Opis:
This research explores strategies for effectively preparing for and mitigating the impact of seismic natural disasters on individuals and their health. The study underscores the potential for sustainable furniture solutions to play a pivotal role, emphasising the critical need for proactive disaster risk reduction. Drawing on descriptive analysis of case studies from events such as the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, the research employs an analytical framework to examine the application of recycled cardboard furniture in addressing the needs of disaster-prone regions. The study advocates for locally sourced solutions to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery efforts by optimising the utilisation of sustainable furniture, particularly in developing countries like Palestine. The findings suggest that leveraging locally recycled cardboard furniture can offer a scalable, cost-effective approach to furnishing disaster-affected areas, facilitating ease of transportation, storage, and assembly without requiring specialised skills.

Opis:
The horizontal motion of the system: rigid block-accelerating subsoil is analysed, using the most simple approach. First, the method of analysis is described and illustrated for constant coefficient of friction between the block and subsoil. Then, the changing coefficient of friction is taken into account, and its influence on the motion shown. In the next step of analysis, the influence of horizontal force on permanent relative displacement of the block with respect to subsoil is illustrated for constant and changing coefficients of friction. The method presented in this paper form a basis for critical discussion of the Newmark approach, that is a kind of standard in earthquake geotechnics.

Determination of Design Earthquake Magnitude by Deterministical Approach in Duzce District, Turkey

Opis:
This study presents an evaluation of earthquake risk in Duzce city in Turkey. The seismicity of Duzce has been suyveyed by using the earthquakes M ≥ 5.0 that occurred in the region for the time interval 1967-2003.This study has been performed utilizing time independent probabilistic model to predict the future earthquakes activities. The North Anatolian Fault (NAF), which runs through the northern region of Turkey (between the Eurasian and Arabian plates), has been highly Known in recent years due to a couple of large earthquakes that occurred along the (NAF) way. Recently, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Duzce city on November 12, 1999; its epicenter located in the town of Duzce. Available reports indicate that more than 100 buildings were destroyed, approximately 400 confirmed dead and over 800 injured. Turkey has a long history of major ground shaking along the North Anatolian Fault. The seismicity along this fault is dominated by intermediate to large magnitude events with relatively few small events. Since 1939, there have been 11 magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquakes along the fault, (nine of which had magnitudes greater than 7.0) making it one of the most seismically active right-lateral strike-slip faults in the world. These previous earthquakes follow a pattern that progresses generally in the western direction along the fault. The North Anatolian Fault extends more than 1400 km. A right-lateral fault is one that, if an observer was standing on one side of the fault looking towards the other side, the observer would see the ground on the other side of the fault move to the right. A strike-slip fault describes the relative motion of the ground on either side of the rupture as parallel to the fault direction.

After the earthquake of 2011, the Japanese authorities decided to switch the focus of its foreign policy from ‘economic diplomacy’ (promoting goods) to ‘scientific diplomacy’ (‘know-how’ expansion). In this case, China may become the most important ground for promoting Japanese innovation projects. The modern stage of the Sino-Japanese politico-military rivalry and competition is accompanied by an increase in the economic interdependence and the degree of mutual interest in solving regional problems. However, in the near future the close relations between Japan and the US will not let Tokyo fundamentally reverse its policy toward China.

Opis:
The paper deals with engineering analysis of breakwater behaviour due to earthquake- induced subsoil liquefaction. First, a simple model enabling analysis of pore-pressure generation in saturated granular soils, due to cyclic loading, is outlined. It is also shown how this model can be applied to the analysis of seabed behaviour during earthquakes. Then, a simple model of breakwater resting on saturated subsoil in which the phenomena of pore-pressure generation and liquefaction take place is described. This model enables estimation of changes of seabed effective reaction due to pore-pressure generation, as well as subsequent sinking of the breakwater due to subsoil liquefaction. Numerical examples illustrate theoretical considerations and show links between breakwater behaviour and earthquake characteristics.

Opis:
Messina in the stories of Polish travelers over the course of centuries: the double face of the city – The article presents Messina’s ‘verbal postcards’ left by Polish participants in the Grand Tour and travelers who visited Sicily in later times. Travelers whose accounts are widely known, such as Anonymous (1595), Michał Borch, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Chrystian Kamsetzer (XVIII c.), Zygmunt Krasiński (nineteenth century), but also less well-known ones such as writer Zofia Sokołowska, arriving in Sicily in the tragic year of the earthquake (1908), left descriptions from their stays in Messina about the emotional charge they felt, one closely related to the historical moment in which they arrived on the island. This will therefore be a thorough analysis of a fragment of the Sicilian journey concerning Messina left by some Polish travelers, taking into account their professions, areas of interest and the period in which they were in Sicily.

Opis:
The paper presents results of the numerical analysis of the fire damper used in ventilation systems under the earthquake loading. The research was conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Nuclear Safety Standards Commission. The aim of the analysis was to examine the fire damper with respect to its resistance to service loadings, structural integrity, and capability to stay operative after an earthquake. The analysis was carried out using the Finite Element Method in LS-Dyna software. The earthquake loading was modelled as accelerations, measured in three directions during the earthquake. For modelling of the materials behaviour, material models taking into account the influence of strain rate on hardening were used. The analysis consisted of three stages, which were: loading the construction with the earth gravity, earthquake simulation by loading with accelerations in three directions, and, finally, closing the fire damper. The analysis has shown that some of the construction elements undergo plastic deformations. However, the performed simulation of fire damper closing showed that despite these deformations, the device remains capable to keep its functionality and the damper closes hermetically. The results of the analysis were important design indications for the fire damper prototype.

In projecting of structure systems it is necessary to take the interaction between structure-foundation-ground triplets. While designing engineering structures, structure foundation should operate in accordance with the ground as much as possible and should fulfill the design criteria in geotechnical and structural means. Structure-ground interaction should be a non-negligible element of structure design. The local geological soil conditions change the characteristics of surface seismic response. The structural damages after earthquakes have been influenced significantly by local soil conditions. In this study the effects of local soil conditions on earthquake damages have been evaluated. The aim of study was also to evaluate the interaction between soil conditions and structures. In a frame of a common model where ground environment, foundation type and superstructure are taken into consideration together, mutual interaction of ground and structure during earthquake should be taken into account while making the calculations. The other goal of this study is evaluate the impact of local soil conditions on structural design.
