Opis:
Úwù is one of the many endangered languages in Nigeria {(Abiodun (2004, 2007); Choon (2012)}. The language is spoken by an estimated population of about 3000 people in a small community known as Àyèré in Ìjùmú Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, Crozier and Blench (1992). There is an ongoing controversy over the status of the language as to whether it is a dialect of Yorùbá or a distinct language. This is due to the lexical and structural similarities between the two linguistic codes. This paper describes the vowel harmony system of Úwù with a view to showing its level of relatedness to Yoruba, and by implication documents this aspect of the language for posterity. Harmonic constraint in Úwù is based on tongue root positions where ATR mid-vowels do not interact with RTR mid-vowels in a phonological word. Harmonic principle in Úwù is most reflected in words of VCV and CVCV structures. The analysis of selected data is premised on the Autosegmental Theory of Phonology {see (Hulst and Smith 1985); (Goldsmith 1990)}. The study reveals that Úwù operates a seven vowel system that manifests a partial harmony system, comprising of seven oral and five nasal vowels. Apart from this, the language operates a root-controlled assimilation process, and the direction of harmonic spread in Úwù is leftward, since affixes in Úwù are mainly prefixes. Although, there are few instances that suggest that neutral vowels are both opaque and transparent in Úwù, the paper concludes that neutral vowels are actually opaque in the language.

Remarks on the phonology of the transitional period of Northwestern Karaim
Kuzeybatı Karaycasının geçiş dönemi fonolojisi üzerine notlar
Autorzy:
Stachowski, Kamil
Opis:
The paper presents some thoughts on the phonology of Northwestern Karaim during its transition from vowel to consonant harmony, that were enabled and spurred by a recent discovery of an 18th century manuscript. It advocates a greater inclusion of the diachronic perspective in synchronic endeavours, and the concession of the notion of multiple phonologies coexisting and cooperating in one period.

The discussion on consonant harmony in northwestern Karaim
Autorzy:
Stachowski, Kamil
Opis:
During more than a century of investigation, northwestern Karaim has been labelled as being consonant-, vowel- and syllable-harmonical. The present paper attempts at summarizing the debate and drawing some conclusions from it. Views of 36 researchers are presented chronologically together with a commentary and information on their impact on our discussion.

Opis:
In a recent paper del Valle-Inclan and Schlöder argue that bilateral calculi call for their own notion of proof-theoretic harmony, distinct from the usual (or ‘unilateral’) ones. They then put forward a specifically bilateral criterion of harmony, and present a harmonious bilateral calculus for classical logic. In this paper, I show how del Valle-Inclan and Schlöder’s criterion of harmony suggests a notion of normal form for bilateral systems, and prove normalisation for two (harmonious) bilateral calculi for classical logic, HB1 and HB2. The resulting normal derivations have the usual desirable features, like the separation and subformula properties. HB1-normal form turns out to be strictly stronger that the notion of normal form proposed by Nils Kürbis, and HB2-normal form is neither stronger nor weaker than a similar proposal by Marcello D’Agostino, Dov Gabbay, and Sanjay Modgyl.

Opis:
Proof-theoretic semantics is an inferentialist theory of meaning originally developed in a unilateral framework. Its extension to bilateral systems opens both opportunities and problems. The problems are caused especially by Coordination Principles (a kind of rule that is not present in unilateral systems) and mismatches between rules for assertion and rules for rejection. In this paper, a solution is proposed for two major issues: the availability of a reduction procedure for tonk and the existence of harmonious rules for the paradoxical zero-ary connective \(\bullet\). The solution is based on a reinterpretation of bilateral rules as complex rules, that is, rules that introduce or eliminate connectives in a subordinate position. Looking at bilateral rules from this perspective, the problems faced by bilateralism can be seen as special cases of general problems of complex systems, which have been already analyzed in the literature. In the end, a comparison with other proposed solutions underlines the need for further investigation in order to complete the picture of bilateral proof-theoretic semantics.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest rozwiązanie odwrotnego zagadnienia przewodnictwa ciepła z warunkiem brzegowym trzeciego rodza- ju przy użyciu niedawno zaproponowanego algorytmu „Harmony Search” (poszukiwania harmonii). Zastosowany algorytm należy do grupy algoryt- mów optymalizacyjnych inspirowanych zachowaniami bądź procesami za- chodzącymi w rzeczywistym świecie, w szczególności imituje proces poszu- kiwania harmonii dźwięków podczas improwizacji jazzowej.

This article is an attempt to establish the time-frame and relative chronology of the evolution of consonant harmony in north-western Karaim. The sample material used for the present article comes from a Karaim handwritten Torah translation dating back to 1720 (the oldest analysed Western Karaim Bible translation), copied in Kukizów by Simcha ben Chananiel and written in the Karaim semi-cursive variant of the Hebrew script. Additionally, in the present article an attempt is made to describe step by step how the harmony shift operated.

Opis:
Subject of this dissertation is worldview of Johannes Kepler – scientist well known as a discoverer of three laws of planetary motion. I analyse topic Harmony of the Spheres – form Pythagoras, Plato, Boethius and Renaissance philosophes and compare with Kepler‘s. I consider how Kepler’s building of Universe change his vision of God and men and relation between them. Motherlode of this thesis is an evolution Kepler’s views about harmony.

Opis:
Desirable sound of music has a wide range of psychological and physiological beneficial health effect among diverse population in different conditions. Research for example showed when music is selected according to its motivational qualities, the positive impact on performance (e.g., increased endurance) and psychological states (e.g., enhanced affect) are even greater, which has important implications for exercise adherence in male and female participants. On the other hand, healing sounds have always been considered in the past an important aid in medical practice, and nowadays, medicine has confirmed the efficacy of music therapy in clinical setting and in aging population. It seems healing harmony as a source of inspiration in science is an effective approach to improve quality of life in different individuals. Hence, music intervention as an easily, inexpensive, noninvasive approach to improve public health is notably recommended
