Opis:: The aim of this paper is to present the methods of expressing deontic modality in Korean, Indonesian, English and Polish legislative texts. The research methods applied included the analysis of comparable texts and corpus linguistics methodology (Antconc software). The research corpora have been composed of selected Korean, Indonesian, English and Polish legislative texts described in more detail below. The purpose of this work is to compile the exponents expressing obligation, prohibition and permission in legislative texts in the languages listed above in order to find sufficient equivalents that may be used for the purpose of translation within any pair formed out of the four languages under scrutiny.

Opis:: Deontic modality in culinary recipesSummaryThe subject of the study is deontic modality, its characterisation against various definitions and classifications of modality, as well as the analysis of different methods of expressing modality in recipes. The thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter One presents the development and characterisation of a single recipe as well as of a whole cookery book and shows that a recipe belongs to the genre of non-literary texts. Chapters Two and Three demonstrate the lack of homogeneousness in the definition and the typology of modality, which is characteristic of Polish linguistics. They also present a description of my own understanding of the term modality, which is used throughout the study, as well as the detailed characterisation of the main types of modality: alethic, epistemic and temporal. Chapter Four discusses the methodology, justifies the choice of the subject, presents the research methods and the research material, which is comprised of cookery books written in Polish and issued after year 2000 and recipes available on the Internet. Chapter Five shows the current state of research into deontic modality, while Chapter Six presents the material analysis and elaborates on the methods of expressing modality in recipes, according to the accepted indicators of this modality, which are: morphological indicators: a) second-person present imperative verb form, b) infinitive in independent clauses; lexical indicators: c) deontic modal verbs and modal predicates; and d) second-person plural present verb form. The last chapter presents the collation of the results of my analysis and the current state of research in this field. The thesis does not exhaust the subject, but it constitutes an introduction to further research on deontic modality and the methods of expressing it, not only in recipes, but also in non-literary texts in general. The study can be treated as a starting point or a comparative data for diachronic analysis of recipes or collation of modality indicators in the texts of various genres, for instance.
Modalność deontyczna w przepisach kulinarnychStreszczenie Tematem opracowania jest modalność deontyczna, jej charakterystyka na tle różnych definicji i klasyfikacji modalności oraz analiza sposobów jej wyrażania w przepisach kulinarnych.Rozprawa składa się z siedmiu rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich został poświęcony przedstawieniu ogólnego rozwoju i charakterystyki zarówno samego przepisu kulinarnego, jak i książki kucharskiej w całości oraz wykazaniu przynależności przepisu kulinarnego do tekstów użytkowych. Rozdziały drugi i trzeci ukazują niejednorodność definicyjną i typologiczną modalności, która panuje w językoznawstwie polskim, a także zawierają opis mojego rozumienia modalności, jakim posługuję się w pracy oraz szczegółową charakterystykę głównych typów modalności: aletycznej, epistemicznej oraz czasowej. Rozdział czwarty przynosi metodologie pracy, uzasadniam w nim wybór tematu, prezentuję materiał badawczy, który stanowią książki kucharskie napisane w języku polskim i wydane po 2000 roku, a także przepisy dostępne na stronach WWW oraz metodę badań. Stan badań nad modalnością deontyczną został przedstawiony w rozdziale piątym. Natomiast rozdział szósty stanowi analizę materiałową, omawiam w nim sposoby wyrażania modalności w przepisach kulinarnych, zgodnie z przyjętymi wykładnikami tej modalności, które stanowią: wykładniki morfologiczne: czasowniki w formie: a) 2 os. trybu rozkazującego czasu teraźniejszego, b) bezokolicznika w zdaniach niezależnych; wykładniki leksykalne: c) czasowniki modalne deontycznie i predykaty modalne; oraz d) forma czasownika w 2 os. liczby mnogiej czasu teraźniejszego. W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiam zestawienie wyników mojej analizy ze stanem dotychczasowych badań naukowych. Rozprawa ta nie wyczerpuje całości tematu, a jedynie stanowi wstęp do dalszych badań nad modalnością deontyczną, sposobami jej wyrażania, nie tylko w przepisach kulinarnych, ale w tekstach użytkowych w ogóle. Może być traktowana jako punkt wyjścia lub element porównawczy, np. przy analizie diachronicznej przepisów kulinarnych lub przy zestawianiu wykładników modalności w tekstach różnych gatunkowo.

Opis:: Participants in a conversational exchange may express their viewpoints in a number of ways, or put more precisely, they use various ways of expressing their viewpoints. When employing phrases such as It is likely that ..., perhaps ..., actually ..., it is possible that..., and I think that ..., etc., speakers modify the meaning, or the illocutionary force, of the utterances they make. This feature, which has been called ‘modality’, is present, among others, in the genre of political interview and serves various functions. The present contribution offers an inquiry into the linguistic means that politicians utilize to modify their involvement in, or their detachment from, the proposition and in this way they alter the meaning of their statements.

