Opis:

This paper gives a critical overview of various analytical approaches dominating the field of discourse studies in the last three decades, from the perspective of their philosophical and formative bases: social constructionism and linguistics. It explores different conceptions and features of the theoretical nexus between these two bases leading to the emergence of three distinct yet apparently complementary strands of thought (i-iii). The paper starts with the account of (i) Laclau and Mouffe’s classical discourse theory and its idea of ‘discursive struggle’ – a struggle of particular ways of talking of and understanding the world in an attempt to achieve discursive (and social) hegemony. Laclau and Mouffe’s assumption that no discourse is a closed entity but rather transformed through contact with other discourses is then taken as the introductory premise to present a vast, complex and heterogeneous family of (ii) critical discourse studies. Critical discourse studies are characterized in the paper as a hub of text-analytical practices that work on the link between language and social reality from the perspective of power and empowerment, explaining how discourse partakes in the production, change and negotiations of ideologically-charged meanings. Most crucially, they establish a methodological link between social theory and linguistics, providing discourse analysis with text-analytical tools and methods. Finally, the paper discusses (iii) three recent discourse analytical models: Discourse Space Theory, Critical Metaphor Analysis and Legitimization-Proximization Model. Originally located in the cognitive-psychological strand of critical discourse studies, these new models can now be seen as fully-fledged discourse theories with their own apparatus of analysis, involving concepts from cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and social psychology. It is argued that these three new theories make a further (and thus far final) step toward consolidation of the social-theoretical and linguistic bases in contemporary discourse studies. The empirical benefits of this consolidation are discussed in the last part of the paper, which includes a brief case study where the new models are used in the analysis of Polish anti-immigration discourse.

Opis:

Discourse studies háve grown into a vast and mullifaceted domain of academie research. Vacillating belween interdisciplinary and eclectic, discourse studies spin around a certain common denominator which seems to be related to the very essence of discursive phenomena. Saussure, Benveniste, Harris, Humboldt and olhers had pinpointed the opposition of process vs. product, or language as it is vs. language in sociál environment, the latter being considered, e.g. by Halliday as its most natural statě and form ofexistence. Discourse studies in Russia háve evolved from multiple roots: text linguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, lexicology, etc. An interdisciplinary and integrational approach admits viewing discourse from both similarly “opposing” sides. Technically it is concatenating words into utterances, utterances into chains, unities, fragments, texts, etc. Functionally and effectively it is leading to new meanings being bom. The ensuing discursive effecl is a result of combining elements into a whole at some point of lime and place, by someone possessing certain sociál and individual characterislics, to achieve certain aims, etc. Discursive practices form a foundation for human praxis in generál. They serve for organizing, categorizing, archiving and interpreting human behavior.The duál nátuře of discourse might suggest a basis for dialogue and reconciliation between systemie and anthropocentrical approaches in linguistics, or even between Sciences and the humanities, in generál.

The paper constitutes a review of a collection of articles entitled ‘Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies’ published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego in 2016 under the editorship of Bożena Cetnarowska, Marcin Kuczok and Marcin Zabawa. Each section of the review contains a critical evaluation of one paper found in the volume. We conclude that although the volume could benefit from more direct discussion pertaining to the methodology of contrastive studies, each of the articles constitutes a significant contribution to its particular domain and is worth-recommending to the reader who desires to keep track of the developments within different areas of the study of language.

Ovaj rad je usredotočen na diskurzivnu konstrukciju tzv. "stabilitokracije" u hrvatskom i srpskom tisku između 2007. i 2017. godine. Veliki korpus članaka iz četiri dnevna lista različitih ideoloških profila iz obiju zemalja istražuje se koristeći metode korpusno utemeljene analize diskursa. S pomoću analize kolokacija i konkordancija rad dokazuje kako se jezično konstruira koncept Jugoistočne Europe kao inherentno nestabilne regije u potrebi vladavine čvrste ruke, kao i kako se zapadne spoznaje prenose u analizirane medije. Zaključci o takvoj uporabi jezika prikazuju sličnosti i razlike u reprodukciji esencijalističkih stereotipa o Jugoistočnoj Europi u tisku obiju analiziranih zemalja.
The paper focuses on the discursive construction of so-called ‘stabilitocracy’ in Croatian and Serbian press between 2007 and 2017. A large corpus of articles from four ideologically diverse daily newspapers from both countries is explored using the methods of corpus-driven discourse analysis. With the help of collocation and concordance analysis, the paper demonstrates how a concept of Southeastern Europe as an inherently unstable region in need of a firm rule is linguistically constructed, as well as how Western expertise is discursively transferred in the analysed media. Findings about this language use demonstrate similarities and differences in the reproduction of essentialist stereotypes about Southeastern Europe in the regional press of the two analysed countries.

Opis:

This essay uses the expansion of decolonial studies in the so-called Decolonial Turn as a starting point to discuss a few recent significant criticisms against this project – notably those arising from decolonial feminism and counter-colonial thinking. The first criticism of the decolonial option refers to its rapid expansion, with a somewhat mythical portrayal of the Modernity/Coloniality project, thus risking the radical quality of initial ideas. Additionally, there is the pertinent criticism of the treatment initially given to the gender issue, which was not addressed by scholars considered to be precursors of this line of thought. Other powerful matters arose as decolonial thinking spread to different social science fields, including questioning the very possibility of criticism from academic circles. These criticisms generate profound reflections on this movement that intends to bring radical transformations to conservative academic knowledge production. Assuming that coloniality is constitutive of the present, we take these criticisms to look at decoloniality in the field of language studies. On that ground, we maintain that any epistemological breach must start from the contradictions of modernity. We believe that critical discourse studies improve understanding by situating intertextuality and interdiscursivity as inevitable aspects of every discourse, including academic theories and practices.

Opis:

This paper gives an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and current work in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). It defines CDA as a transdisciplinary, text-analytical approach to critical social research, aimed at revealing the power imbalance reflected in the use of language and patterns of dominance imposed through the use of language. Describing the most important schools and models in CDA, the paper demonstrates how critical approaches draw on recent developments in different areas of linguistics, such as pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and corpus studies. At the same time, it shows how the interdisciplinary research agenda of CDA attracts the ‘classic’ theories and tools of linguistics to new empirical territories in political/public discourse. The final part of the paper illustrates the explanatory power of the legitimization-proximization model in CDA in a case study of the discourse of the war-on-terror.

Opis:

At the present stage of the reception of Foucault’s ideas, various theoretical and methodological trends coexist, within which the concepts of Michel Foucault are used fruitfully in empirical research. One of them is discourse studies understood as an inter- and transdisciplinary research area. This article distinguishes and describes three post-Foucauldian strategies of discourse analysis, the combined use of which in one research project is a proposal to integrate concepts scattered in Foucault’s various works. The strategies distinguished (archaeological, alethurgical, and dispositif) are characterized by the different analytical categories, understanding of discourse, and its relations with knowledge and power. The article presents selected results of the complementary use of concepts such as knowledge formation, alethurgy, confession, or the dispositif in the empirical research on the reform of higher education in Poland.

Opis:

Positioning Theory represents a useful approach for studying cultural conceptualizations and patterns of language use. The notion could also be implemented in cross-cultural research, for example in contrastive discourse studies. Nevertheless, cross-cultural studies of positioning are rare. The aim of this paper is to elaborate foundations for further methodological considerations and practical applications of the Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies. It gives theoretical considerations, reflects existing literature where the notion is implemented in discourse studies and presents examples from a pilot study conducted to analyse the cross-cultural potential of positioning. By doing so, it identifies the possibilities and methodological challenges of the notion that arise when it is implemented in contrastive discourse analysis, beyond its initial role in Interaction Analysis. The implementation of Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies seems useful to shed light on specific cultural positions as well as formal and functional patterns of discursive positioning practices and resources. A contrastive discourse analysis that aims at cross-culturally comparing positioning activities requires extensive reflections on the analytical and methodological as well as theoretical levels. A requirement for the design of such studies is the use of operationalizable categories as analysed objects. Further challenges emerge regarding implicit positioning and the need to include cultural knowledge.
Die Positionierungsforschung stellt einen nützlichen Ansatz für die Untersuchung kultureller Konzeptualisierungen und Sprachgebrauchsmuster dar, der sich auch für kulturvergleichende Studien anbieten würde. Positionierung kann sich etwa für die kontrastive Analyse von Diskursen nützlich erweisen. Trotzdem erscheinen kontrastive Untersuchungen von Positionierungsaktivitäten selten. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Grundlagen für weitere Überlegungen und praktische Anwendungen des Positionierungsansatzes in der kontrastiven Diskurslinguistik herauszuarbeiten. Dabei geht es darum, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen des ursprünglich gesprächs- und interaktionsanalytischen Positionierungsansatzes für seine Anwendung in kontrastiven Diskursanalysen sichtbar zu machen. Zu diesem Zweck werden theoretische Überlegungen und eine Auswertung diskurslinguistischer Arbeiten, die sich der Positionierungstheorie bedienen, vorgenommen. Zugleich werden Beispiele für die kontrastive Anwendung des Ansatzes gegeben, die aus einer Pilotstudie zum kulturvergleichenden Potenzial von Positionierungsforschung kommen. Die Implementierung des Positionierungsansatzes in die kontrastive Diskurslinguistik erscheint nützlich, um spezifische kulturelle Diskurspositionenals auch formale und funktionale Besonderheiten sprachlicher Positionierungspraktiken und -ressourcen zu beleuchten. Eine kontrastive diskurslinguistische Analyse, die auf den Vergleich von Positionierungsaktivitäten abzielt, verlangt einer vertieften Reflexion auf der analytisch-methodischen und auf der erkenntnistheoretischen Ebene. In diesem Zusammenhang ist es eine Anforderung für die Ausgestaltung einer kontrastiven diskurslinguistischen Positionierungsuntersuchung, operationalisierbare Kategorien als den Untersuchungsgegenstand zu bestimmen. Weitere Herausforderungen zeigen sich in Hinsicht auf implizite Positionierungen und die Notwendigkeit, kulturelles Wissen miteinzubeziehen.

Praca ta ma na celu zarysowanie pozycji zajmowanej przez grupy mężczyzn z prorównościowych organizacji podczas dyskusji odwołujących się do tematu równości płci. Dyskusja odnosi się do przypadków Men Engage Europe i Maschile Plurale, dwóch luźno zorganizowanych grup mężczyzn, które wspierają równouprawnienie płci na różne sposoby, na poziomie ponadnarodowym Unii Europejskiej, a także odwołując się do realiów panujących we włoskich miastach. Część głosów obu organizacji została zebrana podczas dwóch częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadów przeprowadzonych w ramach mojej pracy doktorskiej. Praca argumentuje, że mężczyźni popierający równouprawnienie płci próbują uczestniczyć w feminizmie z trudnej pozycji „cichych” podmiotów. Mówiąc dokładniej, twierdzę, że podejście „siostrzanego ruchu” w feminizmie prowadzi do nadrzędnych dyskusji na temat równości płci, w których pozycja mężczyzny jest niewypowiedziana. Opierając się na tych przesłankach, staram się przedstawić pewne refleksje na temat tego, co zostało osiągnięte i co być może zagubiło się w tym procesie.
This paper sets off to outline some reflections on the subject position occupied by pro-equality men’s groups within overarching discourses of gender equality. Discussion makes reference to the cases of Men Engage Europe and Maschile Plurale, two loosely organized networks of men that support gender equality in different ways at the EU supranational-level and the Italian national-level respectively. Fragments of the voices of these organizations were gathered during two semi-structured interview conducted in the context of my doctoral fieldwork. This paper argues that men supporting gender equality attempt to participate in feminism from the difficult position of ‘unspoken’ subjects. More specifically, I argue that the tension between narrative of inclusion and narratives of ‘sisterhood’ within feminism produce overarching discourses of gender equality in which men’s subject position is unspoken. Based on these premises, I attempt to offer some reflections on what is gained and what is perhaps lost in the process.

