Opis:
Motivated by the analogy between a phase-conjugating mirror (PCM) and a superconductor, we search for optical counterparts of the well-known DC and AC Josephson effects. We show that in a system consisting of two PCM's separated by vacuum an 'optical supercurrent' arises as a function of an applied phase difference between the PCM's, which is the optical analogue of the DC supercurrent flowing in a superconducting weak link. The corresponding AC effect occurs when the two PCM's are pumped by light of a different frequency, causing the phase difference to oscillate in time with the frequency difference.

Opis:
A novel scheme for photonic generation of broadly tunable radio frequency signal using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is demonstrated. A continuous wave emitted from the laser diode is modulated by a Mach–Zehnder modulator, then the modulated optical carrier is injected into the RSOA. Due to the four-wave mixing effect in the RSOA, the limited frequency components of the modulated signal are expanded, which directly lead to the generation of a wide frequency comb. Two optical tunable bandpass filters are parallelly connected to select the desired sidebands, which are launched into a photodetector or photomixer to generate radio frequency signal by beating. Using the proposed method, the bandwidth of generated radio frequency signal can range from 20 to 300 GHz.

Opis:
A wideband optical frequency comb (OFC) generator using a fiber re-circulating loop (FRL) including a phase modulator and optical amplifier, cascaded with a spectrum expander containing a high-power erbium-doped fiber amplifier and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, in which the FRL is used as a source to generate seed comb lines, and then generated seed comb lines are extended to a wideband optical frequency comb using cascaded four-wave mixing in the HNLF. Only using one stage spectrum expander, a stable 20-GHz optical comb with 201 comb lines within 30-dB power deviation, spanning 40-nm bandwidth, is achieved. The results show that the HNLF has unique ability to broaden output spectrum from the FRL. In addition, an optical frequency comb is dramatically broadened, which may be predicted by optimizing gain and dispersion of the FRL or configuration of the spectrum expander, or both.

Opis:
We examine nonlinear optical effects in the active medium of the thin-film quasiwaveguide amplifier-oscillator with injection of the external signal. The injection locking has been obtained in the case when both the frequency and the direction of propagation of the injected signal differ from those for a free-running thin-film laser which offers a possibility for the frequency and directional switching of the output of the thin-film laser. The effects of four wave mixing and phase conjugation have been discussed in the active medium of the thin-film laser when additional mirrors forming an external resonator have been used.

Opis:
A multi-wavelength bidirectional Brillouin-erbium fiber ring laser with switchable Brillouin frequency spacing (BFS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the presented Brillouin-erbium ring laser, including an optical amplifier and a highly nonlinear fiber, and without any optical isolator, due to Rayleigh scattering, stimulated Brillouin scattering, and cascaded four-wave mixing initiated successively by the Brillouin pump (BP) light, the odd- and even-order Stokes lines are generated and circulate in the opposite direction in the ring cavity. The BP light and Stokes-induced Rayleigh backscattering light also simultaneously circulate in the ring cavity. Only by adjusting BP power, the gain competition between Brillouin based Stokes and cavity modes’ oscillation can be controlled, the laser output can be conveniently switched between single BFS and odd- or even-order double BFS. In addition, under the certain BP power conditions, the proposed multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser also can realize switchable odd- or even-order Stokes generation and Stokes generation with single BFS, with an increasing wavelength number in turn, only by simply adjusting pump power of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Stability and wavelength tunability of the proposed multi-wavelength bidirectional Brillouin-erbium fiber ring laser are also investigated, respectively.

Opis:
The four-wave-mixing (FWM) noises are modeled when walk-off and intersymbol interference (ISI) are taken into account for any centrosymmetric constellation shaped signal in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) with phase-conjugated twin waves (PCTW) scheme. Bit error rate (BER) and the equivalent Q-factor for any constellation shaped signal are also modeled when the FWM and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noises are taken into account as additive white Gaussian noise. By using the newly derived semi-analytic models, example calculations are carried out for 16-ary signal in PCTW OFDM system with four cases classified according to some proposed constellation shaping schemes adopted or not. A hybrid constellation shaping scheme consisted of Huffman-coded probabilistic shaping and radius-optimized geometric shaping is proposed. The performance gain in terms of the equivalent Q-factor is calculated to be about 0.563 dB for 16-ary signal in PCTW OFDM system with the proposed hybrid constellation shaping scheme over the square conventional 16QAM signal. The performance degradation for such system due to the effects of ISI on the FWM noise is also evaluated by using the semi-analytic calculation models.

Opis:
Thermal plasma, due to its applications, is a research field of great importance, but reliable diagnostics of such plasma remains a challenging task. Spatially resolved methods, which provide local values of plasma parameters, are crucial for understanding the underlying physics. This can be achieved using pump–probe techniques. Two methods applicable and useful for thermal plasma diagnostics—four-wave mixing and scattering of laser beams—are discussed in this paper. Experimental examples of their application, namely four-wave mixing in argon arc plasma and scattering of laser light by laser-induced plasma, are presented.

Opis:
In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of our optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with three different test fibers, namely, single mode fiber, conventional non-zero dispersion shifted fiber and dispersion shifted fiber. While comparing the performances of those fibers, our optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber has yielded a better quality factor of 5.24 at 2.5 Gbit/s for long haul fiber length of 120 km in the absence of amplification and dispersion compensation. In order to measure the nonlinear impairments of wavelength division multiplexing channel, the quality factor values are measured at the sample channel 193.1 THz for 150 km lengthed fiber with peak input power of 6 dBm. Due to a very large effective area of optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber, it delivers a better quality factor of 6.12 compared to the other test fibers. We have also carried out the analysis for higher bitrates and different modulation formats at the transmission end. More phase encoded modulations of carrier-suppressed return-to-zero–differentiated phase shift keying and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero–differential quadrature phase shift keying offered optimum performances for a distance of 120 km at 10 Gbit/s bitrate. By including optical amplifiers, we could achieve a record fiber transmission length of 4000 km at the bitrate of 2.5 Gbit/s which can help the future wavelength division multiplexing optical networks to a great extent.
