Opis:: Pierre Hadot’s legacy is a vision of ancient philosophy not only as a system of abstract concepts and logical procedures but as a practical philosophical methodology. A key element of this interpretation is consideration of ancient philosophical practice as a series of spiritual exercises to improve one’s own life. The present paper aims to show, more humbly, that by highlighting the aesthetic dimension of the practice of gardening we can consider it part of the set of philosophically charged spiritual exercises. Gardening supports the improvement of one’s own experience of the world through the meeting of different temporal experiences. The appropriation of such different temporal nuances in stark contrast to the accelerated pace of modern life, or periods of tiresome repetition, makes it possible to question one’s own rhythm in the world. In other words, I defend the thesis that horticulture can be considered therapeutic also from a philosophical perspective.

Opis:: The author considers the issue of time in Jan Szczepański’s works in comparison to the issue in contemporary sociology. She analyses the role of personal experiences as an important inspiration in research into the time issue. She presents the ‘fantasies’ that are typical of Jan Szczepański’s approach to the subject, and the idea of varieties of time, with the associated interdisciplinary view. She writes that Jan Szczepański understands time as a devastating force and ‘dealing with time’ in connection with transience as one of the essential human tasks.

Opis:: This paper proposes a semantic differential-based research method called Prison Time. The study with this tool was conducted on a group (N = 161) of men serving time in Polish prisons. The analysis revealed a two-factor structure accounting for 49.1% of the variance, with Cronbach’s alpha greater than 0.74. The Perceptual-Formal factor reflects formal aspects of perceiving time – pace, dynamics, and changeability. The Emotional-Valence factor captures both the emotional load and assessment related to experiencing imprisonment time. The measure is likely to be used by both academics and practitioners interested in assessing the subjective attitude to time as experienced in prison.

Opis:: The Day Reconstruction Method (DRM) is a structured diary designed to measure time use in a manner that is more valid than traditional written summary measures, but less burdensome than real-time electronic diary methods. The lower respondent burden and administration costs might make it feasible to utilize this method in large national surveys. Past studies using the DRM have generally focused on subjective mood states during different types of activities. In this study, we extended the DRM to also measure suffering from negative symptoms, such as pain and fatigue, in 122 older adults, most of whom suffer from chronic pain. Results indicated that the method was well tolerated in this population, with over 98% of the sample providing interpretable responses. Chronic pain respondents reported spending a considerable proportion of their day suffering from pain, fatigue, and depression; a much higher proportion than reported by healthy controls (p’s < .01). Time spent suffering was associated with lower income, negative mood, and lower life satisfaction and quality of life.

Opis:: During five years of extremely rapid and spontaneous development, escape rooms have become a permanent component of Polish urban space. At the same time, this form of recreation has gained a whole community of enthusiasts. The aim of the article is to present a comprehensive description of the people who visit escape rooms in Poland through an online survey including 718 users of lockme.pl, the largest promotional and booking portal in the country. The results have enabled the author to identify the socio-demographic features of the players, sources of information about escape rooms, user motivations, the frequency, character and course of visits, the emotions accompanying the game, as well as general opinions and evaluations of Polish escape rooms.

Opis:: Globalization leaves its footprint on the leisure market contributing to the global popularization of brand new forms of recreation. A perfect example of such instant diffusion of innovation on a global scale is the rapid development of escape rooms. The aim of the article is to try and explain the extraordinary popularity of escape rooms in Poland, mainly through an analysis of what they offer. The author presents the origins and development of this particular form of recreation, discusses the location of nearly 600 facilities functioning in 2016, as well as giving a detailed description of escape rooms in the ten large Polish cities. The study leads to the conclusion that the phenomenon of escape rooms stems from, among other things, the fundamental assumptions of the experience economy.

Opis:: Musical sense-making relies on two distinctive strategies: tracking the moment-to-moment history of the actual unfolding and recollecting actual and previous sounding events in a kind of synoptic overview. Both positions are not opposed but complement each other. The aim of this contribution, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive framework that provides both conceptual and operational tools for coping with the sounds. Five major possibilities are proposed in this regard: (i) the concepts of perspective and resolution, which refer to the distance the listener takes with respect to the sounding music and the fine-grainedness of his/her discriminative abilities; (ii) the continuous/discrete dichotomy which conceives of the music as one continuous flow as against a division in separate and distinct elements; (iii) the in time/outside-of-time distinction, with the former proceeding in real time and the latter proceeding outside of the time of unfolding; (iv) the deictic approach to musical sense-making, which conceives of an act of mental pointing to the music, and (v) the levels of processing, which span a continuum between primitive sensory reactivity to actual sounding stimuli and high-level symbolic processing.

Przebadana zostanie przy tej okazji postawa Lacoste’a wobec zadania myślenia, jego droga do filozofii mistyki oraz sposób, w jaki opisuje relacje między doświadczeniem mistycznym a filozoficznym. Wreszcie na koniec pojawi się pytanie o to czy mistyka u swoich źródeł jest pewnym sposobem przeżywania czasu?
Phenomenology of liturgy is the main philosophical project of Jean-Yves Lacoste, a contemporary French thinker, up to this time not well known in Poland. Liturgy is hereby understood in a broader sense, as a mode of life, which consist of facing God, understood as a subject and a promise of relationship. Therefore, it seems to be both a philosophical and mystical experience, which is why it is going to be considered here as philosophy of mysticism. The paper examines Lacoste’s undertaking of the task of thinking, his way to philosophy of mysticism, as well as the relation between philosophical and mystical experience in his thought. Finally, a question will emerge: is mysticism in its core a way of experiencing time?