The purpose of this article is to show my methodological considerations and the results of three year research for my bachelor's and master's thesis. I present my entire research procedure in the context of research into contemporary functions and the discourse of performance around the site of the former KL Płaszów camp. In order to obtain the knowledge and materials needed to carry out the research, I used the tools of the case study method, including the implementation of in-depth interviews, expert interviews, structured observations and mental maps that helped me create a code book and use Critical Discourse Analysis (KAD). In the spirit of understanding sociology and the grounded theory paradigm, supported by the resources of the theoretical orientation of culturalist sociology of the city, I carried out research which, in my opinion, showed the effectiveness of KAD in analysing and solving social problems of contemporary cities.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie rozważań metodologicznych, stanowiących efekt trzyletnich badań do pracy licencjackiej oraz magisterskiej. W poniższym tekście przybliżam całość swojego postępowania badawczego w kontekście badania współczesnych funkcji oraz dyskursu tworzącego się wokół terenu byłego obozu KL Płaszów. Aby uzyskać wiedzę i materiały potrzebne do realizacji badań, wykorzystałem zaplecze narzędziowe metody studium przypadku, w tym realizacji wywiadów po-głębionych, wywiadów eksperckich, obserwacji ustrukturyzowanych oraz map mentalnych, które doprowadziły mnie do stworzenia książki kodowej i przeprowadzenia Krytycznej Analizy Dyskursu (KAD). Działając w duchu socjologii rozumiejącej i paradygmatu teorii ugruntowanej wspartej przez zasoby teoretyczne orientacji kulturalistycznej socjologii miasta zrealizowałem badania, które w moim odczuciu stanowią istotny argument potwierdzający skuteczność KAD w analizowaniu i rozwiązywaniu problemów społecznych współczesnych miast.

Мировоззренческий горизонт (Weltanschauung), оценивая границы между правдой и ложным сокращением содержания сообщений в области культивирования эмоциональной политики, направлен на то, чтобы найти возможность трансформационной оценки новой «базы данных», чтобы поверить и аналогичным образом показать метод пост-правды, который принимает существование одного иррационального метода. в обществе. Поэтому в этой статье автор занимается вопросом: является ли феномен пост-правды надежным и систематическим критическим предложением для обоснования социальных норм? Позволяет ли применение условий этой пост-правды безошибочно принимать решения в различных моральных ситуациях? В этих исследованиях цель состоит в том, чтобы проанализировать внутреннее и внешнее лицо явлений пост-правды, их подделок и актов симуляции истины.

Given the marked presence of humour in many areas of thought and language, as well as in people’s social, emotional, and aesthetic experiences, it comes as no surprise that humour studies are considered an interesting interdiscipline worth studying. This paper is, therefore, an attempt at joining three academic fields, namely advertising discourse, Cultural Linguistics, and humour studies. The author will enquire into the operation of (debatable) humour applied in multimodal advertising discourse. She will make the cultural aspect the focus of attention in order to highlight the role of cross-cultural differences in the perception of humour. Based on her previous studies (Stwora 2020a, 2020b) on attitudinal responses to controversial humorous ads in English, she will join in an exploratory discussion with a view to showing the ways in which ad reception may be influenced by the culture-specific force of humour. Working towards a more comprehensive outlook on humour in use in the context of advertising discourse, the present paper will start with a few words on humour in general and on debatable humour in ads. Then, the cultural side of humour will be discussed. Finally, the author will discuss her research from the cultural standpoint.

The cause and consequences of the genre heterogeneity of Władysław Orkan’s Listy ze wsi [Letters from the village] The subject of the article is the genre diversity of Władysław Orkan’s social texts published in the Polish press of the interwar period titled Letters from the village [originally: Listy ze wsi]. Thanks to the use of discursive analysis’ elements of press statements, attempts are made to determine the reasons for the polygence of Podhale’s eulogist’s journalistic texts. The genological complexity of Władysław Orkan’s analyzed texts was due to a number of factors related to the pragmatic and communicative situation, as well as to the author’s creative individuality. Hence, the smooth crossing of the boundaries of journalistic discourse in favor of its fictional counterpart became the reason for creating journalistic artistically signed texts, shaped in a particular way as a result of the author’s attitude, manifested in the care for readers’ satisfaction.

Część pierwsza zawiera opis ogólnych trudności związanych z porządkowaniem rozległego obszaru badań nad dyskursem; część druga poświęcona jest statusowi badań nad dyskursem w polskiej pedagogice oraz analizie treści i zakresu pojęcia dyskursu edukacyjnego. W rezultacie, opisane zostały trzy ujęcia definicyjne: archeologiczne, instytucjonalne i interakcyjne oraz możliwości konstruowania w ich ramach map pojęciowych. Artykuł kończy próba podsumowania rozważań w kontekście koncepcji dyskursywnego konstruowania przedmiotu pedagogiki współczesnej.
The aim of the paper is a reflection on the status and importance of the category of discourse in pedagogical language and research. The article consists of two main parts. The first part contains a description of the general difficulties in organizing the extensive area of research on discourse; the second part is devoted to the status of research on discourse in pedagogy and to the analysis of the concept of educational discourse. As a result, three approaches: archaeological, institutional and interactive, and the possibility of constructing conceptual maps within their frameworks, have been described. The article ends with an attempt to summarise the considerations in the context of the discursive construction of the subject of contemporary educational studies.

This paper aims at a synthetic presentation of four representative research practices in the first stage of postcolonial studies concerned with Polish literature of the Romantic period. This is currently one of the key tools utilised in the studies of Polish Romanticism, which proved to offer a considerable scope for revisions, especially with regard to the myth of the Borderlands and Messianism, thus enabling major Romantic ideologies and myths to be redefined in terms of identity. An analysis of research discourses reveals the shortcomings and benefits of the postcolonial method when employed in the studies of Polish Romanticism. On the one hand, an all too rigid application of the tools has led to certain interpretive simplifications of Romantic texts, while on the other the authors of the discussed works were able to conceptualize the identities of Polish Romantic literature anew.

Decolonial scholarship, although multifaceted, includes questioning how abstract theorisations could concretely reform department-specific pedagogies. This study builds on the proposition that decolonisation is served, at least partially, by department-specific pedagogies that oppose whiteness. It is grounded in a Department of English at a historically-white South African university. Using critical whiteness studies (CWS), I launch a discourse analysis of the experiential narratives expressed by Teaching Assistants during individual interviews. CWS equips me to examine how these contractually-employed educators manage their intersectional subjectivities as they facilitate small-group discussions among undergraduates in support of professors’ official lectures. I focus on their reactions to the way students explore experiences of subordination.

Opis:

The article focuses on the Siberian text of Russian literature – its definition and structure. Referring to Toporov’s concept, which became an intellectual and methodological challenge for Russian researchers, the author points out that Toporov emphasized the uniqueness of the Saint Petersburgian text, whereas in the Russian humanities, apart from the Moscow text, a number of regional/local texts were created: Crimean, Caucasian, Ural, and Siberian. The specificity of regional texts, including Siberian, requires a broader methodological basis (interdisciplinary approach). Therefore the article analyzes several proposals by Russian researchers regarding the methodological approach to this cultural phenomenon. In addition, it indicates pitfalls and difficulties which should be taken into account in this type of spatial study.

The article discusses a special kind of narrative about the catastrophe, treated as a specific genre of writing: the theory of literature of the Holocaust. The article presents its two most significant (although not the only ones) features: firstly, the conviction about its unusual character as compared to other genres/forms of writing, sometimes secretly described by such concepts as the uniqueness of the Holocaust (which metonymizes not only the event itself but also the narrations referring to it) and, secondly, identifies all text-producing entities (narrator, author etc.), simultaneously constituting the basic feature of the most important genre/modality of this kind of writing which is testimony. The article presents the examples of Polish and foreign scholars portraying this state of affairs.

Mediatization of politics, including historical politics which takes a crucial part in the process of creating collective memory, is a fact. Media - as a carrier of memory - are used to circulate the images of the past and the present and give meaning to them. The objective of this article was an attempt to analyze Polish media discourse between 1965 and 1989/90 with reference to the phenomenon of creating memory about Polish-German reconciliation. In what way, taking into consideration the role of press and media in creating memory, was the memory about the most significant in the discussion about Polish-German reconciliation events (Letter of Reconciliation of the Polish Bishops to the German Bishops, kneeling of Willy Brandt in front of the monument commemorating 500 thousand Jewish people murdered by Nazis) created, presented, in what way was it commemorated in "Tygodnik Powszechny" and "Polityka" between 1965-1989/90. The following paper attempts to describe the changing media discourse (its elements and qualities) which was the basis for building the image of Polish-German reconciliation emerging from the source material.

The article opens with a statement that dramaturgical creativity, long marginalized by literary studies, has returned to the area of its interest together with its researchers’ use of the achievements of performative and cultural turns. Taking these into account allows us to treat drama as a distinctive literary practice in which the reception of a text is exemplary. As the author claims, with the New Humanities, integrating scattered reading perspectives known to the history of literary studies into the horizons of New Positivity, dramatic studies enrich this standpoint and maintain a critical view making creative use of the antagonism of perspectives, confrontation of attitudes, conflict of qualities or different visions and ideas. The potential tensions revealed in the practice of active reading of a literary text in accordance with the dramatic matrix guarantee the positive effects of each act of engaged reading. The dramatization of tradition is a specific field of critical dialogue between the reader and the existing literary tradition. Three dramatic works by Jan Czapliński are indicated as examples of mediators for this dialogue. The work of this playwright presents and suggests a critical reading of the characters and works of Gabriela Zapolska, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Adam Mickiewicz, leading to the emancipation of their works that is situated beyond the framework of the discursively created, existing canon of contemporary Polish literature and culture. A critical view enriches and updates the canon. Dramatization, which allows the revaluation of existing values, appears as the basic category of contemporary art – revealing existing, usually ineffable conflicts and using them to build new, positive values.

Discussed book undertakes the issues of relations between the gender of the author, evaluation of literary quality of their work and actual features of the texts, thus fitting in the larger trend of research on gender stereotypes in language and literature. The innovative use of quantitative methods also grants it an important place within literatureon stylometric, making it an interdisciplinary work.

Opis:

One can broadly divide research on higher education settings into three strands investigating 1) the production of specialized scientific knowledge, 2) the dynamics of institutional power (academic decision-making and governance), 3) teaching and learning. In all three areas the notion of ‘discourse’ has been salient in the last decades. However, the term is often understood differently by researchers from different fields, and the respective disciplines haven’t always been receptive one to another. In the paper we present an overview of discursive approaches to the study of higher education in 1) social theory, poststructuralism in particular, and 2) linguistics. We explain the outlook on discourse which is prevalent in these areas and present the most significant studies on higher education contexts conducted within them. We argue that while social theory often lacks analytical detail and focus on empirical objects, linguistics on the other hand does not account for the way practices produce and reproduce social order. Therefore, a study of academic discourse drawing on both strands would enable putting forward a robust theory and a precise methodology. In the last section of the paper we present an outline of such a field informed by both poststructuralism and pragmatics – Social Studies of Higher Education.

Complex Orientalism: Soviet Kurdology and Kurdish Nation Building

The primary purpose of this thesis is to fill the research gap that exists in Soviet and Russian studies – that is the study on the Kurdology department which existed in Soviet Armenia and Soviet Russian cities of Leningrad and Moscow. The Kurdology department in the Soviet Union was one of the few to exist globally – other research centers being located in France, and later on in Turkey. The Soviet Kurdology department has managed to publish hundreds of manuscripts, fictional stories, novels, and academic pieces on Kurdish history and politics that have not been thoroughly studied by Russia studies and Middle Eastern studies academics before. These archival materials not only contribute to the gaps that exist within studies of Kurdish history, but also reveal the complex Soviet state mechanisms that these materials were produced under. Kurdologists were operating under a complex form of Orientalism as practiced by the Soviet Union. The Soviet form of Orientalism can be defined as complex in that it does not entirely adhere to the definitions of Edward Said in his conception of Western form of Orientalism, in which he argued that Western scholarship on the Orient was a power vehicle that promoted Western superiority over Oriental cultures in its mission to colonize them. In the Soviet case, the power influence over central discourse was rather hybrid – native Kurds actively participated in the Kurdology departments in Yerevan and Leningrad, and actively influenced their identity construction within the Soviet Union. In contrast, such privileges did not exist for their Kurdish kin in Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria. However, Kurdologists also were mandated to adhere to the Soviet language of state socialism in order to interrogate the central discourse and incorporate their own political ideologies and aspirations, such as the Kurdish national liberation movement. Through demonstrating the hybrid and complex nature of the Orientalism practiced by the Soviet Union through Kurdology Studies, exploring the limitations of Orientalist Kurdish identity constructions, and addressing the nuanced and uniquely-situated freedoms Kurds possessed in their constructing identity within the Soviet Union, I ultimately argue that the Soviet Union utilized the Kurdology department as a way to construct and promote its own hegemonic discourse of what a Kurd is, or, more specifically, what a Kurd living within the borders of the Soviet Union is. Through incorporate Foucadian discourse analysis and Bakhtin’s heteroglossia, I will exposes how constructions of Soviet-Kurdish identity simultaneously created unique forms of expression, involving but not limited to secularization of the identity and centralization of Yezidis in Kurdish identity construction, essentialization of Kurdish identity and history, and proliferation of liberatory and anti-imperialist narrative in Soviet-Kurdish historiography.

