Opis:
We provide a detailed analysis of a unifying theoretical framework for innovation and corporate dynamics that encompasses the Gibrat’s Law of Proportionate Effect and the Simon growth process as particular instances. The predictions of the model are derived in terms of (i) firm size distribution, (ii) the distribution of firm growth rates, and (iii-iv) the relationships between firm size and the mean and variance of firm growth rates. We test the model against data from the worldwide pharmaceutical industry and find its predictions to be in good agreement with empirical evidence on all four dimensions. Our unifying stochastic framework can also be used to describe corporate dynamics in different industries and as a benchmark for discriminating among alternative data generating processes.

Opis:
A extensive body of literature is devoted to the production of mobility measures based on transition matrices. The applications often involve panel data, and yet the impact of demographic events on enterprise mobility is not considered. The article aims provide a definition of enterprise mobility, in terms of the capability to create or liquidate jobs. Moreover, some existing mobility measures are modified so that they also take into account newborn and exiting firms. The proposed index has all the relevant basic properties which make it a rigorous descriptive statistics. The mobility of Italian capital-owned enterprises in the years 2010 2017 is analysed in the case study. What we propose may be an alternative tool for practitioners to measure the degree of mobility in the presence of demographic events. It may be considered an initial step in future research regarding its different applications (e.g. labour market flows or movements among income classes), also considering more complex theoretical backgrounds.

Opis:
PURPOSE: The aim of the paper is to analyse the importance of both internal capabilities (resources) and external information sources in implementing product, process, marketing and organizational innovations aiming to maximize firm competitive advantage and create value for stakeholders. Furthermore, in particular, we examine the role of public organizations, business networks, firm size, and the industry sector, in the emergence of different types of product, process, marketing, and organizational innovations. The research was based on the typology of innovation (product, process, marketing, and organizational) adopted by the OECD. METHODOLOGY: The paper is based on data from 389 SMEs located in Finland and describes the development of a model for testing the factors that increase the innovativeness of SMEs. The logistic regression model is used as a methodology. Findings: The results show that the creation of novel products, processes and marketing innovation is connected to various external sources of information, such as fairs, the media and the internet. Moreover, the relationship between internal capabilities such as the firm’s know-how increases the marketing and organizational innovativeness of SMEs. Our results demonstrated that the creation of product innovation is positively connected to manufacturing. Furthermore, we find that the creation of novel processes and organizational innovation is related to firm size, such that firms with fewer than 20 employees (smallest firms) were concentrated among non-innovators and companies with more than 20 employees were concentrated among innovators. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: The contribution of our study is to analyse to what extent various types of innovation rely on specific information sources. This study also provides suggestions for practice and policymakers. Contrary to expectations regarding our findings, public support organizations were not statistically significant in any innovation model. Therefore, public support organizations should develop better mechanisms to find SMEs with strong motivations to develop new products and market opportunities. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: This paper provides a new and topical viewpoint for the literature by examining the possible factors explaining the increase in SMEs’ likelihood of implementing product, process, marketing, and organizational innovations. Our study provides comprehensive information on how different stakeholders contribute to the emergence of SME innovation.

Opis:
Research background: The differences in the legal structures, tax rates, and cultural-linguistic issues of various countries have always been a significant concern for SMEs in their exporting activities and internationalization processes. However, since firm-level characteristics might provide some advantages or disadvantages in their operations, their perceptions of export impediments might vary across size, age, and sector groups. Purpose of the article: This paper investigates the perceptions of export impediments by 408 larger-smaller, older-younger, and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian SMEs in a country-based perspective. Methods: The researchers use the random sampling method to create research samples and employ an internet-mediated questionnaire to collect the research data. The researchers use both Independent Sample T-test and ANOVA analyses to find differences between size, age, and sector groups. Findings & value added: While the differences exist between the perceptions of Slovakian larger-smaller and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing SMEs regarding cultural differences, the perceptions of legal and tax-related export impediments by SMEs do not differ depending on their age, size, and sector. This paper contributes to the literature by confirming various perceptions of SMEs in different countries and different characteristics regarding export obstacles and providing an entity-specific and international scope that policymakers and SMEs can benefit from. Awareness of the policymakers regarding the results of this paper that includes differences and similarities in SMEs' perceptions of export barriers might make them have close interactions with SMEs to reduce SMEs' concerns regarding their export risks. On the other hand, SMEs that are aware of the results of this paper can be more interested in having a broader network that includes close relationships not only with intermediary firms, but also with governments to overcome the export impediments.

Opis:
This article focuses on the existence of power laws in the firm-size distribution in Poland. Specifically, we empirically test whether the size distribution of companies in Poland has the characteristics of Zipf ’s law, a special case of power law observed in many different contexts in empirical economic literature. Our analysis uses 2019 data on the 2,000 largest companies in Poland as ranked by the Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper in its “Lista 2000” (Top 2,000 List). We reviewed theoretical mechanisms generating power laws and used several estimators of the power-law exponent in our empirical analysis. Our results confirm statistically significant deviations from Zipf ’s law in the firm-size distribution in Poland. We found evidence that the power law cannot satisfactorily approximate the sales-based distribution of firms.

Opis:
The determinants of earnings management is a widely studied area which provides understanding of managerial behavior to investors and regulators. This study aims to provide empirical evidence regarding the effect of managerial ownership, leverage and firm size on earnings management. The sample in this study is manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). The analysis technique used is multiple linear regression analysis method with SPSS version 20. The results of this study indicate that managerial ownership and leverage affect earnings management. But the size of the company has no effect on earnings management. This result implies the importance of restrictions in the company over managerial ownership and high leverage to avoid earnings management in the company.
Wynik ten wskazuje na znaczenie ograniczeń w firmie w zakresie własności menedżerskiej i dużej dźwigni w celu uniknięcia zarządzania zyskami w firmie.

Opis:
We examine return predictability with machine learning in 46 stock markets around the world. We calculate 148 firm characteristics and use them to feed a repertoire of different models. The algorithms extract predictability mainly from simple yet popular factor types—such as momentum, reversal, value, and size. All individual models generate substantial economic gains; however, combining them proves particularly effective. Despite the overall robustness, the machine learning performance depends heavily on firm size and availability of recent in-formation. Furthermore, it varies internationally along two critical dimensions: the number of listed firms in the market and the average idiosyncratic risk limiting arbitrage.

Opis:
This research offers a thorough examination of the consequences of financial distress, operational distress, lending interest rate, firm size, and inflation on the telecommunications industry. The analysis is limited to the ten largest companies in Asia by market capitalization from 2013 to 2022. By doing so, this study provides significant contributions to the understanding of the unique dynamics of financial distress in this crucial sector and time period. Utilizing secondary data from Asian stock exchanges, the research adopts a quantitative methodology. The correlation between the independent and dependent variables is investigated through the utilization of logistic regression. A decline in lending interest rates is associated with a greater likelihood that businesses will experience financial distress, whereas an increase in inflation is linked to the same risk. During 2013-2022, the findings also indicate that financial distress in the largest telecommunications companies in Asia was not substantially impacted by operational risk, financial risk, or firm size.
Niniejsze badanie analizuje wpływ ryzyka finansowego, ryzyka operacyjnego, stopy procentowej kredytów, wielkości firmy i inflacji na trudności finansowe w 10 firmach telekomunikacyjnych o największym kapitale w Azji w latach 2013-2022.
