Opis:
Traditionally, methods of measuring tree height use the distance from a person, or instrument, to the trunk and the angle at which the top or the highest visible point in the canopy can be seen. However, such measurements sometimes give wrong results as the highest visible point in the crown may hide the actual top of the tree. Besides, the location of the tree may be challenging. Also, not always professional equipment is accessible. Here, selected traditional and modern methods of measuring a tree height are presented. Short descriptions of the photographic method, the “indented” measurement and the method which uses the comparison between the height of a tree and the sunʼs position are presented.

Opis:
Black alder is naturally widespread across all of Europe and has an increasing importance for forest ecosystems. Thanks to the considerable tolerance to adverse climatic and edaphic environmental conditions black alder is important both in open landscapes and can also be involved in the rehabilitation of disturbed soils. Assessment of site productivity is essential for providing a frame of reference for silvicultural diagnosis and prescription in order to ensure the sustainability of existing and newly established ecosystems. The most accepted method of evaluating site productivity is the site index (SI). The aim of the presented research was to develop the SI model for black alder in southern Poland. The developed SI model was used as a tool in order to test the research hypothesis assuming the increase in site productivity for black alder in southern Poland. The research material for development of SI model were stem analysis data from 180 research plots. Both, the local model parameter, which was estimated individually for every tree, and the other parameters estimated globally for the whole data set were estimated simultaneously. Changes in site productivity were analyzed on research plots and a set of 12,974 stands from the forest inventory database. Site indices calculated using the developed model are negatively correlated with age/ positively correlated with establishment year of the stands. This confirms the existence of the phenomenon of increasing site productivity for black alder. During the last century site productivity measured with site index increased on average 5 m. Therefore, black alder that belongs to the fast-growing tree species should be considered of the increasing importance for forest management.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to estimate the height of roughness element (ZH) and zero-displacement length (Zd) for Baghdad city using remote sensing and GIS techniques and resources such as DEM, DSM, and shapefile. The difference between DEM and DSM produced digital height model which represents the height of the roughness element for the region, which was used to determine the zero-displacement height. The results showed that the variations in Zd values depend strongly on ZH. Rusafa had the highest Zd (15.8 m) while Dora had the lowest values (4.7 m). Thus, Baghdad city has medium density classification according to the results of Zd and ZH values.

Opis:
The paper presents assessment results of the accuracy of uniform height curves developed for mountain spruce stands of Poland [Bruchwald, Wróblewski 1994]. The empirical material was collected in 171 spruce stands in Beskid Zachodni. Moreover, the relationship between the errors of uniform height curves and dendrometric characteristics of stands was also analysed. The research results demonstrated that the accuracy of uniform height curves is close to the accuracy obtained by applying the height curve developed for a given stand.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to describe, by means of regression models, the relationships between average height and top height in mountain spruce stands. In the framework of the research, the relationship between average height and top heights determined on the basis of 100 and 250 thickest trees per ha was described. Regression formulas allowing conversion of given heights were developed. Also the height conversion method was proposed based on the percentage difference between heights where the number of trees per ha was used.

Opis:
The dedicated gravity satellite missions, in particular the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) mission launched in 2002, provide unique data for studying temporal variations of mass distribution in the Earth’s system, and thereby, the geometry and the gravity fi eld changes of the Earth. The main objective of this contribution is to estimate physical height (e.g. the orthometric/normal height) changes over Central Europe using GRACE satellite mission data as well as to analyse them and model over the selected study area. Physical height changes were estimated from temporal variations of height anomalies and vertical displacements of the Earth surface being determined over the investigated area. The release 5 (RL05) GRACE-based global geopotential models as well as load Love numbers from the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) were used as input data. Analysis of the estimated physical height changes and their modelling were performed using two methods: the seasonal decomposition method and the PCA/ EOF (Principal Component Analysis/Empirical Orthogonal Function) method and the differences obtained were discussed. The main fi ndings reveal that physical height changes over the selected study area reach up to 22.8 mm. The obtained physical height changes can be modelled with an accuracy of 1.4 mm using the seasonal decomposition method.

Opis:
In this study, several variants create and choose of a local quasi-geoid model in Poland have been considered. All propositions have a source in European Gravimetric Geoid models – EGG2008 and EGG2015, which are purely gravimetric models of reference surface. In the course of this work, each model has been analyzed in various ways: without any corrections, by parallel shifting of residuals, by the 7-parameter conformal transformation and by fitting residuals by 4- and 5-parameter trigonometric polynomials. Eventual corrections were based on points of national GNSS/levelling networks (EUVN, EUVN_DA, POLREF, EUREF and ASG-EUPOS eccentric points). As a final result of this study, a comparison of the accuracy of selected models has been carried out by RMSE statistics and maps showing spatial distribution of residuals and histograms. Validation has shown that the maximum achievable accuracy of the EGG models is approximately 2 cm for the ETRF2000 reference system and approximately 8 cm for ETRF89. In turn, fitting with the use of different mathematical methods results in an improvement of the standard deviation of residues to the level of 1.3–1.4 cm. The conclusions include an evaluation of considerations for and against the use of models based only on EGG realizations and, on the other hand, fitted to the points of Polish vertical network. Its usefulness is strictly connected with needs of the definition of up to date quasi-geoid model for the new realization of heights system in Poland, based on EVRF2007 frame.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of studies on the variability of selected features of the morphological structure of Scots pine trees, introduced on the post-mining lands in Piaseczno reclaimed for forestry. The field research was conducted in 2014 in the north-western part of a waste dump, on one-are circular sample plots. These plots were established in three groups, depending on the type of a substrate and the implemented reclamation treatments (1 – the Quaternary loose sands, 2 – mixed sediments of the Quaternary loose sands and the Tertiary Krakowiec clays, 3 – mixed sediments of the Quaternary loose sands and the Tertiary Krakowiec clays after an intensive preplant fertilization). The Scots pine trees introduced on the reclaimed dump displayed various crown structures and growth parameters. The longest and the widest crowns were recorded for the pine trees growing on mixed sediments of sands and clays, whereas the trees growing on loose sands had the smallest diameters at breast height.
