. At the same time, it shows how the interdisciplinary research agenda of CDA attracts the ‘classic’ theories and tools of linguistics to new empirical territories in political/public discourse. The final part of the paper illustrates the explanatory power of the legitimization-proximization model in CDA in a case study of the discourse of the war-on-terror.

Opis:: The concept of four-level context by Ruth Wodak is to provide triangulation and minimize the risk of being biased. Simultaneously the analysis of this concept in combination with the research programme of HDA is an expression of interdisciplinarity’s importance in this approach. One should notice that interdisciplinarity is not an aim itself and it is a subject to limitations. The most specific limitations are those which result from triangulation on the interdiscursive level.

Opis:: The article presents how the discursive discrimination of homosexuals serves nationalism in the contemporary Polish society. Following a brief conceptual location of homophobia within the ideological movement of nationalism, the exemplar homophobic discourse of the Polish nationalists, i.e. that of the League of Polish Families (LPR), is examined through the interdisciplinary method of critical discourse analysis (CDA). In the theoretical part, the sexual minority is applied the status of the “stranger” discussed in cultural sociology; the nationalist is in turn conceptualized as a social-phenomenological actor, who perceives and categorizes the sexual “stranger” by using the knowledge circulating at the Schützean lifeworld. The CDA of the discriminatory discourse of LPR politicians, who represent such homophobic nationalists, attests that homosexuals are mobilized as the “fantasmatic” stranger in today’s Poland.

An outline of the problemsThe text presents the genesis, inspirations, basic assumptions, fields of interest and key concepts of the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in the approachof its founder Norman Fairclough. CDA is a developing, in our country as well, method of discourse analysis, operating in a wide borderlinebetween the humanitiesand social sciences. It emphasizes the social context of the language in use and its relations with the social reality. A methodological and interdisciplinary openness of this approach is an answer to multimodal, complex and often unclear phenomena and socio-cultural structures which contain interwoven themes from various areas and are beyond traditional disciplinary classifications. This area includes politics, religion, economy, media, promotional culture or entertainment. Therefore, CDA can be used in various heterogeneous research areas, also by interdisciplinary research teams made up of specialists from various areas of expertise

Opis:: This article explores the postures of the last three former US presidents towards North Korean nuclear issue. The study applies Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) model as a new approach to examine this topic. By analyzing 17 speech corpuses, this study sheds light on the foreign policy adapted G. W. Bush, Obama, and Trump to address North Korea Nuclear issue. Theoretically, the study uses both Waltz’s foreign policy analysis model and Aristotle modes of persuasion to analyze the findings. It also clarifies the original foundations of each presidents’ foreign policy based on the four American IR school of thoughts. Results indicate that the legacy of the Cold War continues to shape and influence the stances of US presidents toward DPRK, despite the differences in their rhetorical and political strategies. While this study focuses individually on presidents as the main unit of analysis, future studies can further expand the use of CDA analysis to examine the stances of other key decision makers in the presidents’ administration to fully understand the relation between discourses and power structure.
W artykule analizie poddano postawy administracji G. W Busha, Baracka Obamy oraz Donalda J. Trumpa wobec kwestii zagrożenia nuklearnego ze strony Korei Północnej. W badaniu zastosowano model krytycznej analizy dyskursu (CDA) Fairclougha jako nowe podejście do badania tego tematu. Analizując 17 korpusów przemówień, niniejsze badanie rzuca światło na politykę zagraniczną przyjętą przez administracje G. W Busha, Baracka Obamy oraz Donalda J. Trumpa wobec zagrożeń związanych z programem atomowym Korei Północnej. Jako podstawą teoretyczną autorka posłużyła się zarówno modelem analizy stosunków międzynarodowych K. Waltza, jak również perswazją w ujęciu arystotelesowskim. Artykuł ten wyjaśnia również pierwotne podstawy polityki zagranicznej każdego z prezydentów w oparciu o cztery szkoły myślenia amerykańskich badań nad stosunkami międzynarodowymi. Wyniki analizy wskazują, iż dziedzictwo zimnej wojny nadal kształtuje i wpływa na postawy prezydentów USA wobec KRLD, pomimo różnic w ich strategiach retorycznych i politycznych. Podczas gdy niniejsze badanie koncentruje się indywidualnie na urzędzie prezydenckim jako głównej jednostce analizy, przyszłe badania mogą jeszcze bardziej rozszerzyć wykorzystanie analizy CDA np. do zbadania roli i zachowania innych kluczowych członków administracji prezydenckich, aby w pełni zrozumieć związek pomiędzy różnymi dyskursami a strukturą władzy.

Opis:: -Discourse Theory is a heterogeneous ensemble of approaches, which have recently brought some refreshment in the social and political sciences. Although it offers a kind of social ontology based on post-structuralist approach towards language and discourse, it does not provide with a given methodology, ready to use in empirical research. Hitherto prevailing researches have rather looked for empirical exemplifications of the assumed theory, than made their referential strategy clear and convincing. Therefore, an effort of supplementing the theoretical and methodological matrix with some definite research techniques, seems substantial. A more empirically oriented discourse research approaches as Critical Discourse Analysis or even lexicometrical research can be here of a great value. Although a significant differences in ontological assumptions can be observed, a combined research strategies, enabling well proved empirical research appear not impossible to work out and successfully utilise.

