Opis:
This paper looks at the changes that occurred in the rural area of the Sai Kung Peninsula in Hong Kong's New Territories from the 16th century, and uses it as a case-study to show the complex range of forces that can act on a locale. Throughout its history, land use and economic activities on the Sai Kung Peninsula have been driven to a great extent by non-local factors, including distant warfare leading to mass immigration and political decisions leading to mass emigration. However, once Hong Kong became an important outpost of Britain's colonial empire it became integrated into a global trade network and thus became sensitive to economic and technological changes taking place thousands of miles away. In the 20th century, the Sai Kung Peninsula developed in response to Hong Kong's growth as an international trade hub, finding its agricultural output overwhelmed by cheap foreign products, and its industry challenged by foreign technological advances.

This paper is largely autobiographical: I chart my own intellectual journey across the history, culture and identity of so-called `small` islands, with a special reference to the Caribbean. To do so, I reflect on my own forays into literature that discussed Caribbean history and culture; my own research experience in Barbados in connection with my doctoral research; and coming up to the present with insights that have emerged in the pursuit of an island studies imagination in my professional work. The paper concludes with a calling, and a justification, for the pursuit of island studies.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the participation of Indigenous Australians in Slow Food International’s 2018 Salone del Gusto-Terra Madre meeting in Turin, Italy. Slow Food is a global grassroots organisation created to promote local food cultures and traditions, and the organisation’s Terra Madre network highlights the urgent need to pro- tect the food-production systems of Indigenous peoples, valuing their holistic approach and recognising them as custodians of biodiversity. By creating a platform for Indigenous peoples to meet and discuss their challenges and ideas, and by putting Indigenous knowl- edges and stewardship of the environment at the centre of discussions about tackling glob- al environmental challenges, the organisation encourages its Indigenous members to work toward food sovereignty in their respective countries as well as on an international level.

Opis:
This article takes a closer look at the processes of re-appropriation of the aesthetic field within which the phenomenon known as ‘contemporary African dance’ was shaped in the second half of the 20th century, mainly for the use of Western audiences. In the context of the generally outlined political and economic conditions of production, and using examples of performances that illuminate the basic concepts of postcolonial theories (e.g. H.K. Bhabha, E.W. Said and R. Bharucha), the main historical and aesthetic lines of the formation of the term ‘contemporary African dance’ and its possible designations are presented, and the artistic attitudes and formal procedures that artists of different generations employ in the process of reclaiming and transforming the aesthetic field that this term defines are evoked.

Opis:
This article focuses on European integration from a historical perspective, using the concepts of “national interest” and “interdependence” to analyse and interpret the transformations triggered by the intersecting forces of decolonisation and Cold War dynamics. The argument is structured in three parts: (a) The construction of the European Communities was initiated in the 1950s with the specific aim of gradually leading both the ruling elites and the societies of some European States to transcend the traditional notion of a “national interest”. The essay develops this idea by examining whether the concept of a “European interest” emerged or not, and whether it was helped or undermined by the enlargement waves of the 1960s and 1970s. (b) During the initial decades of European unification, the governing elites and societies in the participating states experienced a new dimension of international and transnational interdependence. However, traditional identity and relational patterns continued to influence their diplomatic behaviour. This article explores how interdependence coexisted with long-standing trends in the diplomatic action of European States during some phases of the Cold War, with particular reference to the 1960s. (c) In the security dimension of European integration, this essay sets the concepts of national interest and interdependence against a transatlantic background to understand how the US sought to harmonise these two notions in its broader global strategy, while decolonisation was simultaneously marking the decline of European traditional empires and setting the framework for the possible establishment of a new European “post-empire”. In conclusion, the end of the Cold War is identified as the crucial moment when, while the new European Union was outlined, the weakness of post-imperial discourse in European societies failed to restructure the transatlantic bond as well as the relationship between Europe and the world at a more mature and responsible level.

