Opis:
Utilization of empty fruit bunches (EFB) to increase biogas production could be developed through co-digestion of palm oil mill effluent (POME). Pre-treatment of EFB (shredding, grinding, and soaking) before it is utilized as a feedstock for biogas production is important to increase the biodegradability of EFB. The evaluation of the impact of EFB utilization on biogas production should be investigated to determine the optimum process conditions for biogas production from EFB and POME. This research consists of three steps: 1) Optimization of size of EFB and ratio of EFB-POME, 2) Optimization of hydrolysis and acidification retention time, and 3) Optimization of biogas production. The research result shows that co-digestion of EFB and POME increases biogas and methane production. Compared to POME only, co-digestion using POME and EFB (shredded 10%, shredded 15%, crushed 10%, and crushed 15%) is increasing biogas production in batch systems by 54.1%, 54.1%, 45.5%, and 75.2%, respectively. The research result also shows that in a continuous system with HRT for 25 days and similar feedstock, biogas production increased by 43.3%, 41.6%, 35.6%, and 62.6%, respectively, with methane concentrations maintained at about 60%. Co-digestion of EFB-POME with 15% crushed EFB is recommended to be applied in palm oil mills to increase biogas production.

Opis:
The efficiency of phosphorus uptake by plants in an Ultisol soil is very low because most of the soil phosphorus is precipitated by Al and Fe. Oil palm empty fruit bunches can be used as basic materials of biochar and compost, and as sources of isolates of phosphate solubilizing fungi. This study was aimed at elucidating the effect of application of phosphate-solubilizing fungi with biochar and the compost produced from oil palm empty fruit bunches on the growth and yield of maize an Ultisol of Central Kalimantan. This study consisted of two experiments. The first experiment was inoculation of four isolates of phosphate solubilizing fungi isolated from of oil palm empty fruit bunches, i.e. Acremonium (TB1), Aspergillus (TM7), Hymenella (TM1) and Neosartorya (TM8) to 'biocom' media (mixture of biochar and compost generated from oil palm empty fruit bunches) to obtain phosphate-solubilizing fungi that can adapt to the media. In the second experiment, the best results in the first experiment were applied to an Ultisol soil planted with maize. The results showed that the isolates that were best adapted to biocom media were Aspergillus-TB7 with 60:40 proportion (60% biochar + 40% compost) and Neosartorya-TM8 with 70:30 proportions (60% biochar + 40% compost). The use of the first experiment results in the second experiment showed that the application of biocom plus Neosartorya-TM8 (BTM) on an Ultisol soil significantly improved the growth and yield of maize, as well as its the phosphorus uptake and uptake efficiency.

Opis:
The study aimed at elucidating the utilization of coal fly ash and oil palm empty fruit bunch compost to improve the soil phosphorus uptake and yield of maize grown on Ultisol. The investigation was carried out in a greenhouse. The treatments tested were a combination of four coal fly ash doses (0, 20, 40, and 80 t ha-1) and three doses of oil palm empty fruit bunch compost (0, 10, and 20 t ha-1). At 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after planting, plant height, leaf number and stem diameter were observed. At the time of harvest (10 weeks after planting), fresh and dry weights of cobs, roots, stem, leaves, and seeds, as well as P uptake on the plant tissues, were observed. The results showed that the application of coal fly ash and oil palm empty fruit bunch compost significantly increased the P uptake, growth and yield of maize. The combination of 80 t coal fly ash ha-1 with 20 t oil palm empty fruit bunch compost ha-1 resulted in the highest P uptake, growth and yield of maize. Compared to the control treatment, the increase in P uptake by maize, the fresh cob weight, the dry cob weight, the biomass dry weight, and the dry seed weight were 303.23%, 285.39%, 364.91%, 329.59% and 1,591.70%, respectively.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper focuses on the synthesis and comparison of hydrogel- and xerogel-based sorbents from EFB. Design/methodology/approach: Hydrogels were synthesised by polymerisation of EFB biochar with acrylamide (AAm) as a monomer, N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, as well as by internal gelation method of sodium alginate, empty fruit bunch (EFB), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and glucono delta-lactone (GDL). From the alginate hydrogels obtained, xerogels were synthesised via the oven-drying method. Then, EFB-based hydrogel and xerogel sorbents were analysed and compared based on characterisation analysis by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer− Emmett−Teller (BET), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Findings: The xerogel-based EFB is a better adsorbent than the hydrogel-based EFB because it has a larger pore volume (0.001449 cm3/g), larger pore size (63.7987 nm), higher moisture content (7.97%), lower ash content (12.55%), and is more thermally stable. Research limitations/implications: The research is to compare two new adsorbents, namely Hydrogel and Xerogel, from EFB in terms of their characteristics. Practical implications: Both adsorbents show a highly toxic material uptake, especially EFB xerogel. This adsorbent is comparable with the other commercialised adsorbent. Thus, this product can be a highly potential adsorbent for gas and wastewater adsorption. Originality/value: The authenticity results of this article were found to be 15% similar. The novelty of this paper is to compare the two adsorbents, namely hydrogel and xerogel, that originated from EFB.

