Opis:: Jan Joachim Tarło belonged to a family whose three members were bishops of Poznań in the first half of the 18th century. Jan Joachim was an alumnus of Jesuit schools and during his sojourn there joined the Society of Jesus which he left in 1689, passing into the ranks of diocesan clergy. In December 1718 he was granted papal provision to the bishopric in Kiev and remained in office until 1723 when he was transferred to the office of bishop of Poznań which he fulfilled for nine years until his death on 13 August 1732. He died in Vienna on his return from a journey to Rome.His book of pontifical activities for the years 1719-1731 survives till the present day and is stored at the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań (catalogue number ASO 7). The book is divided into sections in which the following types of activities are recorded: ordinations of various degrees including presbiterate and episcopate, blessing of cornerstones, consecration and blessing of churches, consecration of permanent altars and portative stones, blessing of church bells, consecrations of the holy oils.From the records in the book it follows that during his ministry as bishop of Kiev, Tarło stayed in the Cracow diocese and discharged his duties there. Interestingly, there is no evidence of his performing any official acts in the area of the Kiev diocese, which must have been connected with the fact that already by then a great part of its territory (the bishopric of Kiev included) lay within the borders of the Russian Empire, whereas the part that remained in the Kingdom of Poland encompassed just a few parish churches.

Opis:: In 1939 the Soviet army occupied Wołyń, devastating there the structures of Catholic Church. A lot of priests from the sites of the pre-war diocese of Lutsk arrived to the diocese of Warmia. Between 1945 and 1987 eight from those priests were staying in Elbląg. Two of them, Wacław Hipsz and Aleksander Iwanicki had a big influence on the social-religious life in post-war Elbląg.

Opis:: Kapituła Katedralna Elbląska została utworzona 25 listopada 1992 r. Instalacja kanoników miała miejsce dopiero 25 marca 1993 r. Artukuł prezentuje ćwierćwiecze tej kapituły na tle dziejów kapituł katedralnych i kolegiackich w regionie Polski północno-wschodniej (matropolia gdańska i warmińska). Wiele miejsca poświęcono liczebności kapituł i wykształceniu kanoników.
The Cathedral Chapter in Elbląg was established on the 25th November 1992. The installation of canons did not take place until 25th March 1993. The article presents the quarter-century of this chapter against the history of cathedral and collegiate chapters in the North-Eastern Poland region (Gdańsk and the metropolis of Warmia). Much space was devoted tothe numerous chapters and to the education of canons.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to present the edition of the statutes of the chapters of Vilnius and Samogitia authored by Wioletta Pawlikowska-Butterwick and Liudas Jovaiša. The presentation is preceded by a description of the history of both dioceses and remarks on the role of statutes as the source of the particular law of both chapters. Some space was devoted to the authors of the statutes and related issues. The editorial basis and the critical apparatus were discussed. Finally, attention was drawn to the illustrations accompanying the edition.

Opis:: The following article focuses on the territorial analysis of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin from 1790 to the foundation of the diocese of Lublin by Pope Pius VII in the papal bull on 23 September 1805. The territorial structure of this diocese was formed from the two bigger and two smaller church administrative units, as in 1790 it encompassed some territory which belonged to the Metropolis of Lvov-the diocese of Chełm (three deaneries), as well as most of the Archdeanery of Lublin, which belonged to the diocese of Kraków, the Metropolis of Gniezno(apart from the deanery of Solec). From the latter diocese and metropolis, the deanery of Stężyca (from the deanery of Kielce) and the deanery of Urzędów (from the archdeanery of Zawichost) were also incorporated to the diocese of Chełm and Lublin. Presenting the particular parts of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin created in 1790, the author also describes the years before its foundation, because the analysis of the territorial structures both the diocese of Chełm- erected in 14 the century- and the archdeanery of Lublin-created in 12th century-covers even the beginnings of the 14th century. In addition, in this article an attempt has been made to explain the diocese name controversy –created in 1790- and the titles of its first ordinary bishops: Maciej Garnysz and Wojciech Skarszewski. The boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin underwent some changes over time due to the partitions of Poland. That is why the following article is accompanied by a few maps, which can help to illustrate each and every modification to the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin and to show its parts along with the marked capitals of the deaneries.

Opis:: This article presents actual missionary involvement of the diocese of Tarnów in the context of the 225th anniversary of its existence. For 38 years, Catholic missionaries from the diocese of Tarnow have been traveling the globe educating other cultures about the Christian faith as well as organising everything needed for the improvement of people’s spiritual and physical lives. So, missionary activities have two dimensions – spiritual and material. The bishop’s role, as the ruler and centre of unity in the diocesan apostolate, is to promote missionary activity, to direct it and to coordinate it, but always in such a way that the zeal and spontaneity of those who share in the work may be preserved and fostered. The missionary activities in the diocese of Tarnow have been strongly supported by the bishops: Jerzy Ablewicz, Józef Życiński and Wiktor Skworc, who have sent 118 priests to the three continents. The Tarnow missionary work is a great contribution to the evangelization of the countries in Africa, South America and, more recently, in Asia (mostly Kazakhstan). This commitment has been marked by the seal of martyrdom by one of the priest – Fr. Jan Czuba who was murdered in the Republic of Congo in 1998. Currently, the Diocesan Missionary Agency has sent 46 priests as missionaries: 14 to Africa, 27 to Latin America and 5 to Kazakhstan. Apostolic activity is organized not only by priests, but also by lay missionaries: one in Cameroon, two in the Central African Republic and additionally two volunteers.

Opis:: Canonical visitation of the parish as a form of implementation of the episcopal office is the momentous duty of every diocesan bishop. In the light of tradition reveals itself as one of the oldest institutions through which the shepherd of the diocese maintains direct contact with both clergy and laity. Because of the great pastoral significance of the visit as early as the fourth century synods ordered that the bishops during, taught and the Sacraments, a turning point in reviving this form of episcopal ministry had the Council of Trent whitch visits treated as an act preparatory to the diocesan synod. The Second Vatican Council referring to the biblical tradition and described the office of bishop as a “pastoral” and episcopal ministry as a “spiritual governance”. Noting that the territory of the diocese and its population should be such that the bishop, though he had to help others, he could personally act as bishop, created in this way, the fundamental conditions to give a canonical parish visitation clearly pastoral character. The last part of the article shows the extent to which the pastoral dimension of the mission of the diocesan bishop determines the practice of the canonical visitation of the Archdiocese of Warmia.
