Opis:
The purpose of the conducted studies was to elaborate a questionnaire of attitudes towards cheating in school and investigate the relation between determinism and free will and attitudes towards unfairness in school. In order to elaborate on the questionnaire of attitudes towards cheating in school, Study 1 was carried out among 198 adolescents - students of technical schools and high schools. The elaborated tool was characterised by satisfying psychometric properties. Study 2, in which 107 students participated, examined the role of belief in free will and determinism as factors related to attitudes towards cheating in school. The study showed ambivalent results between variables. The only factor that was clearly positively related to negative attitudes towards cheating was scientific determinism.

The concept of emergence : a brief history and a philosophical analysis of an ontological regulative principle of organization
Autorzy:
Manzocco, Roberto
Opis:
Emergence is it is a concept that should undergo more careful philosophical analysis. This paper aims to promote the idea that "emergence" should be taken as an ontological regulative principle (rather than a conceptual instrument able to provide a quick empirical answer to many concrete scientific problems). The usefulness of the proposed approach rests in the fact that it could work as an overarching theoretical framework for the ever-growing body of theories and empirical data provided by natural and social sciences; it could also help to overcome (at least partly) the extreme over-specialization that characterizes contemporary knowledge. Furthermore, it could work as a programmatic framework for comparing and combining data and theories belonging to very different fields - from the natural to the social sciences - but related to one single, very complicated entity, that is, Man. So, after a short history of the concept of emergence, an analysis of its ontological nature will follow; then some specific philosophical problems - like the metaphoric aspects of the emergentist approach, or the ontological unification of every kind of emergence - will be discussed. Afterward this paper will provide a few reasons for supporting a regulative approach to emergence and will illustrate its advantages - supplying an example/proposal taken from the debate about free will.

Opis:
This essay aims to show that the recent development of quantum theory may provide us with an answer to one of the most compelling metaphysical problems, namely the problem of determinism. First, I sketch the conceptual background and draw the distinction between metaphysical and epistemological determinisms. Then, on the ground of the analysis of the problem of determinism in quantum mechanics, I argue that (1) metaphysical determinism is independent of quantum-mechanical formalism, and (2) that quantum nonlocality makes epistemological determinism impossible. I also try to show that metaphysical determinism should be regarded as a Kantian regulative idea which sets the horizon for scientific inquiry but which at the same time lacks what Kant calls “objective validity.” The main conclusion is that metaphysical determinism should be regarded as an idealization – a formal, cognitive principle that we a priori assume and not something that we discover through scientific inquiry.

Aspects of motivation : reflections on Roy Baumeister’s essay
Autorzy:

Opis:
Reflecting on Roy Baumeister’s guidelines for a general theory of motivation, we relate his ideas to our own perspectives and interests. In those terms we consider, among others, the role of motivation in cognitive processes, the emergence of motives from basic needs, the mental representation of motives in memory, and the issue of free will. Roy’s paper compellingly demonstrates the indispensability of motivation to psychological phenomena writ large, and it aptly identifies critical junctures where further motivational research is needed.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie poglądów Marcina Lutra na temat "niewolnej woli" i wpływu, jakie wywarły i wciąż wywierają one na myśl filozoficzną i teologiczną kultury Europy i Stanów Zjednoczonych. Teza o "niewolnej woli" człowieka, wyjaśniona w broszurze "De Servo Arbitrio" z grudnia 1525 r., stoi u podstaw zarówno antropologii jak i teologii i chrystologii weimarskiego reformatora.
The aim of the article is to show Luther's view in the "bondage of the will" and its impact in the theological and philosophical thoughts they have had in Europe and the United States. The thesis of "bondage of the will" explained in a booklet "De Servo Arbitrio" from December, 1525 is a base for not only anthropology but also theology and christology of the weimarsky reformer. According to this idea a person is redeemed only sible because the human's nature is totally decayed and sinful since the original sin. The Council of Trent was a reaction to Marin Luther's ideas. It emphasized that we are in fact excused through the faith in Jesus, yet it happens with responsibility and cooperation with God's grace.

Opis:
Scientific experiments which try to examine free will are faced with various critical arguments — both philosophical and methodological. In this article I will present the most important and the most interesting critical arguments attacking two the most influential experiments: Benjamin Libet experiment and John‐Dylan Haynes experiment. In the first part of the article I will consider a particular criticism of Libet paradigm, which loses its importance in context of Haynes paradigm. Next I will present critical arguments which attack both Haynes and Libet experiments (and probably all other psychophysiological experiments facing free will problem). Because of this analysis I will consider informative value of presented experiments in context of existence of free will.

Opis:
The primary goal of the study was to examine the relationships between spirituality, belief in free will and perceived self-efficacy among young adults. In order to develop the preliminary adaptation of the FAD-Plus questionnaire, used for measuring the lay beliefs in free will and three related constructs, Study 1 was carried out among 485 young adults. The tool had satisfactory psychometric properties. Study 2, in which 340 students participated, verified the role of believing in free will as a potential mediator between spirituality and perceived self-efficacy. In the case of male students, total mediation was found, and in the case of female students, partial mediation was noted. The studies indicate the need to put greater emphasis on the spiritual sphere and the sense of free will in the education provided for young adults.

Opis:
In this paper free volitions are construed as a subclass of reflective judgements in the Kantian meaning, i.e. judgements not involving any fixed concepts but displaying a concept-like form. Judgements expressing volitions and issuing in action may be termed volitional judgements, therefore free volitions are construed as reflective volitional judgements. Due to an element of conceptual novelty and the fact that in a reflective judgement volition gets conceptually fixed out of an unstable equilibrium between different conceptualizations, free volitions thus construed seem to be apt candidates for causally undetermined events.