Opis:
The nickel post-mining soil with an open-pit mining system has poor soil chemical and physical properties. Thus, it requires appropriate site-specific management so that it can be optimized as a plant cultivation area. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and mycorrhizal vesicular-arbuscular (MVA) in improving soil fertility of nickel post-mining soil. This study was conducted using a randomized block trial design with 2 factors. The first factor is compost with 3 treatments, consisting of 5 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K1), 7.5 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K2), 10 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K3) and the second factor was mycorrhiza (M) in the fine-crushed brick carrier media with as many as 3 treatments consisting of 2 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M1), 4 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M2), 6 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M3). A total of 9 treatment combinations were repeated 3 times, arranged in experimental pots at the Experimental Farm of Hasanuddin University, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The results showed that the compost and MVA treatments had a significant effect on increasing the average values of cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, available P2O5, calcium and magnesium exchangeable,as well as decreasing exchangeable aluminum and iron. The highest soil properties values were found in the combination of compost 10 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K3) and MVA 6 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M3). The application of compost from OPEFB combined with MVA significantly improved soil fertility, which was indicated by improving soil chemical and biological properties. The application of MVA at various doses had a significant effect on the dry weight, root length of Calopogonium mucunoides and increase the number of MVA spores in the soil.

Opis:
Purpose: This research aims to investigate the detailed state of adsorption kinetics modelling and research on the application of hydrogen sulfide adsorption by hydrogel derived from empty fruit bunch (EFB), the determination of the kinetics parameters, and the comparison between models in a selection of the best-fit model. Design/methodology/approach: The kinetics modelling used are pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the suitability of the equation R2. After obtaining the results, the comparison was made by comparing the R2 of each model. The pseudo-second-order model has a higher value of correlation coefficient, R2, making it the most suitable kinetics model for adsorption systems. Findings: The R2 for pseudo-first-order on the effect of dry bed height was 0.8814, whereas its effect on powder bed height was 0.9537, and that of the wet bed height was 0.9607. Meanwhile, the R2 for pseudo-second-order on the effect of dry bed height was 0.89, on the effect of the powder bed height was 0.99, and on the effect of the bed height of wet was 0.99, the highest among kinetic models. Based on the results, the pseudo-second-order model best describes the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by hydrogel biochar. Research limitations/implications: The kinetics modelling used are pseudo-first-order, and pseudo-second-order models for hydrogen sulfide adsorption by hydrogel originating from empty fruit bunches (EFB). Practical implications: Based on the results, the pseudo-second-order model best describes the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by hydrogel biochar. Kinetic studies are important in understanding the reactions and design of the process. Originality/value: The authenticity results of this article were found to be 17% similar. The novelty of this paper is the kinetics study of the new adsorbent developed based on EFB to adsorb H2S.
