Opis:: The article deals with three terrorist attacks of right-wing extremists: in Norway (2011), New Zealand (2019) and Germany (2019). First, the modus operandi of perpetrators was shown and the course of each attack was analyzed. It was indicated what tactics the attackers used and why it was or was not effective. Secondly, the ideological background and motivations of the perpetrators were shown. It was possible to analyze the manifestos that the perpetrators left, and thus their way of thinking, their ideologies, and the purposes of organizing the attacks. Thirdly, issues related to the publicizing of the attacks by the perpetrators were shown. The goal of the article is to show that radical ideology of right-wing extremists (expressed in manifestos) leads to tragedies. In analyzed cases radical appointment of the perpetrators caused three deadly attacks. The article shows that the radical actions are preceded by radical speech, expressions, manifestos. The second goal is to pay attention to hate speech (also expressed in manifestos), which is just as dangerous as bullets or improvised explosive devices. The third goal is to show how the attackers used acts of terror to spread the ideologies to which they were devoted.

Opis:: Radical movements of the Polish far-right consist, as elsewhere, mainly of young men. The strict gender binarism, the exaltation of men’s power, homosociality, brotherhood, physical strength and subordination of women are omnipresent among 'angry white men' everywhere, Poland included. However, these general characteristics have always its local variants, trajectories, and particularities. This article is an attempt to explain the phenomenon of Polish radical right movements in its local context: cultural, social, economic. The article focuses on ‘The March of Independence’ – a cyclical celebration for radical groups, which proliferates the discourses of far-right radical masculinity. In the first part, the author focuses on the social and economic background, worldview and ‘masculinist’ ideology of Polish' angry white men’ (Kimmel 2013). The second part focuses on the historical and cultural coding of their 'aggrieved entitlement' (Kimmel 2013). The third part of the essay draws on Steve's Garlick (Garlick 2016: 163−193) concept of ‘spectacular masculinity’. It analyzes how modern technology contributes to the construction of ‘spectacular’ masculinity among the participants of the march/members of radical groups.
Radykalne ruchy polskiej prawicy mają zasadniczo męski charakter i grupują wielu młodych mężczyzn. Przestrzeganie podziału ról płciowych, egzaltacja męską siłą, homospołeczność, braterstwo, fizyczna sprawność podporządkowanie kobiet jako rodzicielek i gospodyń domowych to powszechne wśród "wściekłych młodych mężczyzn" nastawienie tak globalne, jak i specyficznie polskiej. Ta uogólniona charakterystyka ma swoje lokalne warianty, trajektorie i osobliwości. Artykuł stanowi próbę wyjaśnienia fenomenu popularności polskich ruchów prawicowych w lokalnym kontekściez uwzględnieniem czynników społecznych, kulturowych i ekonomicznych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono Marszowi Niepodległości - cyklicznemu świętu radykałów i dyskursowi męskości, jaki przy okazji tej celebracji jest upowszechniany. W pierwszej części przedstawiam społeczne i ekonomiczne tło procesu radykalizacji, odtwarzam poglądy i maskulinistyczną ideologię polskich "wściekłych mężczyzn". W drugiej części uwaga kieruje się ku kulturowemu i historycznemu kodowaniu "zawiedzionego poczucia uprzywilejowania" (Kimmel, 2013). Część trzecia sięga do koncepcji "męskości spektakularnej" (Garlick, 2016, 163 - 193) i analizuje sposób, w jaki nowoczesna technologia wpływa na konstruowanie męskości przez uczestników Marszów Niepodległości.

Tytuł:: Nationalism in the ideology of contemporary far right
Nacjonalizm w ideologii współczesnej skrajnej prawicy

Opis:: The article focuses on one of the core ideas of the extreme right political thought - the idea of nationalism. Conclusions about the far right understanding of nation as well as about the influence that the idea of a nation has on the political programme of the far right are drawn based on an analysis of several political and ideological programmes of far right organisations operating both in Eastern and in Western Europe. Written programmes of National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD), Austrian identitarian movement ((Identitäre Bewegung Österreich, IBÖ), the All-Polish Youth (Młodzież Wszechpolska, MW), the National Radical Camp (Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny, ONR) and Kotleba - People's Party Our Slovakia (L'udová strana - Naše Slovensko, ĽSNS) constitute the body of the research material. The first part of the article outlines the methodological aspects of studies on the extreme right. The second and main part of the article consists of the content analysis of selected materials with special focus on concepts of: nation, fatherland, patriotism and national identity included in them. The article ends with a summary, presenting nationalism as a basic idea of the far right political and a source of other radical ideas commonly ascribed to the far right.
Artykuł skupia się na jednej z głównych idei myśli skrajnie prawicowej, jaką jest nacjonalizm. Wnioski na temat rozumienia pojęcia narodu, a także wpływu idei narodu na kształt programu politycznego skrajnej prawicy, wyciągnięte zostają na podstawie analizy programów politycznych i ideowych wybranych organizacji działających zarówno w Europie Wschodniej, jak i Europie Zachodniej. Materiał badawczy stanowią programy następujących ugrupowań: Narodowodemokratycznej Partii Niemiec (NPD), austriackiego ruchu identytarystów (Identitäre Bewegung Österreich, IBÖ), Młodzieży Wszechpolskiej (MW), Obozu Narodowo-Radykalnego (ONR), a także słowackiej partii Kotleba - Partia Ludowa Nasza Słowacja (L'udová strana - Naše Slovensko, ĽSNS). Pierwsza część artykułu przybliża kwestie metodologiczne w badaniach nad ideologią skrajnej prawicy. Druga i zasadnicza część artykułu to analiza treści wybranych programów ze szczególnym naciskiem na przedstawione w nich koncepcje narodu, ojczyzny, patriotyzmu oraz tożsamości narodowej. Artykuł kończy podsumowanie, uwydatniające rolę nacjonalizmu jako idei podstawowej w myśli skrajnie prawicowej, w której źródła mają inne idee przypisywane temu prądowi myślenia o świecie społeczno-politycznym.

