Opis:
Adhesion is one of the reasons for limiting the use of thermally sprayed coatings. Many factors influence the adhesion of thermally sprayed coatings, for example: quality of the workmanship of surface preparation, method of thermal spraying, processing parameters, and the temperature of the preliminary preheat substrate, properties of the substrate and coating materials. Another one is the surface roughness. Attempts are made to use surface roughness parameters (e.g. Ra, Rz, Rq, Rku, Rsk) for prediction of adhesion of thermally sprayed coatings. However, most often these attempts end in failure. This article discusses the task of assessing the linear correlation between the twelve parameters of roughness or material ratio of various surface profiles and strength bond of coatings. For analysis, the following parameters were selected: Rz, Ra, Rq, Rsk, Rt, RSm, Rp, Rv, Rku, Rmr (50%), Rk, Rpk, Rvk. The steel substrates (S185) were machined by abrasive machining. The surface roughness of the steel substrate ranged Rz = 1.89-5.34 mm. Nickel-based coatings were applied by flame spraying by the Casto Dyn DS 8000 torch. Adhesion of coatings was measured by pull – off method. The flame sprayed coatings were characterized by adhesion to the steel substrate in the range of from 5.53 MPa to 8.28 MPa. The highest value of the correlation coefficient (Pearson – R)between parameters Rp, Rpk, and adhesion of thermally sprayed coatings were found. The coefficient R was equalto the 0.83, and the coefficient of determination R2 = 0.7. The lowest value of the correlation coefficient was found for the Rku roughness parameter amounting to 0.37. In the measurements carried out, it can be concluded that the prediction of adhesion of the coatings according to the roughness of the substrate, should be carried out by use the parameters characterizing the peaks height of roughness profile.

Opis:
The Ni-5%Al alloy and Ni-5% Al-Al2O3 composite coatings were obtained by a flame spraying method, “Casto- Dyn DS 8000” torch was used. The coatings onto a substrate made of austenitic stainless steel (X5CrNi18-10) were sprayed. The coatings were subjected to turning, burnishing and grinding. The evaluation of corrosion properties were based on the measurements of direct current (potentiodynamic method) and the alternating current (EIS method). Corrosion tests were performed in a 3.5% sodium chloride solution. On the basis of studies, the effect of finishing type on the corrosion properties of flame sprayed coatings has been demonstrated. The lowest corrosion current density was found for Ni-5%Al coatings after burnishing, icorr value equal to 0.76 μA/cm2, and the charge transfer resistance was 31063 Ω/cm2. The lowest resistance to corrosion of grinded Ni-5%Al-Al2O3 composite coatings was observed. These coatings were characterized by the following parameters of corrosion process: icorr = 14.01 μA/cm2, Rct = 3260 Ω/cm2. Burnishing caused increased corrosion resistance of both coatings. Due to reduced roughness and waviness are obtained reduction of the area of the actual burnished coatings compared to turned coatings. Thus, it is resulting in reduced values of corrosion current density. After finishing treatment, the thermally sprayed Ni-5%Al-15%Al2O3 coatings characterized by lower corrosion resistance compared to the alloy coating. The presence of the reinforcing phase in the coating promotes the increase of the porosity. Burnishing does not cause a significant change in porosity of the coating. The flame sprayed coatings on nickel-based have a tendency to localized corrosion in seawater environment.

Opis:
The flame sprayed coatings are characterized by porosity, oxide inclusions presence and large real area of surface. In order to obtain adequate surface roughness coatings must be applied finishing. For this purpose, the turning and grinding are used. In the paper a burnishing to finishing flame sprayed coatings was proposed. Burnishing is not used during the processing of thermally sprayed coatings, as is commonly believed that this technology causes damage to coatings. The process of flame sprayed is a technology affordable and easy to implement. It does not require great skill of the operator. This method is not associated with expensive workstation equipment. It may therefore be used with success for the regeneration of machine parts by the crew of vessel engine room. Coatings of Ni-5% Al and Ni-5%Al-15%Al2O3 obtained by powder flame spraying were studied. Torch of "Casto-Dyn 8000" was used. After turning the average value of surface coatings roughness coefficient Ra =2.59 mi m (for Ni- 5%Al) mi m and Ra = 3.1mi m (for composite coating) was obtained. SRMD burnishing tool produced by "Yamato" company was used. Roller burnishing was performer on turning lathe. It was found that the increase in burnishing force and the reduction of burnishing speed and feed rate of less roughness of coatings are obtained. For Ni-5%Al coatings the lowest surface roughness, Ra = 0.3mi m was obtained after burnishing with the following parameters: the force - 1100 N, burnishing speed - 28m/min, feed - 0.08 mm/rev. During burnishing of Ni-5% Al-15% Al2O3 coatings applied force 700 N, Ra = 1.31 mi m was obtained. Greater burnishing force caused coatings damage. Burnishing compared to turning has positive influence on the curve shape of the material ratio. It was found that the parameters Rk and Rpk were reduced.

Opis:
In the present work, thermally sprayed tungsten carbide-based coatings deposited by methods of high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) and also flame spraying (FS) combined with surface flame melting (SFM) were studied. Different powders and spraying systems were used to evaluate abrasive wear resistance of thermally sprayed coatings. Steel Wheel Abrasion Test (SWAT) has been applied to test setup for three-body abrasion. The wear rates were sensitive to the microstructure of the coatings. Studied coatings show wear behavior depending on the bond strength of carbide particles to the binder and also the size of carbides and type of binder. Relatively uncomplicated application and good abrasive resistance of deposited coatings are the main factors that contribute to implementation of SFM method into practice.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to obtain a thick protective cermet coating on API 5L (carbon steel) pipes, used in the oil industry. A new method involving flame spray coating has been selected to produce thick ceramic-metal coatings of Ni-Al/MgO-ZrO2 under optimal spraying parameters. Structural properties were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Morphology was determined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elemental composition in the cermet coating was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Deposition efficiency was found to be an important factor as demonstrated by adhesion force results obtained using the pull-out tensile test. The results show that the best spray distance is 20 cm, as it ensures good interaction between the layers, a high adhesion force value of 8.4 MPa, a uniform microstructure, low porosity, a hardness of 166.4 HV, and a coating thickness of approximately 1.85 mm. X-ray results clearly show that the cermet coating consists of numerous phases, such as tetragonal (T), monoclinic, and face center cubic (FCC). SEM images revealed that the typical particle-containing microstructures consisted of spherical shapes with elongated agglomerations. Finally, based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that flame spray coating provides a significant improvement in performance.
