Opis:
This paper is a study of the meaning and use of the demonstrative jener in the contemporary German. The aim of this paper is to perform a corpus analysis of selected excerpts from texts including noun phrases with the demonstrative jener. All the examples are extracted from online versions of the weekly newspaper „Die Zeit“ published in 2018. The analysis carried out in this article intends to investigate how often and in what sense the demonstrative jener is currently in use.

The aim of the present paper is to review, describe and analyze determinant constructs, activated by the Italian variable demonstrative pronoun quello. The main corpus of the study consists on the discrimination and description of the morpho-syntactic peculiarities of the constructions in question, which can be identified with three structural types of determination (adjectival, prepositional and relative), in the interior of which atypical and more complex cases may be observed and give scope for uncertainty as to the typological classification. Further to this, the article offers a summary explanation and illustration of the difference between determinant and appositive sequences, as well as a concise description of the specific features of the determinant demonstrative and its sequences, relating to its referential, semantic, pragmatic and textual potential.

Descriptive indexicals, deferred reference, and anaphora

The objectives of this paper are twofold. The first is to present a differentiation between two kinds of deferred uses of indexicals : those in which indexical utterances express singular propositions (I term them deferred reference proper) and those where they express general propositions (called descriptive uses of indexicals). The second objective is the analysis of the descriptive uses of indexicals. In contrast to Nunberg, who treats descriptive uses as a special case of deferred reference in which a property contributes to the proposition expressed, I argue that examples in which a general proposition is indeed expressed by an indexical cannot be treated by assuming that the property is a deferred referent of the pronoun. I propose an analysis of descriptive uses of indexicals by means of a pragmatic mechanism of "descriptive anaphora", which attempts to explain the special kind of contribution of the property retrieved from the context to the proposition that is characteristic of the descriptive interpretation.

The aim of the present paper is to examine the cataphoric uses mediated by the Italian demonstrative neuter pronoun questo in order to define the typology of these uses, observe and measure its cataphoric properties and potential and also to determine in intralinguistic perspective the most productive demonstrative form in cataphora, by comparing the analyzed proximal with its corresponding distal in Italian. In terms of general methodological and theoretical network, we discuss the multifunctionality of demonstratives as context-sensible unities of language and we present a summarised description of the cataphora conceived as an independent and complementary cohesive relation to anaphora, conforming to the theories of Marek Kęsik. As for typological analyses, we have recourse to the theories proposed by Kęsik and Michel Maillard for the purpose of distinguishing and describing cataphoric relations according to the following criteria: 1) complusory or optional nature of cataphoric reference, on the basis of which cataphoras in the strict and in the wide sense (or pseudocataphoras), respectively, can be discriminated; 2) form of cataphoric expression, in accordance to which morphematic cataphoras, realized by explicit pronominal form, and zero cataphoras, mediated by implicit pronominal form, can be discerned; 3) field of relation, i.e. the form of cotext, in conformity to which segmental and resumptive cataphoras can be distinguished; 4) scope, in other words the textual space covered by the cataphoric relation, which can be included within or surpass the sentence limit in intraphrastic and transphrastic cataphoras respectively; 5) manner of referent identification, direct or indirect, according to which we can differentiate between metalinguistic and cognitive cataphoras respectively.  Our analyses, carried out on 135 occurrences of the Italian neuter proximal form, are based on the linguistic material extracted from NUNC (NewsGroup UseNet Corpora) corpora, mapped out by the University of Turin researchers and reflecting, first and foremost, evolutionary tendencies observable in written/spoken Italian used in discussion groups of the global network. The observations proposed here are enriched with quantitative and qualitative statistics of textual uses, including not only cataphoric, but also anaphoric, ana-deictic and ana-cataphoric uses, referring to the analyzed demonstrative form, prepared in order to draw conclusions about its peculiar functions and with the aim to discover in which differential form (proximal questo vs. distal quello) the preponderance of cataphoric uses can be remarked.

