Opis:: Although there is a relatively rich bibliography which discusses Polish guides for adults, much less has been written about an analogous type of book but for young recipients. This article examines the contemporary Polish guides for children and young adults around Krakow. Such type of publications had not existed up to 60's when "The Cracovian alphabet" by Wanda Chotomska and Jan Marcin Szancer appeared. In this paper the seventeen books are analised. The author divides the research material into five use categories and then overtalks its content, artwork, technique of making and functionality.
Chociaż istnieje stosunkowo bogata bibliografia, która omawia polskie przewodniki dla dorosłych, to jednak znacznie mniej zostało napisane o analogicznym typie książek, ale dla młodego odbiorcy. Niniejsza praca bada współczesne polskie przewodniki dla dzieci i młodzieży po Krakowie. Taki typ publikacji nie istniał aż do lat 60. XX wieku, kiedy to pojawiło się „Abecadło krakowskie” autorstwa Wandy Chotomskiej i Jana Marcina Szancera. W tej pracy jest analizowanych siedemnaście książek. Autorka dzieli materiał badawczy na pięć kategorii i omawia jego treść, szatę graficzną, sposób wykonania i funkcjonalność.

Opis:: The essay is excerpted from a chapter of a book that is currently being written by the author. The working title of the book is Spacery po kościołach rzymskich [Walks through historical churches and temples of Rome] (Wydawnictwo Zeszytów Literackich). The present essay aims at discussing the specific character of the Christian church architecture of the city of Rome that constitutes nodes of a network that has been developing throughout one and a half millennia. Each of the chapters of the book is centered around a particular walk of the town that includes on its way the described churches. The walks cover virtually the whole of the old town and some of the adjacent palaces. The adopted method of presentation is purely personal and has a character of a “Roman diary” — to some extent, the author has been inspired by Promenades das Rome by Stendhal. The diary is, however, a particular guide book on the town for those who want to experience something else that the offer presented by standard guidebooks. Notwithstanding it subjective angle, the book does not interfere in passing the essential historical and artistic knowledge to the reader. Rome appears here to be a singular place, as a personification of one of the most important stages of Western civilization.

Opis:: Guidebooks are practical texts that accompany people in navigating through an unknown space. Along with guiding and helping in the logistic organisation of the trip, they narrate the story of the selected place, city or region. Due to this last function, guidebooks can be a valuable source in historical research. Referring to Moscow and Kyiv Soviet guidebooks, the paper discusses the connection between text composition and historical narrative. Using the methodology of semiotics, the article shows that different elements of city space such as houses, streets, monuments, museums etc. communicate messages about history, society, and identity. Since the city space is a big “warehouse” of objects and meanings, not all of them will be incorporated into the tourist space. The article shows which places were included (but also excluded) in Moscow and Kyiv tourist routes and depicts their connection with the canon of historical events. The paper also looks more closely at the ideological and rhetorical features of guidebook texts and how they reflect the dominant historical narrative.

Writing about walking: the works of Enrico Brizzi.

Opis:: Nowadays, travel literature has aroused considerable interest in the publishing industry. The predominant part of its texts consist of reportages and reports from pedestrian journeys, written by wanderer who walked on tracks frequented by pilgrims and merchants in the old days. The author of the present paper focuses on writings of the Italian author Enrico Brizzi; works which concern the theme of wandering: the trilogy of road novels and the report from a journey, written as a guide book.The philosophy and the essence of wandering, as well as the impact on the traveler’s perception of the world, are discussed as a groundwork of further deliberation. Based on Brizzi’s writings, the author analyzes traveling by foot in literature: both in terms of topics chosen by a travel writer and genres realized by his texts (a hybrid form which oscillates between travel reportage, diary, guide book, autobiographical novel and detective novel). The paper is supplemented with an interview with Brizzi.
La letteratura di viaggio gode oggigiorno di un grande interesse dei lettori. Un gruppo importante di testi che fanno parte di questa letteratura è costituito da reportage e relazioni di viaggi a piedi, intrapresi sulle orme di pellegrini e mercanti medievali. Nella tesi viene presentata la parte della produzione letteraria di Enrico Brizzi, che ha il cammino come tema: una trilogia di romanzi on the road e racconti di viaggio sotto la forma di libri-guida. Apre le considerazioni la riflessione sulla filosofia del camminare e sulla caratteristica del cammino e su come questa forma di viaggio possa influire sulla percezione del viandante. Sull'esempio delle opere brizziane viene analizzata la realizzazione narrativa del topos del cammino: sia per quanto riguarda i temi affrontati dallo scrittore-viaggiatore che per quanto riguarda la forma ibrida dei testi la quale oscilla tra i generi come guida, reportage o diario di viaggio, romanzo autobiografico e giallo. Il lavoro viene completato dall'intervista a Enrico Brizzi realizzata dall’autrice.