Opis:

The development of national community in the light of the 16th century historiographic writing. Reconnaissance The paper constitutes an element of a large scale project whose aim consists in the reconstruction of the identity discourse of the First Republic of Poland in historiographic writing. The sketch presents selected linguistic and extra-linguistic mechanism used in historiography for the purpose of developing national community (at that time understood as the nation of the gentry) and strengthening its internal bonds. The mechanisms used to be referred to as cognitive or visual propaganda. The goal of the paper is achieved by means of the presentation of the linguistic means used for the purpose of shaping historical consciousness as the foundation of national community or expressions referring to the basic concepts related to the national community, i.e. names of the country (kingdom, crown, homeland, state, Poland, republic, the Sarmatia), citizens (Polanie, Polacy, Lechy, Lachy, the Sarmatians) and finally – indication of the role of the graphic code. The source documentation includes 16th century Polish language catalogues of monarchs treated as a tool of social communication and the strategic element of state policy.

This article begins with a delineation of the context of contemporary professional journalism, particularly its market-driven, technologically advanced and discursively diverse character. Journalism studies scholars trace media evolution with the aid of content analyses. On the other hand, linguists, including stylisticians, try to capture recent changes in media language with the use of qualitative methods, e.g., with categories derived from discourse analysis, which enable them to see how hegemonic discourses are (re)constructed in journalistic texts. This article elaborates on the category of rhetorical style and shows its applicability to the studies of various media “rhetorics.” Following a review of literature and of author’s own projects, the article illustrates possible applications of and results of the analyses with the use of rhetorical style as a functional analytical category to delimit generic, register and stylistic variations of media discourse including its subgenres (e.g. headlines).

Discussed book undertakesthe issues of relations between the gender of the author, evaluation of literary quality of their work andactual features of the texts, thus fitting in the larger trend of research on gender stereotypes in languageand literature. The innovative use of quantitative methods also grants it an important place within literatureon stylometric, making it an interdisciplinary work.

The article analyses the ways in which Sylwia Chutnik uses the category of space to break cognitive schemes and stop the reproduction of discourses which support them. Thanks to “anthropological shift of perspective” (T. Rakowski), warm irony and empathy the author of Pocket Atlas of Women (Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet) shows the lives of people “without a voice” and their inner world full of existential tensions. At the same time, the narrative strategy of Chutnik supports undermining and reinterpreting of the dominant cultural patterns, explores the phenomenon of exclusion and looking for points of subversive character that enables to go beyond fossilized and objectified paradigms.

Opis:

Aside from it being a crime, genocide is a very important subject of social sciences. The aim of the paper is to prove the thesis, that ideological discourses (not: ideologies) are an important part of genocidal mobilization. Ideological discourse establishes not only cultural myths (the codes of popular culture) that define what is normal in social life, but also institutions, habituses, social roles, etc. Therefore discourse plays direct and indirect role in mobilization. This article is based on critical discourse analysis theory, historical sociology paradigm and genocide studies. Legal definition of genocide does not easily lend itself to empirical and historical research. Therefore the author proposes the new definition of genocide and the list of genocides. There are seven main ideological discourses, which spurred genocidal mobilization in the XX century: (1) nationalist discourse, (2) Realpolitik discourse, (3) racist discourse, (4) medical/epidemiological discourse, (5) fundamentalist religious discourse, (6) conspiracy discourse and (7) discourse of usefulness and parasitism. These discourses are constructed as social texts and immediately translated into social constructs. The paper explores these discourses, that were crucial for the formation of modern genocides.
Ludobójstwo, oprócz tego, że jest zbrodnią, stanowi bardzo ważny przedmiot nauk społecznych. Celem artykułu jest dowiedzenie tezy, że dyskursy ideologiczne (nie ideologie) są ważną częścią mobilizacji ludobójczej. Dyskurs ideologiczny ustanawia nie tylko kulturowe mity (kody kultury popularnej), które określają, co jest normalne w życiu społecznym, ale również instytucje, habitusy, role społeczne itd. Dlatego dyskurs odgrywa zarówno bezpośrednią, jak i pośrednią rolę w mobilizacji. Artykuł ten oparty jest na krytycznej szkole analizy dyskursu, paradygmacie socjologii historycznej oraz studiach nad ludobójstwem. Prawna definicja ludobójstwa nie daje się łatwo wykorzystać w empirycznych i historycznych badaniach ludobójstwa. Dlatego autor zaproponował nową definicję ludobójstwa i listę ludobójstw. Wyróżniono siedem dyskursów ideologicznych, które wpływały na ludobójczą mobilizację w XX wieku: (1) dyskurs nacjonalistyczny, (2) Realpolitik, (3) rasistowski, (4) medyczno-epidemiologiczny, (5) fundamentalistyczno-religijny, (6) spiskowy oraz (7) użyteczności i pasożytnictwa. Dyskursy te są konstruowane jako społeczne teksty i natychmiastowo przekładane na społeczne konstrukty. Artykuł bada wymienione dyskursy, które były kluczowe dla ukształtowania się nowoczesnych ludobójstw.

Opis:

The main point of view demonstrated in the present paper is to express criticism to those program of foreign language studies which still rely on the traditional approach to language education and favor the development of linguistic competence in students. Harmonious functioning of the contemporary world depends, to much extent, on human coexistence and communication both on the micro and macro scale. In the case of the macro scale contacts, the English language has been sanctioned an international means of communication. The examination of the Internet resources with reference to higher education language programs of studies as well as programs oered by some language schools, shows that the teaching/learning process is mainly concentrated on developing students' linguistic competence. The Polish reality of practical English application in a variety of situations shows that the language user's knowledge, when limited to the linguistic sphere only, is not sucient. Therefore, the aim of the present paper is to turn the reader's attention to the need of verication of educational policy, adopted by many higher education institutions, and expand the oered programs of studies by courses directing the teaching/learning process at the functional approach. Hence, the suggested in the present discussion approach would rely on giving priority to the development of communicative competence, instead of linguistic.

Aim. The aim of the research is to examine how Mainland China and Chinese people are represented in the visual materials of four sets of Liberal Studies (LS) textbooks in Hong Kong. Methods. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, viewing language as a social practice and van Dijk’s ideological coding categories are integrated to analyze discursive representations (e.g., the embedded hidden power) in the Hong Kong Today volumes published by four influential commercial publishers: Modern, Ming Pao, Marshall, and Aristo. Results. The analysis reveals that China and mainland Chinese are negatively portrayed in visual images in four commercial LS textbooks, in which, the representations concerning mainland China and mainlanders are all found ideologically biased to highlight their negative characteristics and alienness. Conclusions. Via an overview of Hong Kong’s history, economy, educational policies, and controversial political events, the reasons why China and its people are represented negatively in LS textbooks is explained.

After the fall of the communist system, cities of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone complex transformation resulting from such processes as democratization, marketization or globalization. Collapse of the communist regime not only was a turning point in political context, but it also introduced changes and initiated processes which have significantly influenced architecture and urban planning as well as the way of thinking about a city in broader social and cultural context. Although it is a quarter of a century, the process of re-defining and formulating a new urban identity initiated at that time has been still taking place. Lodz is a very interesting example of a post-communist and post-industrial city, where current identity discourse is strongly associated with revitalisation projects.The authors represent two fields of humanities: art history and cultural anthropology. The aim of joint research is to carry out analysis that will help answer the question of how a new Lodz identity is created and how a city identity is managed within the scope of planned and already undertaken revitalisation actions.

Major English equivalents of the Polish impersonal "-no/-to" construction in translated academic prose : a parallel corpus-driven study of research article abstracts

This study explores some of the factors underlying the choice from among the major English translation equivalents of the Polish impersonal construction with -no/-to verb forms in academic writing. Based on a parallel corpus of 487 Polish abstracts of research articles in linguistics and their English versions, Multiple Correspondence Analysis is deployed as an exploratory technique to identify potential associations among three types of constructions employed in the English target texts and four usage features related to the Polish source texts. Binary Logistic Regression is then used on a subset of the data with two most frequent constructions to determine the significance and strength of the correlations. The results indicate that while the agentless passive is the default structural equivalent of the Polish -no/-to construction, three factors may prompt the use of an active-voice structure with an inanimate subject, which was found to be the second major equivalent. These factors include: the presence of a locative adjunct referring to the study being summarized, the semantic type of the process denoted by the -no/-to verb, and the length of the NP functioning as the complement of the verb. The fourth usage feature under examination, namely the position of the complement in relation to the verb, seems to be less significantly correlated with the translation choice between the two major constructions in English.

Depicting the feasible actions of a linguist interested in media research, the autlior presents two dominant research approaches and the problems relaled therewilh. She hypothetically distinguishes the role of a linguist - hegemonie leader and the role of a linguist - sovereign.The hegemonie approach means a clearly specified research subject, i.e. the media language, a precisely specified scope of analyses and the supremacy of research methods deriving from linguistics.The linguist - sovereign prefers an open approach, considering the appropriately selected achievements of media studies and related disciplines in his/her analyses and interpretations. He/she characterizes irt his/her own manner the media vision of the world, the stylistic diversification of media messages, media genres, placing the selected issues in a discourse perspective. The dynamics of research shaped in such manner has resulled in proclaiming a new sub-discipline within linguistics referred to as media linguistics.

Families, including those with children, constitute a significant group of people crossing the Polish-Belarusian border. The aim of this article is to analyse the discourse on the Polish-Belarusian border in the context of the place that the category of “family” finds in it, and what role and responsibility is assigned to children and parents. The theoretical framework for these reflections is primarily critical childhood studies. For this purpose, the author analyzed Polish-language online statements about the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border published between mid-August 2021 and the 1st of January 2023. The research included statements by institutional actors (e.g. Border Guard), media publications as well as public comments by social media users (Twitter). In the case of the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, the term “family” is used in a variety of ways – from building a sense of symbolic solidarity (the “Families Without Borders” group), through referring this term to the presence of particularly vulnerable people among migrants, to attributing responsibility for the risks regarding the situation of children at the border to either parents or state institutions, depending on the discourse. Reflections on the Polish-Belarusian border seem to be part of the tensions related to the concepts of “family”, “parenthood” and “children”.

This article focuses on the methodology of studying the reception of historical fiction films by means of press coverage. Although a common practice, it is usually taken for granted without additional methodological reflection. Using the example of three films and their reviews in the Polish press, the article highlights the need to specify the reception’s discursive frameworks on a case-by-case-basis. The political, geographic, or time-related contexts of the historical fiction films significantly modify their modes of interpretation.
Artykuł koncentruje się na metodologii badania recepcji filmów historycznych z zastosowaniem recenzji i artykułów prasowych. Mimo że jest to powszechna praktyka, to stosowana jest zazwyczaj jako oczywistość, bez dodatkowej refleksji metodologicznej. Na przykładzie trzech filmów oraz komentarzy, które ukazały się na ich temat w prasie, artykuł zwraca uwagę na konieczność każdorazowego określania ram dyskursu, w którym odbywa się odbiór. Polityczny, geograficzny czy czasowy kontekst funkcjonowania filmów historycznych istotnie zmienia bowiem sposoby jego odczytania.

