Opis:: This article is of polemical nature. It discusses main theses of the recently published book by Monika Stobiecka: Natura artefaktu, kultura eksponatu. Projekt krytycznego muzeum archeologicznego (2020). The book presents contemporary archaeology as a very innovative discipline striving for interdisciplinarity and extending beyond traditional research issues and borders. At the same, the authoress postulates a need to reorient archaeology and create a new type of archaeological museum, namely critical museum – “museum of life”.

Opis:: Due to the uniqueness of wet museum exhibits, there is often a shortage of adequately trained people to carry out conservation work in museum units. Unfortunately, in many cases, the museum exhibits require immediate work. There is usually a visible loss of preservative fluid, or no fluid at all if it has evaporated. Moreover, chipped lids and damaged jars frequently occur. Some exhibit labels are damaged or torn off. Some items have been exhibited incorrectly, but when they are transferred to a new vessel or the fluid is replaced, they gain added value. Although there is a great need for conservation work, many museologists fail to carry it out. A significant problem is the absence of unified conservation procedures or guidelines which could be applied for these types of cases. This paper includes conservation formulas and recipes used at the Molecular Techniques Unit. The authors of this paper hope that it will be helpful to all those who deal with preserving wet museum exhibits.

Opis:: Stan zachowania solnych eksponatów w postaci rzeźb solnych, reliefów, czy kryształów solnych zależy od parametrów powietrza w miejscu ich przechowywania. W obiektach podziemnych eksponaty te występują w środowisku powietrza wentylacyjnego, sprowadzanego z powierzchni, którego parametry termodynamiczne ulegają zmianie w ciągu roku. W artykule omówiono procesy wymiany ciepła i wilgoci, jakie zachodzą pomiędzy solą kamienną a powietrzem. Określono wartości parametrów powietrza, przy których zachodzić będą zjawiska szkodliwe dla rzeźb i kryształów solnych. Przedstawiono możliwości zabezpieczenia szczególnie cennych kryształów solnych w wyrobiskach podziemnych.
The conditions in which salt exhibits are preserved in the form of salt sculptures, reliefs or salt crystals depend on the parameters of air in the place where they are kept. In the case of underground objects, these exhibits are kept in ventilation air whose thermodynamic parameters change during the year. This paper presents the processes of heat and moisture exchange between rock salt and air. The values of air parameters for which harmful phenomena to sculptures and salt crystals are determined. The possibilities of preserving especially valuable salt crystals in underground excavations are also presented.

Opis:: It is important to emphasize that the insurance contract for museum collections loaned for temporary exhibitions does not need to be the adhesion contract, that means the contract agreed on the imposed by the insurer, general terms and conditions of insurance. The insurer has a right to form the contract model but is not obliged to do so, nonetheless, the museum lending the objects as the insured party and the museum borrowing the museum collections – a insurant – do not have to accept the contract with the content imposed by the insurer company. Museum collections are a special protection object, they require individually agreed insurance contract content. Thus, it is important to remember the insurance protection makes sense only when it is effective.
Umowa ubezpieczenia muzealiów wypożyczanych na wystawy czasowe nie musi być umową adhezyjną, czyli umową zawartą poprzez przystąpienie na podstawie narzuconych przez ubezpieczyciela ogólnych warunków ubezpieczenia. Sformułowanie wzorca umowy jest bowiem uprawnieniem ubezpieczyciela, a nie jego obowiązkiem, natomiast muzeum, wypożyczające zabytki, występujące jako ubezpieczony, ani też muzeum biorące muzealia – będące ubezpieczają- cym – nie musi się godzić na zawarcie umowy o treści z góry narzuconej przez zakład ubezpieczeń. Muzealia stanowią bowiem szczególny przedmiot ochrony, wymagający indywidualnego uzgodnienia treści umowy ubezpieczenia tychże zabytków. W związku z tym warto pamiętać, że ochrona ubezpieczeniowa tylko wtedy ma sens, gdy jest to ochrona skuteczna.

Opis:: The article attempts at presenting personal armaments of the Polish kings. The topic is a difficult one as the arms were not always signed, and the inventory of royal weapons were of a very general character. There is no doubt that Polish rulers had their own armaments. Most information concerns the armoury of King Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572) and the court courtiers working for the aforementioned monarch. The most famous ones were brothers, Florian and Walenty (Valentin) Sibenbürger from Nuremberg. The most significant dilemma as regards royal arms is connected with Augustus II the Strong and Augustus III. The arms signed with royal coat of arms, alongside the Wettin coat of arms, is presently located at Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden and is exhibited there at the permanent exhibition. The arms of our other rulers are currently located outside Poland and constitute the ornaments of the old weapons collection.
В статье описано личное оружие польских королей. Это сложная тема, т.к. на оружии нет клейма, а опись королевского оружия содержит информацию общего характера. Не вызывает сомнений, что у польских властителей были собственные арсеналы. Больше всего известно об арсенале Сигизмунда II Августа (1548–1572) и о придворных оружейниках, работавших на этого монарха. Самыми известными были братья Флориан и Валентин Зибенбургеры из Нюрнберга. Больше всего вопросов возникает по поводу оружия Августа II Сильного и Августа III. Оружие с королевскими гербами наряду с родовыми гербами Веттинов в настоящее время находится в постоянной экспозиции Государственных художественных собраний Дрездена. Оружие других польских королей также находится за пределами Польши и является украшением коллекций исторического оружия.

