Opis:
Useless waste materials are often stored in urban areas taking valuable land and polluting the environment. There has been undertaken research which aim was to test the applicability of the ashes from multi-year heaps as a partial substitute for sand. In the ash-cement composites 10%, 20% and 30% weight of sand was replaced by an ash. Composites sand-ash-cement was modified by an addition of hydrated lime. Introduction of new materials environmentally friendly, using industrial waste is desirable when by using waste materials there is a possibility to obtain materials with desired, assumed technical characteristics and durability. The 30-day trials were subjected to corrosion in 6% solution of sodium chloride and magnesium sulfate. After the corrosion designated the compressive strength of each series, which compared with strengths of series in the same age and not subjected to corrosion. Generally, all composites with the ashes scored higher compressive strength in the control series - without ash. The presence of ash in composites significantly reduced the effects of corrosion. These results suggest the possibility of using these composites in road construction.

Opis:
The aim of the present research was to assess the radiological importance of the fly ashes generated from the incineration of sludge from the “Czajka” sewage treatment plant located in Warsaw, Poland. The γ-spectrometry technique was employed for their radiometry. The high purity germanium (HPGe) detector was mathematically energy-efficiency calibrated. The ash samples were measured two times, i.e., after 24 days and after 3 months of storage. Storage was supposed to provide a radioactive equilibrium. Radionuclides from three natural decay series, i.e., uranium–radium, uranium–actinium, and thorium, were detected in the ash samples. Apart from these, 40K, 137Cs, and 7 Be were also detected. The indicated levels of radionuclides do not produce radioactive hazards, regardless of the method used for further management.

Opis:
The paper presents a short description of aluminosilicate materials which are microspheres derived from fly ash from coal combustion in power stations. The most important properties of such materials, the conditions of their formation, methods of obtaining and selected areas of application are discussed. The microspheres that were tested came from the Power Plant Skawina. Analysis of particle size and wall thickness of the microspheres and the analysis of the chemical composition have been carried out. This article also presents preliminary results of the alkaline activation of the microspheres in order to obtain a fraction within the zeolite. Alkali activation was carried out in several variants, using aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide and the obtained results allow to determine the suitability of the microspheres to obtain zeolites in their substrate. Observations with the scanning electron microscope showed the existence of significant quantities of specific forms of zeolites, after alkaline activation processes of microspheres.

Opis:
Care of the environment in accordance with the principles of sustainable development introduces the possibility and need for waste recycling. Construction and building industries have the greatest potential for reuse of waste. The article presents the results of investigations of cement mortars – tests of compressive and tensile strength after 28 and 56 days of curing – for normative mortars and mortars containing fly ashes – calcareous and siliceous ash – in their composition. To make the samples, the Portland cement CEM I 32,5 R, 42,5R and natural aggregate with graining of 0–2 mm were used. Concrete with siliceous and calcareous admixtures was made in six lots where the ash was added in the quantity of 2%, 5%, 10% of the cement mass or the 2%, 5%, 10% of cement was replaced by ashes. After the tests, it was stated that the siliceous fly-ash admixture increases the compressive and bending strength in comparison to the mortars with the calcareous ash admixtures.

Opis:
The investigations of iron-containing phases existing in fly ashes were performed using transmission Mössbauer spectrometry. The examined samples of fly ashes were collected from different coal combustion systems, that is, stoker-fired boiler in municipal heating plant and pulverized coal boiler in power plant. Several phases are identifi ed in the samples: iron oxides, paramagnetic aluminosilicate glass with Fe3+ ions and Al2O4- -type spinel with Fe2+ ions. It was pointed out that proportions of contents of phases strongly depend not only on the combustion temperature but also on the way of ash collection.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących granulacji popiołów lotnych. Granulację prowadzono w sposób okresowy w granulatorze talerzowym przy stałej prędkości obrotowej 30 obr/min. Materiał sypki nawilżano podczas ruchu przesypowego przy stałym natężeniu zraszania. Otrzymane wyniki pozwoliły określić parametry procesu oraz właściwości uzyskanego granulatu.
Investigation results dealing with the granulation of fly ashes are presented in the paper. Granulation was conducted periodically in a disc granulator at constant rotational speed of 10 rpm. Loose material was wetted during tumbling at constant volumetric liquid flow rate. Results allowed one to describe process parameters and acquired granulate properties.

Opis:
The goal of this study is to develop a method of manufacturing porous ceramic skeletons used as semi-finished products for reinforcement of composite materials or as filters. For manufacturing skeletons, only waste materials from coal combustion (fly ashes and bottom slags) as well as rubber granules from used tires and car parts were used. These granules were a pore-forming agent that underwent thermal degradation during sintering process. The influence of sintering temperature, portion, and type of rubber granules on the porosity of developed ceramic skeletons was determined. The study of structure of base materials and the developed ceramic skeletons in a scanning electron microscope as well as their X-ray phase analysis were made. Results will allow to predict phases that can be formed on the metal-reinforcement interface during pressure infiltration.

Opis:
Water quality and waste management are two chief problems that the modern world is struggling with. Intensified development of the industry not only leads to the production of large amounts of solid waste that must be stored in landfills but can also result in contaminant emissions into the environment. Enormous quantities of ash produced from coal combustion have been a long-term problem of the industry. Literature studies show that fly ash can be used as a material to produce cheap and efficient zeolite-type adsorbents due to abundance of alumina-silicates in their composition. Fly ashes which were processed into zeolites as a result of alkaline hydrothermal treatment were obtained from two power plants in Poland (in Turów and Zgierz). The obtained zeolite materials and raw fly ash samples were characterised in terms of specific surface area, particle size distribution and density. The structure was also investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the mid- infrared wavenumber range. Two raw fly ashes and two zeolite materials were examined for their ability to remove Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the amount of adsorbed copper ions by alkaline-modified fly ash was higher than for unmodified fly ash. The ion removal efficiency is high and exceeds 95%.

Opis:
The tests have been carried out on granulation of fly ash that may significantly reduce the consequences of its storage and transport harmful to the environment, mainly secondary dusting. Granulation was conducted using a disk granulator. The experiments involved the evaluation of a loose additive (bentonite) impact, the analysis of moisture content and water and sodium glass impact, the optimisation of the added bentonite amount and the granulated product breaking resistance test. The were examined such parameters as the ratio of ash to fillers, the amount of supplied binding liquid (distilled water or waterglass) and the place of its feeding. The addition of bentonite to bed (ash) made it possible to completely granulate the material. The introduction of waterglass in place of demineralised water produced the desired effect.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of detailed microscopic observations of cenospheres, available in Poland as well as abroad. The observations were performed for shape, size and thickness of shells analysis. The survey shows that although cenospheres are classified as materials of equal size of grains, the samples coming from different power plants can characterize with various grain size. Most of the cenospheres are characterized with almost perfect sphericity, but as the diameter grows, the spherical shape becomes less regular. A significant quality feature of researched cenospheres is their low volume density, which allows using these cenospheres for producing various building materials including construction materials, light aggregate for plastics production and light concretes.
