Opis:
Aim. The aim of this research is to examine how critical thinking is reflected in Lithuanian higher education study programmes and what conceptual model(s) of critical thinking are used by study programme  makers. Methods. The subject of the study encompasses 8 higher education study programmes and their subjects. They are analysed based on a constructed conceptual framework, which defines 9 critical thinking skills and 18 critical thinking dispositions. Results. Analysis, evaluation and decision making are the most common critical thinking skills embedded in the goals of a study course and its learning outcomes. Explanation, interpretation and making inferences are less pronounced. Dispositions are listed rarely and in quite an indistinct way. Only open-mindedness and honesty have clear expression and statement in study programmes, though to a lesser extent. Dispositions such as concern for every person, inquisitiveness and flexibility are very fragmented. Conclusions. For the meantime, critical thinking is neither reflected equally and coherently in all parts of study programmes – course goals, content, described methods and learning outcomes – nor clear conceptual models of critical thinking can be detected. Research restrictions. The policy of the colleges and universities on providing the descriptions of study programmes and syllabuses publicly, limits their accessibility. Due to the sampling of study programmes, the research represents only selected study programmes. Practical application. The created framework may be used to study programmes’ development by introducing the defined critical thinking skills in the descriptions of the study programmes more systematically.

Can dispositions replace laws in the description of the physical world?

In this paper, it is argued that, contrary to some suggestions in the philosophical literature, dispositions cannot replace laws in the description of the physical world. If for a certain type of physical situation a well-working law-based account is available, then it is not possible to describe that situation equally well in terms of dispositions. Using an example consisting of four laws (Coulomb’s law, Newton’s law of gravitation, the rule for the composition of forces and Newton’s second law), it is shown that when one attempts to replace a law-based account with a disposition-based account, the latter turns out to be either less informative or inferior with respect to theoretical virtues, such as simplicity, unification, non-triviality of predictions and explanatory power. Laws are also better suited to deal with interactions and their screening off. Using inference to the best explanation, one can conclude from this comparison that it is laws rather than dispositions that should be included in our ontological picture of nature.

Loneliness as cause

While loneliness has been linked to various mental and physical health problems, the sense in which loneliness is a cause of these conditions has so far attracted little philosophical attention. This paper aims to fill this gap by analyzing research on health effects of loneliness and therapeutic interventions through current approaches to causality. To deal with the problem of causality between psychological, social, and biological variables, the paper endorses a biopsychosocial model of health and disease. I will investigate how three main approaches to causality used in psychiatry and public health apply to loneliness: interventionism, mechanisms, and dispositional theories. Interventionism can specify whether loneliness causes specific effects, or whether a treatment works, incorporating results from randomized controlled trials. Mechanisms help explain how loneliness brings about negative health effects, spelling out psychological processes involved in lonely social cognition. Dispositional approaches help stress particular features of loneliness connected to negative social interactions, such as defensiveness. I will conclude by showing that previous research alongside emerging approaches to health effects of loneliness lend themselves to analysis in terms of the causal models under discussion.

