The author considers the effect of numerical integration in the case of solving a two-dimensional eigenvalue problem for the second-order elliptic differential operator via the finite element method. It is proved that the optimal estimates for eigenfunctions (namely, the estimates of the same order as the optimal estimates for the classical finite element approximation without numerical integration) are valid under the assumption that the precision of the numerical quadrature is the same as that for the corresponding boundary value problem.

Opis:: If a graph is connected then the largest eigenvalue (i.e., index) generally changes (decreases or increases) if some local modifications are performed. In this paper two types of modifications are considered:
(i) for a fixed vertex, t edges incident with it are deleted, while s new edges incident with it are inserted;
(ii) for two non-adjacent vertices, t edges incident with one vertex are deleted, while s new edges incident with the other vertex are inserted.
Within each case, we provide lower and upper bounds for the indices of the modified graphs, and then give some sufficient conditions for the index to decrease or increase when a graph is modified as above.

Opis:: The problem of distinguishing, in terms of graph topology, digraphs with real and partially non-real Laplacian spectra is important for applications. Motivated by the question posed in [R. Agaev, P. Chebotarev, Which digraphs with rings structure are essentially cyclic?, Adv. in Appl. Math. 45 (2010), 232-251], in this paper we completely list the Laplacian eigenvalues of some digraphs obtained from the wheel digraph by deleting some arcs.

Opis:: Given a bounded domain Ω ⊂ Rn, numbers p > 1, ∝ ≥ 0 and A ∈ /0, /Ω/], consider the optimization problem: find a subset D ⊂ Ω, of measure A, for which the first eigenvalue of the operator u → - div(/∇u/p-2 ∇u) + ∝ΧD/u/p-2u with the Dirichlet boundary condition is as small as possible. We show that the optimal configuration D is connected with the corresponding positive eigenfunction u in such a way that there exists a number t ≥ 0 for which D = { u ≤ t}. We also give a new proof of symmetry of optimal solutions in the case when Ω is Steiner symmetric and p = 2.
