Opis:
The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is believed to be a common parasite of almost all endothermic animals and humans. However, recent reports of toxoplasmosis in marine mammals raise concern that cold-blooded animals may also be a potential source of T. gondii infection. The article discusses the presence of T. gondii in aquatic and terrestrial poikilothermic animals, which may be important elements in the transmission of the parasite.

Several aspects of the ecology of oospores of Phytophthora infestans were studied in the Netherlands using both observational and experimental methods. Following the introduction of a genetically variable late blight population in Europe during the 1970s, P. infestans epidemics have become more severe, leading to an increase in fungicide use in many potato production areas in Northwestern Europe. In the Netherlands, oospores are readily produced in unsprayed crops and volunteer potatoes and their incidence varied from 78% to 15% of sampled leaflets with two or more lesions, for the northeastern and southwestern region in 2000, respectively. A fungicide application following infection of plants with an A1 and A2 mating type strain significantly reduced the number of oospores produced as well as oospore viability. Several alternative hosts facilitating oospore formation have been identified in the Netherlands: S. nigrum, S. dulcamara and S. sisymbriifolium. The impact of oospores on late blight epidemics is discussed.

Opis:
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a process that allows genetic material to flow between even distantly related organisms. It is primarily observed in bacteria and protists but also in different lineages of eucaryotes. The first HGT cases in plants were discovered at the beginning of the 21st century and have been intensively studied ever since. Researchers have placed particular emphasis on the plant kingdom, especially parasitic plants. This review presents the current state of knowledge about this phenomenon in plants, with a special focus on parasitic plants. Among the described factors facilitating HGT, close physical contact between organisms is believed to be one of the most important. It is noted especially in the case of parasitism and similar relationships. For that reason, reported occurrences of this phenomenon in holoparasites, hemiparasites, and mycoheterotrophic plants are compared. The mechanisms responsible for HGT in plants still remain unclear, however, the studies described here suggest that both DNA and RNA may play a role as a carrier in that process. Also, the transfer between genomes of different organelles in the cell, intracellular gene transfer (IGT), and its relationships with HGT are described. The occurrence of the HGT and IGT phenomena concerning different genomes: nuclear, mitochondrial, and plastid is discussed in the review. Finally, some future areas of research in the field are proposed.

Opis:
One of the longest Latin inscriptions in Poznań can be found on a marble plaque in the Corpus Christi Church. It dates from the second half of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century. Its text is the so-called ‘legend of the three hosts’, which were allegedly bought and desecrated by Jews living in Poznań in the Middle Ages. The legend therefore features strong anti-Jewish content. The purpose of this article is to present the inscription, its translation into Polish, and a commentary.

Abstract in Polish
It has been experimentally found that Carpoglyphus lactis (L.) and Thyreophaeus entomophagus (Laboulbene) are to some extent resistant to some ecological factors, approximate to those in the alimentary canals of vertebrates (oxygen-free atmosphere, liquid habitat, 0.5% HCl and temperature + 36°C). Therefore it can be assumed that the mites consumed together with food may pass alive through the alimentary canal of stenothermic organisms. This has been proved experimentally and it was found that 1-7% of living mites passed through the alimentary canals of mice and birds. This proves the possibility of dispersion of mites also in an endozoic way by various animals, which are their vectors.

Opis:
Fungi classified into the genus Malassezia, are opportunistic pathogens with high clinical importance in veterinary medicine. The major disease entities associated with these yeasts, include dermatological conditions, e.g. otitis externa, pododermatitis, and dermatitis seborrhoica. Fungi from the genus Malassezia have a wide species-specific range of hosts, where they are present in either commensal or infectious state. There is a number of scientific reports describing diseases caused by these yeasts in cats, dogs, horses, goats, pigs and rabbits. To date, 18 species have been identified, including 17 lipid-dependent and 1 lipid-independent species, with M.pachydermatis isolated from animals most frequently. The lipid dependency of Malassezia spp., results from their inability to synthesize myristic acid, which is a precursor of long-chain fatty acids. The dimorphic Malassezia fungi can occur in natural conditions in both mycelial and yeast phases. In turn, the yeast stage dominates, when they are cultivated under in vitro conditions. The fungus reproduces by budding on a wide base from the same site on one pole (unipolar blastic growth); hence, yeast-like cells in vitro resemble bottles. The recommended treatment of these fungal infections is based on the use of shampoo with 2% miconazole and 2% chlorhexidine, twice a week. Additionally, as shown by research data, itraconazole and ketoconazole have high in vitro efficacy against all Malassezia species, whereas fluconazole and voriconazole exert a very weak effect. In this article a current research is presented, that is focused on the sequence analysis of the genomes of different Malassezia species, which may provide key information required for faster diagnosis, elucidation of the biochemical mechanisms of skin adaptation, and formulation of new drugs.
