Opis:
This paper discusses current interpretative differences between such terms as: coupled, complex, multidimensional, and multiple disabilities. The analyses of these terms and what they connote are also presented in the light of the concepts of human disability proposed by the World Health Organization from 1980 and 2001. Moreover, based on the presented analyses, the possible interpretations of the selected terms are discussed in relation to the required educational and rehabilitative needs of individuals with particular types of disabilities.

Opis:
The thesis considered in the article is the statement that mild intellectual disability is a demanding disability. Three dimensions were distinguished in the description of the situation of persons with a mild intellectual disability:1. Attributes of the phenomenon of mild intellectual disability2. Attributes of the population of people with mild intellectual disabilities3. Attributes of selected elements of the mesosystem of people with mild intellectual disabilities The key phenomena for these dimensions were analysed. The ambiguity of these phenomena has become the basis for considering the opportunities and threats that they may pose. Due to the extensiveness of the issues raised, the issues discussed are presented in two parts. The present text is considers the first two of the dimensions listed.

Opis:
Beginning from the position of disability understood as a social and cultural construct, this paper aims to analyze and compare representations of disability in fairy tales by such authors as the Grimm brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, Charles Perrault, Giovanni Francesco Straparola, and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Despite the prevalence of disabled characters in many fairy tales, there exists just a handful of articles on disability in fairy tales within the field of disability studies (Schmiesing 2014). Therefore, this study attempts to fill in a knowledge gap in the area of disability studies by looking at disability and characters with disabilities in fairy tales from the perspective of the social model of disability. In this paper I seek to explore variations in the way different authors describe disability/sickness/deformity and to discuss such subjects related to the area of disability studies as overcoming disability and the question of cure (understood, in the context of fairy tales, as a supernatural restoration to the able-bodied state). In addition, I attempt to see if there exist any differences in how sick/disabled/deformed fairy tales characters are portrayed depending on their gender.

Opis:
Humans as social beings feel natural attraction to being with other people, i.e. to establishing and maintaining relationships. Affiliations, such as friendship or love, significantly influence their development from the earliest years of life, either enriching or disturbing the quality of their functioning. Therefore, those who due to their health status or another life situation are marked by otherness, must be prepared to endure hardships. Consequently, persons with disabilities experience failures in their interpersonal contacts. They are often devoid of the opportunity to have a good friend or to experience true love, which may exacerbate their already difficult situation, often triggered within a family setting, where there was no acceptance and/or insufficient quality of parental love. All human beings, children in particular, need closeness and affection. Only then do they develop properly, experience happiness, see the meaning of their lives, feel loved and are able to reciprocate that love. Experiencing a disability or being a parent of a child with a disability may make love more difficult, perhaps even impossible. However, the desire for love can be so strong that it will manage to overcome all obstacles. Unfortunately, it may as well make life a grey existence filled with loneliness and suffering.

Difficulties resulting from the social perception of people with disabilities, and the personal assessment of their own disability are important for her/his relationship with other people. Therefore, it is worth asking what the perceptions are, of those who experience psychosocial effects due to their physical disability, towards people with intellectual disabilities, hearing impairments, visual impairments, mental illnesses, as well as their own physically disabled group. To analyse the perception of people with a physical disability, the study explores three areas: the acceptance or rejection of society’s stigmatization towards persons with disabilities; integrative versus separative social orientations of people with physical disability; social preferences of people with physical disability regarding other disabled people. The research sample consisted of 75 people with physical disabilities, who suffer from damage to the locomotor system. The data was collected using a questionnaire The findings highlight that the response from those who were physically disabled agreed with the opinions of general society, not only with the issue of promoting integrated solutions and offering assistance, but also having the same preferences and opinions about specific types of disability. However, their perception regarding their own group was noticeably different from that of general society.

Biographies of people with disabilities emphasising on their humanity and the value of this very special human experience may lead to questioning common assumptions about disability and people suffering from it. One of the best known historical figures among the people with disabilities was Hellen Keller, a deaf-blind American writer, educator and social activist. The article contains an attempt to challenge the myth of Keller as a “miracle child” by presenting her rich life and the most prominent aspects of her social and political activity.

Opis:
The article explores selected works of Scottish disabled artist Claire Cunningham. It takes recourse to disability studies and new materialism in order to investigate major aspects of her idiosyncratic disability aesthetic. Cunningham’s works are strongly informed by her close care-ful queer relationship with her crutches, perceived as agential and animate more-than-human partners. These works also challenge the model of virtuosity and ablebodiedness, which has long dominated performing arts. Importantly, Cunningham’s disability aesthetic not only determines the shape of her choreographies but also all aspects of the creative process in which she redefines care in the context of disability, where it has traditionally been associated with patronizing and/or charitable activity. In fact, as Ojrzyńska argues, the notions of care, vulnerability, relationality, (inter)dependence, and connectedness are in many ways central to this aesthetic. Hence, by examining the critical and reformative potential of Cunningham’s works and creative process, the article sheds light on the way in which the artist undertakes a crip-queer world-making project to build much-needed artistic environments ‘where things are happening differently.’

The ethical aspect of disability in chosen novels of Dorota Terakowska
Autorzy:

Opis:
The aim of this article is to set out the ethical aspect of disability present in two novels by Dorota Terakowska: Where the angels fall down [Tam, gdzie spadają anioły] and Pupa [Poczwarka]. The philosophy of Simo Vehmas, an author based in Stockholm, is the starting point to ask about ethical issues connected with disability. Vehmas noted three definitions of this phenomenon: universalist, subjectivist, and communitarian. Reading Terakowska’s prose makes it possible to observe two representations of disability in Polish culture (traditional, based on Christianity, the ideology of the Romanticism, and Slavic folk culture, and contemporary, based on the development of medicine and the idea of the welfare state in the second half of the 20th century). Ethical ideas proposed by Terakowska are an interesting alternative to existing views because there is an evident perspective of a person with a disability.

Opis:
The article presents Polish researchers' scientific approaches to the phenomenon of disability in a historical perspective and in view of modern interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical studies. Humanistic and social approaches to disability create a new, interdisciplinary cognitive space. Researchers highlight the strengths, potential and developmental power of people with disabilities more and more clearly. From this perspective, disability is not perceived as an individual problem only. It is becoming apparent that it is necessary to carry out detailed and multidimensional empirical investigations that take into consideration the social, cultural and political context of how people with disabilities live. The article looks at Polish researchers' achievements that fit in with the trend dating from the second half of the 20th century - Disability Studies. The authors review and analyze paradigms of disability to show positivist and humanistic research orientations, methodological pluralism and an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of disability.