Opis:: This paper deals with the methods of expressing deontic modality in statutory instruments. The author analyzes three pure meanings that is to say; (i) obligation, (ii) prohibition and (iii) permission. Within those three meanings three sub-meanings are distinguished. Within the meaning of obligation, the author distinguishes the following sub-meanings: (i) unlimited duty, (ii) conditional duty, and (iii) external duty. Within the meaning of prohibition the following three sub-meanings may be distinguished: (i) unlimited prohibition, (ii) conditional prohibition, and (iii) external prohibition. Within the meaning of permission we have distinguished three sub-meanings: (i) unlimited permission, (ii) conditional permission, and (iii) external permission. The exponents of deontic modality are presented in the tables and compared in order to show potential translation equivalents.
Praca dotyczy metod wyrażania modalności deontycznej w aktach normatywnych. Autorka dokonuje analizy następujących znaczeń modalnych: (i) obligacji, (ii) zakazu oraz (iii) przyzwolenia. W ramach tych trzech znaczeń głównych wyróżnia podznaczenia. Wyróżniono następujące podznaczenia obligacji: (i) obowiązek bezwzględny, (ii) obowiązek względny, (iii) obowiązek narzucony pozaustawowo; zakazu: (i) zakaz bezwzględny, (ii) zakaz względny, (iii) zakaz narzucony pozaustawowo; oraz przyzwolenia: (i) przyzwolenie bezwzględne, (ii) przyzwolenie względne, (iii) przyzwolenie narzucone pozaustawowo. Wykładniki modalności deontycznej dla poszczególnych znaczeń i podznaczeń zostały zestawione w tabelach w celu pokazania potencjalnych ekwiwalentów translatorycznych.

Opis:: The article deals with the modal scheme of the interrogative sentence in Italian. For this purpose, the inflectional verbal mood in Italian is observed with the aim to describe the way in which it operates along with non-grammatical means in the act of indication of different illocutionary act and various modal meaning of the deontic and epistemic modality that may be associated with this sentence type. For this purpose the verbal mood is viewed within the modal scheme of a particular sentence type and as the modal centre of a type of utterance that may function as several illocutionary acts. Both direct and indirect speech acts are taken into consideration.

Opis:: Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie i porównanie językowych wykładników jednego ze znaczeń modalności deontycznej, tj. obligatywności (nakazu) w polskim i hiszpańskim kodeksie cywilnym. Na podstawie analizy z tekstów korpusu zostały wyróżnione signifikatory (wykładniki językowe przenoszące znaczenie obligatywności), którymi mogą być wyrazy (podzielone według kategorii partyoratywnej, do której należą) oraz syntagmy. Signifikatorem obligatywności może być również kontekst tekstu normatywnego (tu ustawy). W proponowanym opisie wszystkie signifikatory zostały pogrupowane według kategorii semantycznej wyrazu będącego podmiotem w zdaniu, w którym wystąpił dany signifikator. Zaznaczono również, czy dany signifikator występuje w korpusie w czasie teraźniejszym czy przyszłym.
In this paper the significators (i. e. linguistic indicators) of one of the deontic meanings, viz. obligation, in the Polish and Spanish civil codes are presented and compared. The significators of obligation which can be words (classified according to the part of speech they belong to) or syntagms, were identified as a result of an analisis of the corpus. Also, the contex of a normative text (here: statutory instruments) can be the only significator of obligation in a sentence which appeared in such a text. In order to provide a more precise description, the significators are classified according to the semantic category of the word which is the subject of the sentence where the significator appeared. It is also indicated whether a significator is used in the present or future tense.

Opis:: The main purpose of this study is to analyse the expression of obligation in Spanish and Polish, in particular some forms of personal obligation (verbal periphrasis) and to compare them with corresponding Polish equivalents. We examine these units in terms of translation study: we search for Spanish periphrasis and for their Polish equivalents in translation, and describe them with the objective to present some comparative observations. Since in Polish language there are no verbal periphrasis, we observe different methods of translation of Spanish units and we analyse if they express the same modality.

Opis:: Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest konstrukcja z czasownikiem modalnym shall + bezokolicznik w angielskiej wersji Powszechnej Deklaracji Praw Człowieka i jej odpowiedniki w wersjach niemieckiej, niderlandzkiej i polskiej. Jako tertium comparationis przyjęto kategorię semantyczną modalności deontycznej w tekście prawnym. Studium porównawcze przedstawia stopień, w jakim badany typ tekstu kodowany jest użyciem sygnałów modalnych. Określa czynniki niezależne od typu tekstu, które wymagają zastosowania form modalnych w zależności od wewnętrznego charakteru systemu gramatycznego. Przewodnią metodą badawczą jest zatem analiza strukturalna i funkcjonalna na podstawie hipotezy konwergencji kategorialnej przy kodowaniu odpowiednich funkcji gramatycznych przez jednostki należące do odmiennych warstw systemów językowych. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że wybór odpowiedniego ekwiwalentu dla wyrażenia modalności deontycznej nie jest determinowany podobieństwem formalnym jednostek języka źródłowego i docelowych.
In her article, Patrycja Montusiewicz examines constructions with the modal verb shall + infinitive in the English version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its German, Dutch and Polish versions. She has adopted the semantic category of deontic modality in a legal text the tertium comparationis. This comparative study shows the degree to which the analyzed text type is coded with the help of modal signals. Montusiewicz identifies factors independent of the type of text and requiring the use of modal forms depending on the internal nature of the grammatical system. Her main research method is, therefore, a structural and functional analysis based on the hypothesis of categorial convergence when coding the appropriate grammatical functions by units belonging to different layers of the language systems. Her research has shown that the selection of an appropriate equivalent for the expression of deontic modality is not determined by the formal similarity of the source and target language units.