Opis:: W 2014 roku Muzeum Misyjno-Etnograficzne Księży Werbistów w Pieniężnie obchodziło 50 lat istnienia. Półwieczna (nie licząc okresu przedwojennego) praca kolekcjonerska zaowocowała powstaniem usystematyzowanych, bogatych zbiorów muzealnych. Artykuł zarysowuje kształt powstającego zbioru eksponatów, a następnie przedstawia jego dokładniejsze omówienie. Zgromadzone egzemplarze o profilu misjologiczno-etnograficznym reprezentują różne – pod względem kulturowym – obszary świata oraz różnorodne działy kultury materialnej i sztuki. Zebrane przedmioty pokazane zostały według wydzielonych asortymentów, ich liczebności i państw pochodzenia. Wspomniano też o okazach sztuki chrześcijańskiej, będącej wyrazem dialogu chrześcijaństwa z kulturami ludów miejscowych. Wyeksponowany dla zwiedzających fragment zasobu egzotycznych kolekcji muzealnych stanowi wycinek dokumentacji życia społeczeństw oraz ukazuje przekrojowo całokształt kultury wybranych plemion i ludów.
In 2014 the Missionary and Ethnographic Museum in Pieniężno celebrated 50th anniversary of its existence. The collector’s work done in half-a-century (not taking into consideration pre-war period) resulted in the creation of systematized and rich museum collections. The article outlines the shape of the emerging collection of exhibits, and then presents its more detailed discussion. Collected items have a missionary-ethnographic profile and culturally represent various areas of the world and various branches of material culture and art. The items are shown according to separate assortments, their number and countries of origin. Also specimens of Christian art are shown, which is an expression of the dialogue of Christianity with the cultures of local peoples. A fragment of the exotic museum collections, which are exposed for visitors, exist thanks to the missionaries themselves and they are a documentation of the lives of societies and show the overall culture of selected tribes and peoples.

Opis:: This article reviews research conducted in Warsaw’s Zoological Garden. The aim of the research was to define behavior and reactions of visitors. Examination was carried out on selected exhibitions: elephants, gorillas, jaguars, donkeys, and goats (3 newly-built and one traditional). 25 separate category of behaviors and reactions of visitors were evaluated in five social groups: F (female), F+Ch (female+child), M (male), M+Ch (male+child), and Ch (child). Behaviors and reactions were recorded in ordinal scale 0-1, and the total number of points revealed the most frequent behaviors and reactions. The results of this research indicate that there is a correlation among some behaviors and reactions, arrangement of exhibitions as well as a time of observation of displays. Another important finding was that the arrangement and the service had a great significance for increasing the attractiveness as well as educational value of an exhibition. The most interesting finding was that visitors watching modern naturalistic exhibits were making photographs of them even if the animals were hidden from their view. In general, therefore, it seems that modern naturalistic settings of animal exhibits are clearly more attractive for visitors than traditional ones.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w Miejskim Ogrodzie Zoologicznym w Warszawie. Celem badań było określenie zachowań i reakcji osób zwiedzających Ogród Zoologiczny. Do badań zostały wybrane cztery ekspozycje. Trzy nowo pobudowane: dla jaguarów, goryli i słoni oraz jedną tradycyjną ekspozycję dla osła i kóz. Do obserwacji zachowań i reakcji zwiedzających – według 25 oddzielnych kategorii – wybrano pięć grup osób: K (kobieta), K+D (kobieta z dzieckiem), M (mężczyzna), M+D (mężczyzna z dzieckiem), D (dziecko). Zachowania i reakcje oceniano w skali porządkowej 0-1, a łączna liczba punktów ujmowała najczęstsze zachowania i reakcje. Wyniki tych badań wskazują, że istnieje korelacja między aranżacją miejsc widokowych a długością czasu spędzonego przy ekspozycji. Ponadto rozmieszczenie i obsługa ma wielkie znaczenie dla zwiększenia atrakcyjności, jak również wartości edukacyjnej ekspozycji. Najciekawszym odkryciem było to, że zwiedzający fotografowali nowoczesne naturalistyczne ekspozycje nawet jeśli zwierzęta były ukryte przed ich wzrokiem. Wydaje się, że dla zwiedzających współczesne naturalistyczne ekspozycje są atrakcyjniejsze niż tradycyjne ekspozycje.

Opis:: The Kórnik Library is one of the oldest and most valuable establishments in Poland. By creating a library during the Partitions of Poland and collecting valuable old books and manuscripts, Tytus Działyński intended to save and foster Polish culture and traditions for posterity. Heir to Tytus – Jan Działyński – secured and expanded the Library. Having no heir himself, Jan Działyński left the Działyński inheritance to his nephew, Władysław Zamoyski, who continued his grandfather's and uncle's work. Just before his death, Władysław Zamoyski donated the entire inherited property to the Polish nation. In 1924, he established a Foundation meant to supervise the Library, a museum and the Institute of Dendrology. The Zakłady Kórnickie Foundation operated until 1953 when it was taken over by the Polish Academy of Sciences and has remained within its structure until today. The library continues assembling, developing and sharing its collections. The latest technologies have enabled us to provide the library and museum collections to the largest possible number of readers. The collections have been successively digitized and made available on the Digital Platform of the Kórnik Library created as part of the EU project POPC.02.03.01-IP.01-00-002/15 “Digital access to the resources of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the Library”.

Tytuł:: The touchstone of Polishness? : suffering exhibited in "New Museums" in Poland

Opis:: The article discusses the issue of suffering and martyrdom as paradigms structuring the Polish identity narrative, and confronts it with the discourses of museums in contemporary Poland. Museums, understood as "memory devices", are analysed in terms of the experience they create for the visitors through repeating, reinventing and modifying general patterns of the Polish memory and identity. Exhibitions of The Ulma Family Museum of Poles Saving Jews in World War II and The Silesian Museum in Katowice are investigated in detail, revealing different ways in which the suffering is depicted and highlighting the theme’s functions in the message conveyed.