L’ana-catafora è la più « giovane » tra le relazioni diaforiche, dopo l’anafora e la catafora, che combina le caratteristiche formali e funzionali delle sue maggiori sorelle endoforiche. Con il presente contributo si propone di identificare e descrivere la relazione diaforica in questione, ricorrendo a vari parametri tassonomici (tra i quali la direzione del vettore, la forma dell’espressione diaforica, la forma del cotesto o il campo, la portata, il modo di donazione del referente e la coreferenzialità o meno tra diaforizzante e diaforizzato); ciò allo scopo di misurare il potenziale dei pronomi dimostrativi italiani questo e quello, variabili e invariabili, e di determinare il dimostrativo più produttivo nella mediazione delle relazioni ana-cataforiche. Le osservazioni di natura tipologica e le conseguenti conclusioni sono basate sul lavoro analitico condotto sul materiale linguistico estratto dal subcorpus Generale 1 dei corpora NUNC, testimoni di tendenze evolutive osservabili nell’italiano scritto / parlato, adoperato da utenti di diversi gruppi di discussione presenti in Rete.
The ana-cataphora is the “youngest” among diaphoric relations, after anaphora and cataphora, and combines characteristics of its “older” endophoric relatives.The present paper identifies and describes this diaphoric relation by using various taxonomic parameters (vector, diaphoric expression, cotext or field, scope, referent identification manner, coreferentiality) in order to measure the potential of the demonstratives in question and to determine the most productive demonstrative form as an ana-cataphoric catalyst. Observations, remarks and conclusions are based on the analysis of research data extracted from the subcorpus Generale 1 of NUNC corpora, reflecting evolutionary tendencies observable in spoken/written Italian, used in discussion groups of the global network.
Artykuł dotyczy „najmłodszej” spośród relacji diaforycznych, po anaforze i kataforze, łączącej w sobie cechy dwóch pozostałych — ana-katafory. Celem pracy jest identyfikacja i opis tego typu relacji za pomocą różnorodnych kategorii taksonomicznych, zmierzenie potencjału analizowanych zaimków i wyłonienie formy najbardziej produktywnej w realizacji relacji ana-kataforycznych oraz ich ilościowe porównanie z częstotliwością występowania pozostałych relacji diaforycznych. Obserwacje i wnioski są oparte o pracę analityczną przeprowadzoną na korpusie NUNC Generale 1, będącym zapisem komunikacji użytkowników grup dyskusyjnych w sieci.

Descriptives singular terms

In "Descriptive indexicals and indexical descriptions" Nunberg claimed that only indexicals among singular terms may have descriptive uses, i.e. have nonsingular contributions to the propositions they are used to express. In this respect they differ from proper names or definite descriptions. In "Lessons from Descriptive Indexicals", Sæbø shows that this conjecture is untenable, providing examples of the descriptive uses of both proper names and definite descriptions. This paper offers an account of the descriptive uses of all of the singular terms and provides an alternative to Saebø’s account. Sæbø’s analysis rests on the assumption that the propositional contribution of all singular terms used descriptively is a singular concept. I will argue against this assumption and my proposal will offer a uniform analysis of the descriptive uses of singular terms that is not constrained by it.

Przedstawiony w artykule opis semantycznych uwarunkowań swobodnego szyku składników fraz nominalnych w języku chińskim jest dla autorów podstawą twierdzenia, że język ten nie posiada składniowej kategorii DP. Rozszerzając analizę na wykładnik liczby mnogiej -men, autorzy łączą określoność fraz zawierających ten wykładnik oraz interakcje między semantyką liczby mnogiej i referencji określonej -men z jego statusem klasyfikatora, a także z brakiem projekcji składniowej DP w języku chińskim. Również własności przydawek dzierżawczych w chińskich frazach nominalnych sugerują brak kategorii DP w gramatyce języka chińskiego. Artykuł zawiera również semantyczny opis niektórych różnic w porządku linearnym składników fraz nominalnych pomiędzy językiem chińskim i językiem serbsko-chorwackim, również pozbawionym składniowej kategorii DP.
We provide a semantic account of the free ordering of NP-internal elements in Chinese and argue that this provides evidence for the lack of DP in Chinese. We also extend this account to the Mandarin plural marker -men, tying the definiteness of -men phrases and its number/definiteness interaction to the classifier status of -men and the lack of DP in Chinese. We show that the binding properties of Chinese possessors also provide evidence for the no-DP analysis of Chinese. Finally, we propose a semantic account of certain differences in the order of NP-internal elements between Chinese and Serbo-Croatian, another language that lacks DP.

