Opis:: Synonyms according to Klementyna Hoffman (née Tańska) The paper deals with the way of describing by Klementyna Hoffman (née Tańska), living 1798-1845, who is known in the history of literature as an author of children’s and women’s texts and a defender of national identity, the lexemes being regarded as synonyms by her. The presented analyses show that Tańska regarded as synonyms not only lexemes in the modern linguistic sense, and described not only lexemes but also concepts. The construction of particular descriptions was characteristic of Hoffman and had a lot of features in common with the 19th-century attempts of the Polish synonymists. This is demonstrated by a comparison of the way of describing synonyms by Klementyna Hoffman and Bp. Adam S. Krasiński. This that distinguished the activity of Tańska in this respect was the use of moralistic admonishments.

Opis:: The study examined the evolution of the Kapampangan language over time through the use of historical texts, dictionaries, and linguistic tools, such as interview guides and word lists. Data were taken from 62 informants in 31 towns in the Kapampangan-speaking region; the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan and Bataan were included in the study. Elders who were 60 years old and above, and young adults aged 17-30 years old were the main sources of information for the study. One criterion was that the participants must be native Kapampangans, meaning they were born, grew up, and currently live in the province where Kapampangan is spoken. It compared the collected data from the past to the present day. The study also examined the impact of industrial and technological advancements on language evolution. The study revealed that the Kapampangan language has been influenced by Tagalog due to its geographical proximity, and most of the younger generation has adopted this change, assimilating elements of Tagalog. In addition, social media and technological innovations have contributed to this trend.

Opis:: The use of terms in discourse is characterized by the presence of definitions aimed at explaining and clarifying their meaning in a given field, both for specialists and for non-specialists. This defining activity associates with terminological units, thus considered in their textual dimension, over time since their appearance in the language as neologisms. Although the question of definitions can be explored from different angles for the general language and for specialized language, in this paper we are interested in the automatic identification and analysis of definitions in a diachronic corpus. We intend to reflect on the data offered by these definitions with the objective of offering a terminographic description focused on the diachronic aspect of terms. After automatic identification, we will observe the definitions in two phases of terms: the moment of their appearance in the French language and the moment of their dissemination and lexicalization. Our attention is focused on the definitions characterizing the French terms in the commercial field in a diachronic perspective, within the DIACOM corpus.

Opis:: This paper introduces the methodology of compiling and maintaining MoncoPL, a large monitor corpus of web-based Polish. Furthermore, an overview of the search engine of the same name is provided to show how the size and composition of the corpus, currently reaching over 5.6 billion word tokens, facilitates research on distributional properties of rare words, neologisms and phraseological units. Finally, the article exemplifies some advantages of using a densely-sampled diachronic corpus for the purposes of observing frequency trends and cycles of various constructions in online media discourse.

Opis:: Vocabulary especially changes under the influence of cultural alternations. For example, the changing structure and function of the family in the contemporary world, causes modification of the family lexical representation. The goal of this study was to show changes in the mental lexicon of Polish preschool children in the space of 24 years. The domain of the mental lexicon chosen to be examined, is the family. We compared our results with the results collected by Zgółkowa and Bułczyńska in 1987. The investigation was conducted in a sample of 100 preschool children (age 3–7). We designed the experiment based on self-designed tasks, provoking children to talk about their families. It was expected that present-day preschoolers would talk about their families in the same way as the children, who were living in the late 1980s. This hypothesis had been confirmed. Present-day children use the same words as their peers who were living in the 1980s, when they talk about relatives. However, both groups of children differ according to word frequency. Nowadays, comparing with 1987, some names of family relations are used more often, while some have a lower frequency.

Opis:: The focus of the paper is the historical comparison of E fist and P pięść from the perspective of diachronic phonology. The paper specifically addresses the issue of the phonological development of this pair of cognates. The main aim is to explain the relatedness and differentiations of the modern reflexes of the original Proto-Indo-European roots and to account for their different phonological developments in both languages with a view to understanding the connection between the contemporary cognates. These aims are realised by means of searching for sound changes that explain the discrepancy in the phonological shapes of modern cognates and collecting other pairs of cognates that demonstrate the effect of theses sound changes. As the result of the historical and comparative analysis, it is argued that some of the Proto-Germanic reconstructions are more likely than others and in conclusion the most probable development of the two cognates is outlined in the chronological order. It is remarkable that the cognates of the compounds pięść / fist are to be found almost exclusively in Slavic and Germanic and the effect of their development resembles blending.

Opis:: The paper concentrates on the historical comparison of English herd and Polish trzoda from the perspective of the hypothesis of common origin. As Polish and English are descendants of a common ancestor, the Proto-Indo-European language, it is expected that the two words, different from one another as they may seem today, go back to one and the same common proto-word. Consequently, the pair of cognates should exhibit the sound correspondences which result from sound changes.