The article attempts to summarize the key, in the author’s opinion, threads of the contemporary border-science debate. Opis:

The purpose of the article is to show the evolution of the concepts of “figure”, “image” and “reputation” in the Russian language in the last fifty years, to analyze their use in modern political discourse. The corpus study on the material of modern political journalism, showed that “image”, the emotionally affecting perception of a person, does not always coincide with the “figure” as the type or character associated with the speaker. Content-analysis of the use of lexemes imidzh, obraz, reputatsiya showed that in the semantic plan they influenced each other, becoming synonyms in various meanings. The semantic evolution of the word imidzh went from an impression of appearance to stereotypical ideas that can be appreciated by society. The “figure”, judging by the Russian National Corpus data, today looks more like a “role” in a film or a play, responding to the theatricalization of the political process. An analysis of the speeches of the president, the prime minister of the country, regional rulers, deputies, and opposition leaders reveals the “masks” of the Grate-Powerman and Patriot, People’s Chosen, Ordinary Man, Strong Man (Powerful Hand), Debater, Distressor, and some others, used as an element of a discursive strategy.

The aim of the article is to present several popular Russian portals on which present-day ‘witches’ offer their magical services: curses, magic spells for love, health etc. The first half of the work sees a short overview of the result of current research works into Internet folklore, socalled e-folklore, cyber folklore, netlore. Also, attention is drawn to the discussion conducted within academia as to the notion of ‘folklore,’ as well as the basic tasks and goals of contemporary Folklore Studies. Finally, there are formulated those traits characterising contemporary magical discourse in Russia, which includes, among other things, a fairly widely held belief in magic, a positive evaluation of folk magic and the intertwining of magic and religion.

The article considers the question of the correlation of the subject and research methodology of functional stylistics and discourse analysis (primarily French tradition of discourse analysis - DA). It takes into account the change of modem linguistics from a structural paradigm to a functional one. It states the compared subjects refer to speech studies (speech linguistics) and account for the process of speech activity and its extralinguistic factors. It also proposes the definition of «discourse» . The emphasis is that unlike traditional stylistics which P. Serio distanced away from, modem works on functional stylistics are close to discourse analysis (DA).

This is a critical profile of Wiadomości Bibliograficzne Warszawskie [Warsaw Bibliographical News], a learned journal with a mission to keep a systematic record of current Polish publications and provide bibliographic information about their contents, published in 1882–1886 Teodor Paprocki, a leading Warsaw bookseller. The article outlines the history of the journal; analyzes its structure, layout, contents, editorial techniques, and its functioning in the bookselling trade and the academic community; and, finally, assesses its role in the development of professional bibliography writing in Poland.
Artykuł stanowi próbę opisu czasopisma bibliograficzno-recenzyjnego „Wiadomości Bibliograficzne Warszawskie”, poświęconego bieżącej rejestracji polskiej produkcji wydawniczej oraz bibliografii zawartości czasopism. Pismo wydawane było przez księgarza Teodora Paprockiego w Warszawie w latach 1882–1886. W artykule omówiono jego historię, strukturę, szatę graficzną, zawartość treści, metodę opracowania oraz rolę, jaką czasopismo pełniło w środowisku pracowników książki i naukowym oraz odegrało w rozwoju polskiej bibliografii księgarskiej.

Many studies of postcolonial translation feature analyses of translational and publishing decisions and their potential influences on the relationships between the colonizers and the colonized (e.g. Jacquemond 1992, Tymoczko 1999, Spivak 2009). This article proposes a different methodology, focusing instead on the presence of translated postcolonial literature in Poland through a systematic, discursive study of its reception. Based on the results of an unpublished doctoral study (Gołuch 2013) – which analysed nearly a thousand reviews of African, Indian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern writing, published in the Polish press between 1970 and 2010 – the article demonstrates that Polish reviewers increasingly often affirm Polish-postcolonial similarities, even if Orientalist, othering discourses remain present in the reviews. This finding contributes to timely debates about Polish self-perceptions. Emphasising the otherness or exoticism of postcolonial texts and contexts, the reviewers tend to write from the position of Europeans and to identify with Orientalist biases. Yet, the emerging discourse comparing postcolonial experiences of migration, independence struggle, and post-independence complexes with Poland’s own past and present offers an interesting counterbalance to a long-standing tradition of othering perceptions. Focusing on specific similarities, some reviewers seem to think of Poland and themselves in postcolonial terms. Furthermore, the article contributes to scholarship on Polish postcolonialism. Numerous incisive studies have examined the Partitions of Poland (1795–1918), Nazi occupation (1939–1945) and Soviet domination (1945–1989) in terms of colonisation, at the same time employing postcolonial tools to revisit issues of Polish domination over Belarusians, Lithuanians and Ukrainians, as well as Polish attitudes to non-European colonised peoples (e.g. Thompson 2000, Kłobucka 2001, Cavanagh 2003, Fiut 2003, Bakuła 2006, Janion 2006, Buchholtz 2009, Gosk 2010, Kołodziejczyk 2010, Skórczewski 2013, Wojda 2015). Notably, the themes of Poland’s status as a colonised and colonising country within the immediate region, on the one hand, and Polish perceptions of non-European postcolonial peoples, on the other, tend to be explored separately (cf. Wajda 2015). This article, however, suggests that a Polish postcolonial self-image might be manifesting in response to an encounter with translated postcolonial writing, and generally argues for bringing the two thematic strands together to explore further the interdependencies between Poland’s postcolonialism and Polish attitudes to non-European postcolonials.

Przeprowadzona analiza tekstów reprezentujących dyskurs posthumanizmu wykazała, że jest to dyskurs o charakterze ideologicznym, o kluczowej roli komponentu tematycznego. Charakterystyczna dla tego dyskursu jest także leksyka specjalna, neosemantyczne struktury nieciągłe oraz pytania jako element dynamizujący. Punktem odniesienia dla dyskursu posthumanizmu jest tradycyjny – antropocentryczny – porządek rzeczywistości, co poświadcza specyficzny obraz świata akcentujący równość wszelkich gatunków żywych i bytów transhumanistycznych. Dyskurs posthumanizmu wzbogaca współczesną przestrzeń komunikacyjną, poszerza kategorię podmiotu i reinterpretuje pojęcie kultury komunikacji.
An analysis of texts representing the post-humanism discourse(s) has indicated that the discourse is an ideological one with the key role of a thematic component. Specialist lexis and neo-semantic discontinuous terms and expressions are of importance here together with questions as an element of added dynamics. The point of reference for the post-humanism discourse is the traditional, anthropocentric world order as confirmed by a specific picture of the world emphasizing the equality of all living species and trans-human entities. The post-humanism discourse enriches contemporary communication, extends the subject category and re-interprets the notion of communication culture.

Postcolonial Studies developed in a context of an anthropological turn in a modern humanities. When in the center of interests appeared problem of difference, otherness. Postcolonial critics read and deconstruct dominating attitudes and narrations towards others which are reflected in literature. Celem artykułu jest analiza współczesnego dyskursu humanistycznego w Polsce, w którym szczególną rolę odgrywają: kondycja postkolonialna, trzecia sofistyka i zaplecze ideologiczne systemu komunistycznego. Miękkie przejścia od „starych” tez marksistowskich do „współczesnego” relatywizmu i, szerzej, postmodernizmu było możliwe między innym dzięki recepcji amerykańskiego neopragmatyzmu, a zwłaszcza poglądów etycznych Stanleya Fisha i Richarda Rorty’ego. Narzędzi językowych pomocnych w opisie zrelatywizowanego świata dostarczyła trzecia sofistyka (czyli współczesna wersja pierwszej sofistyki greckiej reprezentowanej przez Gorgiasza, czy Protogorasa). Autorzy stawiają tezę, że dziedzictwo sowieckiego kolonializmu sprawiło, iż ponowoczesny dyskurs polski zasadza się na manipulacjach wywodzących się z czasów stalinizmu. Nowy system i nowa ideologia wykorzystują stare chwyty wciąż głęboko tkwiące w świadomości uczestników publicznej debaty w Polsce.
The aim of the article is an analysis of a contemporary humanistic Polish discourse in which three elements play specific roles: a postcolonial condition, the third sophistry and the ideological background of the communist system. A soft switch from “old” Marxist theses to “modern” relativism, and, in a broader sense, to postmodernism became possible inter alia due to the reception of American neopragmatism, especially Stanley Fish’s and Richard Rorty’s ethical views. The third sophistry (a modern version of the first sophistry represented by Gorgias and Protagoras) delivered helpful language tools for a description of the world which became relativistic. The authors of the article propose a thesis that the heritage of the Soviet colonialism resulted in such a version of postmodern Polish discourse that is based on manipulations dating back to Stalinism. The new system and new ideology have made use of the old tricks that are still deeply rooted in the mentality of the participants of the public debate in Poland.

The article analyzes differences in the description of discourse relations in corpus research, in particular with the reference to the use of discourse markers – expressions that tie together subsequent fragments of the text and provide information about the nature of these relations. The text presents three concepts of the description of explicitness and implicitness of the content: Rhetorical Structure Theory, Penn Discourse Treebank and the author’s original proposal and indicates the consequences of each solution. The analysis of relations with particles as metatexual expressions defined in accordance with The Nest Dictionary of Polish reveals the possibility of expressing explicitness as a representation of elements of informational structure shaped by the use of a given particle, and implicitness as a lack of representation of certain elements of this type.
W niniejszym artykule zostały poddane analizie różnice w opisie powiązań tekstowych (relacji dyskursywnych) w badaniach korpusowych, w szczególności w odniesieniu do kwestii użycia ustanawiających je markerów dyskursywnych – wyrażeń wiążących ze sobą kolejne fragmenty tekstu i niosących informacje o charakterze tych powiązań. Tekst przedstawia trzy koncepcje opisu eksplicytności i implicytności przekazu treści: Rhetorical Structure Theory, Penn Discourse Treebank i propozycję autorską oraz wskazuje konsekwencje poszczególnych rozwiązań. Analiza relacji z partykułami jako wyrażeniami metatekstowymi zdefiniowanymi zgodnie ze „Słownikiem gniazdowym partykuł polskich”, przeprowadzona na potrzeby korpusu polskiego ujawnia możliwość ujęcia eksplicytności jako obecności w tekście reprezentacji elementów struktury informacyjnej ukształtowanej przez użycie danej partykuły, a implicytności jako braku reprezentacji pewnych elementów tego typu.

W artykule zostają przybliżone argumenty nieomawianej dotychczas szerzej w polskich badaniach debaty metodologicznej toczonej w ramach współczesnych adaptation studies. Autor opisuje trzy tendencje charakterystyczne dla najnowszych teorii adaptacji: metateoretyczne próby przeramowania pojęcia adaptacji, krytykę podejścia typu medium specificity oraz otwieranie się na konteksty kulturowe, społeczne i ekonomiczne. Zdaniem autora jednym z największych wyzwań stojących przed studiami nad adaptacją jest przełamanie obowiązującego w obrębie dyscypliny podziału na badania tekstualne i kontekstualne (na który zwracała uwagę Kamilla Elliott). Kategorią, która może stanowić pomost między ujęciami formalistycznymi a kulturoznawczymi, jest pojęcie dyskursu, które nie było dotąd przedmiotem poważnej debaty w ramach dyscypliny. Posługując się przykładami polskich adaptacji z ostatnich lat, autor wskazuje na możliwe sposoby zastosowania tej kategorii w badaniach porównawczych.
The article presents the methodological debate in contemporary adaptation studies, which has not been discussed in greater detail in Polish research. The author describes three trends characteristic of the latest adaptation theories: metatheoretical attempts to reframe the notion of adaptation, criticism of medium-specificity approach, opening up to cultural, social and economic contexts. According to the author, one of the greatest challenges that adaptation studies faces is to overcome the discipline’s division into textual and contextual research (which was noticed by Kamilla Elliott). A category that could link formalistic and cultural approaches is, as the author argues, the category of discourse, which has not been the subject of a broader debate within the discipline so far. Referring to the examples of the latest Polish film adaptations, the author indicates possible ways of applying the concept of discourse in comparative studies.

