Opis:
With the development of disability studies the awareness of “false universalization of disability” increased. It was realized that both theoretical and practical abuse is to treat disability as the main and even the only factor that binds the environment of people with disabilities. The configurations of the aspects of oppression and discriminatory attitudes have been in fact much more complex and elaborate than it was originally thought according to the promotion of the social model of disability. The article addresses the problem of multiplicity and simultaneous oppression, in which disability co-exists among other factors, considering gender, race or age of human as no less important factors of marginalization, violation of law and social exclusion.

Opis:
The phenomenon of disability, traditionally associated primarily with medicine, psychology and special education, which has resulted in the medicalization of the education of people with disabilities, is now becoming the subject of interest across a range of disciplines. The emergence of the social model of disability in the early 1980s led to the development of Disability Studies and Disability Studies in Education, which refers to the socio-cultural processes of constructing disability and draws attention to previously overlooked or marginalized aspects of the experience of limited ability. The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the emergence and assumptions of Disability Studies in Education in the context of various social ontologies of disability. It will allow us to highlight some of the paradoxes of inclusive pedagogical practices, as well as the opportunities offered by the development of activities based on the combination of theory, practice and research, in accordance with the postulate of including the perspectives of all the educational subjects involved.
Zjawisko niepełnosprawności jest obecnie przedmiotem zainteresowania różnych dyscyplin naukowych i tradycyjnie wiązane było przede wszystkim z medycyną, psychologią i pedagogiką specjalną, co skutkowało medykalizacją podejścia do edukacji osób z niepełnosprawnością. Powstanie społecznego modelu niepełnosprawności na początku lat 80. XX wieku zaowocowało rozwojem nowych dyscyplin badawczych - studiów o niepełnosprawności i studiów o niepełnosprawności w edukacji, które odwołują się do społeczno-kulturowych procesów konstruowania niepełnosprawności, zwracając uwagę na wcześniej pomijane bądź traktowane marginalnie aspekty doświadczania ograniczonej sprawności. Celem artykułu jest rekonstrukcja powstania i założeń edukacyjnych studiów o niepełnosprawności (Disability Studies in Education) w kontekście różnych społecznych ontologii niepełnosprawności. Pozwoli to wskazać zarówno pewne paradoksy inkluzywnych praktyk pedagogicznych, jak i możliwości jakie daje rozwijanie działań opartych na łączeniu teorii, praktyki i badań zgodnie z postulatem uwzględniania perspektyw wszystkich podmiotów zaangażowanych w procesy edukacyjne.

The ethical aspect of disability in chosen novels of Dorota Terakowska

The aim of this article is to set out the ethical aspect of disability present in two novels by Dorota Terakowska: Where the angels fall down [Tam, gdzie spadają anioły] and Pupa [Poczwarka]. The philosophy of Simo Vehmas, an author based in Stockholm, is the starting point to ask about ethical issues connected with disability. Vehmas noted three definitions of this phenomenon: universalist, subjectivist, and communitarian. Reading Terakowska’s prose makes it possible to observe two representations of disability in Polish culture (traditional, based on Christianity, the ideology of the Romanticism, and Slavic folk culture, and contemporary, based on the development of medicine and the idea of the welfare state in the second half of the 20th century). Ethical ideas proposed by Terakowska are an interesting alternative to existing views because there is an evident perspective of a person with a disability.

Opis:
The article concerns Jadwiga Stańczakowa, a blind journalist and writer, and friend of Miron Białoszewski. The author analyses Stańczakowa’s writing as an independent literary phenomenon deserving its own interpretation. Drawing on autobiographical and autoethnographic work by Maria Reimann, who is also an author with a disability, the author observes the emancipatory meaning of blindness. The text present three identities of Jadwiga Stańczakowa. First, the author shows her as a woman and asks if her blindness affected her femininity and sexuality. Secondly, the author interprets fragments of texts written by Stańczakowa during depression. Finally, she describes the writer’s identity, the most autonomous, although they all depend on Białoszewski.

To hide, to disguise, to camouflage : troubling visibility of sound amplifying instruments

In the 19th century, the ear trumpet became a ubiquitous attribute of deaf people. This large clumsy device was synonymous with deaf issues such as misinterpretation and other communication difficulties, leading to deafness being seen as a funny impairment, in contrast to blindness. Deaf users wanted to hide these stigmatizing devices, therefore producers invented sophisticated ways of disguising them as hats, fans or even chairs. Similarly, producers of the new electric hearing aids of the time followed this trend by designing them in the form of bags, jewelry, and glasses (it was still better to be shortsighted than hard-of-hearing). The miniaturization afforded by transistors consequently served the same aim. However, trumpets and especially hearing aids reflect the social and cultural emancipation of deaf communities that took place over the course of the 20th century; from aids bashfully hidden to instruments available in vivid colors and styles (e.g. with animal patterns or in punk styles) and decorated with specially designed jewelry used by the “proud Deaf”. The article is based on twofold empirical research: object-oriented analysis of the ear trumpet and hearing aid collection at Thackray’s Medical Museum (Leeds, Great Britain), and analysis of hearing aid advertisements published in Volta Review since 1910.

Interdisciplinary studies on disability are conducted in the world by scholars from different disciplines and sub-disciplines, including special education. This article deals with an analysis of the evolution of the concept of disability studies and its’ implementation in anthropology that was narrowed to cultural anthropology, primarily of American roots with references to British social anthropology. The basic question, which I answer from the perspective of the cultural anthropologists, is formulated as follows: why cultural anthropology is important in the disability studies? I give answers in the context of: ontological, epistemological, rhetorical and political issues. Anthropological analyzes are preceded by definitions of disability studies after Stteven aylor, Bonnie Shoultz, Pamela Walker; Colin Barnes; Dan Goodley; Sharon L. Snyder; David T. Mitchell and Ronald J. Berger.

In the text, the author demonstrated that regardless of the prevailing regime, the State, by relying on separate laws for people with disabilities (or any other minority group), has created and continues to create colonies of sorts. In the first part of the article, the author presented the difference between postcolonialism and neo-colonialism in relation to people with disabilities and in Disability Studies. Afterward, he highlighted the illusory nature of research and, above all, educational activities in favor of people with disabilities. He argues that in the case of this group of people, we are dealing with neo-colonial pedagogy rather than a postcolonial one.

The article presents the genesis of women’s disability studies as an academic and  social activity of women with disabilities who pointed out that their experiences  were ignored both in general disability studies and in the feminist discourse. The  contemporary aspects of women’s disability studies are presented on the example of  discourses on the body, violence against women with disabilities and their economic situation. The aim of the article is to present women’s disability studies in a context that goes beyond the analyses focused on Europe or the United States of America and broadens the area of interest to include the experiences of women with  disabilities in the countries of the Global South.
