Opis:
The 3rd edition of ShaleScience conference held on 9–10 June 2014 in Warsaw, Poland, was a very successful event. It was organized by Orlen Upstream and partner Institutions – EGI, AGH and INIG – under the Honorary Patronage of the Polish Ministry of Environment. The conference brought together world-class specialists in fields of geology, geophysics, geomechanics, drilling, reservoir completion and environmental protection. They all contributed greatly to a better understanding of the Polish shale reservoirs of moderate quality.

Opis:
Wherever industrial development exists, environmental pollution increases day by day. The heavy metals play an important role in soil and environmental pollutions and directly affect the human being lives. In this study, we determine pollutions resulting from heavy metal particles emanating from the brake discs pads of the vehicles on high ways and nearby factories. The field work was carried out in İzmir-Aliağa industrial area. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were done at a long profile crossing the İzmir-Çanakkale highway that goes through the study area. Here, we have determined the effect of heavy metals causing pollution in the surroundings. The studies indicate that the average acceptable values of magnetic susceptibility in such areas is about 0-50×10¯⁵ SI. Here we show that the magnetic susceptibility measurement values obtained along our study profile are about 18 times the acceptable ranges.

Opis:
Geology, geophysics and environmental protection sciences provide large amounts of data. These data can be stored in various structures. Most of them are stored in files. It is possible to store these data in databases. One example of databases for earth sciences is a Geokarpat database (Kotlarczyk et al. 1997). This database was developed over many years (Piórkowski & Gajda 2009). Other geological databases are, for example, database MIDAS (MIDAS 2015) and central database of the geological data (CBDG 2015). Solutions listed above are based on the relational data model. This model is not perfect for data analysis, as there are a lot of complicated relationships between the entities (Dominguez-Sal et al. 2010). A typical use of SQL in this case requires the creation of multiple joins and a large amount of calculations. Graph data model is gaining popularity because it allows representation similar to the natural network model of relationships between data (Horzyk 2013). Applications of this model within the earth sciences are extensive, including solutions for GIS systems. One of example graph application is the creation of a virtual generator of the city using database Neo4j (Płuciennik & Płuciennik-Psota 2014). Graph structure reproduces biological structure of memory well (Horzyk 2013). Based on this advantage, there are new opportunities to store and analyze geological data. The use of graphs to record those data enables data analyses in similar manner like in associative neural networks (Horzyk 2013). Geological stratum often has a complex structure, for example: around area of tectonic faults (often multiple faults in history), intrusive rocks in stratum. Possibilities of using graph databases for storing geological data were checked. This study focuses on proposing a graph representation of geological stratum. The proposed graph structure was implemented in the graph database. Presentation of the history of geological stratum in relational databases is difficult. Studies show an example of stratum graph model, which enables data mining of stratum history in easy method, because graph database systems are designed to make search queries to find similarity in data. Additionally, the results of this study demonstrated useful query. Moreover, software and possible methods of construction of graph models were studied. As shown by the results, an analysis of complex models of geological stratum can be less complicated. Research shows that finding dependences in the graph representation of the geological layers can be beneficial in geological analyses.

Opis:
The paper concerns GMT application for studies of the geophysical and geomorphological settings of the Weddell Sea. Its western part is occupied by the back-arc basin developed during geologic evolution of the Antarctic. The mapping presents geophysical settings reflecting tectonic formation of the region, glaciomarine sediment distribution and the bathymetry. The GlobSed grid highlighted the abnormally large thickness of sedimentary strata resulted from the long lasting sedimentation and great subsidence ratio. The sediment thickness indicated significant influx (>13,000m) in the southern segment. Values of 6,000–7,000 m along the peninsula indicate stability of the sediments influx. The northern end of the Filchner Trough shows increased sediment supply. The topography shows variability -7,160–4,763 m. The ridges in the northern segment and gravity anomalies (>75 mGal) show parallel lines stretching NW-SE (10°–45°W, 60°–67°S) which points at the effects of regional topography. The basin is dominated by the slightly negative gravity >-30 mGal. The geoid model shows a SW-NE trend with the lowest values <18 m in the south, the highest values >20m in the NE and along the Coats Land. The ripples in the north follow the geometry of the submarine ridges and channels proving correlation with topography and gravitational equipotential surface.