Solche Forschungsgegenstände wie Diskurs bzw. Diskursivität, Medien bzw. Medialität und Multimodalität befi nden sich im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen sowohl von polnischen als auch von deutschsprachigen Sprachwissenschaft lern. Beobachtet man die Forschung in diesem Bereich, die in Polen und im deutschsprachigen Raum betrieben wird, werden Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede sichtbar. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass Vertreter der polnischen und der germanischen Forschungskultur zum Teil unterschiedliche Ansätze repräsentieren, sind Initiativen, die einen Dialog dieser beiden Forschungstraditionen ermöglichen, äußerst wichtig. Przyczynek do dialogu germanistyczno-polonistycznego“, die im Jahre 2022 von Waldemar Czachur, Anna Hanus und Dorota Miller herausgegeben wurde, verfolgt das Ziel, dem polnischen Leser einen Einblick in die Forschungsergebnisse der germanistischen Wissenschaft sgemeinschaft zu gewährleisten. Die Monographie besteht aus zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil ist der Diskurslinguistik gewidmet und enthält Übersetzungen von fünf Beiträgen deutscher Forscher. Der zweite Teil der Publikation, in dessen Fokus die Medienlinguistik rückt, umfasst Übersetzungen von vier Artikeln deutscher Wissenschaft ler ins Polnische. Die beiden Teile enthalten außerdem Gespräche mit deutschen und polnischen Sprach- und Medienwissenschaft lern, in denen die Problematik des Diskurses, des medialen Textes, der Multimodalität und der Medienlinguistik aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln diskutiert wird. Die beiden thematischen Sektionen der Anthologie schließen mit Beiträgen von Polonisten, in denen auf synthetische Art und Wiese die polnischsprachige und die germanistische Perspektive auf Diskurs und Medienlinguistik erörtert werden.
Research topics such as discourse or discursivity, media or mediality and multimodality are at the centre of studies by both Polish and German-speaking linguists. If one observes the research in this area conducted in Poland and in German-speaking countries, similarities and differences become apparent. Based on the assumption that representatives of the Polish and German research cultures partly represent different approaches, initiatives that enable a dialogue between these two research traditions are extremely important. Th e publication to be presented in the article „Dyskurs, media, multimodalność. Przyczynek do dialogu germanistyczno-polonistycznego“, which was published in 2022 by Waldemar Czachur, Anna Hanus and Dorota Miller, aims to provide Polish readers with an insight into the research findings of the German studies community. Th e monograph consists of two parts. Th e first part is devoted to discourse linguistics and contains translations of five articles by German researchers. Th e second part of the publication which focusses on media linguistics, includes translations of four articles by German researchers into Polish. The two parts also contain interviews with German and Polish linguists and media scholars, in which the problems of discourse, media texts, multimodality and media linguistics are discussed.

Adolf Hitler jest uznawany za jedną z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych postaci dwudziestego wieku ze względu na rolę jaką odegrał w utworzeniu ideologii i systemu politycznego kosztującego życie milionów osób. Mein Kampf jest swoistym zapisem tej filozofii, która nadal jest analizowana ze względu na swój wpływ na ówczesne niemieckie społeczeństwo, a także na niektóre współczesne grupy społeczne. Ustanie prawa autorskiego do Mein Kampf w 2016 roku rozbudziło debatę na temat ponownych publikacji zarówno w Niemczech, jak i za granicą. Nowe edycje stanowią interesujący temat do ideologicznej analizy motywów przyświecających tłumaczeniowym decydentom (tłumaczom, patronom, wydawcom i politykom), ponieważ są wśród nich zarówno publikacje otwarcie propagujące nazistowską ideologię, jak i tak zwane ‘edycje krytyczne’ mające na celu odwiedzenie czytelnika od pozytywnego nastawienia do zawartości książki. Obecna praca łączy teoretyczne paradygmaty przekładoznawstwa i krytycznej analizy dyskursu w celu zbadania ideologicznych wpływów oddziałujących na wybrane angielskie i polskie tłumaczenia Mein Kampf. Zintegrowany model teoretyczny metodą triangulacji bada elementy kontekstu i analizy tekstu w celu wyznaczenia ideologicznych motywacji stojących za poszczególnymi decyzjami tłumaczeniowymi. Korzystając z definicji dyskursu przedstawionej przez Teuna van Dijka, oprócz samego tłumaczonego tekstu, praca bierze pod uwagę również elementy graficzne i paratekstowe, które także zawierają ideologiczne manifestacje mające na celu wpłynięcie na sposób odbioru tłumaczenia przez czytelnika.
Adolf Hitler is considered as one of the most controversial figures in the 20th century due to his role in creating an ideology and a political system that caused death of millions of people. Mein Kampf is a written record of this philosophy. Almost a century after its publication, scholars still analyse the impact it had on contemporary German society, because of its emotional appeal that even now finds followers. The cessation of Hitler’s copyright held by the Bavarian government stirred the debate of the propriety of the republication of Mein Kampf both domestically and abroad. Given the lowering of legal constraints, new editions appeared causing hot debates in many countries. These translations serve as an interesting subject for ideological analysis because their final shape is an outcome of ideological power struggles of translation agents (translators, patrons, publishers, and politicians). Therefore, one can find publications that clearly propagate the Nazi ideology as well as so-called ‘critical editions’ which aim at dissuading the reader from any inclination towards the book’s content. This thesis combines the theoretical paradigms of Descriptive Translation Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the forces in play that exert influence on the selected English and Polish translation profiles of Mein Kampf. The integrated methodological framework triangulates contextual factors with the textual analysis to determine the ideological motivations behind the particular translational decisions. Following van Dijk’s understanding of discourse analysis, apart from the text proper, graphics and paratext are also taken into considerations.

Ekofeministyczne myślicielki, Carol J. Adams i Marti Kheel, rozwinęły teorie dotyczące relacji ludzkich i nieludzkich fenomenów, zbadały także zagadnienia seksualności i cielesności w kontekście zabijania i polowania na zwierzęta. Wszystkie te problemy są ważnymi motywami w twórczości Małgorzaty Lebdy.
Цель этой статьи – представить экофеминистскую теорию животного субъекта и его отсутствующего референтного объекта в книге Matecznik [Матечник] Малгожаты Лебды. Экофеминизм предоставляет инструменты для обширного анализа концептуальных отношений между женщинами (и небинарными людьми) и животными, а также может служить теоретической основой для экокритического исследования литературы. Мыслители-экофеминистки Кэрол Дж. Адамс и Марти Хил разработали теории о взаимосвязи между человеческими и нечеловеческими феменами и исследовали вопросы сексуальности и телесности в контексте убийства и охоты на животных. Все эти проблемы являются важными мотивами творчества Малгожаты Лебды.
Anouk Herman’s aim in this article is to introduce the ecofeminist theory of the animal subject and its absent referent in the poetry book Matecznik by Polish author Małgorzata Lebda. Ecofeminism provides tools for elaborate analysis of the conceptual connections between women (as well as persons of nonbinary identities) and animals and may be used as a theoretical background for ecocritical research on literature. Ecofeminist philosophers Carol J. Adams and Marti Kheel have developed theories regarding relationships of human and non-human phenomena. They examine the issues of sexuality and carnality in the context of the killing and hunting of animals, themes which constitute important motifs in Lebda’s poetry.

C.S. Lewis is known as Christian apologist and writer but his attitude toward women and feminism was not considered in Polish studies. Gender figures in his work may be considered as subordinated to patriarchal hierarchy and discourse of power. It is argued that his fiction has re-vealed stereotypical masculinity and femininity. One of This hideous strength characters, Jane Studock, must be „reeducated” because of her „modernity” and contraceptive use. According to patriarchal hierarchy she has to find her “obedience” as a wife. Gay/lesbian and feminist figures are satirized. Neil Gaiman gives creative reinterpretation of „problem of Susan”, heroine of The Chronicles of Narnia, who does not ascend to heaven with the other children because a girl achieving sexual maturity was an impossible phenomenon in Narnia’s imaginative world. The article gives also a glimpse into Lewis’ relationship with women: a difficult relationship with Mrs. Moore (mother or lover?) and his wife, Joy Davidman Gresham.

Opis:

This paper discusses the common lexical and grammatical features of legal discourse inEnglish and Arabic.6 The rationale behind this analysis is to compare and contrast the discourse ofboth languages, list the similarities and differences between them and come up with the mostproblematic areas in legal translation. It is worth mentioning that features of Arabic legal discoursehave not been researched before, thus, I have taken the features of legal English as headlightsaccording to which I will analyze the corpus of Arabic legal documents. These features, however,are not specific to one particular type of written language of the law. By type of language is meantthe different types of legal texts such as legislations, contracts, official documents, courtproceedings, etc. For this purpose, authentic samples of different English and Arabic legaldocuments have been consulted. These texts, obtained from law professionals, include private legaldocuments such as tenancy agreements, employment contracts, correspondences between solicitorsand clients, reports to the court, birth certificates, and marriage certificates. Other documentsinclude selected legislative and international documents. To this effect, the United Nations (UN)website, other translation books such as Mansoor (1965), Hatim, Shunnaq and Buckley (1995) areconsulted.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie typowych leksykalnych i składniowych cech dyskursu prawnego w języku arabskim i angielskim. Cechy strylistyczne nie zostały uwzględnione w pracy. Autorka sokonuje anlizy porównawczo-kontrastywnej dyskursy prawniczego w obu analizowanych językach. W wyniku przeprowadznonej analizy zostaje opracowana list najbardziej kłopotliwych obszrów w przekładzie w ramach tej pary językowej. Należy tutaj podkreślić, że cechy prawniczego dyskursu w języku arabskim nie były do tej pory badane i z tego powodu za punkt wyjścia posłużyły szerzej opisane w literaturze cechy prawniczego języka angielskiego. Autorka zanalizowała autentyczne teksty z różnych gatunków obejmujące: umowy najmu/dzierżawy, umowy o pracę, korespondencję pomiędzy prawnikami i klientami, raporty przygotowywane na potzreby sądów, akty urodzenia i małżeństwa, a także wybrane dokumenty z zakreu prawa międzynarodowego.

The author presents the proceedings used by the linguists involved in the media research highlights dominant approaches, distinguishes two hypothetical ones: hegemonic and sovereign, and discusses challenges related to both of them. Hegemonic approach in the media research means the a distinctly defined subject of the study, that is the language of the media, precisely defined subject of analysis, namely the language of the media, and a supremacy of linguistic methods used in the analysis. The linguist as a sovereign prefers an open attitude towards methods applied in the study. Such an approach considers achievements of the media scholarshop as well as other related scientific disciplines. This attitude in the media research means that the linguist analyzes an image of the world in the media, a stylistic differentiation of the media communication, media genres, and the discourse. Furthermore, the linguist as a sovereign claims creating a new linguistic discipline and widens the research field with contrastive issues.

Klasyczne koncepcje tłumaczące powstawanie wartości i norm społecznych odwołują się do mechanizmów, które wpływają korzystnie na rozwój społeczności ludzkich. Jak jednak można wytłumaczyć pojawianie się norm moralnych w stosunku do przedstawicieli innych gatunków? W wymiarze teoretycznym zasadniczą ideą artykułu jest rozszerzenie katalogu sposobów powstawania norm (według klasyfikacji Hansa Joasa). W artykule postanowiono przyjrzeć się strategiom konstruowania praw zwierząt w dyskursie prozwierzęcym za pomocą analizy struktury i treści wypowiedzi. Materiał do analizy zaczerpnięty został z kampanii „Zostań Wege na 30 dni”, zachęcającej do wypróbowania diety roślinnej. W wyniku analiz zidentyfikowano cztery kluczowe strategie mające zmienić stosunek do gatunków pozaludzkich: a) redefinicję statusu zwierząt, b) redefinicję działań człowieka, c) redefinicję jedzenia zwierząt oraz d) sygnalizowanie pozytywnych konsekwencji realizacji praw zwierząt.
Classical explanations of the genesis of social values and norms refer to mechanisms that more or less directly facilitate the development of human societies. However, the explanation of moral norms pertaining to other species remains a riddle. The main theoretical idea of the article is to extend the catalog of ways in which norms emerge (according to Hans Joas’ classification). The article investigates the strategies of animal rights construction within pro-animal discourse using the techniques of structure and content analysis. The analyzed material was derived from the ‘Become Vegan/Vegetarian for 30 Days’ social campaign, whose main goal has been to motivate people to give a plant-based diet a try. Based on the analysis, four main strategies of attitude-change towards non-human species have been identified: a) the redefinition of animal status; b) the redefinition of human action; c) the redefinition of eating animals; and d) the signaling of positive consequences of animal rights implementation.

