Opis:
The need and interest in conducting biomedical research outside the traditional laboratory is increasing. In the field testing such as in the participant's home or work environment is a growing consideration when undertaking biomedical investigation. This type of research requires at a minimum semi-autonomous computer systems that collect such data and send it back to the laboratory for processing and dissemination with the smallest amount of attendance by the participant or even the experimenter. A key aspect of supporting this type of research is the selection of the appropriate software and hardware components. These supporting systems need to be reliable, allow considerable customizability and be readily accessible but also able to be locked down. In this paper we report a set of requirements for the hardware and software for such a system. We then utilise these requirements to evaluate the use of game consoles as a hardware platform in comparison to other hardware choices. We finish by outline one particular aspect of the supporting software used to support the chosen hardware platform based on the OSGi framework.

Revisiting feeling of threat and agency detection : a preregistered virtual reality study

Opis:
While agency detection has been used to explain religious phenomena, there are two competing theories regarding the neurocognitive mechanism underlying it: hyperactive agency detection device (HADD) and the predictive processing-based model. Those two theories differ in their predictions regarding the impact of feeling of threat on agency detection. The present study aimed to put this hypothesized effect to a new test in virtual reality. One hundred ninety-nine participants explored an agentless, foggy virtual forest, instructed to press a button whenever they perceive a being. While all participants were primed to expect a stable number of agents, we manipulated the description of beings, introducing them as either hostile or neutral, depending on the group. We also measured participants’ heart rate and their reported anxiety during the task. To test our hypotheses, we performed a Wilcoxon’s test for our main analysis. Two linear regressions models have been run to examine the moderating effect of arousal and whether anxiety mediates the relationship between priming and agency detection. We also performed a test of statistical equivalence and exploratory analyses. The study did not confirm that people are more likely to falsely detect agents when they expect them to be dangerous, which casts doubt on HADD conceptualized as a threat-triggered mechanism. However, we found several patterns in both quantitative and qualitative data which call for further studies on the topic of agency detection as a building block of religious and spiritual phenomena.

The cognitive science of religion is a developing subdiscipline of the cognitive sciences which aim at providing the natural explanation of religion by indicating mental tools responsible for the acceptance of religious beliefs. The main goal of this study is to assess the impact of the rapid development of sciences on human religiosity with the use of the conceptual means offered by the cognitive science of religion. Also, a discussion of the role of the models of supernaturality is carried out with the indication that their introduction may be of great assistance in substantiating the outcomes of the cognitive treatment of religiosity. Possible responses to the impact of sciences on religiosity are surveyed.

Opis:
Two common channels through which humans communicate are speech and gaze. Eye gaze is an important mode of communication: it allows people tobetter understand each others’ intentions, desires, interests, and so on. The goal of this research is to develop a framework for gaze triggered events that can be executed on a robot and mobile devices and allows to perform experiments. We experimentally evaluate the framework and techniques for extracting gaze direction based on a robot-mounted camera or a mobile-device camera that are implemented in the framework. We investigate the impact of light on the accuracy of gaze estimation, and also how the overall accuracy depends on user eye and head movements. Our research shows that light intensity is important, and the placement of a light source is crucial. All the robot-mounted gaze detection modules we tested were found to be similar with regard to their accuracy. The framework we developed was tested in a human-robot interaction experiment involving a job-interview scenario. The flexible structure of this scenario allowed us to test different components of the framework in varied real-world scenarios, which was very useful for progressing towards our long-term research goal of designing intuitive gaze-based interfaces for human robot communication.

Opis:
The overview article deals with the current issue of contamination detection. Unfortunately, the threat of the possibility of using weapons of mass destruction in a local conflict caused by Russia cannot be excluded. In addition, analysing contemporary threats, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of activity of terrorists using improvised explosive devices with acetone and urotropin peroxides. The country’s contamination reconnaissance (detection) system is technically and procedurally outdated compared to NATO solutions. Point detectors and patrols operating in the area of contamination dominate, while in NATO armies remote systems, e.g., using lidar techniques, unmanned means, etc., are used. Poland has all the elements to establish this type of contamination reconnaissance system.

Point-of-care testing (POCT) devices are currently available for the detection of various important diseases owing to their easy-to-use, portable, and user-friendly nature. However, the multistep regent manipulation still impedes the performance of the device for end-users. To address this issue, we present a novel sequential flow-through microfluidic device that incorporates dual flow behaviors (fast-flow/delayed) into a single device for assessing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVDs) using C-reactive protein (CRP) as the model analyte. The device features a fast-flow channel for automated washing of unbound CRP antigens and a delayed channel for flow of a redox reagent for electrochemical analysis. It requires only a single buffer loading, resulting in a total analysis time of 15 min. To overcome challenges related to storage stability and the affinity of antibodies in the manufacturing process, we integrated the P3-CRP peptide as a new bioreceptor for CRP detection. The performance of both the P3-CRP peptide and antibodies was assessed and examined using chronocoulometry. The proposed device exhibited a limit of detection at 47 pg mL−1 with a wide linear range (5 orders of magnitude). To validate its applicability, the device was tested with serum, plasma, and whole blood samples, yielding satisfactory results.
