Opis:
Porous silicon shows some interesting features for micromechanical applications. Some applications make use of its high surface-to-volume ratio. A capacitive gas or humidity sensor using the adsorption of gases on the porous surface can be easily fabricated. However an opportunity for more sensitive device is given by micromechanical structure. In this paper we report on the piezoresistive cantilever beam structure with porous silicon adsorbing spot as a gas sensor.

Opis:
This article demonstrates the application of a gas sensor array to monitor the effectiveness of the absorption process of air stream purification from odorous compounds (toluene vapors). A self-constructed matrix consisting of five commercially available gas sensors was used. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was selected as the statistical technique used to calibrate the matrice. Gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) was used as a reference analytical technique, which enabled to obtain reliable quantitative determinations of toluene concentration in the samples. A commercially available absorption liquid dedicated to non-polar compounds was used as an absorbent. The process was carried out in two identical systems: in first, pure toluene was absorbed and in the second, toluene vapor contaminated with acetone. This approach allowed verifying the selectivity of the prepared MLR calibration model for process control in the case of the presence of more or less expected pollutants in the treated gas. The results obtained with the gas sensor array were related to the reference technique and they confirm the usefulness and advisability of using these devices to monitor the absorption processes as a cheaper and more time-efficient alternative to chromatographic methods. The root mean square error (RMSE) in absorptivity determination between the results received with the analytical and sensor techniques was 0.019 and 0.041 when treating pure toluene vapors and its vapors with acetone, respectively. Compared to instrumental techniques, sensor matrices are technologically less complex, useful for laboratory purposes, as well as showing application potential for field studies. However, it is necessary to develop more sensitive and selective chemical gas sensor arrays and better master advanced data processing and identification techniques.

Opis:
Zbadano odpowiedzi półprzewodnikowych sensorów przy oddziaływaniu gazów N(CH3)3, H2S, C2H5OH, NH3. Określono wielkość odpowiedzi czujnika w zależności od koncentracji gazów w szerokim zakresie stężenia. Udowodniono skuteczność wykorzystania półprzewodnikowych sensorów gazowych do ekspresowej analizy jakości produktów spożywczych.
Responses of semiconductor sensors have been tested for action of N(CH3)3, H2S, C2H5OH, and NH3 gases within the temperature range from 100 oC to 350oC. For the tested gases the following temperature values corresponding to the sensor maximum sensitivity value have been selected: N(CH3)3 - 300 oC, H2S - 200 oC, C2H5OH - 275 oC, and NH3 - 275 oC.The sensor response magnitude has been determined depending on the gas concentration at the sensor maximum sensitivity temperature. Interactions have been tested in the equilibrium conditions. It has been found that values of equilibrium isotherm equation coefficients depend on the gas-sensor system temperature as well as on the chemical nature of a gas within a wide range of its concentration. The application of sensors to determine food product quality can be considered as an express quality analysis method. It makes possible to determine condition of fast-spoiling food products and the time left of their usability for consumption. The tested sensors are characterised by high sensitivity, low manufacturing costs and operating facility. Their additional advantage is that they can be used for the express quality analysis with no need to apply any complex and expensive measuring systems.