W artykule analizowany jest serial Netflix „Fauda” (sezon 1). Analiza jest prowadzona zgodnie metodologią Krytycznej Analizy Dyskursu (CDA) w ujęciu głównych jej zwolenników, takich jak Ruth Wodak i inni. Kluczowym czynnikiem, mającym wpływ na wyniki analizy, jest kontekst polityczny autorów serii, którzy byli żołnierzami izraelskimi i przy tworzeniu kolejnych odcinków opierają się na osobistych doświadczeniach. Ta podwójna złożoność ma dalsze konsekwencje w analizie. W wyniku wnikliwej prezentacji została przedstawiona lista głównych toposów organizujących dyskurs palestyński, a później ta lista została skonfrontowana z rzeczywistością palestyńską i oceniono jej wiarygodność.
In this paper Netflix series “Fauda” (season 1) is analyzed in accordance to the Critical Discourse Analysis and its main advocates like Ruth Wodak and others. The crucial factor influencing this research is political context of the authors of the series who used to be Israeli soldiers and they rely on their personal experience while creating episodes. This double complexity has its further implications in the analysis. As the result of the investigation there was presented the list of main topoi organizing Palestinian discourse and later, this list was confronted with Palestinian reality and her credibility was assessed.

This works shows the development and the specific features of the Polish language stylistic research, as well as the most important qualities of the aforementioned publications. This article is a review of the book 'Identity discourse of Ukraine after the Revolution of Dignity through the prism of the language issue' by Nadia Gergalo-Dabek. In the book under review, the author tackles the difficult language issue in Ukraine and its relation to the politics and society of the country. She starts from a theoretical approach concerning the issues of identity and nation in terms of contemporary social sciences and humanities, based on the notion of discourse and discursive narrative construction. Further on, the author addresses the areas of interpenetration of identity discourse concerning the language issue with politics and the public sphere in Ukraine. She also touches upon the issues of language change in the social sphere citing research and statistics. The work is an interesting and valuable item on the publishing market, especially for those interested in the issues discussed.

Many studies of postcolonial translation feature analyses of translational and publishing decisions and their potential influences on the relationships between the colonizers and the colonized (e.g. Jacquemond 1992, Spivak 2009, Tymoczko 1999). This article proposes a different methodology, focusing instead on the presence of translated postcolonial literature in Poland through a systematic, discursive study of its reception. Based on the results of an unpublished doctoral study (Gołuch 2013) – which analysed nearly a thousand Polish reviews discussing African, Indian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern writing and published between 1970 and 2010 – the article demonstrates that Polish reviewers increasingly often affirm Polish-postcolonial similarities, even if Orientalist othering discourses remain present in the reviews. This finding contributes to timely debates about Polish self-perceptions. Emphasising otherness or exoticism of postcolonial texts and contexts, the reviewers tend to write from the position of Europeans and identify with Orientalist biases. Yet, the emerging discourse comparing postcolonial experiences of migration, independence struggle and post-independence complexes with Poland’s own past and present offers an interesting counterbalance to a long-standing tradition of othering perceptions. Focusing on specific similarities, some reviewers seem to think of Poland and themselves in postcolonial terms. Furthermore, the article contributes to scholarship on Polish postcolonialism. Numerous incisive studies examined the Partitions of Poland (1795–1918), Nazi occupation (1939–1945) and Soviet domination (1945–89) in terms of colonisation, at the same time employing postcolonial tools to revisit issues of Polish domination over Belarusians, Lithuanians and Ukrainians, as well as Polish attitudes to non-European colonised peoples (e.g. Bakuła 2006, Buchholtz 2009, Cavanagh 2003, Fiut 2003, Gosk 2010, Janion 2006, Kłobucka 2001, Kołodziejczyk 2010, Skórczewski 2013, Thompson 2000, Wojda 2015). Notably, the themes of Poland’s status as a colonised and colonising country within the immediate region, on the one hand, and Polish perceptions of non-European postcolonial peoples, on the other, tend to be explored separately (cf. Wojda 2015). This article, however, suggests that a Polish postcolonial self-image might be emerging in response to an encounter with translated postcolonial writing and generally argues for bringing the two thematic strands together to explore further the interdependencies between Poland’s postcolonialism and Polish attitudes to non-European postcolonials.

Uchwytny jest on głównie w przestrzeni tekstów literackich generowanych przez mniejszości, pełniących przede wszystkim funkcję reprezentacyjną i performatywną. Uruchomienie mocy dyskursywnej literatur mniejszościowych, nadajacej im rangę głosu, wiedzy, podmiotu, Innego, możliwe jest za pomocą pewnych figur tekstualnych skonceptualizowanych m.in. w studiach postkolonialnych czy imagologii. Posługując się metodą symptomatycznego czytania tekstów, wskazuję możliwości dotknięcia zmarginalizowania działającego jako konstrukt tożsamościowy, ideowa opozycja, nicowanie struktur dominacyjnych, parodia i ironia. Postuluję ideę humanistyki zaangażowanej.
In this text I am trying to generate motivation space for the introduction of ethnical research (including minority policy) of those textual areas which I described as minority discourse. It is perceptible mainly in the area of literary texts generated by minorities, playing mostlythe representative and performative role. The use of the discoursive power of minority literatures, which grants it the rank of a voice, | Helena Duć-Fajfer | 120 a subject, the Other, is possible by means of some textual figures, conceptualized [m.in.] in post-colonial studies or imagology. Using the method of symptomatic reading, I indicate opportunities to touch the marginalization, which acts as identity construct, idea opposition, turning the structures of domination, parody and irony. I am calling for the idea of engaged humanities.

Researchers concentrating on the media discourse observe the need to approach translated press texts from the critical perspective, also taking into consideration their status and criteria of reliable evaluation. From the point of view of the specificity and degree of translation difficulty, these texts seem interesting and difficult due to linguistic factors. Besides, they are generally diverse and, in the translation process, they may undergo significant changes (not necessarily because of the translator’s interpretation). However, they are infrequently subjected to critical evaluation, being placed on the peripheries of translation studies. The difficulties which researchers investigating the press discourse must (or would have to) face are therefore considerable. Like translators, researchers encounter problems of message condensation (imposed by editors), the media reality presented in the text and the points of view. Researchers must also analyze the function of the translated text, taking into consideration the reader’s perspective, which, as a rule, governs the translator’s decisions. Researchers should also assess the aesthetic values of the text, taking into account its multimodality. All these issues are discussed on the basis of Polish translations of Russian press texts. The case study of selected texts and their translations illustrates problems resulting from the lack of clearly established criteria for translation criticism and the rapid ageing of information contained in press texts. Translation criticism facilitates reflection on the quality and value of translated press texts and appreciation of rendering meanings.

Opis:

The article combines methods pertaining to Rhetorical Genre Studies and Discourse-Historical Approach in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of Krzysztof Bosak’s nomination acceptance speech which he delivered during the 2020 Confederation presidential primaries. The discussed genre of political speech is rarely realized in European contexts. Given various differences between the American and the Polish political systems, Bosak did not follow every pattern of the standard variant of the genre. Rather his speech appears to be more similar to a nomination acceptance speech of a third-party candidate. Overall, Bosak emerged as the leader of a divided and heterogeneous party, which was not given much attention by mainstream media. The paper investigates how these factors contributed to the structure and content of the speech. Moreover, recent decades have seen a rapid rise in significance of (far) right-wing movements in Europe. As Confederation is a relatively new political formation, there is a gap in research regarding the properties of its discourse. Thus, the present paper compares the discourse of the coalition with practices of politics of fear (Wodak, 2021).
Artykuł łączy metody z zakresu retorycznych studiów gatunkowych oraz podejścia dyskursywno-historycznego w celu przeprowadzenia kompleksowej analizy przemówienia Krzysztofa Bosaka, wygłoszonego podczas prawyborów prezydenckich Konfederacji w 2020 r. Omawiany gatunek jest rzadko realizowany w kontekście europejskim. Biorąc pod uwagę różnice między amerykańskim i polskim systemem politycznym, Bosak nie zastosował się do wszystkich wzorców standardowej odmiany tego gatunku. Jego przemówienie wydaje się raczej przypominać mowę akceptacyjną wygłaszaną przez kandydata reprezentującego pomniejsze formacje (third-parties). Zasadniczo Bosak przyjął rolę lidera podzielonej i niejednorodnej partii, której media głównego nurtu nie poświęciły zbyt wiele uwagi. W artykule zbadano, w jaki sposób czynniki te wpłynęły na strukturę i treść przemówienia. Co więcej, w ostatnich dekadach w Europie nastąpił gwałtowny wzrost znaczenia ruchów (skrajnie) prawicowych, do których można zaliczyć także Konfederację. W artykule porównano dyskurs tej stosunkowo nowej formacji politycznej z retoryką polityki strachu (Wodak, 2021).

Women’s press in the Pomeranian publishing market in the interwar period constituted a new, or even experimental, phenomenon. Local editorial o¢ ces quickly noticed the opportunities women’s press provided. By the end of the 1920s there had been issued eight titles of women’s press – all in the forms of supplements. The next decade brought another five titles – including two independent periodicals. Women’s press supplements were issued by the press bodies of all the most important political parties in the province: „Gazeta Grudziądzka” („Dobra Gospodyni”), „Słowo Pomorskie” („Dom Rodzinny”), „Dzień Pomorski” („Women’s Movement in Pomerania”). The analysis of the content of the supplements and women’s magazines issued in the Pomeranian Province showed that they could be divided into three types: presenting a woman as a housewife, a quasi-modern woman, and an active woman. The types frequently overlapped each other. The Pomeranian press for women did not differ greatly from the titles issued in other regions of Poland. It continued to view a woman as a mother, wife and caretaker of hearth and home.

Tekst ma na celu przedstawienie językowego obrazu naukowca przede wszystkim na podstawie opinii przedstawicieli środowiska akademickiego – pracowników naukowych i studentów, jak również nauczycieli i pracowników administracyjnych szkoły podstawowej. Nawiązano także do badań typu DAST związanych z pre¬zentacją aspektów wizualnych danego zjawiska przy pomocy rysunku. W gronie osób badanych znalazły się dzieci w wieku szkolnym. Zaprezentowano aktualny stan badań nad omawianym zjawi-skiem. Przedmiotem przedstawionego w tekście bada¬nia była ocena dwóch aspektów. Po pierwsze, na ile w świadomości społecznej odczuwalny/zauważalny jest problem zjawiska nierów-norzędnej reprezentacji płci w języku, apo drugie, jak ocenia się poprawność nazw zawodów i tytułów stanowiących żeński ekwiwalent generycznej formy męskiej. Respondenci zostali poproszeni o wyrażenie opinii o formach/zwrotach adresatywnych stosowanych w odniesieniu do zróżnicowanych płciowo grup osób. Wyniki uzyskane dzięki analizie odpowie¬dzi ankietowanych posłużyły przedstawieniu świadomości językowej w zakresie nacechowania genderowego nominatów leksykalnych. Uzyskane dane pomogły opisać wizerunek współczesnego naukowca w oczach badanych. Opracowany materiał badawczy dotyczy przede wszystkim dyskursu polskich uczelni wyższych. Dokonano wnikliwego porównania wybranych aspektów wizerunku pracownika naukowego w perspektywie polskiej. Przeanalizowano genderowe aspekty tego zagadnienia.
This text is aimed at defining linguistic image of a scientist on the basis of opinions of members of academic environment – scientists and students, as well as teachers and office workers of the primary school. It has been elaborated on the issue of DAST research, which is a research method aiming at presentation of visual aspects of given phenomenon by means of drawings. The research group consisted of students aged between six and eleven. Moreover current state of research on the issue has been touched upon. The subject of the presented research is evaluation of two issues. First, to what extent the problem of lack of gender equality is noticeable among the members of the research group. Second, how the correctness of feminine names of occupations and titles is perceived. The members of research group have been asked to evaluate forms of address that refer to men and women. The outcome of the research enables presentation of linguistic awareness of gendered names. Moreover it enables description of modern scientist image features. The research concerns mainly Polish universities. What is more, selected features of Polish scientists. Gender features are taken into account in the proces of analysis.