They not only add to our understanding and knowledge of this fascinating field, but also inspire us to look into the various dimensions not yet explored by other researchers. A truly imaginative and inspiring mind, hers has been a significant contribution to models of multiple language acquisition, the theory of affordances (Singleton & Aronin, 2007), and the material culture of multilingualism, not to forget – what I consider to be her biggest and most fascinating area of research – dominant language constellations (Aronin & Vetter, 2021; Lo Bianco & Aronin, 2020,) and also, fairly recently and still at the developmental stage, the philosophy of multilingualism (Aronin & Politis, 2015).

Polish books on the topic of household issued in the years 1800-1914.

Opis:: Books on the topic of household issued in the years 1800-1914 are a group of specific publications as far as the content and external features are concerned. These include cookbooks and household guide books, found in Polish bibliographies. Editorial features, construction and content of these books were analyzed using bibliographic methods. All information, which was found in historical sources, was analyzed and compared. Special attention was paid to authors and publishers, titles, prices, size and volume, as well as the construction of title cards and content structure of these publications. The results of the analysis were used to determine the unique attributes of cookbooks and household guide books, which made them so popular and well-selling in the nineteenth century.
Książki dotyczące gospodarstwa domowego wydane w latach 1800-1914 stanowią grupę wydawnictw specyficznych pod względem zawartych w nich treści oraz odmiennych z punktu widzenia formalno-wydawniczego. Zaliczono do nich poradniki domowe i książki kucharskie, zgromadzone w toku przeszukiwania polskich bibliografii. Za pomocą metody bibliograficznej zanalizowano cechy wydawnicze oraz scharakteryzowano budowę i zawartość tych publikacji. Zwrócono uwagę na autorów i wydawców, tytuły, ceny, wygląd i objętość, a także na budowę kart tytułowych i układ treści omawianych dzieł. Uzyskany w ten sposób zestaw danych, stanowił podstawę do określenia, jakie wyjątkowe atrybuty książek kucharskich i poradników domowych z tego okresu, stały się przyczyną popularności i doprowadziły do sukcesu wydawniczego tej grupy publikacji.

Evaluation of teachers books and supporting materials in English language coursebook packages for the seventh grade of Polish elementary school

Opis:: Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest ewaluacja ośmiu książek dla nauczyciela, które wchodzą w skład zestawów podręcznikowych do języka angielskiego dla klasy siódmej szkoły podstawowej w Polsce. Badanie skupia się na tym, ile faktycznie pomocy zapewnia nauczycielowi wydawca podręcznika. W badaniu przede wszystkim oceniane są książki nauczyciela, ale dodatkowo badane są też inne komponenty zestawu podręcznikowego. W praktyce każda z ośmiu książek nauczyciela (wraz z dodatkowymi materiałami) jest oceniana pod względem czterdziestu jeden kryteriów. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów, dwóch teoretycznych i jednego praktycznego. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest podręcznikom w nauczaniu języka angielskiego. W rozdziale tym opisana jest rola jaką pełnią podręczniki w nauczaniu, ich wady i zalety oraz cele i rodzaje ewaluacji podręczników. Kolejny rozdział skupia się na książkach nauczyciela oraz ich ewaluacji w nauczaniu języków obcych. Mimo, że temat książek nauczyciela jest niezwykle zaniedbany w literaturze fachowej, w oparciu o dostępne źródła, opisane są ich funkcje oraz wady i zalety. Poza książkami nauczyciela w rozdziale tym przedstawione są również inne materiały dodatkowe jakimi dysponuje nauczyciel. Ostatnią część rozdziału stanowi dokładny przegląd piśmiennictwa na temat ewaluacji książek nauczyciela. Trzeci, ostatni rozdział dotyczy praktycznego badania przeprowadzonego na podanym zbiorze książek nauczyciela oraz towarzyszącym im materiałom dodatkowym. W rozdziale tym zawarte jest uzasadnienie przeprowadzenia badania oraz użytej metody. Podane są również cele i pytanie badawcze oraz wyniki wraz z analizą. Ostatnim punktem pracy są sugestie dotyczące możliwych, przyszłych badań w tej właśnie dziedzinie.
The main objective of this thesis is the evaluation of eight teacher’s books that accompany English coursebooks for the seventh grade of elementary school in Poland. In addition to the teacher’s book, supporting materials included in the coursebook package are analyzed. The study focuses on the actual amount of the teaching aids provided by the publisher for the teacher. Teacher’s books (with their coursebook packages) are analyzed with respect to forty one criteria.The thesis’ structure consists of three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to coursebooks in ELT. In this chapter, the role of the coursebook, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as, the purpose and types of coursebook evaluation are presented. The next chapter deals with the teacher’s book and its evaluation in language teaching. In this chapter, it is indicated that this topic has been neglected in the professional literature. However, based on the available sources, the function of the teacher’s book, as well as its advantages and disadvantages are described. The last section covers the review of the available literature on teacher’s books evaluation. The final chapter describes the practical study carried out on the set of teacher’s books (and their supporting materials). It provides the rationale for the study and the method used, describes the study’s aims and the research question, as well as gives the results with analysis. As a final remark, some suggestions concerning the possible future studies are provided.
