Opis:: Aim/purpose – The main objectives of this article are to identify the major risks with a global dimension and to attempt to specify the potential consequences of their occurrence for organizational management. Design/methodology/approach – The article is based on an analysis of the literature on the subject and an analysis of the content of The Global Risk Reports published in the years 2013-2017, prepared within the scope of the World Economic Forum, and presenting the results of work performed by international experts. Findings – The major results of the research are the following: 1) becoming aware of how global risks are understood, 2) identifying the most significant present risks of a global character, as well as tendencies in changes in their importance, and 3) determining general possibilities of the identified risks’ exerting influence on organizational management processes. Research implications/limitations – The research results are based on a selected group of reports illustrating the result of the work of experts performed within the scope of the World Economic Forum. Thus, there is a possibility of an alternative approach to global risks, e.g., in reports drawn up for the purposes of the insurance sector. However, the authors decided that the aforementioned reports were the most reliable and representative from the perspective of this article’s objectives. Originality/value/contribution – The article shows global risks as a determinant of management processes and includes reflection about their significance.

Opis:: Systematic analysis based on the assumption of rational behaviour of human being in addition to the mathematical models is based on the inherent factors in quantification of global risks. Decisions are made based on all available information, to act in order to maximize the utility. However, the current state of global quantification of risks based on the probability of economic loss scenarios, rationality of action in emergencies excludes and puts to the forefront scenarios likelihood and severity based on information asymmetry. If all risk takers were fully informed, it would avoid the moral hazard and the amount of individual risks would be stable in the global context.

Opis:: Objectives Web information systems may serve as a diagnostic tool for the Internet users and they also support the epidemiological work of doctors and health care providers. As part of this study, a system has been created for detecting and calculating cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study has been the comparison of cardiovascular risk factors and calculated fatal cardiovascular risk in 2 periods of time: 2004–2009 and 2010–2015 in Poland, as determined via the Internet. Material and Methods The “Ryzyko program” (“Risk program”) is available on the website of the Medical University of Gdańsk. To assess the cardiovascular death risk in a 10-year period, the algorithm of the SCORE (Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation) project was used and 30 402 results of the algorithm have been analyzed. Results Over 30 402 webpage visitors entered the required data and received the outcome. More than 78% of the Internet users who had entered the data, received a recommendation for medical check-up. Significant differences between the data collected in 2004– 2009 and 2010–2015 were noticed. Hypercholesterolemia prevalence (67.3% vs. 70.8%; p < 0.001), mean total cholesterol concentration in blood (5.60±1.65 mml/l vs. 5.66±1.35 mml/l; p < 0.001), prevalence of hypertension (36.6% vs. 35.3%; p = 0.039), mean systolic blood pressure (131.5±20.3 mm Hg vs. 132.6±18.0 mm Hg; p < 0.001), prevalence of declared smoking (30.7% vs. 26.5%; p < 0.001), declared diabetes mellitus (DM) (6.4% vs. 9.7%; p < 0.001), and declared coronary artery disease (CAD) (7.2% vs. 14.1%; p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusions The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors has changed during the observed period of time. Online automatic gathering of new data by “Ryzyko program” provides up-to-date observations. Opis:: Research background: In the last decades social responsible investment has evolved into an important and influential investment class. What supports then the development of SRI? The neoclassical approach suggests that the attractiveness of investment should result from the risk-return relationship that is satisfying for the investor. However, the performance analysis of SRI vs. conventional investment, conducted in numerous research papers, often delivers contradictory conclusions. If financial factors could not explain the phenomenon of SRI, nonfinancial factors may have played a decisive role in the formation of modern SRI market. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to analyze financial investment performance of socially responsible vs. respective conventional indices in the periods of high, low and unidentified global risk. Therefore, a following research hypothesis was verified: SR indices perform financially better in high-risk periods than in low-risk periods. This hypothesis is justified by the assumption that, when selecting SRI, investors go by a longer investment horizon than they do when selecting other investments, not subject to such verification. Methods: Among SR indices, we chose three to compare them with their conventional counterparts: DJSI US vs. DJITR (USA), DJSI Korea vs. KOSPI (South Korea) and Respect Index vs. WIG20TR (Poland). The VIX index was used as the global measure of risk aversion. To measure the relative performance of SR and conventional indices in different risk periods, we applied risk-adjusted performance measures, including RSD, Sharpe and Treynor ratios, traditional and asymmetrical CAPM. Findings & Value added: The research shows that conventional and socially responsible indices do not differ statistically in terms of risk and return irrespective of global risk. Our research confirms that the rising, socially responsible, investment market cannot be analyzed only through the prism of simplified rational choices. Additionally, it should be analyzed in terms of moral philosophy and behavioral economics, including the psycho-social features of investors.