The article applies postcolonial approaches to economic discourses in regard to Habsburg Galicia at the turn of the 19th century, focusing on the reform discourses of the state bureaucracy, the Galician landlords and the national movement with regard to serfdom and agrarian reform. Making use of Said’s concept of “orientalism”, the article’s main section is dedicated to the analysis of how the definition and construction of peasants as social actors influenced reforms of serfdom until it was finally abolished in course of the revolution of 1848. Here, several different simultaneous narratives, as well as varying positions in the course of time can be observed, where cultural differences were overlapping with social cleavages. Thus, a polycentric, but not polyvalent approach of power and rule could help deconstructing or at least questioning binary dichotomies, in the way that hegemony is always dependent on a complex web of political, social and economic relations in a spatial context.

The article is dedicated to the changes in the concepts of Polish studies and in educational practice. The first part of the text basically indicates these contemporary culture phenomena which indirectly and directly affect teaching. The phenomenon of "accelerated aging of experience", described by O. Marquard, and its consequences for education are particularly emphasized. The second part of the article features a synthetic description of the processes and transformation directions which have influenced educational thought and practice since the 19th century. Four sets of issues are taken into account: linguistic education, literary education, heterogeneity of the contents of Polish language tuition, as well as the role of the Polish language teacher. The conclusions focus on the issue of subjectivity, individuality and causativity source of the teacher’s action.
Artykuł poświęcony jest zmianom w koncepcjach polonistycznego kształcenia oraz w praktyce edukacyjnej. Pierwsza część tekstu zasadniczo poświęcona została wskazaniu tych zjawisk we współczesnej kulturze, które mają pośredni i bezpośredni wpływ na nauczanie. Szczególnie podkreślono - opisane przez O. Marquarda - zjawisko "przyspieszonego starzenia się doświadczenia" i wynikające z niego konsekwencje dla edukacji. Druga część artykułu przynosi syntetyczny opis procesów oraz kierunków przemian, którym od XIX w podlegała myśl i praktyka edukacyjna. Pod uwagę zostały wzięte cztery kompleksy zagadnień: kształcenie językowe, kształcenie literackie, heterogeniczność treści nauczania na języku polskim, wreszcie: rola nauczyciela polonisty. We wnioskach podniesiono wagę podmiotowości i sprawczości działań nauczyciela.

Artykuł naświetla różne podejścia badawcze w kwestii badań nad Kozaczyzną, metodologię, wykorzystywaną przy analizie obiektu badawczego w ośrodkach naukowych Ukrainy, Rosji, Kazachstanu i Polski. Ów obiekt badawczy był traktowany niejednoznacznie z racji swej tradycyjnej specyfiki społeczności transgranicznej, opartej na demokracji militarnej. W związku z powyższym Kozaczyzna była postrzegana zarówno jako oddzielny naród, grupa etniczna, orda azjatycka bądź też rosyjska lub ukraińska zmilitaryzowana warstwa społeczna. W ukraińskim dyskursie naukowym Kozacy byli tradycyjnie postrzegani jako warstwa państwotwórcza, w przeciwieństwie do rosyjskiej szkoły badawczej, często traktującej Kozactwo jako lokalne siły zbrojne albo burzycieli tradycyjnego porządku. Natomiast w polskiej nauce Kozaczyzna tradycyjnie była wplatana w polską perspektywę historyczną. Zdaniem autorki porównanie różnych podejść badawczych pomoże w wypracowaniu całościowego nurtu badawczego i metodologii kozakoznawstwa.
The article presents various methodological approaches to the Cossacks Studies with a special focus on the past and present academic discourses and practices in Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Kazakhstan and Poland. Images of Cossack armies provide an interesting but hybrid research material, because these military groups represent both the identity of the border communities and the military democratic society. Hence the exceptionally varied ways of viewing their identity in which this group has been seen as a nation, ethnic group, Asian Orda or Russian//Ukrainian military nobility. In contemporary Ukrainian science, the Cossacks have been perceived as a leading force behind the nation-building process, while for the Russian researchers, they have been depicted as local insurgents. In Polish science and discourse, the Cossacks are analyzed strictly from the Polish historical perspective. The article suggests that those diversified approaches to the Cossack identity and history may help formulating a comprehensive and universal discourse and methodology for the Cossacks Studies.

Such a possibility is ensured by the syndromized understanding of populism and by taking into account its manifestations on different levels of political discourse, including linguistic exponents, sender-recipient relations and a specific image of the world created within the framework of this discourse. The application of cognitive methodology in studies offers one of many research perspectives allowing populist discourse to be characterized from an interdisciplinary perspective, including a political-linguistic approach.
Populizm, zwłaszcza w sferze polityki stanowi polidyscyplinarny problem badawczy, występuje bowiem nie tylko w naukach społecznych, lecz również językoznawstwie. Jego wieloaspektowy ogląd wpływa na niejednoznaczność semantyczną, brak jednej definicji. Jej ustalenie staje się kluczowe dla badań interdyscyplinarnych, gdyż pozwoli określić zakres badanego zjawiska. Taką możliwość daje syndromatyczne rozumienie populizmu oraz zwrócenie uwagi na jego przejawianie się na różnych poziomach dyskursu politycznego, obejmującym zarówno wykładniki językowe, jak i relacje nadawczo-odbiorcze czy kreowaną w obrębie tego dyskursu specyficzną wizją świata. Przyjęcie zatem w badaniach metodologii kognitywnej stanowi jedną z perspektyw badawczych pozwalających na charakterystykę dyskursu populistycznego, dającą możliwość spojrzenia interdyscyplinarnego, w tym politolingwistycznego.

W części 1. artykułu zdefiniowano pojęcia: wspólnoty dyskursywnej oraz wspólnoty dyskursywnej glottodydaktyków polonistycznych. Zwrócono uwagę na cele i mechanizmy komunikacji wewnątrz tej grupy, środki przekazu (gatunki mowy), rytuały związane z przyjmowaniem i wykluczaniem członków tej wspólnoty. W części 2. wyrażono opinię, że czasopismo naukowe jest narzędziem spajającym dyskursywną wspólnotę naukową (akademicką), stymulującym jej rozwój. Proces krzepnięcia glottodydaktycznej wspólnoty dyskursywnej zilustrowano, ukazując dyskurs naukowy toczący się na łamach „Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Kształcenia Polonistycznego Cudzoziemców”, najstarszego w Polsce forum naukowego, podejmującego zagadnienia nauczania jpjo.
In the first part of the article, the author defines discourse community and characterizes the discourse community of teachers of Polish as a foreign language. She considers the goals and communication mechanisms within this group, the means of communication (speech genres) and the rituals of including and excluding the community members. In the second part of the art icle, the author expressed the opinion that a scientific periodical is a tool which unites the scientific (academic) community and stimulates its development. She illustrates the process of shaping the discourse community of teachers of Polish as a foreign language with scientific discourse in „Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Studies in Teaching Polish to Foreigners”.

The paper discusses an unknown diary, written in Polish by a Polish noblewoman, PelagiaRościszewska, between 1819 and 1856, as a rare instance of female autobiographical diurnal writing in Kiev Governorate – the land taken away from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and incorporated into Russia. Bringing the insights of book studies and drawing from the analysis of the material aspect of the diary’s manuscript, the author outlines the possibility of reading this text as a specimen of Polish national identity discourse under Russian imperial rule.

Vesna Goldsworthy once stated that interest in the Balkans lasts as long as there are conflicts in the area. Furthermore, that interest is extremely superficial. Europeans prefer to fit inhabitants of the Balkans into lasting ‘popular’ stereotypes (clichés) rather than to become acquainted with them. On the one hand, the Balkan region is viewed as being the proverbial powder keg, an area suffering from the ‘eternal’ hatred of the nations inhabiting it and stained with the blood of their fratricidal strife; at the very least the region is a synonym of extreme retrogression and obscurantism, from which only European paternalism can save it. On the other hand—the brighter picture—the region is viewed almost like a ludic open-air folk museum, as in the films of Emir Kusturica. Those who are more inclined to hold the first view dream of the Balkans’ escape to ‘EU-rope’; the latter do not in principle oppose remaining in this idyllic land ‘flowing with rakia’. The aim of the article is to analyze the discourse concerning the Balkans in two dimensions of social life—politics and art.

W porównaniu z rosnącym na całym świecie zainteresowaniem żywnością i sposobami odżywiania się, zarówno w kulturze masowej, jak i w badaniach naukowych, tradycja tzw. Food Studies w polskiej lingwistyce jest stosunkowo krótka i mało ugruntowana, zwłaszcza w językoznawstwie diachronicznym. Artykuł przedstawia stan badań historyczno-językowych nad kulturą kulinarną w Polsce w ujęciu porównawczym i stanowi próbę klasyfikacji i uporządkowania polskich prac na tle różnorodnych badań międzynarodowych. Artykuł przedstawia prace z zakresu lingwistyki strukturalnej i historyczno-porównawczej oraz zawiera sugestie dotyczące badań interdyscyplinarnych. Oprócz podejść lingwistyki antropologicznej przedstawiono również nowe możliwości badania dawnej kultury kulinarnej Polski za pomocą integrującego programu badawczego zaproponowanego przez lingwistyczną analizę dyskursu.
Im Vergleich zum weltweit wachsenden Interesse an Nahrungsmitteln und Ernährungsweisen sowohl in der Massenkultur als auch in der akademischen Forschung ist die Tradition der so genannten Food Studies in der polnischen Sprachwissenschaft relativ kurz und wenig etabliert, insbesondere in der diachronen Sprachwissenschaft. Der Beitrag stellt den Stand der historisch-linguistischen Forschung zur kulinarischen Kultur in Polen im Vergleich dar und ist ein Versuch der Klassifizierung und Einordnung polnischer Arbeiten vor dem Hintergrund der vielfältigen internationalen Forschung. Der Artikel stellt Arbeiten aus dem Gebiet der strukturellen und historisch-vergleichenden Linguistik vor und gibt Anregungen zur interdisziplinären Forschung. Neben den Ansätzen der anthropologischen Linguistik werden auch neue Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten der altpolnischen kulinarischen Kultur mit Hilfe eines von der linguistischen Diskursanalyse vorgeschlagenen integrativen Forschungsprogramms präsentiert.

Praca służyła realizacji dwóch zasadniczych celów; pierwszym była ocena aktualnościi przydatności medioznawczych konstrukcji teoretycznych w komparatystycznej, jakościowej analizie zawartości prasy. Teoretyczna część pracy polegała w dużej mierze na przeglądziei selekcji modeli funkcjonowania mediów proponowanych przez Andrew Heywooda oraz Tomasza Gobana-Klasa. Drugim założonym celem było zilustrowanie możliwości przedstawienia rzeczywistości w diametralnie różne sposoby, o odmiennym zabarwieniu polityczno-ideologicznym. Realizacji tego celu służyła empiryczna część pracy – jakościowa analiza porównawcza artykułów dotyczących (zaplanowanych na maj) wyborów na prezydenta RP publikowanych w „Gazecie Wyborczej” oraz „Gazecie Polskiej Codziennie”.
This thesis had two essential goals to achieve. First one was verifying how actual and useful are the ideas and models presented in scientific works concerning mass media when it comes to a comparative analysis of newspapers’ content. This goal was meant to be achieved by an overview of Andrew Heywood’s and Thomas Goban-Klas’ theoretical models in media studies. The second goal was to portrait several completely different ways of presenting reality in newspapers, influenced by publishers’ political or ideological views. The empirical part of the thesis served as a mean of achieving this goal – author ran the qualitative, comparative analysis of the articles referring to the presidential elections which were published in “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Gazeta Polska Codziennie”.