Opis:
This document presents the results of numerical analyses of the SAW gas sensor in the steady state. The effect of SAW velocity changes depending on how the surface electrical conductivity of the sensing layer is predicted. The conductivity of roughness sensing layer above the piezoelectric waveguide depends on the profile of the diffused gas molecule concentration inside the layer. Numerical results for the gas DMMP (CAS Number 756-79-6) for layer (RR)-P3HT in the steady state are shown. The main aim of the investigations was to study the thin film interaction with target gases in the SAW sensor configuration based on diffusion equation for polymers. Numerical results for profile concentration in steady state are shown. The results of numerical acoustoelectric analysis (NAA) allow to select the sensor design conditions, including the morphology of the sensor layer, its thickness, operating temperature and layer type. The numerical results based on the code written in Python, are described and analyzed. The theoretical results were verified and confirmed experimentally.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono nowatorski wielokanałowy, optoelektroniczny system pomiarowy i sposób pomiaru stężenia gazów przemysłowych i toksycznych. Mierzony analit gazowy może być różny w zależności od zastosowanej interferencyjnej nanostruktury sensorowej. Pomiar odbywa się w gazowym środowisku pomiarowym. Niniejsze rozwiązanie optoelektronicznego, gazowego systemu pomiarowego wykorzystuje interferencyjne, optyczne nanostruktury sensorowe zawierające w swej konstrukcji cienkie warstwy receptorowe z optycznie czynnych materiałów. Zatem, optyczna głowica sensorowa zmienia swoje parametry optyczne w wyniku oddziaływania z badanym analitem gazowym.
In the paper the multichannel, optoelectronic gas sensor system based on interferometric, gasochromic nanostructures is presented. The silicon colour sensor TCS230 detects the intensity and change of colour coordinates RGB of an optical signal resulting from exposure of the sensing structure to a specific type of gas. Using multichannel measurement, one can simultaneously detect different gas or analyte molecules in the sample by immobilizing different optical receptor thin films (nanostructures) at different channels. Each optical sensing channel consists of three parts: the input port which includes a broadband light source: "warm" white LED, multi-layered sensing nanostructure: interferometric and gasochromic, the output port including a silicon colour sensor TCS230 detecting the intensity and change of colour coordinates RGB of an optical signal resulting from the sensing structure exposure to a specific type of gas. At the sensing window, on the glass substrate there are immobilized nanostructures being chemo-optical, gasochromic and interferometric transducer receptors, which can selectively interact with a specific type of gas molecules present in the gas mixture. When a physical-chemical binding process takes place on the sensing window of the measuring channel, an interferometric colour of the sensing element (nanostructure) changes and colour coordinates of the measured optical signal change as well. The change of the colour coordinates is proportional to the change of the effective refractive index of the receptor structure (particularly refractive index of the resonance cavity). By measuring the intensity change of the optical signal RGB, the refractive index change ?n taking place in the measuring window can be calculated and the concentration of a specific gas in the gas mixture can be measured.

Opis:
This paper analyses the effectiveness of determining gas concentrations by using a prototype WO3 resistive gas sensor together with fluctuation enhanced sensing. We have earlier demonstrated that this method can determine the composition of a gas mixture by using only a single sensor. In the present study, we apply Least-Squares Support-Vector-Machine-based (LS-SVM-based) nonlinear regression to determine the gas concentration of each constituent in a mixture. We confirmed that the accuracy of the estimated gas concentration could be significantly improved by applying temperature change and ultraviolet irradiation of the WO3 layer. Fluctuation-enhanced sensing allowed us to predict the concentration of both component gases.

Opis:
An array consisting of four commercial gas sensors with target specifications for hydrocarbons, ammonia, alcohol, explosive gases has been constructed and tested. The sensors in the array operate in the dynamic mode upon the temperature modulation from 350°C to 500°C. Changes in the sensor operating temperature lead to distinct resistance responses affected by the gas type, its concentration and the humidity level. The measurements are performed upon various hydrogen (17-3000 ppm), methane (167-3000 ppm) and propane (167-3000 ppm) concentrations at relative humidity levels of 0-75%RH. The measured dynamic response signals are further processed with the Discrete Fourier Transform. Absolute values of the dc component and the first five harmonics of each sensor are analysed by a feed-forward back-propagation neural network. The ultimate aim of this research is to achieve a reliable hydrogen detection despite an interference of the humidity and residual gases.

Opis:
The paper presents a numerical method of dynamic error correction applied to a measuring transducer of gas concentration with a typical sensor based on tin dioxide. The work describes research of the dynamic properties of the transducer. Its response time is approximately 8 to 10 minutes, which may be not acceptable in many applications. A parametric model of the transducer dynamics has been developed and an adequate correction algorithm is proposed. The obtained results of the dynamic correction based on the proposed method are compared with those achieved previously by applying a neural network algorithm. Despite the simplicity of the used model, the proposed method allows a significant decrease in the transducer response time.

Opis:
Opracowanie układu monitorującego w oparciu o palladowy czujnik zawartości oleju uprościło konstrukcję i obniżyło cenę takiego układu do poziomu uzasadniającego jego stosowanie do transformatorów średniej mocy.
Gas in oil monitoring devices for condition assessment of HV power-transformer insulation have been reviewed for their measuring characteristics, complexity of design and cost. More advanced, complex and expensive monitors have been installed on large and strategically important transformers. However, the medium-power transformers constitute majority of transformer population in electric-power systems, but the high price of monitoring devices prevented their application to the medium-power units. The recently designed inexpensive Hydrogen-in-oil monitor uses a Palladium alloy sensor that reduces complexity and cost of this monitor effectively. Installation of such a simple monitoring system on medium-power transformers is economically justified, in particular on units with service-aged paper-oil insulation. The paper describes on-line diagnostics of power transformers with various measuring devices. Such diagnostics is based on measurements of hydrogen, carbon oxides, gas chromatography, photo-acoustic gas spectrography.