Opis:
This study aimed to explore the South African school managers (principals) perceptions of how they cope with the contested view of curriculum decolonization. Situated in the pragmatic and phenomenological paradigm, the study adopted a mixed approach and utilizes a descriptive phenomenological design to examine the school managers lived experiences of the curriculum decolonization agenda in their schools. A total of 20 participants was sampled for the data generation process, which followed the completion of unstructured questionnaires. The qualitative data were analysed thematically, while quantitative data was analysed using inferential statistics. The key conclusion arrived at was that true freedom has not yet been obtained in South Africa given that genuine curriculum transformation towards decolonization has not happened at the required rate and the country is still reeling in a state in which the non-achievement of goals set out at the dawn of the democracy really need a critical re-examination. Even though the South African government has made several commitments towards free education, the issue of curriculum decolonization or a decolonised education system has remained a gray area (Sathorar & Geduld, 2018). The demand for curriculum decolonization has been directed specifically at the tertiary education level where students have been raising some red flags owing to the lack of curriculum transformation in higher and tertiary education particularly at university levels (Mutekwe, 2017). Part of the claims for a decolonised school curriculum include that some out-dated colonised content continues to be window-dressed as the decolonised curriculum (Sathorar & Geduld, 2018). Proponents of a decolonised curriculum, for example, Mbembe (2016), Le Grange (2018) and Mutekwe (2017) agree that school curricular pedagogies tend to resemble Western strategies most of which are foreign to the student population and this often hampers not only their progress but also makes them endure the effects of racism in their schools and lecture halls. As a result, they have called for real

Ukrainian Gambit : decolonial perspectives on the First Shakespeare Theatre Festival in Ukraine
Autorzy:
Bal, Ewa
Opis:
The present article analyses the First Ukrainian International Shakespeare Theatre Festival, held in Ivano-Frankivsk from 17 to 22 June 2024. It seeks to elucidate the manner in which Ukrainian theatre artists and scholars utilise Shakespearean cultural scenarios as a platform for communication and dialogue with Western culture, within the context of an ongoing armed conflict. Furthermore, this study intends to illustrate how Ukrainian artists draw upon the avant-garde tradition of staging Shakespeare in Ukraine, in the process of decolonisation from the imposed Russian language and aesthetic models. The argument presented here is structured in three thematic sections, addressing the following points: (1) how the translations of Shakespeare into Ukrainian after 1990 have enabled the formation of a national culture, (2) how the ongoing war triggers patriarchal and feminist readings of Shakespeare and challenges its staging practice in the Ukrainian theatre and (3) to what extent the Shakespeare Festival diagnoses current theatre aesthetics in Ukraine and stimulates new languages of theatrical expression.
(3) w jakim stopniu Festiwal Szekspirowski diagnozuje obecną estetykę teatralną w Ukrainie i stymuluje nowe języki ekspresji teatralnej.

Opis:
Frantz Fanon in The Wretched of the Earth (1961) asserted the importance of colonial education for the emergence of “native intellectuals” who will be able to represent the masses and participate in the national agenda against colonisation. Likewise Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities (1983) draws attention to a secondary school in West Africa during French colonialism that offered colonial education to the local boys who eventually became nationalist leaders. Both Fanon and Anderson opined that colonial education was vital for the emergence of an elite indigenous group who possessed the key to mobilise the masses, contributing to the rise in nationalism. With the emergence of the Subaltern Studies in South Asia, the significance of the elite group and the ways non-elite members of a nation have been represented in nationalist discourses have been highly debated. This paper examines the relationship between British colonial education and the rise of nationalism in This End of the Rainbow (2006), a Malaysian life-writing in English by Adibah Amin, a female writer of Malay ethnic origin. Also, this paper looks at how as a nationalist writing, the narrative has deployed colonial education to distinguish the elites as decolonising agents from the masses, placing the latter at the margin as the subalterns.
