Opis:: The dissertation addresses the problem of ecotopia as a contemporary variant of positive utopia and attempts to find its structural components in literary texts that fit the genre assumptions of climate fiction. To this end, an analysis of Ernest Callenbach's "Ecotopia" was made based on the interpretive criteria proposed by David Barnhill, as well as a comparative interpretation of two contemporary climate fictions - novels "The Carhullan Army" by Sarah Hall and "Jasność" by Maja Wolny. In the course of these considerations, the problem of the dystopian potential of ecotopias is recognized and addressed.
W rozprawie poruszony został problem ekotopii jako współczesnej odmiany utopii pozytywnej oraz podjęta została próba odnalezienia jej strukturalnych komponentów w tekstach literackich wpisujących się w założenia gatunkowe climate fiction. W tym celu dokonana została analiza "Ecotopii" Ernesta Callenbacha w oparciu o kryteria interpretacyjne zaproponowane przez Davida Barnhilla, a także interpretacja porównawcza dwóch współczesnych fikcji klimatycznych - powieści "The Carhullan Army" Sarah Hall oraz "Jasności" Mai Wolny. W trakcie tych rozważań dostrzeżony i poruszony został problem dystopijnego potencjału ekotopii.

Racjonalne instrumentarium jakim dysponujemy nie jest niestety wystarczające do zaprojektowania eutopii, czyli miejsca szczęśliwego - przesądza o tym fragmentaryczność przyjmowanych punktów widzenia oraz perswazyjny charakter, konieczny przy upowszechnianiu każdej utopijnej wizji. Niniejszy artykuł proponuje zastąpienie utopijnej metodyki budowania lepszych światów tzw. inżynierią cząstkową i myśleniem w kategoriach ekotopii, czyli stopniowych, dostosowawczych zmian środowiska swojego życia. Jako punkt odniesienia autorka wykorzystuje wizje naprawy edukacji zaproponawane przez M. C. Nussbaum. Opis:: Celem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza wybranych utworów fikcji spekulatywnej Margaret Atwood i Ursuli K. Le Guin poprzez pryzmat teorii ekofeminizmu. W swojej pracy skupiam się na relacji pomiędzy fikcyjnymi społeczeństwami i społecznościami z powieści Atwood i Le Guin, a ich poszczególnymi środowiskami. Pragnę dowieść, iż w swoich utworach fikcji spekulatywnej Atwood i Le Guin tworzą społeczeństwa i społeczności, które nie cierpią bądź cierpią mniej z powodu kryzysu ekologicznego, tak długo jak stosują się do zasad filozofii ekofeminizmu. Na potrzeby mojej analizy wybrałam dwie powieści Atwood "Oryks i Derkacz" (2003) i "Rok potopu"(2009), a także nowelę Le Guin "Słowo las znaczy świat" (1972) i jej powieść "Wydziedziczeni" (1974).
The aim of my MA thesis is to analyse selected works of speculative fiction by Margaret Atwood and Ursula K. Le Guin through the lens of ecofeminist theory. In my thesis, I focus on the relationships that the fictional societies and communities that feature in Atwood’s and Le Guin’s works have with their respective environments. I wish to argue that in their speculative fiction, Atwood and Le Guin create societies and communities that do not suffer or suffer less from ecological crisis as long as they adhere to the principles of ecofeminist philosophy. For the purpose of my analysis, I have chosen Atwood’s novels Oryx and Crake (2003) and The Year of the Flood (2009), as well as Le Guin’s novella The Word for World is Forest (1972) and the novel The Dispossessed (1974).

Opis:: With few truly hopeful visions currently emerging from mainstream academia or from established science concerning humanity’s collective environmental outlook, it might be necessary to go off the beaten track in order to see how we can maintain a sense of hope while realistically preparing for the gradual erosion of the world as we know it, therefore also leaving some psychological and emotional room for a sense of the tragic. This essay considers three lesser-known but, in our eyes, important contemporary perspectives on the ecological future: Ernest Callenbach’s “ecotopia,” John Michael Greer’s “catabolic descent” and William deBuys’s “hospice for Earth”—all three of which aim to challenge the currently still dominant focus on the binary of “progress or apocalypse” that flows from modern thought. We critically examine these visions and argue that, when combined, they offer an approach to the ecological future that is both more realistic and more inspiring. In essence, Callenbach’s ecotopian vision still has significant traction—and an almost “erotic” appeal—today, but needs to be adapted to contemporary ecological realities through Greer’s and deBuys’s insights into decline, grief and the tragic.

