Opis:
One of the objectives of gun propellant research is to develop green formulations of gunpowder that should be less temperature sensitive than the current gun propellant. The temperature sensitivity of these new green formulations of the propellant should be measured to identify the less temperature sensitive green formulations. However, there are deficiencies in the methodologies for the measurement of the temperature sensitivity of gun propellants. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to fill the gap by establishing a method for the measurement of the temperature sensitivity of deterred gun propellants by closed vessel tests. The temperature sensitivity of the burning rate of ball propellants and the temperature coefficients of gun performance were determined using closed vessel tests and ballistic firing, respectively. Specific definitions of temperature sensitivity and temperature coefficients were evaluated. The relation between these parameters has never been explicitly investigated previously. Assessing the temperature sensitivity of propellants by closed vessel tests is of added value to the range of ballistic tests if the results of these tests can be well correlated to the results of ballistic firings. Therefore, a comparison between both parameters was made. A correspondence has been observed between the temperature sensitivity of the propellant burning rate, as obtained from closed vessel tests, and the temperature coefficients as obtained from ballistic firings.

Opis:
The effect of the initial temperature on the mechanical properties of spherical single base gun propellant was investigated by means of a compression test, which consisted of compression of a propellant bed conditioned at various initial temperatures. Following this mechanical treatment, the pressed grains (after thermal conditioning at ambient temperature) were tested in a closed vessel. The results from the combination of compression and closed vessel tests supported the assumption that there are two phenomena occurring inside the cartridge at low temperatures which compensate each other; the first is a decrease in the burning rate as the initial temperature is decreased, and the second is grain fracturing occurring on ignition. Additionally, a specific parameter, the specific surface area, turns out to be an appropriate parameter for quantifying the mechanical damage to the propellant grain resulting from the compression test. Tests on the aged propellant have also been conducted.

Opis:
The article presents the alternative use of termite mound soils (TMSs) as full replacement for clay soils in brick production. TMSs from two localities, Jawaj and Sene, in Ethiopia were investigated for bricks production. The TMSs samples contained high SiO2 and Al2O3. The TMSs bricks were fired at different temperatures from 500 to 1,000°C. The obtained mean compressive strengths (σ), 18 and 14 MPa, were observed for bricks made from TMSs from Jawaj and Sene, respectively, at the optimum firing temperature of 700°C. The σ of TMSs bricks decreased as the firing temperature increased above 700°C, while for conventional clay soil brick, the σ increased with temperature beyond 700°C. The water absorptions and saturation coefficients of fired TMSs bricks decreased with increased firing temperature. The TMSs bricks meet the standard specification of dimension tolerance only along the height. All the TMSs bricks made from the two localities were not efflorescent. TMSs from Jawaj and Sene sites can be used as a raw material to replace the long-used clay soils for bricks production as a construction material for houses construction in rural and urban areas.

Opis:
The firearm firing-ignition system performs firing and ignites a bullet propellant to produce diverse outputs. The objectives of this study were to extract various performance parameters characterizing the firearm firing-ignition system and to study the system output performance. The firing pins, primers, and cartridge cases were used as test objects, and a method for testing the diverse output performance of the firearm firing-ignition system is proposed based on the real assembly relationship of firearms. The pressure output patterns and flame characteristics were analyzed under different operating conditions and ambient temperatures. With increasing firing energy, the pressure start time and peak arrival time of the firearm firing-ignition system output decreased, whereas the length of the flame output generally increased. The flame duration was positively correlated with the firing energy. The development of the shape and temperature of the flame output could be categorized into four stages, where the maximum flame length of 60-70 mm occurred during the third stage and the highest temperature of 1218 ℃ was reached during the second stage. This study resolves the problem that the firearm firing–ignition system has a variety of outputs but only a single characterization parameter (the primer sensitivity) and engineering practice fails to quantitatively evaluate the system output performance.

Opis:
The paper deals with the impact of co-firing biomass with coal in boilers on the dew point of the flue gas. Co-firing of biomass may have twofold implications on corrosion and fouling, which are the processes that determine the lowest acceptable flue gas outlet temperature and as a result, boiler efficiency. Both phenomena may be reduced by co-firing of usually low sulphur biomasses or enhanced due to increased moisture content of biomass leading to increased water dew point. The present study concerns the problem of low-temperature corrosion in utility boilers. The paper gives (in the form of diagrams and equations) a relationship between water dew point and moisture content of fuel mixture when co-firing coal and various biomasses. The regression analysis shows that despite significant differences in the characteristics of coals and these of additional fuels, which are planned for co-firing in large-scale power boilers, the water dew point can be described by a function given with the accuracy, which shall be satisfactory for engineering purposes. The discussion of the properties of biofuels indicates that the acid dew point surplus over the water dew point ([delta]tr = tr -twr) is not likely to exceed 10 K when co-firing biomass. The concluding remarks give recommendations for the appropriate operation of boilers in order to reduce risks associated with biomass co-combustion.

Opis:
The paper presents applications of IR thermography measurements for detection of defects, particularly surface and/or subsurface ones and in order to determine a temperature field on external surfaces of graphite nozzles composed of pyrographite insert and a body optionally made of pyrographite or polycrystalline graphite saturated by pyrolytic carbon. These nozzles were designated to use in propulsion systems of antiaircraft short-range missiles GROM and STRZAŁA-2M. Temperature distributions (temperature fields) on external surfaces of tested nozzles were determined during static firing tests with the use of oxy-acetylene blow-pipe in the initial stage of investigations and in a final stage of tests, the temperature fields were measured during static firing of solid sustaining rocket propellants in thick-walled rocket motor chambers. IR thermography measurements of a temperature were verified using thermocouples.
