Opis:
Fig mosaic virus (FMV) and Fig badnavirus-1 (FBV-1) are two of the most important fig infecting viruses. The incidence and distribution of FBV-1 and FMV were determined by testing in PCR 138 asymptomatic and symptomatic samples. These samples were collected from 60 fig gardens and agricultural fields in three provinces of Iran. The fig infecting viruses FBV-1 and FMV, respectively, were detected in 92 (66.6%) and 34 (24.6%) samples collected from all the surveyed fields. Overall, 24 out of 138 (17.3%) samples showed mixed infections. The sequence analysis of a genomic fragment of 922 nt, comprising the entire ORF-2 and part of the 5’ termini of the ORF-3 of 10 selected FBV-1 Iranian isolates from different provinces, and of the type member from GenBank (Acc. No: JF411989), showed a variation ranging from 1 to 3% at nucleotide level and 1% at the amino acid level. The phylogenetic analysis grouped the FBV-1 isolates into two groups, with the Iranian isolates clustered in two distinct subgroups of group I, according to their geographical origin. In our research, the prevalence and sequence analysis of FBV-1 as the only identified DNA virus infecting fig trees, was studied for the first time in Iran.

Opis:
Mike Figgis tells Maria Pudłowska of the multifaceted character of his work (he is a director, musician, photographer, cinematographer and audio-visual installation artist), of the development of his theatre and film career, and his masters. Figgis also speaks about what he thinks is the key issue in his work, i.e. image recording technology (he created a special camera stabilisation rig called Fig Rig for his film Hotel) and about advantages of digital camera that makes the motion picture a more democratic medium.

Opis:
Due to their soft texture consumers prefer moist figs, which has motivated fig processors to increase the production of this product. However, as water enhances the browning reaction rate, moisture content optimisation of moist figs is very im- portant. Processed figs must have suitable texture softness with browning kept to a minimum. The purpose of this study was to exa- mine the effect of moisture content on the textural attributes of dried figs. Hardness, compression energy, gradient, gumminess and chewiness of fig samples decreased with moisture content exponentially, whereas the trend of springiness and cohesiveness with change of moisture content was nearly constant. Moreover, in the texture profile analysis plot of rehydrated figs, the presence of negative area is an indication of adhesiveness which was zero in control dried figs. The results of the texture profile analysis tests proved the existence of a critical moisture content of about 18.4%, above which no significant effect of moisture content on textural parame- ters was found. The glass-rubber transition results from differential scanning calorimeter may explain the different texture profile analysis attributes of dried figs compared with rehydrated figs.

Opis:
Modern technologies and accurate information on genetic diversity and structure are contributing to improve the plant breeding, in particular for all the minor species with a lack of data. Genetic diversity of 139 different Ficus carica L. genotypes collected from Italy and Croatia, and divided into two subgroups: uniferous (only main crop) and biferous (breba and main crop), was investigated using 49 microsatellite markers. A total of 70 alleles were generated, of which 64 (91.4%) showed a polymorphic pattern indicating high level of genetic diversity within the studied collection. The mean heterozygosity over the 64 single locus microsatellites was 0.33 and the expected and observed averaged variance were 16.50 and 184.08, respectively. The 139 fig genotypes formed two clusters in the PCoA analysis, suggesting a division between Italian and Croatian genotypes. Moreover, the fig accessions could be divided into two main clusters based on the STRUCTURE analysis according to the biological type, uniferous or biferous, with partly overlapping varieties. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that molecular markers were able to discriminate among genotypes and useful for the authentication of fig tree varieties (homonymies and synonymies).

Opis:
In order to enhance the contribution of fig to the national economy and to raise farmers’ income level, it is necessary to encourage further cultivation of fig and direct farmers to fig production instead of alternative products. Most of the areas suitable for chestnut production are forestlands. There are orchards arranged with oak and chestnut trees with oak being predominant. Chestnut population in these areas should be increased. Cultivation area of this product that has many fields of use needs to be extended. Directing farmers to products that are storable in medium term with a broad market and high income is important both for the national economy and the farmers. The purpose of the present study is to remind producers the significance of two important products: fig and chestnut in the Kosk district of the Aydin province, Turkey, and to determine the areas suitable for growing these products within the study area. For this purpose the questioning and analysis features of GIS was employed. In this study, rainfall, temperature, soil texture, slope, elevation, wind direction, were taken into account to identify appropriate fields. As a result, approximately area of 13886 hectare of fig production and 3430.7 hectare of chestnut production were found as suitable area.

Opis:
Mentions about the death of Judas Iscariot, presented as a negative figure because of handing Jesus over to death, can be found in the Holy Scriptures, in the Gospel of St. Matthew and in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as in biblical literature. According to the most widespread opinion, the apostle committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree whose name was not specified. Apocrypha, various legends and tradition mention representatives of at least seven genera of trees, which, incidentally, have medicinal properties, although it is difficult to pinpoint the species. In an attempt to determine it, selected trees were presented and the possibilities of using them as a tool for the execution of Judas were discussed, discussing in turn: the size and shape of the tree, its area of occurrence and symbolism.

Opis:
The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of different package types and ozone treatments on post-harvest quality of figs. Three different package types (classical-type, modified atmosphere –MAP, consumer-type) and different ozone treatments (0, 5, 10 and 15 minutes) were used in experiments. Purple figs grown in Tekkeköy town of Samsun province were used as the experimental material of the study. Fruits harvested at optimum harvest period were subjected to pre-cooling for a day and then stored in a cold storage at 4°C temperature and 85–90% relative humidity. At the beginning of cold storage and each week of storage, fruits removed from the storage were subjected to weight loss, water soluble dry matter content, titratable acidity, wrinkle, leakage, mold spots, peeling and degustation analyses. Current findings revealed that MAP and 10 or 15-minute ozone treatments had positive impacts on weight loss prevention in figs. While there were not significant differences in other characteristics of treatments, 10 and 15-minute ozone treatments retarded mold spots and leakage in consumer and modified packages.
