Opis:
World civil aviation is an open-source system that is affected by a large number of related and non-related factors. Aviation safety is one of the prioritized directions in the industry. Its managerial decision-making process is primarily based on a versatile analysis of security data in which the choice of the appropriate mathematical apparatus is fundamental. This article suggests applying fractal-statistical analysis to evaluate the aviation safety management system in terms of determining the random distribution of quantitative dynamics of aircraft crashes with lethal consequences in the period from 1946 to 2017. This allows us to verify the adequacy of probabilistic approaches appliance in analysing the dynamics of aviation disasters. The results of research carried out on the basis of the Hurst exponent have allowed us to conclude that the dynamics of aviation disasters is characterized by the effect of "spatial memory". In other words, these are "hidden laws", for which further investigation can become an effective tool for the development of proactive methods in managing aviation safety.

Seismicity of the southern segment of the Levant Rift along the Jordan Valley: statistic and fractal analysis
Aktywność sejsmiczna południowego segmentu ryftu Lewantu w obrębie doliny Jordanu - analiza statystyczna i dynamiki nieliniowej
Autorzy:
Lenckowski, Robert
Opis:
Seismicity of the Levant is strongly affected by the transform zone linking the Red Sea rift in the South with the area of collision within the Taurus Mts, where the Arabian and African Plates subduct under the Anatolian Plate. The transform zone shows a number of rift traits, hence its traditional name. The Jordan Rift is a part of its southern segment and this paper aims at analyzing the seismic activity this region displays. Historical seismicity observations have been combined with the instrumental period research that comprised e.g. analysis of the Gutenberg-Richter law and time variations of the b-value of this relation, determination of the focus parameters, declustering of the catalogue and fractal analysis - fluctuations of the correlation dimension in particular. This research was based on the seismic zonation of the area. Eventually, an attempt was made to create a general seismicity model according to relations of Gutenberg-Richter, Molnar and Papazachos et al.

Opis:
Sarmatian thin-bedded sandstone and shales have been a subject of statistical studies to differentiate between good and poor reservoir rocks and to show gas-saturated layers in comparison to water-saturated strata. Statistical studies including fractal analysis were performed on well logging data from the Sędziszów 34 borehole drilled in a belt of hydrocarbon deposits that continue below the northern edge of the Carpathian–Stebnik overthrust. Lithological variability and porosity differentiation and changes in water saturation were traced on the basis of the results of well logging interpretation. Basic statistics and histograms of petrophysical parameters have been analysed. A generalized second order fractal correlation dimension was calculated for all parameters and analysed as for a time series. Fractal dimensions did not correlated with the parameters, but good positive correlations between them and the parameters were observed and showed that the curves analysed had the same type of complexity. High correlation coefficients showed pairs of fractal dimensions for those parameters which had similar variability and the same curve roughness. The fractal correlation dimension described the type of complexity of the parameter (curve roughness) and indicated, for example, how shaliness influenced the reservoir properties of the local Middle Miocene. Therefore, the results were also useful in practice, which gave extra information on thin-bedded reservoir rocks.

Opis:
Two statistical methods, fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics, are tested for their applicability to ostracod systematics. For this comparison, two morphologically similar ostracod species (Krithe compressa and Krithe iniqua) whose genus−level systematics is still incompletely resolved, are selected. Twenty−nine right valves of each species were collected from the upper Pliocene samples at the Monte San Nicola section in southern Italy. Statistical analyses (MANOVA on morphometric shape variables, and D values) were utilized to test if geometric morphometrics and fractal analysis are appropriate into discriminating between the two species. Both methods succeeded in distinguishing the species statistically. The fractal analysis of the two ostracod species shows D values centered on 1.31±0.02 for Krithe iniqua and on 1.40±0.02 for Krithe compressa. Geometric morphometric analysis indicates significant differences between the two species and allows studying intra−populational variability as well as. The most variable traits indicated by geometric morphometrics are vestibular area and posterior outline of the shell, indicating that these traits are the most relevant for the systematics of the species analyzed. Both fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics provide a measure of population variability. Fractal analysis has the advantage of being free from any subjectivity in the selection of characters and could be most appropriate to use for analysis of complex ornamentation for systematic purposes. However, a possible advantage of geometric morphometrics over fractal analysis is its ability to indicate where statistically significant variations in shape occur on the shell.
