Opis:: Postmodernizm w polskiej architekturze pojawił się z wyraźnym opóźnieniem w stosunku do jego przykładów w Europie Zachodniej i w Stanach Zjednoczonych, bowiem po XIV Kongresie Międzynarodowej Unii Architektów (UIA), który odbył się w Warszawie w 1981 roku. Ten nurt, choć nie reprezentowany przez wszystkich projektantów, charakteryzował się niezwykle mocną siłą jego intelektualnego oddziaływania oraz zmianą klimatu estetycznego. Spowodował przełamanie monopolu masowego budownictwa uspołecznionego na rzecz indywidualnych inwestycji przy zasadniczej zmianie organizacji procesu projektowania i realizacji. Najbardziej wartościowe i charakterystyczne przykłady owych eksperymentów należałoby zachować dla przyszłości jako dowód awangardowych działań architektów w naszym kraju od początku lat osiemdziesiątych XX wieku, które propagowały spojrzenie w przeszłość oraz wielokrotnie honorowały historyczny kontekst nowych realizacji.
Postmodernism occurred in the Polish architecture with a clear delay compared to its examples in Western Europe and the United States of America, because only after the 14th Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA), which was held in Warsaw in 1981. This trend, although not represented by all designers, was characterised by an extremely strong power of its intellectual influence and a change of the aesthetic climate. It broke a monopole of mass social construction for the benefit of individual investments with an essential change in the organisation of the process of design and its implementation. The most valuable and characteristic examples of such experiments should be preserved for the future as evidence of avant-garde steps of architects in our country since the early 1980s, which propagated taking a look back and frequently dealt with the historical context of new projects.

Opis:: Analiza współczesnej architektury w zabytkowym środowisku pozwala na stwierdzenie, że jest możliwe wznoszenie nowych wartości do zabytkowego środowiska przestrzennego dzięki realizacji współczesnych form architektonicznych, które tworząc dobre relacje z zabytkowymi obiektami, umożliwiają jednocześnie lepsze eksponowanie ich walorów. Szczególnie istotne w tych działaniach staje się posiadanie w realizowanych nowych formach dodatkowych wartości, uzyskanych przez twórczą interpretację tradycji i klimatu miejsca, charakterystycznych faktur i materiałów, które związane są z konkretnym obszarem działań inwestycyjnych. Bryła nowego Teatru Szekspirowskiego w Gdańsku to podłużny korpus, właściwie o cechach minimalistycznych, ale ze szkarpami. Owe szkarpy pokazujące grę światła i cienia na elewacjach to charakterystyczny element architektury gotyckiej, występujący w gdańskich kościołach, z których wiele, jak twierdzi Renato Rizzi – autor projektu z Włoch – było budowanych z ciemnej cegły, takiej jak nowy teatr. Zatem odwołanie do przeszłości jawi się tutaj nie tylko w sposób obrazowy, ale również intelektualny.
The analysis of Contemporary architecture in historic environment allows to state that it is possibile to introduce new values to special historic environment thanks to the implementation of contemporary architectural forms, which by establishing good relations with historic object, at the same time allow to expose their values in a more effective way. An aspect that becomes particularly important in such efforts is possessing additional values in the new forms, obtained by the creative interpretation of the tradition and climate of the place, characteristic textures and materials which are connected with a specifi c place of investment activities. The new Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre building is an elongated shape exhibiting in fact the features of minimalist architecture, but with buttresses surrounded by a 6-meter high wall. The buttresses the play of light and shadow on the facades, are a characteristic component of Gothic architecture present in the churches of Gdańsk, many of which according to Renato Rizzi – author of theatre from Italy – were built of dark bricks, such as the new building of theatre. Thus, the reference to the past appears of visual but also of intellectual nature.

Opis:: Artykuł przedstawia problem współczesnych rozwiązań głównie wielorodzinnej architektury mieszkaniowej, lokalizowanej w centrum historycznym Gdańska nad Motławą oraz na Wyspie Spichrzów. Konkursy architektoniczne, warsztaty i dyskusje wśród środowisk profesjonalnych, dotyczące omawianych terenów, trwały w Gdańsku od lat. Tradycja i klimat miejsca w tkankach miast historycznych staje się wartością nadrzędną. Nowe formy inspirowane historycznymi kształtami są nieraz trudniejsze do zaakceptowania przez odbiorców, którzy nie zawsze mogą domyśleć się intelektualnych przemyśleń projektanta. Muszą się z nimi powoli oswajać.
The article presents the problem of contemporary solutions primarily concerning multi-family residential architecture located in the historical centre of Gdańsk on the Motława River and on Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Isle). Architectural competitions, workshops and discussions in professional circles focusing on this area have been taking place in Gdańsk for years. Tradition and the atmosphere of the place in the urban tissue of historical cities becomes a priority value. New forms inspired by historical shapes are often more difficult to accept by the audience, which does not necessarily need to recognise a designer’s intellectual reflections. They need to slowly become accustomed to them.