Tytuł:: Resisting 'leftist dictatorship'? : memory politics and collective action framing in populist far-right street protest

Opis:: This article contributes to cultural approaches to populism, focusing on the uses of memory in far-right protest politics. Conceptually, it develops a novel approach to memory politics suitable to investigate the uses of memory in grassroots mobilization by integrating scholarship on 'the politics of memory' and the 'movement-memory nexus'. Also, it argues for the conceptualization of populism as a collective action frame to explain the emergence and persistence of populist street mobilization. Methodologically, the article draws from the critical case study of the Dresden-based 'Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident' (PEGIDA), one of contemporary Europe's most sustained instances of populist far-right protest. Based on the interpretive analysis of original ethnographic data generated in demonstrations in Dresden in 2019-20, it shows how PEGIDA deploys controversial reinterpretations of regional, national, and European history to sustain the populist master frame of 'resistance against dictatorship', articulating the antagonism between 'the people' and 'the elites' as a long-standing struggle of democracy against leftist totalitarianism. Uncovering the many ways in which PEGIDA strategically mobilizes the past, the analysis emphasizes the constitutive relationship between culture and populist protest, and demonstrates the dovetailing of populist and far-right ideational elements in grassroots mobilization.

Opis:: Subject and purpose of work: This article analyzes the factors depicted in the literature as essential for the emergence of far-right parties and assesses the importance of unemployment, immigration and political establishments in the failures of the far-right wing parties in Sweden and Finland in early 2000s. Materials and methods: Multi-methods approach is used in this study including case studies and a novel technique based on Boolean algebra. Results: The findings of this paper lead to the conclusion that the correlation between unemployment rates and the electoral strength of far-right parties is weak and does not support simplistic thesis such as high unemployment leads to extremism. Moreover, despite objectively favorable conditions in terms of high immigration rates, the presence of non-European immigrants in a country does not in itself explain the emergence of far-right parties. Conclusions: The study points to the importance of political factors such as the differences between the mainstream parties and tackling the immigration issue by the Liberal Party in Sweden and the wide ideological span of the coalition government and the role of Finland’s special relationship with the USSR that militated against the emergence of far-right parties in these countries.

Opis:: The paper provides a comprehensive overview of European radical parties. The main aim of this paper is to examine whether there are common patterns regarding these parties, and to analyse the implications of this phenomenon. In order to achieve the above, the paper proceeds as follows: Firstly, the phenomenon of political radicalisation in contemporary Europe is explored. This leads to mapping the radical political landscape in Europe. Finally, the paper concludes with the analysis of the possible outcomes of radicalisation of European politics including the possible societal effects. By doing so the paper argues that a fresh theoretical approach to comprehend the phenomenon is necessary.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to describe the profile of the far right political party Jobbik, which has been an integral part of Hungary’s political scene since 2009 and the third political power in the country since 2014. The article defines the party’s ideology and presents its key proposals. The paper analyses the rhetoric of leaders and makes an attempt at describing the party’s approach towards such issues as foreign policy and historical policy, which is an important reference point for the activity of the party. Moreover, the article shows who the real voters of Jobbik are and at the same time illustrates dynamics of support development for this movement.

Opis:: November 1936 saw the blockade of the University of Warsaw, an occupational strike organised by far-right students demanding the introduction of the so-called ‘ghetto benches’ for Jewish students. This article draws a social portrait of the ordinary participants in the blockade and analyses their motivations. I argue that the socialisation of youth into exemplary citizens of a modern nation-state created a fertile ground for far-right organisations and their demands. Moreover, the largest student association, the Fraternal Aid Society, became a space for self-organisation into extreme nationalist politics. Its leaders tapped into the positive motivations of youth, i.e. the search for a sense of belonging and the desire of individuals to fit into the normative order of the community. My examination of the blockade offers a unique insight into the academic background of the far-right and its means of political mobilisation.

The presented text is an approximation of the research project that the author plans to implement in the coming years. The following text presents the main assumptions and reasons for starting research on the discussed issue, describes the purpose and subject of the research, as well as chronological turning points in their historical and socio-political aspect. The next part outlines the development of the skinheads subculture, describes the state of research on skinheads in the world and in Poland, indicating undeveloped research fields and drawing hypotheses and research sources on this basis.
