Opis:
During the dewatering process, centrate is produced, which is returned to the beginning of the technological system. The quality of the resulting centrate, and therefore the size of the returned load of pollutants, affects the demand for electricity in the process of biological wastewater treatment. The following study presents the results of centrate quality tests at five wastewater treatment plants located in Poland. The dependence between suspended solids content and ammonia and COD concentrations in the centrate was determined. It was estimated that an increase in the overall suspended solids leads to an increase in COD by about 1.15 kgCOD/kgTSS. No correlation was found between TSS concentration and ammonia. It was calculated that the complete elimination of suspended solids from the sludge would reduce the electricity consumption for all five objects by about 535 MWh/y.

Opis:
Herbal pharmaceutical industrial wastewater contains a high amount of suspended solids and alkaline (pH > 8); therefore it requires approprite coagulant and flocculant compounds for its wastewater treatment. The most widely used flocculant is a synthetic that has certain problems such as non-biodegradability and releases of toxic residual monomers. The use of eco-friendly flocculants as alternative materials for conventional flocculant in water and wastewater treatments is increasing. Numerous factors influence the performance of coagulation-flocculation process, such as coagulant dosage, flocculant dosage, initial potential of hydrogen (pH) and velocity gradient of coagulation-flocculation. The main aim of this research is to evaluate the capability and effectiveness of Moringa oleifera extract for removal of suspended solid in herbal pharmaceutical industry. A coagulation-flocculation test was done by performing jar test at various speeds, according to the variation of the conducted treatment research. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) approach was used to optimize the concentration of coagulant dosage, flocculant dosage and flocculation velocity gradient (G), and the results were measured as maximum percentage of suspended solid removal. The wastewater used in this research originally came from the inlet of herbal pharmaceutical industry wastewater treatment plant, which was collected over 3 days. The wastewater has a total suspended solids of more than 1250 mg/L, and was alkaline (pH 9–10). The moringa extract was made from the extraction of a fat free moringa powder with a salt solution in a certain ratio. The percentage removal of suspended solid was 93.42–99.54%. The final results of the analysis of response surface showed that the variables of flocculant dosage and the flocculation velocity gradient (G) have a huge impact on the amount of suspended solid removal, compared with the coagulant dosage. The model generated from the response analysis is a quadratic model. The optimum point of the removal suspended solid quadratic model is at 10.6566 mg/L alum dosage, 13.8185 ml/L Moringa oleifera extract dosage, and G velocity of flocculation 84.845 sec-1.

Opis:
The results of an experimental research on dewatering of dump suspensionfrom the DECANTER centrifuge are presented in this paper. The suspension was taken from one of mines of the Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa. This research allowed one to determine so called filtration parameters needed for the modeling of pressure filtration with cake compression. Some physical properties (density, mass fractions, moisture content, porosity, resistance of filter medium) as well as the kinetic constant coefficients (K and K') were concerned. The data was collected for the original suspension, i.e. liquid from the DECANTER centrifuge, and for the suspension with an addition of Magnafloc 919, flocculant used for flotoconcentrate, in the amount range between 10÷80 g/1 Mg of dry product, while the used dosage is 30 g/1 Mg. It was found that the addition of flocculant caused the increase of cake porosity and cake compressibility coefficient calculated according to the Tiller and Leu equation. Simultaneously, in small extends, the addition of flocculant resulted in increased cake's moisture content after the pressure filtration which is an unfavorable effect. On the other hand, it increased the constant kinetic coefficients K and K' in comparable conditions, enlarged mean arithmetic diameter of grains and accelerated the sedimentation process. The dosage of 30 g/1 Mg used by the maintenance personnel appears to be correct as well as the used filter cloth PT 912. One of the most interesting conclusion from this work is that the cake moisture content was lower after the pressure filtration than after the centrifuge filtration - this observation applies to the original dump suspension as well as to the one with the addition of flocculant. It is worth to emphasize that in case of the flocculant addition between 10÷30 g/1 Mg, Magnafloc 919 significantly influenced filtration properties of dump suspension. In case of the addition above 30 g/1 Mg that influence became very weak, therefore the application of the excessive addition is pointless from thetechnical point of view. The comparison of filtration parameters for dump suspension without and with the addition of flocculant suggests that there should not be any operating difficulties with the filtration process after a change of dewatering technology based on the usage of a settling tank for the dump suspension, recirculation of clear liquid and mixing of sludge with flotoconcentrate. One of advantages of this solution is the water - sludge circulation closure but it is connected with a greater DECANTER centrifuge load or with the addition of a supplementary centrifuge to the system.

Opis:
Ultrafine montmorillonite particles are the main clay minerals in industrial wastewater. In order to explore the flocculation performance and mechanism of flocculant with montmorillonite, the effects of nonionic polyacrylamide (NPAM) dosage and molecular weight on flocculation effect were studied using a flocculation sedimentation experiment. The morphology of flocs was observed by metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope, and the microscopic adsorption mechanism was studied utilizing density functional theory (DFT). The results show that the best reagent system for the montmorillonite sample is that the molecular weight of NPAM is 14 million and the added amount is 100 g/t. The floc size increases with rising NPAM dosage, forming a unique multi-level compact space network structure through polymer bridging. The adsorption energy of acrylamide on the Na-(001) surface of montmorillonite is -108.81 kJ/mol, which is significantly higher than -50.66 kJ/mol on the None-(001) surface. Hydrogen bonding is not the main reason for the adsorption of acrylamide on the montmorillonite surface. NPAM mainly causes the flocculation and sedimentation of montmorillonite through the processes of polymer bridging and electrostatic attraction. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of new flocculants.

