Opis:
The goal of this paper is to identify the degree of implementation of remote work in 25 EU countries in 2020 and to indicate potential factors that may determine the share of work from home (WFH) in total employment. The author argues that along with higher labour productivity, the share of WFH in total employment increases. Moreover, the correlation analysis also showed an important role of technological infrastructure, higher education or the share of people aged 15–24 in the structure of society.

Images of the "future of work" : a discourse analysis of visual data on the internet
Autorzy:
Lindell, Eva
Ćwikła, Małgorzata
Opis:
This paper presents findings from a critical discourse analysis of visual data gathered in regular, monthly data sampling on Google, DuckDuckGo and Bing on the theme ‘the future of work’ that were published online on Polish and Swedish websites during 2018–2021. Visions about the future in the form of images create an archive of ideas on the potential directions of societal development, where discourse is present both in what is visible, and what is invisible. The study shows predominantly stereotypical framings of work by young office workers. Conclusions are drawn on how the future is visualized contrary to popular claims of job losses that are predicted to strike mainly the younger, middle-class population. In the images collected, humans appear as mainly content in a working life without manual labour, frustration or clutter, but also without leisure, displaying a lack of visions of an older workforce, as well as the possible role of humans as useful and fulfilled without work in the future.

Technological unemployment : a brief history of an idea
Autorzy:
Campa, Riccardo
Opis:
This article traces a brief history of a particularly relevant concept in political economy and economic sociology: technological unemployment. The historical narration aims at covering four centuries, since the beginning of the industrial revolution up to the present. As a consequence, it has to be highly selective. It is mainly based on sources in the English language and refers only to a few of the many social scientists involved in the debate. The scopes of the inquiry are essentially two. The first is to show that focusing on technological unemployment as an idea - and not simply as a phenomenon - is appropriate, because of the high level of controversy that still characterizes the debate. The second is to drive attention to a concept that could be extremely useful to understand the technological and societal changes occurring in the twenty-first century.

Opis:
Is Artificial Intelligence qualitatively different from other means of economizing the use of labor? Are we on the edge of a jobless society? If yes, are we ready for it? These are a few of the questions discussed in this collection of academic works. This book traces a brief history of the concept of technological unemployment; proposes a short-term scenario analysis concerning the relations between automation, education, and unemployment; analyzes the most recent literature on social robotics; examines the possible futures generated by the development of intelligent machines; shows the relation between automation and unemployment in an Italian case study; considers the impact if machines become effective pursuers of knowledge or even conscious; and addresses the role of serendipity in the development of science and technology.

The future of work : comparing narratives
Il futuro del lavoro : narrazioni a confronto
Autorzy:
Campa, Riccardo
Opis:
This article compares the dominant narratives on the future of work. A paradigm shift is underway in the context of scenario analyzes, in light of the impetuous development of robotic and computer technologies in recent years. Near the two main traditions of thought, which respectively emphasize "technological unemployment" and "compensation theory", a third vision of the future is emerging that examines trends and scenarios ignored by traditional economic theories, among which the hollowing out phenomenon. If the trend remains unchanged, technology will not cause the complete disappearance of work, but of the average qualified one. In other words, in the absence of corrective interventions, the society of the future will be characterized by the presence of a minority of privileged citizens, who will be able to fully enjoy the fruits of automation, surrounded by a majority of citizens engaged in precarious and degrading jobs.

Opis:
Science - research transformation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has a number of colours and shadows, many dimensions including technical, social, community, financial, economic and civilization. This transformation has many wide development roads but also numerable pitfalls and traps. It does not take place solely at the level of scientific and technical progress and innovation. It preliminarily takes place in a complex sociopolitical-economic context, narrowed for simplification as social acceptance and education only. Such acceptance, for example expressed simply by demand and market popularity, for simple items supplemented by useful functions, such as an iron that recognizes the type of fabric and matches its work accordingly, a completely autonomous vacuum cleaner, etc., is trivial. We aim at much deeper relations of IoT with society. If IoT were only adding such functionalities, it would not be worth the time to consider it here. IoT causes a lot of confusion for much more important reasons in many areas of life. Somewhere further on the potential paths of IoT development, it has been noted with interest, but also with anxiety, the possibility of its empowerment as local but also global, superintendent surveillance system, gathering enormous amounts of information, creating knowledge and making autonomous decisions. Potential subjectivity must include such attributes as acquiting from the creator, autonomy, consciousness, morality and further building by the society the whole legal system around the new entity. It will not be a single entity, it will be a whole virtual society, with electronic people. The consequences can be far-reaching and appear as an inevitable option on such a scale for the first time in the history of our human society. Overcoming certain barriers recognized by us may mean that the intelligence and consciousness are not only attributes of the human biological mind. Such reasoning, not without a reason, encounters strong resistance. However, there is a fundamental difference between the opposition to some genetic research and the potential modification of man himself, and the opposition to machine building, a system of superintendence that far exceeds the possibilities of a single man and of entire societies.

Polska : stare i nowe koncepcje prawne w zmieniającym się świecie pracy
Poland : old and new legal concepts in the changing world of work
Autorzy:
Mitrus, Leszek
Wydawca:
Cambridge University Press
Opis:
W konsekwencji mamy do czynienia z nieustanną erozją standardów ochrony pracy.
The contribution deals with Polish labour law from the perspective of the transformation of the world of work. The elaboration introduces the Labour Code concept of employment relationship, legal basis of an independent economic activity, as well as civil law contracts to render services. Moreover, it presents atypical forms of employment in Poland, including previous regulations on telework, and current regulations concerning temporary agency work and remote work. In author’s opinion, Polish regulations and traditional legal concepts are not flexible enough and not suitable to reflect the complexity of the contemporary world of work, particularly in light of the emergence of different legal forms of paid work performance. Polish labour law is rooted in the twentieth century and it did not ‘invent’ the prototypes that would be appropriate to regulate either the gig economy or the status of platform workers and on-demand workers. De lege lata Uber and other electronic platforms are de facto immune from labour law standards. Therefore, the statutory protection of individuals working via application is inadequate. The development of the gig economy is deepening the precarious position of numerous labour market participants. Consequently, we have to do with the continuous erosion of labour protection standards.

Opis:
The digital revolution is reshaping the Polish workplace, necessitating new skill sets from future professionals. However, gender disparities in future digital skills can perpetuate inequalities in the workforce. This study investigates the gender gap in Polish university students’ perceptions of their digital competencies and future skills preparedness. Drawing on data from a survey of 755 students across diverse faculties, study modes, and employment types, the research explores how gender impacts students’ self-assessment by addressing two questions: Do men and women differ in their awareness of the skills demanded by the future job market? Are there differences in how men and women view their proficiency in their own future skills and digital competencies? Through analyzing these factors, the study aims to define the gender gap in digital competencies and future skills perception among Polish university students and develop recommendations for educational institutions and policymakers to ensure equitable access to future-proof skills for all students. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how gender shapes preparation for the digital workplace, informing strategies to promote inclusivity and equip all students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving Polish economy.
Rewolucja cyfrowa kształtuje przyszłe miejsca pracy i wymaga nowych umiejętności. W badaniu dokonano analizy różnic płciowych w postrzeganiu kompetencji cyfrowych i gotowości do spełniania przyszłych wymagań pracodawców wśród polskich studentów.
