Opis:
Adsorption of La3+ and Dy3+ from their aqueous nitrate solutions on biohydroxyapatite (BHAP) originally prepared from raw pork bones by steam gasification of has been investigated for the La3+and Dy3+ concentrations within the range of 1.44·10–4–8.06·10–3 mol/dm3 and 2.71·10–5 5.68·10–3 mol/dm3, respectively. It was found that saturation of the lanthanide uptake occurred at 0.0625 moles of Ln3+ per mole of BHAP. Two model isotherms, i.e., Langmuir (qe = qmCe/((1/KL) + Ce)) and Freundlich (logqe = logKF + (1/n)logCe), were used to fit the adsorption data. The following isotherm parameters were found for La3+: qm = 0.1265 mol/kg, KL = 2701 dm3/mol, n = 5.61, KF = 0.283 (mol/kg)·(dm3/mol)1/n and for Dy3+: qm = 0.1223 mol/kg, KL = 3635 dm3/mol, n = 5.82, KF = 0.306(mol/kg)·(dm3/mol)1/n. A better correlation was found for the Freundlich model. A relatively high value of the n parameter in the Freundlich equation suggests heterogeneous chemisorption of lanthanide ions.

Opis:
The bedrock opoka has been lately reported as an appropriate reactive media for onsite wastewater treatment systems due to its high phosphorus (P) sorption capacity. However, variations on its chemical composition may affect its reactivity with P, therefore leading to a variable P removal effi ciency. In this paper, the P-sorption capacity of three different types of opoka from the region of Miechów, Poland, is reported. According to the silica and carbonate content, opoka samples were classifi ed as light--weight and heavy-weight opoka. When heated over 900°C, opoka showed a very high P-sorption capacity that was well correlated to its Ca content. P-sorption isotherms from batch experiments with an artifi cial P solution were plotted and fi tted to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The Freundlich isotherm appeared to model better the P-sorption of light opoka and the Langmuir isotherm of heavy opoka, suggesting different dominating mechanisms of P-sorption by light and heavy opoka.

Opis:
The textile industry is very important because its products are widely used by society, however, this activity has a great contribution to the contamination of water resources due to its effluents that contain large amounts of colorants, among which is the blue of methylene (MB) and methyl orange (MO) that can cause damage to the health of living being. For this reason the present study concerned the removal of these dyes by adsorption using Eichhornia Crassipes (Water lily) with different treatments. The results show that the chemisorption removal process using two sites per dye molecule having an exothermic nature for the water-treated lily and for the NaOH-treated lily is endothermic. The maximum adsorption capacities of 228.9 mg/g for MB (60 °C) and 155.38 mg/g (30 °C) for MO with the NaOH treatment were achieved. The SEM analysis shows that there are significant changes in the surface due to the treatments. The XRD patterns indicate that with the pretreatment with NaOH the crystallinity of WL increases while the treatment with water maintains the presence of amorphous cellulose. In the FTIR spectra, the bands corresponding to different functional groups such as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose that participate in the adsorption of both dyes are observed.

Opis:
Gallium (Ga) is considered an important element in the semiconducting industry and as the lifespan of electronic products decrease annually Ga-containing effluent has been increasing. The present study investigated the use of biodegradable polymer powders, crab shell and chitosan, in the removal of Ga(III) ions from aqueous solution. Ga(III) biosorption was modeled to Lagergren-first, pseudo-second order and the Weber-Morris models. Equilibrium data was modeled to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherms to determine the probable biosorption behavior of Ga(III) with the biosorbents. The biosorbents were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectra analysis.

Opis:
In this study, magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method, coated with silica, and then the surface of silica coated magnetite (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂) nanoparticles was modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) at first. Secondly, attained nanoparticles were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, vibrating sample magnetometer, and zeta-sizer devices/methods. Finally, detailed adsorption experiments were performed to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous media by synthesized nanoparticles. Mean size and specific surface area of synthesized nanoparticles were about 15 nm and 89.5 m²/g, respectively. The highest adsorption capacity among used adsorbents (Fe₃O₄, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@L) was attained by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and it was determined that adsorption capacity of the other two adsorbents was too low when compared to the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Optimum conditions for Cr(VI) adsorption by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were: pH, 3; temperature, 55°C; contact time, 90 min; adsorbent concentration, 0.5 g/l and initial Cr(VI) concentration 10 mg/l. Under these conditions, adsorption capacity and removal percentage of Cr(VI) were found to be 33.45 mg/g and 88%, respectively.

Opis:
Wastewater coagulation and electrocoagulation were investigated as sorption processes involving colloidal sorbents such as (Al(OH)3)n, (Fe(OH)3)m and (Fe(OH)2)p. An attempt was made to fit experimental data to two popular sorption models. Based on a statistical and mathematical analysis of the obtained results, the Langmuir model of chemical adsorption was regarded more probable than the Freundlich model. The highest maximum adsorption of phosphorus in the analyzed wastewater was achieved with the use of PIX, and the lowest adsorption maxima were reported for an iron electrocoagulant. PAC was most effective in reducing COD of wastewater. PAC and PIX delivered higher adsorption maxima for compounds responsible for COD than aluminum and iron electrocoagulants.

Opis:
This research investigated the inhibition behavior of Spondias mombin leaf (SML) extracts in 0.1 M HCl solution on mild steel at various concentrations and temperatures. The result reveals that the inhibition efficiency of the extract on the mild steel sheet increases with increasing concentration of the extract and decreases with increase in temperature. Therefore, the adsorption mechanism of the extract on the mild steel surface is physical. Calculated Correlation Coefficient (R2) values show that the process follows a Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The proposed temperature coefficient equation of adsorption mechanism was found to be appropriate.

Opis:
Thermodynamics and adsorption studies were conducted with a dye of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite. Adsorption of the dye was investigated with an initial dye concentration at pH 8±0.2, 303, 313 and 323 K. The adsorption experiments were carried out isothermally at three different temperatures. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium data and the results were discussed in details. The kinetic data agreed with the pseudo-first order model with rate constants (k2) in the range of 3.05–1.59.10–1 g/mg min. The thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy, entropy change and enthalpy were calculated for natural diatomite. These values showed that adsorption of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

Opis:
In this work, nickel adsorption onto low Jordanian zeolite dose is being investigated. Natural zeolite doses were stirred continuously with nickel solutions in batch reactors at 180 RPM for 24 hours, where the temperature was set to 20°C. The pH was initially 4.5 and reached 5.2 at equilibrium. The removal efficiency of nickel reaches maximum value when the initial nickel concentration is around 1 ppm and then tends to decrease when the initial nickel concentration increases above 1 ppm. The optimal nickel removal reaches 65% when the initial nickel concentration is 1 ppm and the zeolite dose is 26 mg∙dm–3. This study investigates the behaviour of nickel removal and modelling isotherms below and above this critical peak point. At this level of zeolite dose, the adsorption does not follow either Freundlich or Langmuir isotherms, but rather, it follows Freundlich for the data plot just below the peak point with the highest coefficient of determination (R2) equals (0.98) when the zeolite dose is (26 mg∙dm–3), whereas it follows Langmuir for the data plot just above the peak point with the highest coefficient of determination (R2) equals (0.99) when the zeolite dose is (10 mg∙dm–3). These findings clarify the theory behind each isotherm and can be used to find new information for efficient treatment techniques.