Opis:: Utopie stanowią interesujący temat z pogranicza badań literaturoznawczych, socjologicznych oraz filozoficznych. O nietracącej na aktualności roli utopii świadczy również twórczości Olgi Tokarczuk. Pisarka w swoich dziełach czyni wielokrotnie obiektem zainteresowania przestrzenie oddalone od centrum, peryferyjne, w których krystalizują się myśli o ekscentrycznych utopiach.Celem pracy jest przyjrzenie się przestrzeniom utopijnym przedstawionym w opowiadaniu "Zielone Dzieci, czyli opis dziwnych zdarzeń na Wołyniu sporządzony przez medyka Jego Królewskiej Mości Jana Kazimierza, Williama Davissona" oraz w powieściach "Prowadź swój pług przez kości umarłych" i "Empuzjon". Wybór tych dzieł jest nieprzypadkowy, ponieważ wskazuje na zmianę kręgów tematycznych w twórczości Tokarczuk. Każde z dzieł, choć różni się przedstawionymi realiami, ukazuje postaci w sytuacjach granicznych (wojny, choroby, samotność). W takich warunkach jeszcze bardziej ponętną jawi się myśl o symbiozie z szeroko pojętą naturą. Zestawienie wybranych dzieł noblistki pozwala zauważyć, że kreowane przez nią utopie miejsc, są pokrewne z oświeceniową koncepcją J.J. Rousseau, w której szczęście człowieka powiązane jest z bliskością natury. Antyurbanistyczny oraz ekologiczny wymiar budowanych światów pozwala dostrzec dojrzewającą w twórczości Tokarczuk myśl o potrzebie symbiozy z otoczeniem. Wiąże się to z próbą wyjścia z myślenia o „nie-miejscach” do pracy nad współistnieniem w ramach ekotopii. Główną metodę analityczną stanowi literaturoznawcza analiza porównawcza wybranych dzieł Olgi Tokarczuk. Temat pracy został również omówiony z wykorzystaniem narzędzi z dziedzin krytyki literackiej oraz ekokrytyki.
Utopias are an interesting topic on the borderline of literary, sociological and philosophical studies. Olga Tokarczuk's works also testify to the topical role of utopia. In her works, the writer often focuses her attention on spaces far from the centre, peripheral, in which thoughts of eccentric utopias crystallize.The aim of the work is to look at the utopian spaces presented in the story "Green Children, i.e. a description of strange events in Volhynia written by the physician of His Majesty Jan Kazimierz, William Davisson" and in the novels "Drive your plow over the bones of the dead" and "Empuzion". The choice of these works is not accidental, as it indicates a change in the thematic circles in Tokarczuk's work. Each of the works, although different in the presented realities, shows the characters in borderline situations (wars, illnesses, loneliness). In such conditions, the thought of symbiosis with the broadly understood nature seems even more alluring. The juxtaposition of selected works by the Nobel Prize winner shows that the utopias of places she creates are related to the Enlightenment concept of J.J. Rousseau, in which human happiness is linked to the closeness of nature. The anti-urban and ecological dimension of the worlds built allows us to notice the thought about the need for symbiosis with the environment maturing in Tokarczuk's work. This involves an attempt to move away from thinking about "non-places" to work on coexistence within ecotopia.The main analytical method is a literary comparative analysis of selected works by Olga Tokarczuk. The topic of the work was also discussed with the use of tools from the fields of literary criticism and ecocriticism.

Essays Commemorating the Five-Hundredth Anniversary of Thomas More’s Utopia is the ﬁrst volume of Facta Ficta Research Centre’s in Kraków series “Frontiers of Nowhere”, published in co-operation with Villa Decius Association as a part of the world-wide research initiative Utopia 500 to celebrate ﬁve hundred years since the publication of sir Thomas More’s De Optimo Reipublicæ Statu Deque Nova Insula Utopia Libellus Vere Aureus, Nec Minus Salutaris Quam Festivus in 1516. The twenty-six essays which compose this collection cover a substantial range of both historical and theoretical themes, indicating at the least that the utopian idea thrives today across a number of disciplines as well as in domains (like computer games) which are themselves of recent origin and which indicate that utopia can also be addressed as an aspect of the internal psychic fantasy world. There is some consideration here of the lengthy and complex historical relationship between utopian ideals and religion. There is some eﬀort to reconsider practical eﬀorts to found actual communities which embody utopian ideals. Several authors revisit the emotional substrata of utopian aspiration rendered accessible through music in particular. Literature is here nonetheless the chief focus, in keeping with the form of Thomas More’s original text and that of the tradition which has imitated and satirised it. The themes represented here mirror in literary form the dystopian dri in the external world discussed above. Many of the leading authors of post-totalitarian dystopian ﬁction are included here, notably (to name but a few) Margaret Atwood, James Graham Ballard, Robert A. Heinlein, David Foster Wallace and, most recently, Michel Houellebecq. Within these treatments, the possibilities are explored that dystopia may emerge from or assume the form of racist regimes, environmental destruction, corporate dictatorship, or religious fundamentalism, or some combination of these factors. Such potential outcomes of modernity need, the authors of this volume also assure us, to be balanced against the utopian promise which bodily remodelling entertains, and the possibility of longevity which scientiﬁc and technical advances encapsulate as the epitome of modern individualist utopianism.
