Opis:
Brackish water is an important source of water resources with lower salt content than seawater. Desalination is a very important treatment to remedy the scarcity of fresh water throughout the world. In this work, it has been proposed to desalinate brackish groundwater using a commercial nanofiltration membrane. The experiments were carried out on the basis of a factorial design using three factors and two levels of study for each variable. For this purpose, it selected the feed pressure (X1) of the membrane module at (60 and 100 psi), feed water salinity (X2) at levels of (3.4 and 6.01 mS/cm) and operating temperature (X3) at levels (20 and 28°C) to evaluate its effect on the percentage flux recovery and salt retention. The results showed that the most significant variable is the feed pressure, achieving higher flow recovery and the percentage of salinity rejection at the 100 Psi level. This showed that by increasing the pressure from (60 to 100 psi), there was a considerable increase in flow recovery (42 to 72%) and salt rejection (24.6 to 28.4%). Likewise, by increasing the temperature from 20 to 28°C, the recovered f low rate increased from (49.78 to 63.2%) and the percentage of salt separation showed an increase from 25.95 to 27.05%. Similarly, by increasing the starting conductivity of the brackish water from (3.4 to 6.01 mS/cm) the percentage of flow recovery has decreased from (61.46 to 51.525%). Likewise, the permeate flow rate increased linearly with feed pressure from 132 L/h (P=40 Psi) to 420 L/h (108 Psi). In conclusion, this research confirms the suitability of the commercial NF membrane studied for brackish water desalination.

Opis:
In statistical quality control objects are alternatively rated. It is of interest to estimate a fraction of negatively rated objects. One of such applications is a quality control provided by Supreme Chamber of Control (NIK) to find out a percentage of abnormalities in the work among others of tax offices. Mathematical details of experimental designs for alternatively rated phenomena are given in Karliński (2003). There are given requirements for sample sizes, numbers of negative rates, accuracy of estimation and error risks. In the paper, some statistical properties of given plans are investigated.

Opis:
In recent years, “fake news” has become a buzzword used to describe a variety of disinformation practices identifiable both in the traditional media, and in the digital environment. The goal of our paper is to investigate fake news, aiming at both clarifying the concept and discussing the possible integration of ideologically driven information under this large umbrella, as well as investigating conditions under which various types of fake news have the potential to go viral. In this study we consider ideologically driven news as a form of disinformation, by the mere reason that there is a clear intention to deceive behind this type of news. At the same time, we argue that, compared to no more than one-two decades ago, ideologically driven information is potentially much more harmful, by virtue of the potential of being shared, easily further disseminated within echo-chambers and with the help of filter bubbles. In line with recent studies, we contend that, at its core, the fake news problem concerns the economics of emotion, specifically how emotions are used and often abused to foster audience’s attention, engagement, and willingness to share content. In this context, and under the recent political circumstances in Romania (marked by anti-government protests and public opposition to the ruling political party), our aim is to better understand how people’s susceptibility to disseminate deceitful information is enhanced by various forms and valences of politically biased fake news, and what is the role of specific emotions in explaining this process. Bulding on Tandoc et al.’s classification of fake news, we propose a 2x2x2 experimental design, in which we manipulated intention to deceive, level of facticity and valence. The survey experiment (N=813) tests two positive (enthusiasm and contentment) and two negative (anger and fear) discrete emotions as mediators of the main effect of potential of viralisation effects (i.e. how likely users are to share fake news on a social network). Results show that negatively biased fake news enhances people’s willingness to share the news story, while positively biased fake news has no significant effect on the viralisation potential. Moreover, the potential for viralisation is mediated by negative emotions, but not by positive ones.

Opis:
Design of experiments (DOE) is an effective method providing useful information about the interaction of operating variables and the way the total system works by using statistical analyses. However, its industrial application is limited because it is almost difficult to maintain variables in DOE matrix at desired constant levels in industrial environment. Thus, this paper aims to present a new mixed modeling method which is a combination of fuzzy logic and design of experiments methods to overcome such practical limitations. The method first uses a fuzzy model which is trained by practical data gathered from industry to predict DOE response corresponding to each run in DOE matrix. Then, a statistical parametric model is constructed for the prediction of process response to any change of operating parameters under real industrial conditions. The proposed mixed method was successfully validated by using data obtained from a coal hydraulic classifier at Zarand Coal Washing Plant (Kerman, Iran). The method also seems to be a promising tool for modeling all devices and processes in real industrial environment and allows researchers to benefit from all the advantages of experimental design and fuzzy logic methods simultaneously.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the application of the method of experimental design to the analysis of electrical power distribution systems. The theory of experimental design allows us to construct and experimentally verify the qualitative model of a power distribution system in order to analyse a significance of each component in distribution system modelling. The paper presents results obtained from simulation studies on the effect of uncertain input data on the calculation of output characteristics of power distribution systems. An investigation of input data errors and their influence on systems analysis results has a particular importance in real-time modelling of power systems. The simulation experiment was carried out for the numerical model of an existing radially operated power distribution system of 15 kV

Opis:
Introduction. In recent years the irreproducibility of preclinical studies has become a serious concern in drug developmental research. The findings of preclinical studies that cannot be reproduced are a drain on public resources and slow down the drug discovery process. Among the various factors that contribute to irreproducibility in preclinical drug developmental research, poor statistical analysis and weak experimental design play a major role in the failure of drugs in clinical research. Objective. The aim of this review is to describe key factors, such as poor statistical analysis and weak experimental design, that contribute to the irreproducibility of preclinical studies in drug development, and how such studies slow down the drug development process. Brief description of the state of knowledge. The irreproducibility of preclinical research is a serious issue that researchers, especially those who are involved in drug discovery, are facing today. The irreproducibility of research drains public resources, time, and diminish the trust of the common man in the research community. The factors that contribute to the irreproducibility of preclinical research are related to experiment design and improper statistical analysis of the experimental data. Most of these factors can be eliminated by researchers developing a commitment to science and society. Conclusion. Poor experimental design and lack of knowledge or limited knowledge of statistical analysis of data contribute significantly to the irreproducibility of preclinical research. A well-designed experiment with proper statistical analysis of data conducted by committed researchers rarely fails to reproduce.

Opis:
The effect of air flow rate, pulp density and particle size was studied using central composite design for coal samples from the Lazy mine. Evaluation of column flotation tests was based on two dependant variables such as ash content and combustible matter recovery in the concentrate. The ash content in the concentrate was from 4.61 to 9.62% with the recovery of combustible matter from 17.43 to 81.98%. The ANOVA statistical analysis showed that the main effect of air flow rate has a significant impact on the combustible matter recovery and ash content in the concentrate. The main effect of pulp density on the combustible matter recovery is significant, whereas for the ash content it is not seen. There is a strong effect of the particle size on the ash content and combustible matter recovery in the concentrate. The interaction of the effect of the pulp density and particle size has a significant impact on the ash content in the concentrate.