Tekst prezentuje jedną z propozycji teoretycznych ugruntowanych w materiale z nieanonimowych autobiograficznych wywiadów narracyjnych z uznanymi polskimi artystami sztuk wizualnych. Przedstawiona koncepcja rykoszetów upodmiotowienia nazywa szczególną strukturę procesową odnalezioną w wywiadach i krytycznie rozwija popularną metaforę trajektorii. Charakteryzuje proces wypracowywania przez artystów osobnego projektu życiowo-twórczego na tle twórczości mistrzów, działań współczesnych konkurentów, dawnych nurtów dyskursu sztuki nowoczesnej, jak i aktualnej struktury pozycji w lokalnym polu sztuki. W tekście zostały bliżej omówione fragmenty wywiadu z polską rzeźbiarką, performerką oraz autorką instalacji i filmów wideo Katarzyną Kozyrą, które najsilniej zainspirowały opisywaną koncepcję. Forma literacka głównej części tekstu jest próbą szukania sposobu na uprawianie socjografii – snucie opowieści przedstawiającej, idiograficznej, ale będącej zarazem efektem pracy analitycznej i teoretycznej.
The paper presents a theoretical proposal grounded in the material of non-anonymous autobiographical narrative interviews with renowned Polish visual artists. The concept of ricochets of subjectivation names a particular process structure found in the interviews. It also critically modifies the metaphor of trajectory, popular in sociology. The concept characterises the process of developing an idiosyncratic life and creative project of the artist, against the backdrop of the former achievements of the modern art discourse, including works of the masters, as well as the structure of the positions in the local art field and the work of contemporary competitors. The paper discusses in more detail fragments of an interview with the Polish sculptor, video artist and performer Katarzyna Kozyra, which most significantly inspired the concept described. The literary form of the main part of the text seeks to search for new ways of doing sociography. That is, weaving a story, that is at the same time an idiographic representation, and a result of analytical and theoretical work.

Opis:

The article is devoted to the analysis of broadly understood twentieth-century russica appearing in Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s Journals. Individual russica were combined into thematic blocks that cover such spheres of cultural reality as literary life, literary studies, the times of the thaw, the condition of a writer in the Soviet Union, and Ilya Erenburg’s reception of specific Russian writers (Ilya Erenburg, Konstantin Paustowski, Andrei Vozniesienski, Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova, Bella Akhmadulina). The basic phenomena are considered through the lens of cultural comparative studies, which assume that the research object is embedded in specific historical, political and aesthetic realities. The presence of the figure of the diarist clearly outlined in the Diaries allows us to look at the discussed problems not from an “isolating” encyclopaedic perspective, but from a personal perspective, enriched with an emotional layer. This approach is additionally supported by the selection of para-literary materials – i.e. diaries and ephemeral texts.

W artykule podjęta została próba szerokiego oglądu procesów zachodzą- cych w łemkoznawstwie w XXI w. pod kątem odnotowania najistotniej- szych zmian w stosunku do stanu z końca XX w. Ma on formę refleksji na bazie formułowanych opinii, u podłoża których leżą obserwowane fakty wydawnicze i projektowe. Sprowadzają się one do odnotowania czterech głównych tendencji. 1. Pojawienie się „masowej produkcji” tekstów mało oryginalnych, ze słabym warsztatem badawczym, „przepisujących” stały repertuar informacji o Łemkach, w niektórych przypadkach wręcz plagia- tów. 2. Zacieranie różnicy między tekstem naukowym a popularnym czy popularnonaukowym. Na to zjawisko ma wpływ zarówno obniżenie się ja- kości prac akademickich, jak i ambicje wydawnicze określonych organizacji społecznych czy lokalnych wydawnictw, które nie są w stanie sprostać wy- mogom publikacji naukowej. 3. Kontynuowanie, choć w nieco zmienionej formie, upolitycznionych wydań z tezą ideologiczną. Charakter zmiany po- lega na zauważalnej i komunikowanej w tych pracach „obronie zagrożonej twierdzy”. Głównym wydawcą takich prac o Łemkach są instytucje w Ukra- inie, ale i w Polsce czy na Słowacji można natrafić na ten typ publikacji. Tu jednak częściej spotyka się bardziej zakamuflowaną formę przemycania tezy ideologicznej. 4. Rozwój łemkoznawstwa wewnętrznego, uwzględ- niającego perspektywę łemkocentryczną, generującego sporo publikacji łemkowskojęzycznych. Przestrzenią dla rozwoju i prezentowania tego typu badań jest „Rocznik Ruskiej Bursy” oraz Centrum Zaangażowanych Badań nad Ciągłością Kulturową przy Wydziale „Artes Liberales” Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Ta perspektywa jest też obecna w badaniach i publikacjach odrębnych badaczy. W podsumowaniu określona została pozycja badawcza autorki lokująca ją w symptomatyczny sposób wobec obserwowanych zja- wisk i mająca wpływ na formułowane opinie.
The article attempts to broadly examine the processes occurring in Lemko studies in the 21st century, focusing on the most significant changes com- pared to the state of the field at the end of the 20th century. It is presented as a reflection based on formulated opinions grounded in observed publishing and project-related facts. These observations highlight four main tenden- cies. 1. The emergence of “mass production” of less original texts with weak research methodology, often “copying” a fixed repertoire of information about the Lemkos, and in some cases bordering on outright plagiarism. 2. The blurring of the line between academic and popular or popular-scien- tific texts. This phenomenon is influenced by both a decline in the quality of academic works and the publishing ambitions of certain social organiza- tions or local publishers, which are unable to meet the standards of scien- tific publications. 3. The continuation of ideologically driven publications, although in a somewhat altered form. The publication of politically charged works with ideological theses persists, with the change involving a notice- able “defense of a threatened fortress,” as communicated in these publi- cations. Institutions in Ukraine are the primary publishers of such works about the Lemkos, but similar publications can also be found in Poland and Slovakia. However, in these cases, the ideological theses are often conveyed in a more covert manner. 4. The development of internal Lemko studies, which involves adopting a Lemko-centric perspective and has resulted in numerous publications in the Lemko language. Spaces for developing and presenting this type of research include the Richnyk Ruskoi Bursŷ and the Center for Engaged Research on Cultural Continuity at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw. This perspective is also evident in the research and publications of individual scholars. In the conclusion, the author’s research position is defined in a way that symptomatically reflects the observed phenomena and influences the formulated opinions.

La cuisine que les auteurs du volume font passer par le filtre des mots appartenant majoritairement aux langues romanes y est étudiée à chaque fois de manière méthodique avec des approches diverses et, en fin de compte, complémentaires. Une telle complémentarité pas seulement thématique devient manifeste déjà au niveau de la structure du volume que forment les sept parties. Toutes groupées autour de la culture culinaire – où coexistent pacifiquement arts, vocabulaires, dictionnaires, mais aussi goûts, recettes, usages – elles proposent une perspective variée.

This monograph analyzes the scholarly work (skovoroda studies) published in Poland during the interwar period (1918–1939). The work examines the development of discourse surrounding Hryhorij Skovoroda, a Ukrainian philosopher and poet, in the context of efforts to rebuild Ukrainian statehood, modernize national culture, and consolidate émigré communities. The historical analysis is based on concepts of national discourse, generational discourse, and cultural memory. The text demonstrates how the perception of Skovoroda evolved within the context of émigré academic institutions (including those in Warsaw, Prague, and Berlin). The research focuses on the coexistence of traditional national approaches, which sought to incorporate the philosopher into the national pantheon, and modern historiographical concepts. A key achievement of this period was situating Skovoroda's thought within the broad context of European mystical philosophy of the 17th and 18th centuries, which was fundamental to the legitimization of Ukrainian culture as an integral part of European heritage. This breakthrough is primarily attributed to the work of Dmytro Čyževs’kyj from the 1930s. An integral part of the monograph is an anthology and a complete bibliography of interwar works on Skovoroda studies.
Monografia stanowi analizę dorobku naukowego (skoworodoznawstwa) opublikowanego w Polsce w okresie międzywojennym (1918–1939). Praca bada kształtowanie się dyskursu wokół postaci Hryhorija Skoworody, ukraińskiego filozofa i poety, w kontekście dążeń do odbudowy ukraińskiej państwowości, modernizacji kultury narodowej oraz konsolidacji środowisk emigracyjnych. Analiza historyczna opiera się na koncepcjach dyskursu narodowego, pokoleniowego oraz pamięci kulturowej. Tekst ukazuje, jak postrzeganie Skoworody ewoluowało w warunkach emigracyjnych instytucji naukowych (m.in. w Warszawie, Pradze i Berlinie). Badania koncentrują się na współistnieniu tradycyjnych ujęć narodnickich, dążących do włączenia filozofa do narodowego panteonu, oraz nowoczesnych koncepcji historiograficznych. Kluczowym osiągnięciem tego okresu było umieszczenie myśli Skoworody w szerokim kontekście europejskiej filozofii mistycznej XVII i XVIII wieku, co miało fundamentalne znaczenie dla legitymizacji kultury ukraińskiej jako integralnej części dziedzictwa europejskiego. Przełom ten przypisuje się głównie pracom Dmytry Czyżewskiego z lat 30. XX wieku. Integralną częścią monografii jest antologia i pełna bibliografia międzywojennych prac skoworodoznawczych

Opis:

The linguo-cultural approach in the poly-paradigmatic scope of modern linguistics determines the appearance of scientific studies on multilevel language units as ethnomarked resources that express national culture and mentality in the folk literary texts, folklore, parables. In this aspect, Ukrainian folk songs stand out due to the high poeticism, expressiveness, imagery and lyricism created by syntactic constructions. This article, in particular, analyzes interrogative constructions as meaningful components of folk song discourse that affect mental spheres of the language personality and mark the national-linguistic worldview of the Ukrainian speaker. Drawing upon the research material the author defined communicative-intentional content of interrogative statements, characterized the models-realization of query intentions, which, as evidenced by the created source data, verbalize, on the one hand, multidirectional interrogative components (pronouns and adverbs) that embody explanatory intentions aimed at cognitive process-search, and on the other hand, interrogative particles that actualize emotional and evaluative semantics (doubts, assumptions, surprise, reproach, laughter, resentment, etc.) in the folk song discourse. By using the relevant linguistic methodology, it became possible to present the addresser-addressee continuum of song communication (mother – son, father – daughter, husband – wife, brother – sister, etc.), which emphasizes the important role of interrogative constructions in dialogic speech, in creating naturalness and dynamics of the song, as well as in the expression of primary and secondary interrogative functions. A detailed study of various genres of songs (Christmas carols, spring songs, bathing songs, baptismal songs, lullabies, family-household songs, social-household songs, etc.) enabled us to determine the functional potential of interrogative constructions aimed at expressiveness, emotionality and evaluation. It is also focused on the major and minor key of the song, highlighting deep sensuality and poeticism of man as a representative of Ukrainian culture and linguo-mentality.
Лінгвокультурологічний підхід у поліпарадигмальному просторі сучасного мовознавства детермінує появу наукових студій, присвячених аналізові різнорівневих мовних одиниць як етномаркованих ресурсів, що виражають національну культуру та ментальність у текстах народної творчості, у фольклорі, пареміях. У цьому аспекті вирізняються українські народні пісні, високу поетичність, експресивність, образність та ліризм яких створюють синтаксичні конструкції. Зокрема у статті проаналізовано питальні конструкції як посутні компоненти народнопісенного дискурсу, що заторкують ментальні сфери мовної особистості й маркують національно-мовний світогляд мовця-українця. На багатому фактичному матеріалі визначено комунікативно-інтенційний зміст питальних висловлень, схарактеризовано моделі-реалізації інтенцій запиту, які, як засвідчує створена джерельна база, вербалізують, з одного боку, різноспрямовані питальні компоненти (займенники й прислівники), що вербалізують зʼясувальні інтенції, спрямовані на розвиток когнітивного процесу-пошуку, а з іншого боку, питальні частки, що актуалізують у народнопісенному дискурсі емоційно-оцінну семантику (сумнів, припущення, здивування, докір, сміх, образу тощо). З використанням релевантної лінгвометодології представлено адресантно-адресатний континуум пісенної комунікації (мати – син, батько – донька, чоловік – дружина, брат – сестра та ін.), що підкреслює важливу роль питальних конструкцій у реалізації діалогійності, у створенні природності й динамічності пісні, у вираженні первинних та вторинних функцій питальності. Докладне вивчення різножанрових пісень (колядок і щедрівок, веснянок, коломийок, пісень купальських, хрестинних, колискових, родинно-побутових, соціально-побутових та ін.) вможливило визначення функційного потенціалу питальних конструкцій, спрямованого на вираження експресивності, емоційності та оцінки, на увиразнення мажорної чи мінорної тональності пісні, на вияскравлення глибинної чуттєвості та поетичності людини як репрезентанта української культури та лінгвоментальності.
