Opis:
The idea of error decomposition originates in regression where squared loss function is applied. More recently, several authors have proposed corresponding decompositions for classification problem, where 0-1 loss is used. The paper presents the analysis of some properties of recently developed decompositions for 0-1 loss.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to draw attention to the problems of error analysis in terms of its suitability for glottodidactics. Error analysis from a conventional perspective consists of successive stages of error identification, description, explication and evaluation. Carrying out these activities in the procedural order enables implementation of the last phase of analysis – error therapy, which is also its goal. In a broader perspective, error prevention is also taken into account. However, it turns out that in pedagogical practice proper conduct of the processes of identifying, describing, and classifying errors may be complicated. The article briefly presents the technique of error analysis in foreign language teaching in theoretical terms and also shows problematic examples taken from research material in the form of written tasks in English of Polish secondary school students. A few reflections have been formulated to help teachers understand processes of linguistic difficulties and take appropriate decisions concerning the methodology of prevention and treatment of language errors.

Poprawa błędów w mowie w nauczaniu języka angielskiego jako języka obcego w liceum
Oral error correction in teaching English as a foreign language to secondary school learners
Autorzy:
Kołek, Ewa
Opis:
The aim of this thesis was to present, analyze and discuss the findings of the case study conducted in high school in Kraków which aimed at examining the types of students’ spoken errors, correction techniques used by the teacher and the teacher’s attitude towards errors and correction along with its influence on her behaviour in the classroom. The Theoretical Part presents the significance of errors in foreign language acquisition, the insight into the corrective feedback (CF) process, the overview of studies related to the provision of CF and underlines the importance of the decision-making process in the error correction process. The Empirical Part presents the detailed description of the study, research questions and rationale for the study along with the research methods applied for the comprehensive data collection. The participants of the study (upper secondary school learners and their English teacher) were observed, their lessons were recorded and analyzed with the focus on the students’ spoken errors and the teacher’s correction techniques. Moreover, the interview with the teacher was conducted to obtain additional data for allowing for more inquisitive analysis. The results indicate that the substantial majority of students’ spoken errors is related to grammar and phonology. As far as the teacher’s CF techniques are concerned it was observed that she mainly used the explicit correction. The motive behind this behaviour became clear on the basis of her responses given in the interview, which showed the consensus between her ideology and behaviour in the classroom.
Część teoretyczna prezentuje znaczenie błędów w nauczaniu języka obcego, wgląd w proces ich poprawy, przegląd badań temu poświęconych i podkreśla wagę procesu decyzyjnego w procesie poprawy.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to identify and analyse the most common phonetic errors caused by interference in the speech of native French-speaking learners of Polish (level ALI). The first part of the article focuses on the notion of language error in language teaching and learning, and error types and sources, including numerous interference phenomena (intra- and interlingual). The second part presents an analysis of the phonetic interference in three types of spoken language samples: spontaneous conversation, prepared speech and reading aloud. The most common errors identified involve Polish phonemes that do not exist in French, and groups and chains of consonants. The third part of the analysis demonstrates a significant correlation between phonetics and orthography. Pronunciation errors caused by interference from the speaker’s native orthography were present when reading aloud, yet absent in spontaneous or prepared speech. The final part of the paper presents some possible applications of both negative and positive transfer for Polish language learning and teaching.

English Language Error Analysis of the Written Texts Produced by Ukrainian Learners: Data CollectionRecently, the studies of second language acquisition have tended to focus on learners errors as they help to predict the difficulties involved in acquiring a second language. Thus, teachers can be made aware of the difficult areas to be encountered by the students and pay special attention and devote emphasis to them. The research goals of the article are to define what error analysis is and how it is important in L2 teaching process, to state the significance of corpus studies in identifying of different types of errors and mistakes, to provide the results of error analysis of the corpus of written texts produced by Ukrainian learners. In this article, major types of errors in English as a second language for Ukrainian students are mentioned.

Opis:
Most of the laboratory studies on recasts have examined the role of intensive recasts provided repeatedly on the same target structure. This is different from the original definition of recasts as the reformulation of learner errors as they occur naturally and spontaneously in the course of communicative interaction. Using a within-group research design and a new testing methodology (video-based stimulated correction posttest), this laboratory study examined whether extensive and spontaneous recasts provided during smallgroup work were beneficial to adult L2 learners. Participants were 26 ESL learners, who were divided into seven small groups (3-5 students per group), and each group participated in an oral activity with a teacher. During the activity, the students received incidental and extensive recasts to half of their errors; the other half of their errors received no feedback. Students’ ability to detect and correct their errors in the three types of episodes was assessed using two types of tests: a stimulated correction test (a video-based computer test) and a written test. Students’ reaction time on the error detection portion of the stimulated correction task was also measured. The results showed that students were able to detect more errors in error+recast (error followed by the provision of a recast) episodes than in error-recast (error and no recast provided) episodes (though this difference did not reach statistical significance). They were also able to successfully and partially successfully correct more errors in error+recast episodes than in error-recast episodes, and this difference was statistically significant on the written test. The reaction time results also point towards a benefit from recasts, as students were able to complete the task (slightly) more quickly for error+recast episodes than for error-recast episodes.

It is shown that each quadrature computed by Romberg algorithm is exact for slightly perturbed data (computed values of the integrand). For the ordinary summation algorithm the cumulation of rounding errors is proportional to N, the number of quadrature modes. For more elaborate summation the cumulation is proportional to log N. For the binary floating point arithmetic with proper rounding of the sum, the cumulation of errors can be made practically independent of N. In each case the influence of Romberg extrapolation on the cumulation of rounding errors is bounded by a constant.