Opis:: The study begins with a chronological review of research on risk in various countries and then investigates relationships between the general scientific theory and the use of scientific methodology in this discipline. In this part of the essay, focus is on the essence of experiential learning in relation to diversified risks. The issue is presented primarily to improve risk measurement tools. Another point of the essay is to indicate an interdisciplinary study of diversified risks, including strategies to limit global risks, and emerging risks to the environment. In this context, the Human Choice and Climate Change Report is presented with new methods for testing risk. Studies under risk and risk management are perceived as transdisciplinary with an assumption that this approach is more complete than an interdisciplinary one. The essay concludes with a discussion of the responsibility of scientists for further research on risk and the consequences of progress in science. It is also an introduction to research on the philosophy of risk.
W opracowaniu tym został dokonany chronologiczny przegląd badań prowadzonych nad ryzykiem, a następnie analiza relacji występujących między teorią nauki w odniesieniu do ryzyka oraz wykorzystania metodologii naukowej w tej nowej dyscyplinie. W szczególności przedstawione zostało zagadnienie doskonalenia narzędzi pomiaru ryzyka. Prowadzone są również wstępne rozważania nad interdyscyplinarnym badaniem zdywersyfikowanego ryzyka. Przedstawione zostały w nim strategie zmierzające do ograniczenia globalnego ryzyka i powstających zagrożeń dla środowiska naturalnego wykorzystując tu raport Human Choice and Climate Change. Nie można też było pominąć kwestii eksplozji informacji i jej wpływu na dalsze badania ryzyka, a także znaczenia modnych obecnie badań transdyscyplinarnych. Esej kończy próba odpowiedzi na pytanie dotyczące odpowiedzialności uczonych za skutki prowadzonych badań. Stanowi także wprowadzenie do badań nad filozofią ryzyka.

Opis:: Termin "społeczeństwo ryzyka" został wprowadzony do słownictwa nauk społecznych w latach osiemdziesiątych przez niemieckiego socjologa Ulricha Becka. Obecnie - jako obywatele - żyjemy w "burzliwym świecie", w którym w coraz większym stopniu wszystko zależy od wszystkiego albo na jakiejś drobnostce, która wszystko zmienia, która wydaje się stabilna i stała. Współczesne wymiary ryzyka są następujące: a) charakter globalny, b) wieloznaczne interpretacje, c) niewyraźna odpowiedzialność, d)orientacja na przyszłość, e) orientacja na bezpieczeństwo. W Internecie rejestrowane są obecnie następujące rodzaje ryzyka: a) naruszenie prywatności, b) monopol i cenzura informacji, c) dewaluacja i podtopienie informacji, d) wykluczenie cyfrowe, e) przestępczość komputerowa, f)terroryzm i globalny strach, g) cyberterroryzm. Społeczeństwo ryzyka przechodzi dynamiczną, progresywną modernizację i rozwój technologiczny, a jednocześnie jest narażone na coraz większe zagrożenia.
The term "risk society" was introduced into the vocabulary of social sciences in the 1980s by German sociologist Ulrich Beck. Currently as citizens we live in a "turbulent world", in which to an ever-greater degree, everything depends on everything either on some trifle, which changes everything, which appears to be stable and constant. The contemporary dimensions of risk are the following: a) global character, b) multiple interpretations, c) blurred responsibility, d) oriented on the future, e) orientation on security. On Internet the following types of risks are currently registering: a) violation on privacy, b) monopoly and censorship of information, c) information devaluation and inundation, d) digital exclusion, e) computer crime, f) terrorism and global fear, g) cyber-terrorism. The risk society is undergoing a dynamic, progressive modernization and technological development, and at the same time is also a subject to ever-increasing threats.

Opis:: The purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate relevance of global systemically important banks (G-SIBs) in the context of Polish financial sector. This aspect is often overlooked, as there are no G-SIBs based in Poland. Methodology: Abovementioned aim is fulfilled by aims of providing an overview of the international characteristics and regulation of G-SIBs, describing the interrelations between these entities and institutions operating in the Polish market, and by showing how these connections can change the financial sector in Poland both directly and indirectly. The analysis is based on international standards on G-SIBs published by the Financial Stability Board and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, as well as on EU legal acts implementing these documents. Additional sources on the „indirect” functioning of G-SIBs in Poland encompass annual reports of the entities linked to them, management reports on their activities, as well as articles and Internet data. Results of the research: G-SIBs influence Polish financial sector in several different ways. First, G-SIB-oriented regulation and supervision has an impact on Polish entities that are linked to them. Second, even indirect presence of G-SIBs is economically significant.