Opis:
High concentrations of fine-grained clay minerals in tailings water are highly detrimental to environmental protection and water recycling. Using kaolinite as the study subject, this research investigates the effects of various cationic surfactants (DDA, DTAB, TTAB, CTAB) and flocculants (APAM, NPAM, CPAM) on the sedimentation of kaolinite particles. The study explores the impact of single agents, combined agents, and the sequence of their addition on kaolinite particle sedimentation. The results indicate that when using individual agents at low concentrations, CTAB outperforms TTAB, DTAB, and DDA, while APAM is more effective than NPAM and CPAM. The optimal performance is achieved with a CTAB concentration of 2×10-4 mol/L and an APAM dosage of 20 mg/L. When combining agents, the best results are observed when CTAB is added before APAM. By fixing the APAM dosage at 20 mg/L and varying the CTAB concentration, the highest sedimentation rate and lowest turbidity are obtained at a CTAB concentration of 1.5×10-4 mol/L. Mechanistic insights were obtained through aggregate imaging, area measurement, zeta potential testing, and contact angle testing. Cationic surfactants alter the surface properties of particles, reducing surface electronegativity and increasing hydrophobicity, which diminishes inter-particle repulsion and promotes aggregation, thereby reducing turbidity. Flocculants form larger flocs through adsorption and bridging, accelerating the sedimentation process. When flocculants and cationic surfactants are used together, the resulting flocs are more stable and larger, with an average floc area reaching 5017.6079 μm2, indicating a significant reduction in fine particles within the solution.

Opis:
This study aimed to determine the effects of three different high molecular weight (HMW) flocculants (anionic, cationic and non-ionic flocculants) on the fine particles removal from natural stone (foid-bearing rock) processing plant wastewater at alkaline pH conditions. The test results were investigated in terms of turbidity values depending on pH of the medium, flocculant concentration and time (0–60 min). According to the results obtained, the turbidity values of the wastewater in the absence of the flocculants were pH dependent and decreased as the pH increased, resulted in the minimum turbidity values at pH 12. In the presence of the flocculants, the pH depended turbidity removal efficiencies varied with flocculant type, flocculant concentration and time. The best results were obtained at highly alkaline pH values (pH 12) with the turbidity removal efficiency of ≤99% in the presence of non-ionic flocculant. In the case of anionic and cationic flocculants, the minimum turbidity values were also obtained at pH 12 with turbidity removal efficiencies over 90%.

In the paper experimental results dealing with centrifugal filtration of postdecantation dump suspension after the DECANTER centrifuge and obtained in a coal mine of "Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa". Magnaflog-919 flocculant, used by operating service, was added to suspension. The suspension is characterized by very fine grainsize increasing during subsequent cycles, what leads, in consequence, to its replacement. This is connected not only with water and deposition costs but also with the losses of solid phase which is about 81% coal. In the mentioned coal mine 30 g of dry Magnaflog-919 flocculant per 1 Mg of dry product is added to flotoconcentrate. Floccu lant is dosed in a form of 0.1% gel. Therefore it appears a question if during dewatering of dump suspension containing 7÷8% of solid phase (using e.g. centrifugal or pressure filtration) flocculant should be again added, and if an answer is positive - in what amount? As a measure of dewatering efficiency, the final moisture content in cake obtained during centrifugal filtration for defined parameters of the laboratory centrifuge (adapted to a filtration centrifuge) was assumed. The test were carried out in the range of multiplication coefficient ? = a/g = 251.3÷1786.8 and centrifugal time ? = 280÷1800 s for dump suspension containing a base flocculant dose of 30 g/1 Mg, and doses of 15 and 60 g/1 Mg. Each experimental run consists of 6 values of ? and 7 of ? (altogether 42x4 points). For each experimental run tri-parameter correlations in a form of w = f(a/g, ?) = exp[A(a/g)b ?c] + D with regression coefficient R2>0.983 were elaborated. It should be noted that however the correlations quite well describe the process they have no theoretical bases. It was stated that the Magnaflog-919 flocculant dosage in the range 15÷60 g/1 Mg of dry product, for the same a/g and ?, produced an increase of moisture content in cake after centrifugation in comparison with values obtained for dump suspension. This, rather unexpected effect, can be explained by disruption of large flocs during decantation in DECANTER centrifuges and deposition of filtrate in smaller fragments or newly created flocs, for which centrifugal forces were not sufficiently high to remove it from cake. It was proved by higher values of moisture content in cake after centrifugal filtration in comparison with pressure filtration with cake compression. It was also stated the a good usability of filter cloth PT 912 for filtration, while an additive of flocculant accelerated sedimentation. Taking these into account, it seems that dewatering of dump suspension should be carried on in two stages. In the first stage suspension (with 30 g of flocculant per 1 Mg) should be directed to a settling tank, clarified liquid from this apparatus should be used in recirculation. In the second stage post-sedimentation slurry should be directed to a mixing process unit with flotoconcentrate, situated before DECANTER centrifuges.