This paper aims to explore and expand on Wittgenstein’s remarks on the nature of mental imagery. Despite some rather cryptic passages and obvious objections, his notion of mental imagery as possessing a constitutive (and not merely added) element of expressive thought and conceptuality offers critical insights linking perceptual capacities with our shared practices. In particular I seek to further develop Wittgenstein’s claim that perceptual impressions presuppose a “mastery of a technique.” I argue that this sense of technique, understood as acquired conceptual capacities, can explain and capture the rich and varied spectrum of expressive visual content that can be accessed by human beings initiated and embedded in a variety of shared practices. Using Gilbert Ryle’s account of dispositions, I cash out the notion of acquired conceptual capacities as spanning a wide latitude of responsive dispositions from mere “blind” visual habits to more normatively-guided, intelligent, and deliberately-trained visual “skills.” Visual impressions construed as such are hardly perceptually (nor representationally) univocal and instead exhibit a dynamic and reflexive plurivocity manifested through one’s initiation into shared practices and forms of life. This plurivocity makes possible a rich array of visual affordances that would otherwise not be accessible outside the context of a shared practice. This suggests that human beings possess a distinctive kind of expressive and responsive intelligence which picks out visual affordances determined not so much by a merely receptive perceptual faculty but by the subject’s skillful, active, and responsive engagement with the world.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza językoznawcza uczuć przeprowadzona na materiale zaczerpniętym z powieści S. T. Aksakowa "Detskiye gody Bagrowa-wnuka".Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów, z czego dwa pierwsze stanowią jej część recepcyjną. Rozdział pierwszy dotyczy tekstu źródłowego, jakim jest autobiograficzna powieść S. T. Aksakowa "Detskiye gody Bagrowa–wnuka". Krótko przedstawiona jest geneza utworu jako powieści autobiograficznej charakterystycznej dla panującego w Rosji w drugiej połowie XIX w. nurtu realistycznego.Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest uczuciom w ujęciu psychologicznym. Autorka przytacza definicje emocji sformułowane przez różnych specjalistów oraz omawia sposoby powstawania i wyrażania emocji.Rozdział trzeci traktuje o uczuciach w ujęciu językoznawczym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem prac A. Wierzbickiej oraz I. Nowakowskiej-Kempnej. Przytoczone są również opinie innych lingwistów, których badania dotyczą różnych aspektów związanych z emocjami. Autorka przedstawia wybrane środki językowe służące werbalizacji stanów emocjonalnych. Rozdział czwarty stanowi analizę językoznawczą uczuć przeprowadzoną na podstawie fragmentów zaczerpniętych z powieści "Detskiye gody Bagrowa–wnuka". Autorka pracy omawia wybrane uczucia pozytywne i negatywne oraz wskazuje sposoby ich werbalizacji za pomocą środków językowych, takich jak: środki leksykalne, składniowe i frazeologiczne.
The paper contains an analysis of the linguistic methods in which people express emotions. Emotions have been divided into two categories: emotions–affects and feelings–dispositions. The author describes the selected examples of affects and dispositions.The ways of the verbalization are different, starting from the single words (lexemes), the specific structure of the sentences and the phraseology. Talking about emotions, the speakers are referring to something as an attitude or an emotion depending on the adopted perspective.The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter presents the source of the examples – the novel "The childhood years of Bagrov grandson" wrote by the Russian writer S. T. Aksakow. The second chapter is devoted psychological descriptions of the emotions. The third chapter concentrates on the linguistics’ theories referring emotions–affects and feelings–dispositions. The fourth chapter presents some examples of the verbalization methods used while talking about human’s emotions.Summarizing her work the author concludes that the examples taken from the novel are good base to analyze the verbalization methods of the emotions.

n the article I discuss the conceptual problem of other minds and different approaches to mental concepts. Firstly, I introduce the conceptual problem and argue that solutions proposed by theory-theory and direct perception approach are inadequate. I claim that mental concepts are neither theoretical terms nor observational terms. Then, I consider third option which states that mental concepts are dispositional terms, i.e. they concern particular patterns (stereotypes) of behavior. Finally, I argue that dispositional approach is to some extent coherent with phenomenological account and that phenomenological concept of embodiment can improve this position.

The article examines legal regulations concerning pious dispositions of will contained in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The research problem, that is, identification of the legal requirements for a lawful acceptance of pious will, indicates that anyone can effect voluntary dispositions of property for pious causes (c. 1299, §1), if he has the capacity to perform acts in law, subject to canon 668, §5. The legislator distinguishes three ways of disposing of property for pious causes: inter vivos (e.g. by a donation agreement), 2. mortis causa (e.g. by a will and testament, a testamentary legacy, or legatum), and 3. through trust for pious causes (c. 1302). In adopting pious dispositions of will, not only canon law, but also civil law should be respected, without prejudice to the supervisory authority of the ordinary bishop expressed in canon 1301, §§1 and 3; canon 1302, §§1 and 2, and canon 1304.
