Opis:
The article considers methodological problems in the study of racist attitudes and beliefs among individuals that manifest such attitudes and beliefs and among people who experience racist behaviour. The phenomenon of racism takes different forms, but it always includes the stigmatizing traits of perceived differences in the physical appearance of a human being, leading to exclusion, discrimination and persecution. The study of racism is important because of its topicality and growing presence in various places in the world. However, the study of racism encounters serious methodological problems: firstly, related to the definition of racism, secondly, owing to the desire of respondents to be politically correct and reluctance to talk about their experiences. The situation of a researcher outsider and a researcher- insider are different, sometimes an anthropologist studying natives – both positions have advantages and disadvantages. The article concludes that the only morally transparent and efficient method for a racism researcher is the engaged study of racism.

The Shamans Curse : Maria Czaplicka and her Studies on Shamanism
Autorzy:
Kubica-Heller, Grażyna
Opis:
The present paper aims at presenting the overwiev of Maria Czaplicka's studies on shamanism, which makes a major part of her work. It is trying to elicit theoretical issues, and assess it on the background of contemporary studies of the problem. It starts with presenting Czaplicka's first book together with its conceptual foundation in the theory of religion of Robert Marett. The second part depicts shamanism as was presented in her writings and photographs resulting from her fieldwork in Siberia. The article finishes with some general ideas we can learn from Czaplicka's works. Specialists on shamanism know Czaplicka's first book quite well, but her fieldwork materials are rearly consulted. The comparison of her early study and her texts based on research show interesting development of her ideas. The research was based on various sources of information: her published texts, archival materials and collections, as well as the literature on shamanism.

Project "Ethnography as a personal experience" : history of anthropology in Poland in researchers’ point of view
Autorzy:
Wróblewski, Filip
Opis:
The text concerns the author’s project “Ethnography as a personal experience. Generational transformations in methodology and research practices”. It reveals a problematic, and partly unstable character of the strategy of constructing the identity of an anthropologist professional group. In the author’s opinion a Polish young anthropologist shows a disruption of knowledge transmission between generations as well as a discontinuity in the Polish ethnology tradition. As a result, there is a tendency in not only borrowing the theory and authority from the tradition of foreign national anthropologies, but also an uncritical transfer of discursive forms, authorizing national anthropology. In his opinion it is the most important question about contemporary shape of national anthropologies, especially Polish ethnology.

Maria Czaplicka and her Siberian expedition, 1914-1915 : a centenary tribute
Autorzy:
Kubica-Heller, Grażyna
Opis:
It was shortly before the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, when a young Pole, Maria Czaplicka, organized the predominantly female Yenisei Expedition. Czaplicka had been trained in anthropology at Oxford and was the author of the book Aboriginal Siberia, which summarized contemporary scholarship in the area (mostly Russian and Polish). Her book became a compendium for the English-speaking public interested in the region and students of shamanism. The monograph of Czaplicka’s own fieldwork was never completed, but she managed to write the interesting travelogue My Siberian Year and several articles. Apart from all her success she was also a tragic figure, struggling with personal problems and the lack of a secure academic appointment. In 1921, at the age of 37, she committed suicide. This paper presents the results of thorough archival research which throws light on Czaplicka’s background, intellectual inspirations, and other biographical details which were previously unknown. It also offers a critical overview of her work.

Aim. The aim of this paper is to depict difficulties in presenting ethnographically collected narratives - recorded and transcripted – as written texts. Multifaceted fieldwork experience when translated into form required in academic work is unavoidably reduced. It losts variety of aspects impossible to express just by written language required by academic discourse. Simultaneously written language is influencing and shaping pre-textual fieldwork experience. Method. The study is a theoretical afterthought based on the fieldwork experience gained during research concerning modes of constructing reminiscent narratives in one of lower-silesian villages in years 2013-2016.   Resullt and Conclusions. The analysis shows indispensable impact of medium of written language of process of gaining and presenting ethnographical knowledge. It presents its influence and limitations in the process of building fieldwork experience.

Opis:
Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the identities that inform our work as researchers and theorists? In contrast to recent trends towards various versions of instant or short-term ethnography (e.g., Pink and Morgan 2013) this paper argues for the merits of “slow” ethnography by examining the advantages of relational patience, perspectival patience, and the patience required to fully appreciate omissions, rarities, and secrets of the group.

Opis:
This article concerns a fragment of research interests of the ethnographer from Lodz – professor Jaworska. In fact, Jaworska neither created the methodological theory of doing an ethnographical field research in a rural socio-cultural context nor the special theory connected with rural study, despite the fact that the most important area for her (in terms of science as well as her personal interests) were the Carpathian villages and the type of pastoral economy. The author of the text analyzes the letters of Jaworska written over 40 years, which reflect Jaworska’s attitude to her mountain field work carried out there as well as to the area itself.

This short reflection on ethnographic research with forced migrants who arrived in Poland after February 24, 2022, addresses topics that are crucial in designing a research project in cooperation with people who fled from Ukraine. Issues related to research ethics, the situation of difficult research in cooperation with potentially traumatised people, positioned by popular discourses as refugees and victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are explored here. In addition, my reflection concerns access to the site, the researcher’s involvement and responsibility, the specificity of the research situation, as well as problems and challenges facing their archiving and representation. I indicate research risks such as revictimisation, lack of psychological tools and burdens of the researcher, and the further life of constructed ethnographic knowledge that is built on the experience of war migrants from Ukraine. This reflection text also includes some practical advice on designing conversations with war migrants from Ukraine. In addition to the indicated challenges of ethnographic research in cooperation with forced migrants from Ukraine, the paper contains an appeal for a radical increase in ethical standards in a situation of war and forced migration.

Three-dimensional stratigraphy reconstruction and GIS - postprocessing issues in archaeological field 3D documentation

Opis:
This paper aims to present the results of experiments which allowed us to propose up-to-date method of 3D visual representation of explored archaeological layers. Considering the destructive nature of excavations, the correct documentation of an exploration, which offers an insight both into the decision-making process taking place on site, and into the most faithful representation of the examined material, presents a fundamental challenge for a field archaeologist. The aim of the experiments presented here was to test three methods of creating 3D models of successive archaeological layers (contexts) recorded during an exploration. The presented findings show that the method of editing point clouds using open-source software prior to importing the model of the reconstruction of the explored layer into GIS software, is the best solution from the point of view of both the effort and time required, and it can definitely be suggested as the standard procedure of creating the graphical bases for an archaeological database.

Opis:
The article examines the narrative of the diary „My Siberian Year” written by one of the first women-anthropologists-Maria Czaplicka. There is a notable absence of discussion about her achievements, despite the fact that her book significantly exceeds the frames of the anthropological narrative of her times. In this paper the perspective refers to the experience of strangeness/otherness as a constitutive part of any fieldwork. This category may be analyzed within different dimensions, which concurrently shed light on the nature of the relationships between people, culture and environment.