The presence of the Portuguese language in the Senegalese province of Casamance : a cultural heritage on the verge of extinction or in revival?

Opis:: The article explains, on a socio-historical basis, how the region of Casamance in southern Senegal acquired its dual Portuguese-French character, underlining the role of the Portuguese language in this process. It briefly outlines the history of the territory and shows how it contributed to the specific ethnic and cultural nature of the region, where, in the second half of the 20th century, a separatist sentiment began to grow. It also discusses the role of Portuguese in the region through the centuries and the emergence of its local Creole, trying to explain how they both served as an instrument of communication throughout history and how their role changed with the independence of the Senegalese state. Commenting on the current position of Portuguese and its Creole, the text intends to point out the factors which have contributed to the decline in the use of the latter and which have, on the other hand, favoured the revival of Portuguese itself.
O texto, de índole socio-histórica, explica como se formou o caráter duplo luso-francês na região da Casamansa, no sul do Senegal, sublinhando o papel da língua portuguesa na sua formação. Esboça a história do território e mostra como ela determinou a especificidade étnica e cultural da região, onde, na segunda metade do século XX, veio a germinar um sentimento de separatismo. Dedica-se também ao papel da língua portuguesa através dos séculos e ao aparecimento de um seu crioulo, tentando mostrar como ambos serviram de instrumento de comunicação durante toda a história e como o seu papel mudou com a independência do estado senegalense. Comentando a posição atual de português e desse seu crioulo, o texto pretende mostrar que fatores têm contribuído para o declínio do uso do crioulo e têm, por outro lado, favorecido a revitalização da presença do próprio português.

Designing in a historical context should be an approach for finding a compromise between current needs and a heritage of the place. If successfulness of results can be an object of subjective assessment, the method itself seems possible to be objectively framed. This article aims to shortly present project of revalorization of The Caste Hill in Sanok as a case study of methods of creating architecture in place of reach but not always clear history.

Opis:: This study is based on the manuscript of the doctoral dissertation “Hydronymy of the Ostravice River Basin”, which takes as its thematic and methodological starting-point a project by Slovak linguists entitled “Hydronymia Slovaciae”; this project aims to produce a complete description of Slovak hydronymy applying consistent methodology, and it forms part of the European “Hydronymia Europaea” project. Although Czech toponomastics has not yet officially joined this project (or declared an intention to join it), research in Czech hydronymy and hydronomastics nevertheless has a long tradition.This study offers a critical commented overview of Czech hydronomastic literature from the earliest attempts (naive texts or folk etymologies), through 19th-century studies, to more recent research which seeks to understand hydronyms in their broader context, especially in terms of their communicative functions. The study also mentions important (mainly historical) cartographic sources recording Czech hydronyms. One of the appendices to the above-mentioned dissertation is a complete bibliography of studies, articles, Master’s theses and other publications that are in some way relevant to Czech hydronymy.

Opis:: The article offers a brief overview of the most prominent landmarks in the development of Cognitive Linguistics. It starts with the very inception of the field in the late 70s as a strong reaction against a doctrine of generative linguistics dominating at that time. Later the paper describes the cornerstone theories which were at the onset of this linguistic enterprise. From the very beginning the movement was rather diverse and still cannot be defined as one unified theory; however, there has always been one common factor in its approaches which is the centrality of meaning in language study. The works of the second wave of cognitive linguists, which are also outlined in the article, focused even more increasingly on cognitive functions providing insights into the nature and organization of human thoughts. Nowadays the postulates of Cognitive Linguistics are applied not only to all levels of language study but extended to other scientific areas.

Opis:: The study analyzes the relation between religion and art in the world, and in Slovak modernist literature. It also examines religion and art from the point of view of its scholarly reception in the context of European literature. It builds on the division of artists of religious orientation based on Bernhard Rang’s two types:a) Claudelian and b) Green-ian. A part of the study provides new insights into Slovak literary modernism. Despite the expectation that modernism would exclude Christian works of literature, the opposite happened:modernism tested Christian works of art and emphasized their ability to capture the subtle aspects of human existence. In this way, a weakness of modernism was exposed: its degenerative function when it focuses only on material aspects. A historical overview has shown that Slovak intellectuals were used to living in an alternative cultural environment and nurturing an alternative culture. This experience proved useful to them in the 20th century, particularly after 1945. During communist rule, the underground church played a major role in Poland and in Slovakia. In Slovakia, Catholic dissidents were of great importance to the developments that led to theVelvet Revolution in November 1989.