Tytuł:: Krytyczna analiza dyskursu wokół polityki antytytoniowej w Polsce
The critical discourse analysis on tobacco control policy

Opis:: Thesis is embedded in the paradigm of critical discourse analysis (CAD), as an innovative approach that combines scientific and socio-political aspects. Theoretical assumptions of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory will be used. Analyses will be conducted on two levels: the discourse level in relation to the concept of symbolic violence, and the level of structural and organizational concept for “the game in the field”.For the main subject of analysis was chosen tobacco control policy and the hidden power relations that shape the discourse. The structure of discourse will be presented – the subject of the discourse, actors and social, political, economic context. In order to o present relationship between international balance of power, and the public debate in Poland, daily press will be analized, trying to indentify hidden influence of each interest group and international argumentative strategies, used by each group – “prohealth” and “protobacco”. Analyses will be made on the example of introduction of smoking ban in public places, which attracted huge media interest.
Praca osadzona w paradygmacie krytycznej analizy dyskursu (KAD), jako innowacyjnego podejścia łączącego w sobie cele naukowe z socjo-politycznymi. Wykorzystane zostaną teoretyczne założenia Pierre’a Bourdieu. Analizy będą prowadzone na dwóch poziomach: na poziomie dyskursywnym w odniesieniu do koncepcji przemocy symbolicznej, oraz na poziomie strukturalno-organizacyjnym w odniesieniu do koncepcji gry w polu. Za główny przedmiot analizy wybrana została polityka antytytoniowa i ukryte relacje władzy, które kształtują dyskurs wobec niej. Scharakteryzowana zostanie struktura dyskursu - przedmiot dyskursu, aktorzy, a także kontekst społeczny, polityczny oraz ekonomiczny. W celu przedstawienia relacji między międzynarodowym układem sił, a przebiegiem debaty publicznej w Polsce, dokonana zostanie analiza prasy codziennej, identyfikująca ukryte wpływy każdej z grup interesu i międzynarodowe strategie argumentacyjne, stosowane przez oba środowiska (prozdrowotne oraz protytoniowe). Analizy dokonane zostaną na przykładzie wprowadzenia zakazu palenia w miejscach publicznych, które wzbudziło spore zainteresowanie mediów.

Opis:: Przedmiotem badania był dyskurs polskich ośrodków władzy wokół polsko-białoruskiego konfliktu granicznego, który rozpoczął się w sierpniu 2021 roku i trwa do dzisiaj. Głównym celem badania było zidentyfikowanie mechanizmów oraz środków dyskursywnych, które pozwoliły władzy na efektywne kształtowanie narracji oraz osiągnięcie dominacji w przestrzeni medialnej. Materiał badawczy skupia się na analizie trzech kluczowych czasopism: „Sieci”, „Do Rzeczy” oraz „Gazety Polskiej” i obejmuje sześćdziesiąt trzy wydania opublikowane między sierpniem a grudniem 2021 roku. Metodologia badania opiera się na krytycznej analizie dyskursu (KAD), z wykorzystaniem koncepcji kontekstu historycznego Ruth Wodak oraz metody trójwymiarowego badania dyskursu Normana Fairclough. Podbudowę teoretyczną pracy stanowi charakterystyka socjologicznych korzeni KAD: teorii krytycznej tzw. szkoły frankfurckiej, teorii działania komunikacyjnego Jürgena Habermasa, teorii modalności władzy Michela Foucault oraz teorii władzy symbolicznej Pierre'a Bourdieu.
The study focuses on the discourse of Polish power centres around the Polish-Belarusian border conflict, which began in August 2021 and continues to the present day. The research aims to identify the mechanisms and discursive tools that enable power structures to effectively shape narratives and dominate the media landscape. The analysis examines three key magazines: "Sieci", "Do Rzeczy" and "Gazeta Polska", covering sixty-three issues published between August and December 2021. Methodologically, the study employs critical discourse analysis (CDA), integrating Ruth Wodak's notion of historical context and Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse research. The theoretical basis of the research is the sociological foundations of CDA, including the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, Jürgen Habermas' theory of communicative action, Michel Foucault's modality of power and Pierre Bourdieu's concept of symbolic power.

Opis:: Przedmiotem badania zaprezentowanego w artykule jest popularny test osobowości Myers-Briggs, a celem wykazanie potencjału, jaki ów test posiada, by być narzędziem reprodukcji władzy i tym samym wpływać na tożsamość człowieka w postmodernistycznych czasach niepewności. Główne wnioski płynące z badania osadzone są w ramach teoretycznych kultury algorytmów powstałej na bazie potrzeby upraszczania rozmaitych elementów świata. Zwracają one uwagę na społeczny wymiar tożsamości oraz proces kwantyfikacji, jakiemu ona podlega. Sprowadzenie osobowości do liczb odbywa się nie tylko na poziomie podziału społeczeństwana 16 typów, ale również m.in. poprzez wykorzystanie skali odpowiedzi w teście, zaprezentowanie cech charakteru za pomocą procentów czy skróty literowe opisujące poszczególne typy. Jako metoda badawcza posłużyła krytyczna analiza dyskursu.
The subject of the study presented in the article is the popular Myers-Briggs personality test, and the goal is to demonstrate the potential that this test has as tool for the reproduction of power and further influence on human identity in postmodern times of uncertainty. Its main conclusions are embedded in the theoretical framework of the culture of algorithms created on the basis of the need to simplify various elements of the world. They draw attention to the social dimension of identity and the process of quantification to which it is subjected. The reduction of personality to numbers is carried out not only at the level of dividing socjety into 16 types, but also, among other things, through the use of an answer scale in a test, the presentation of character traits by percentages or letter abbreviations describing individual types. Critical discourse analysis was used as a research method.
