Opis:
The analysis of the characteristics that society considers to be characteristic of each gender is one of the oldest perspectives in the study of gender stereotypes. Bearing in mind the changes taking place in the lifestyles of modern women and men as well as the fact that each era creates its own specific image of femininity and masculinity, the respondents (N = 450) were asked about what they consider to be the characteristic features of modern women and men. In addition, they were asked to identify the characteristics that best describe them. Analysis of the responses showed that the respondents attributed to modern women characteristics indicating the stereotype of a career-focused woman, while in the case of the male respondents, the indicated attributes of a modern woman, were a combination of the stereotype of a female sex object and a businesswoman. In the opinions of both groups of respondents, the masculinity is based on the characteristics traditionally attributed to men, gently expanded characteristics of the stereotype of a man, i.e. a life partner who is involved in family life. The question about self-perception in terms of femininity and masculinity showed that the vast majority of women surveyed described themselves using traits considered as typically masculine or combining masculine and feminine traits. In contrast, when describing themselves, men chose traits characteristic of traditional masculinity, while traits associated with femininity (e.g., caring) were only supplementary.

Opis:
Gender stereotypes in kindergarden childrenThe aim of the research was to investigate the understanding of gender stereotypes among children aged 5–7. The questionnaire developed by Szmigielska (2009) was administered to thirty girls and twenty nine boys. It contains descriptions of gender-related psychological characteristics, everyday activities, professions, objects, and appearance. The results demonstrate that gender stereotypes shared by children concern mainly activities connected with a gender role. In the case of other tested variables, they were not regarded by children as gender-specific. The understanding of gender stereotypes among girls and boys did not exhibit any significant differences.

Opis:
After decades of research into disadvantages for girls in the educational system, “male underachievement” has recently become a frequently discussed topic in the social sciences. A glance at explanations for the development of gender differences in academic achievement reveals that the disadvantages for males and females are explained differently to some extent, but that gender stereotypes seem to play an important part in most popular theoretical approaches. This article gives an overview of actual gender differences in academic achievement in Europe. Following a short description of the nature and functioning of stereotypes in general, and of gender stereotypes in particular, the article discusses the current state of empirical research on the most important theoretical explanations for gender differences in academic achievement and the role gender stereotypes play in these theories. Finally, open questions – and thus fields for further research – are outlined.

Opis:
Purpose: The article presents the results of research on the frequency and content (varieties) of the stereotype that the accounting profession is a job for women. The research concerns Poland, a country with a unique level of feminisation of the accounting profession. Methodology/approach: To formulate hypotheses about the content (varieties) of the stereotype concerning the feminine character of accounting that exists in Poland, several mainly qualitative studies were carried out. As a result, four stereotypes were identified (i.e. different beliefs about why accounting is a profession for women and not for men). The hypotheses were tested using a survey of a representative group of Polish secondary school students (almost 1,200 respondents). Findings: The belief that the accounting profession is for women and not for men is expressed by one in six secondary school students, more often by men. Two stereotypes are particu-larly common: 1) that accounting is simply for women (without any specific justifica-tion), 2) that the most important aspects in this profession are accuracy, patience, meticulousness, the ability to focus on details, and other similar qualities usually attributed to women. Originality/value: For the first time in Poland (and probably in other East European countries with feminized accounting profession), the article provides new and up-to-date knowledge on the gender perception of the accounting profession and the stereotypes about this job which may be a significant driving force in sustaining gender segregation in this profession.

Opis:
The education system and its role in reproducing gender inequality have been discussed in different European countries for over 40 years. The research-based reports from 16 European countries delivered to European Commission within Exchange of Good Practice on Gender Equality forum created a unique opportunity to learn about the main themes, intensity and stages of development of gender and education discourse across Europe. The analysis of the situation in various countries revealed some differences and similarities in the approach to introducing gender in education between post-communist countries and countries with long-time history of gender equality debate. The areas of difference refer to social perception of gender, discrepancy between official legislation and practice, cooperation with educational authorities, textbooks contents and attitude to sexual education. The major similarities concern teachers’ awareness and attitudes, gender gap between boys and girls in scholastic achievements, segregation in vocational choice and feminization of teaching profession. The country overview allows to locate Poland on the map of this European discourse as well as to show inspiring examples coming from the countries far more developed in introducing gender sensitive mechanisms in educational practice.

Based upon the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, according to which language influences thought, we may affirm how social stereotypes remain bound by stereotyped usages of language. Hence, speaking is never neutral as it is underpinned by a way of thinking, of communicating, of being. The sexist usage of language encapsulates a function of emphasis at the semantic level and an obscuring function in morphological terms. We thus question what sexism in language means in order to inquire as to how the ways we make use of language may influence our ways of thinking and, consequently, our ways of acting.

Opis:
With participation in social life, all the interpersonal and intergroup relations an individual establishes takes places in accordance with his/her gender roles and gender identity attributed by society. In this respect, it can be suggested that all forms of relationships individuals establish with others are shaped in parallel with his/her gender identity. Therefore, it would not be wrong to argue that the gender identity an individual possesses in interpersonal relationships has a significant effect on the formation of the relationship established. One of the most important communication barriers confronted in the interpersonal communication process is stereotypes related to gender identity. Gender identity stereotypes emerge according to gender roles taught to each individual who joins society. The presence of these stereotypes turns into interpersonal communication barriers, which, in many cases, show their effects even before communication starts. In this regard, it is considered that addressing the content of stereotypes about the gender identity of the source and recipient as communication barriers in the communication process, is important. For this purpose, emphasis was laid primarily on the guiding effect of stereotypes in interpersonal processes within the scope of the study. Afterwards gender stereotypes were evaluated based on the findings of research conducted in this field, and with reference to characteristics of gender stereotypes.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to three basic problems: gender stereotypes, styles of sexual education and the relation between these two phenomena. The main question is: do the styles of sexual education experienced in a family determine the tendency to use gender stereotypes? Basing on the literature, a hypothetical model of relation between styles of sexual education and gender stereotypes was constructed. The model was a source of investigations conducted by the author and described in the paper. Young adults’ tendency to use gender stereotypes seems to be determined by their mothers’ stereotypes and by three styles of sexual education experienced in their families.
