Opis:
The presented study concerns development of a facial detection algorithm operating robustly in the thermal infrared spectrum. The paper presents a brief review of existing face detection algorithms, describes the experiment methodology and selected algorithms. For the comparative study of facial detection three methods presenting three different approaches were chosen, namely the Viola-Jones, YOLOv2 and Faster-RCNN. All these algorithms were investigated along with various configurations and parameters and evaluated using three publicly available thermal face datasets. The comparison of the original results of various experiments for the selected algorithms is presented.

Opis:
A modification of the descriptor in a human detector using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) is presented. The proposed modification requires inserting the values of average cell brightness resulting in the increase of the descriptor length from 3780 to 3908 values, but it is easy to compute and instantly gives ≈ 25% improvement of the miss rate at 10‒4 False Positives Per Window (FPPW). The modification has been tested on two versions of HOG-based descriptors: the classic Dalal-Triggs and the modified one, where, instead of spatial Gaussian masks for blocks, an additional central cell has been used. The proposed modification is suitable for hardware implementations of HOG-based detectors, enabling an increase of the detection accuracy or resignation from the use of some hardware-unfriendly operations, such as a spatial Gaussian mask. The results of testing its influence on the brightness changes of test images are also presented. The descriptor may be used in sensor networks equipped with hardware acceleration of image processing to detect humans in the images.

Opis:
In this work the human detection method in infrared has been presented. The proposed solution focuses on the use low-level features and detecting parts of the human body. Low–level processing is based on modified HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) algorithm. First, the only squared cells have been used, also calculation of the gradient has been improved. Next, the model of the head from the dataset IR (Infra Red) images has been created, also the model of the human body. Finally, the probability matrix has been examined using minimal distance classifier. The novelty of the proposed solution focuses on the combination of the pixel-gradient and body parts processing, also three stage classification process (head modelling, human modelling and classifier), which has been proposed to reduce the false detection. The experiments were performed on self-created IR images database, which contains images with most of the possible difficult situations such as overlapped people, different pose, small and high resolution of the people. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated using Precision and Recall quality measure.

Opis:
With the development of automation in ports, the video surveillance systems with automated human detection begun to be applied in open-air handling operation areas for safety and security. The accuracy of traditional human detection based on the video camera is not high enough to meet the requirements of operation surveillance. One of the key reasons is that Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features of the human body will show great different between front & back standing (F&B) and side standing (Side) human body. Therefore, the final training for classifier will only gain a few useful specific features which have contribution to classification and are insufficient to support effective classification, while using the HOG features directly extracted by the samples from different human postures. This paper proposes a two-stage classification method to improve the accuracy of human detection. In the first stage, during preprocessing classification, images is mainly divided into possible F&B human body and not F&B human body, and then they were put into the second-stage classification among side human and non-human recognition. The experimental results in Tianjin port show that the two-stage classifier can improve the classification accuracy of human detection obviously.

Opis:
Together with the development of effective and efficient people identification algorithms, biometric authentication systems become increasingly popular and widespread, leading to a significant growth in the number of institutions interested in implementing and using such systems. Although, several research works focused their efforts on these type of solutions, none of the commonly available systems provide a non-cooperative approach to object identification. For this reason, they are not suitable for use in some specific situations, such as people entering the stadium. Therefore, we decided to go up against these limitations and develop biometric identification system for less constrained scenarios. In this paper, we present an evaluation of different algorithms suitable for human silhouette detection in such environment. We focus on investigating their effectiveness and performance under unconstrained conditions, such as different lighting.

Opis:
The influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the distribution of sand grain size along sandy beaches is assessed, based on study of three spits of the southeastern Baltic Sea: the Curonian, Vistula and the Hel. 330 sand samples were collected from the beach and foredune at 1 km intervals. Our findings show that although the three spits have some characteristics in common, e.g. a predominance of fine- and medium-grained marine sand on their beaches and foredunes, the grain size distribution patterns of the recent sediments along these spits differ significantly. The key factors determining the grain size distribution include the dominant hydrometeorological regime, anthropogenic activity and geological framework. Trends in the mean grain size differentiation along the Vistula and Curonian spits directly correlate with the direction of the longshore sediment transport: as the distance from sources of the longshore sediment transport increases, the size of sand particles, both on the beach and the foredune, decreases. By contrast, on the Hel Spit, this pattern is disturbed in areas of hydrotechnical construction and artificial beach nourishment. Sand differentiation along the beach can also be predetermined by the geological framework, particularly in lithologically anomalous sections, such as the Juodkrantè settlement on the Curonian Spit.

Opis:
The paper presents a research concerning the issue of visualization of blood vessels in the human body. In the initial phase of the investigations the focus was on understanding the optical properties of human body tissues. Optical transmittance of human skin was measured. Skin transmittance reaches the maximum at around 670–850 nm and 970–1100 nm. The optimal wavelength suitable for work in reflected and transmitted light was chosen. It was based on extracting blood vessels from the image for using them further in a developed system. A unique measuring system with an integrated illuminator and highly sensitive light detectors for medical imaging and stereoscopic observation was created. The high usable value of the developed system was largely gained by the original numerical program for development of measurement results. The elaborated system of blood vessels’ visualization is a mobile device. It was tested for imaging subcutaneous blood vessels. Three-dimensional observation of circulation and microcirculation in subcutaneous breast tissues is possible. Practical tests of the elaborated device for blood vessels’ medical stereoscopic observations were presented. Tests at a wavelength of 850 nm were performed. It is planned to conduct patient tests in the future at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute - Oncology Center (MSCI), the Branch in Gliwice, Poland.

Opis:
The coliform group has been used extensively as an indicator of water quality and has historically led to the public health protection concept. Total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, for example in soil or vegetation, as well as the intestines of mammals, including humans. Total coliform bacteria are not likely to cause illness, but their presence indicates that the water supply may be vulnerable to contamination by more harmful microorganisms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the only member of the total coliform group of bacteria that is found only in the intestines of mammals, including humans. The presence of E. coli in water indicates recent fecal contamination and may indicate the possible presence of disease-causing pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Although most strains of E. coli bacteria are harmless, certain strains, such as E.coli 0157:H7, may cause illness. About 80 % of communicable diseases in the world are waterborne. According to WHO estimate about 80 % of water pollution in developing country, like India is carried by domestic waste. In India 70 % of the water is seriously polluted and 75 % of illness and 80 % of the child mortality is attributed to water pollution. The improper management of water systems may cause serious problems in availability and quality of water. The major pathogenic bacteria responsible for water borne disease are spread by the faeco-oral route, in which water may play an intermediate role. The aim of this review is to examine methods currently in use for the detection of coliforms in drinking water and also to evaluate the possible health hazards associated with drinking water contaminated with coliforms.

Safety of household robots : ethical doubts
Autorzy:
Gunia, Artur
Opis:
The prevalence of household robots is growing steadily year by year. However, in human-robot interaction (HRI), which involves issuing commands to manipulate objects in a given scene, uncertain and dangerous situations may arise. This paper aims to provide a social and ethical viewpoint on the detection of hazardous situation in the scene. I argue that using only machine learning methods may be insufficient to protect ethically questionable situations. To mitigate ethical concerns effectively, a comprehensive approach that integrates multiple modalities and considers contextual nuances is imperative.
