Opis:
Current financial regulation requires banks to have interest rate risk methods in place commensurate with the size and complexity of the bank. The more sophisticated model, the better the prediction of the future Net Interest Income and its sensitivity to the movement of the interest rate curve. The static methods of which an overview is presented in this article, struggle with limitations such as an unchanged interest rate curve, the non-inclusion of items with optionality and many others. The objective of this article is to show how static methods progressed with time, and how some of their limitations presented by a basic Maturity Gap analysis can be addressed in an interesting way. In addition, it also provides the reader with an interpretation of the results of the analysis performed through the aforementioned methods.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify: (1) business process fits and gaps, (2) gaps allocation to process towers and categories, (3) IT related gaps, (4) IT tools requiring improvement, (4) placement of the IT related gaps on Heat-Map, (5) compliance related gaps. Design/methodology/approach: The fit-gap approach was to identify a differences between the referential Finance Operational Model, and “as is” processes. Fit-gaps were identified with application of workshops and brainstorming discussions in exemplary finance shared service center, delivering service to 36 independent entities located in 11 EMEA countries. Data collection plan was built based on Finance Operational Model taxonomy and service catalogue. Findings: Findings of the study are: during this study 4999 fits & gaps were found: (1) 36.2% of activities fully fit to the referential model, (2) 28.8% activities require adjustment of ‘process placement’, and transition from one location to another, (3) 19.5% of gaps are allocated to IT category, where smaller (7.9%) or bigger (11.6%) adjustments of IT infrastructure need to be planned, (4) 15.6% of activities require changes in the way of working. 27.5% of identified gaps impact compliance. Research limitations/implications: Due to project time frame limitations, the finance processes were reviewed and drill down to the level of single process, not single activity. Originality/value: The value of this study is presentation of the business areas, which needs to be adjusted to meet requirements of the finance referential model on the organization's way to process standardization.

Opis:
The concept of strategic thinking has failed to take its due place among families. While, organizations continue to execute robust and increasingly complex strategic plans, families endure in the tradition of extemporary, ad hoc short term and uncalculated long term decisions. This paper gives a blow-by-blow account of the historical and contemporary developments that have led to body of knowledge and general presuppositions concerning family planning as widely understood today. It sustains the opinion that the concept of strategic planning needs to be advanced among families. Meanwhile, this paper opines that “family planning” as is currently regarded, needs to be reviewed in terms of naming and disciplinary content to create a fit within its due scope under healthcare.

Opis:
Time Series Analysis of Leaf Area Index (LAI) is vital to the understanding of global vegetation dynamics. The LAI time series derived from satellite observations are usually not complete and noisy due to cloud contamination and uncertainties in the retrieval techniques. In this paper, the continuity and consistency of the MODIS 8 day LAI products are improved using a method based on Caterpillar Singular Spectrum Analysis. The proposed method is compared with other standard methods: Savitzky-Golay filter, Empirical Mode Decomposition, Low Pass filtering and Asymmetric Gaussian fitting. The experiment demonstrates the smoothing and gapfilling ability of the developed method, which is more robust across the biomes both in terms of root mean square error metrics and bias metrics as compared to the standard methods.

Opis:
This paper aims to investigate the patterns of gender inequalities in the Information and Communication (ICT) sector in European Union (EU) countries. Based on secondary data from Eurostat, a cluster analysis has been conducted to identify clusters of EU countries with various patterns of dependencies among the gender pay gap, female entrepreneurship, and employment in the ICT sector. Three clusters of EU countries have been identified with different patterns of the situation as regards women in this sector. In countries belonging to the first cluster, a higher level of gender pay gap coexists with the lowest share of female participation in the ICT sector and features the choice of entrepreneurship rather than employment. In countries of the second cluster, the lowest gender pay gap is observed together with an increase in female employment in the ICT sector as compared to the countries in the first cluster, and a higher share of employed women than entrepreneurs. In the countries of the third cluster, the moderate gender pay gap found therein is associated with the highest share of female ICT entrepreneurs, and is higher than the share of employed professionals. The discovery of the various patterns of the co-existence of the gender pay gap and women’s participation in the ICT sector reveal that the pay gap is rather the factor preventing women from entering this sector, as there is limited potential to push them towards entrepreneurship instead of paid employment. The authors’ results contribute to the theory of entrepreneurship and gender studies by investigating gender gaps in entrepreneurship and wages in the ICT sector as a primary sector.

Opis:
For obvious reasons, models for decision-making under severe uncertainty are austere. Simply put, there is precious little to work with under these conditions. This fact highlights the great importance of utilizing in such cases the ingredients of the mathematical model to the fullest extent, which in turn brings under the spotlight the art of mathematical modeling. In this discussion we examine some of the subtle considerations that are called for in the mathematical modeling of decision-making under severe uncertainty in general, and worst-case analysis in particular. As a case study we discuss the lessons learnt on this front from the Info-Gap experience.

Opis:
One of the most serious problems of fiscal character is the issue of the tax gap. The tax gap is defined as the amount of tax liability faced by taxpayers that is not paid on time. The tax gap comes from three main areas of non-compliance with the tax law – firstly, from underreporting of income, secondly, from underpayment of taxes, and thirdly, from non-filing of returns. The tax evasions in the area of value added tax create one of the largest groups of tax gaps. This article describes the current situation in the field of tax gap in selected countries of the European Union. The aim of this paper is to determine the dependence of the VAT gap on three variables: the Corruption Perception Index CPI, GDP growth rate and the basic VAT rate. The method of regression analysis was used, which was performed on data in the years 2000–2011. Although it could be assumed that tax burden will affect the VAT gap the most, the highest dependence was shown in the case of Corruption Perception Index.

Opis:
This paper describes a forecasting exercise of close-to-open returns on major global stock indices, based on high-frequency price patterns that have become available in foreign markets overnight. Generally speaking, out-ofsample forecast performance depends on the forecast method as well as the information that the forecasts are based on. In this paper both aspects are considered. The fact that the close-to-open gap is a scalar response variable to a functional variable, namely an overnight foreign price pattern, brings the prediction exercise in the realm of functional data analysis. Both parametric and non-parametric functional data analysis are considered, and compared with a simple linear benchmark model. The information set is varied by dividing global markets into three clusters, Asia-Pacific, Europe and North-America, and including or excluding price patterns on a per-cluster basis. The overall best performing forecast is nonparametric using all available information, suggesting the presence of nonlinear relations between the overnight price patterns and the opening gaps.

Opis:
The classic relationships concerning the harmonic content in the air gap field of three-phase machines are presented in form of series of rotating waves. The same approach is applied to modeling of permanent magnet motors with fractional phase windings. All main reasons of non-sinusoidal shape of flux density distribution, namely, magnets’ shape and their placement, slotting, magnetic saturation and eccentricity are also related to their counterparts in modal-frequency spectrum. The Fourier 2D spectrum of time-stepping finite element solution is confronted with results of measurements, with special attention paid to accuracy of both methods.