Nous nous proposons ici de poursuivre l’analyse des démonstratifs cataphoriques (DC) en nous penchant cette fois-ci sur leur fonctionnement référentiel proprement dit : comment s’effectue exactement la saisie cataphorique de leur référent ? Ou, dit autrement, comment nous font-ils atteindre le référent visé ? Quelle est précisément la procédure interprétative mise en jeu ? Notre enquête comportera quatre parties. La première, très rapide, rappellera pourquoi les DC sont habituellement, aussi bien dans les typologies anciennes que récentes, rangés avec les démonstratifs anaphoriques dans la catégorie des démonstratifs endophoriques. Nous montrerons dans la deuxième partie qu’une telle classification, pour justifiée qu’elle puisse être si l’on prend uniquement en compte le critère du passage par le texte (soit antérieur ou subséquent), présente néanmoins un inconvénient majeur, celui de masquer l’asymétrie cognitive qu’il y a entre les DC et les démonstratifs anaphoriques. Cette asymétrie cognitive conduit à abandonner la piste classique de l’opposition intra-endophorique entre DC et démonstratifs anaphoriques et pousse à emprunter une autre voie comparative, qui conduit aux démonstratifs ostensifs. La comparaison que nous opèrerons, dans les troisième et quatrième parties, entre les démonstratifs ostensifs et les DC, en même temps qu’elle établira la vicinité cognitive des deux types de démonstratifs, permettra de mettre au jour, de façon plus précise et plus juste qu’auparavant, quel est le réel fonctionnement des DC.
The studies of anaphoric expressions have shown that we can and must link the stable results acquired over the last forty years on their functioning to more recent socio-cognitive, taxonomic, multimodal, etc. perspectives and examine and explain two aspects of cataphoric demonstratives (CDs): on the one hand, their constructional scheme and, on the other, the formal and semantic nature of their subsequent or postcedent. We propose here to continue this analysis of CDs, this time looking at their referential operation as such and asking the question: how do CDs make us reach the intended referent? What precisely is the interpretative procedure involved? Our analyses show that rather than directly contrasting CDs with anaphoric demonstratives, it is more relevant and, therefore, more fruitful to compare them directly with gestural demonstratives. As we have seen, the two uses of demonstratives correspond to the same cognitive situation, that of introducing a new referent into discourse memory. This cognitive kinship gives rise to a common semiotic hybridity and, consequently, a referential operation, which we have detailed in nine points, that turns out to be largely identical, the differences observed being directly due to the difference in the nature of the index.

Having taken the utility of the subject for granted, she wonders about the appropriate program and bibliographic references. Using the example of one word class, the author shows that even where two languages have the same categories, there can be variation in terms of how they are used by speakers. This question is not emphasized enough in the available contrastive grammars.
Neste artigo, com base numa classe de palavras escolhida, a autora compartilha sua experiência como professora-pesquisadora encarregada das aulas de gramática contrastiva franco-polonesa, em um departamento de língua estrangeira de uma universidade polonesa. Tendo em conta a utilidade do assunto para a matéria, ela questiona oconteúdo e as referências bibliográficas a serem propostas. A autora mostra que, embora as duas línguas tenham formas comparáveis, a utilização que é feita delas não é necessariamente idêntica, assunto que as obras comparativas disponíveis não apresentam

Dans cet article, à partir d’une classe de mots choisie, l’auteur partage son expérience d’enseignante-chercheuse chargée de cours de grammaire contrastive polono-française dans un département de langues étrangères d’une université polonaise. Tenant l’utilité de la matière pour acquise, elle s’interroge sur le contenu et les références bibliographiques à proposer. Elle montre que même si les deux langues disposent de formes comparables, l’usage qui en est fait n’est pas forcément identique ce que les ouvrages comparatifs disponibles ne mettent pas en avant.
