Opis:: In the presented polemical article I discuss the paper by Izabela Wagner (Selektywna analiza problemu publikacji humanistów i przedstawicieli nauk społecznych w języku angielskim [Analysis of the problem regarding publishing the scientific articles written in English in humanities and social sciences by scholars originated and educated in non-English speaking countries], „Przegląd Socjologii Jakościowej”, 2012, t. 8, nr 1, s. 166–187). One of the main issues of her polemic was the process of articles’ review in the scientific international journals. On the basis of her single experience with an American journal, Wagner presents a very negative view on this process. However, neither the author of the presented polemic, nor other known to him Polish scientist who have published articles in the international journals in the area of social sciences have encountered problems described by Wagner. In my opinion, such information is very important for the readers of PSJ, since subjective and pejorative presentation of the reviewing process might cause prejudices towards publishing articles in the international journals among the Polish scientists. Additionally, I described in detail the process of assignment of points to the international journals by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (the knowledge of which might help to avoid important misunderstandings). Moreover, I presented the possible ways of dealing with unethical editor’s behavior described by Wagner and analyzed her advices on publishing strategies and international career.

Opis:: In general introduction few examples of astronomical explanations of well-known and common local physical phenomena are presented. They are meant to show that it is often much easier to explain commonly experienced phenomena by investigating the behavior of something which is very far from the observer. In main chapters of the article the transparency of interstellar and intergalactic medium as well as the mystery of diffuse interstellar bands are presented. These very important fundamental problems are – for some reasons – overlooked by contemporary researchers. Plausible mechanisms of sociological, psychological and methodological kinds are proposed in last chapter as a potential explanation of fading of the scientific attempts to understand the nature and to create better future for the mankind. These are ethics in science and interdisciplinary way of solving scientific problems.

Tytuł:: Implementation of the course “good chemistry : methodological, ethical and social implications” : a case study

Opis:: The article describes the practical implementation of the course titled “Good Chemistry: Methodological, Ethical, and Social Implications” available on the EuChemS e-learning platform. This MOOC course has been used in various ways at several European universities and through blended learning at Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland), which is discussed in this article. Since the groups of students participating in the course were not large and it is worth taking a closer look/insight at this issue, the case study method was used. Sample materials and activities for this course are presented. The survey responses of lecturers and students, as well as the activities and posts of Jagiellonian University in Krakow students on the remote learning platform, were analyzed. The strengths and weaknesses of the course were identified, and the need for continuous efforts by lecturers to develop ethical attitudes, critical thinking, and communication skills in students, especially in the field of socioscientific issues, was emphasized.

Opis:: Artykuł opisuje zjawisko “drapieżnych czasopism”, przedstawia ich charakterystyczne cechy, takie jak spamowanie czy wykorzystywanie fałszywych metryk oraz opisuje spowodowane tym problemy przynoszące szkodę nauce. Drapieżne czasopisma często nie prowadzą rzetelnego procesu recenzyjnego, pozwalając na tworzenie pseudonauki pod pozorem prawdziwej nauki. Drapieżne czasopisma często mają fikcyjny zespół redakcyjny, nie są przejrzyste w kwestiach finansów oraz siedziby, zawierają plagiaty i publikują niemalże wszystko. Wydawcy drapieżnych czasopism zachowują się nieetycznie. W zakończeniu artykułu wskazane jest, jak można uniknąć bycia ofiarą drapieżnych czasopism oraz jak można walczyć z drapieżnymi czasopismami.
This paper describes the phenomenon of predatory journals, the characteristics of predatory journals, including spamming and using fake metrics, and the problems they cause for science. Predatory journals often fail to properly manage peer review, allowing pseudo-science to be published dressed up as authentic science. Predatory journals frequently have imaginary editorial boards, do not operate any quality control, are unclear about payment requirements and about ownership or location, include plagiarised content. Predatory publishers generally behave unethically. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects of this development and how researchers can avoid becoming victimized by them.

Opis:: The inclusion of media technology in theatrical plays (Saltz, 2013) follows a contingent fascination and entanglement between human actors, technology and automata (Reilly, 2011) on stage. The contemporary play Spillikin – A Love Story places a new digital ‘actor’ in this debate: the humanoid robot as a socially interactive agent (Breazeal, 2002; Fong, Nourbakhsh, & Dautenhahn, 2003) and caring companion. This paper discusses the exhibition of sociability through the robot’s humanlike gestures and its ability to decipher human gestures on stage. The aim is to point to the ethical consequences for the audience concerning the robot’s implied autonomy to interact socially.

Opis:: Artykuł stanowi prezentację kompleksowego modelu formalnych i nieformalnych źródeł etyki akademickiej w Polsce. W tej kwestii autor analizuje trzy modele: 1) model integralności i wiarygodności; 2) model infrastruktury etycznej oraz 3) model społecznej odpowiedzialności nauki. Przy czym zawsze zakładamy, iż dany model stanowi system złożony, tj. składa się z rodzajowo różnych standardów etyki akademickiej, zarówno norm prawnych, jak i norm moralnych. Wskazane trzy modele nie ujawniają się jednak w Polsce w swojej czystej postaci. Raczej w procesie rozwoju stanowią one efekt pewnej ewolucji, ponieważ każdy kolejny model zawiera elementy modelu wcześniejszego. Proces stopniowej erozji modelu klasycznego (integralności i wiarygodności nauki) stanowi rezultat silnych obecnie ocen zewnętrznych, jak np. postulatu społecznej odpowiedzialności nauki oraz postulatu wzrostu efektywności prowadzenia badań naukowych.
The article presents a complex model of formal and informal sources of academic ethics in Poland. The author analyzes three models: 1) the model of integrity and credibility, 2) the model of ethical infrastructure and 3) the model of social responsibility. However, we are assuming that this model is a complex system, because it consists of various kinds of sources of academic ethics standards, both legal and moral sources. These three models, however, do not appear in Poland in pure form. Rather, it was a case of evolution in which the next model contained elements of the earlier model. The process of gradual erosion of the classical model (integrity and credibility of science) is the result of a strong influence of external conditions, mainly postulates of social responsibility of science and increase of effectiveness of scientific research.
