Opis:
Internal combustion engines yet have not exhausted their development possibilities in the range of economy and ecology demands. Development of SI and CI engines, which several years ago proceeded individually in-parallel, now becomes likely in common: one type of engine shares some features with the other one, e.g. direct injection, electronically controlled injectors, electronic control unit etc. However, type of ignition and mixture formation are still different (spark assisted ignition versus auto ignition and homogeneous mixture versus heterogeneous). HCCI engine overcomes this difference. At present HCCI engine uses both type of ignition modes and both types of mixture in different ranges of operational parameters. Direct injection during compression stroke and stratified charge are characteristics for low and mild power resulting in low emission of CO and HC as well as NOx. Combustion is initiated by spark when mixture is very poor. For maximum load and speed, auto-ignition of homogeneous stoichiometric mixture takes place in the whole volume of combustion chamber. Due to the absence of flame and low temperature, nitrogen oxides, of which molecules arise in post flame zone, are low. Also emission of CO and HC are low due to stoichiometry of the mixture. The key problem is controlled auto-ignition as a function of speed and load (fully HCCI engine). Several methods of auto-ignition control (CAI) are discussed in this paper.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis presented in the paper is the idea and implementation method of the ignition point of homogeneous air-fuel mixture, used in the IC engine with HCCI system. Autoignition of the combustible mixture can occur only upon reaching the characteristic self-ignition temperature Tz. It should take place during (near end) the load compression. In order to achieve the fuel mixture ignition temperature Tz in the system, usually it is proposed adjusting the engine compression ratio, epsilon. However, it is quite cumbersome especially in case of frequent changes of engine load (there are also difficulties with the precise advance angle adjusting of fuel mixture ignition). According to our conception, the other method of autoignition adjustment can be successfully applied. The essence of the new idea consists in proper selection, according to engine load, of the exponent k of charge polytropic compression. Introducing the defined dose of monoatomic gas (e.g. argon Ar,k almost equal 1.667) to air-fuel mixture, the higher values of the polytropic compression exponent .. of working medium can be achieved. It will result in significant increase of the temperature rise Delta Tmax of the compressed charge and accordingly progressive increase of the advance angle of the mixture ignition.

Opis:
Natural gas is well-suited as a fuel in the transport sector. Due to its excellent combustion characteristics, engines operating with compressed natural gas (CNG) reach high efficiency, especially if operated at lean conditions. However, CNG engine research mainly focusses on stoichiometric conditions in order to use a three-way catalytic converter for the exhaust gas after treatment system. With the objective to explore the potential of CNG engines operated at lean conditions, a turbo-charged CNG engine with high compression ratio is developed and optimized for lean operation. In order to increase the ignition energy, the CNG engine is equipped with scavenged pre-chambers. A specific control structure is developed, which allows to operate the engine at a pre-defined (lean) air-to-fuel ratio. Further functionalities such as the combustion placement control and algorithms to estimate the conditions inside of the prechamber are implemented. The first part of this paper describes this engine control structure, which is specifically developed for the lean-burn CNG engine. In the second part, the effects of pre-chamber scavenging on engine performance criteria such as the combustion stability, engine efficiency or engine emissions are analyzed. With the objective to use pre-chamber scavenging to improve engine performance, a scavenging feedback control strategy is proposed. In order to control the ignition delay, this strategy adapts the amount of CNG injected into the prechamber with a linear controller or an extremum seeking algorithm depending on the air-to-fuel ratio of the main chamber.

An engine of a race car is exposed to permanent modifications. As a result of realised modifications, the engine's parameters are still changing. A correct control of the supply of such engine needs many corrections of the single parameters and sometimes also of the algorithms used. The structure and functioning of the programmable controller for combustion engines with spark ignition, designed for the tanned sports cars there is presented in the paper. The method of connection of the computer with the target system has been presented in the first part. The second part has been dedicated to data structures and the working algorithms of the controller. The newest version of the computer presented in the paper seems to be a solution that meets all requirements concerning controllers used in race car engines. The enormous advantage of the solution is its universality, obtained thanks to the possibility of defining of main parameters within target system software, the most important being: the number and the layout of cylinders, construction of the pulse wheel and the structure of fuel and ignition systems. The user can chose different algorithms, concerning for instance the way of control of the injectors. The algorithms can be chosen according to the equipment of a given car as well as the user's preferences.

Opis:
Growing safety, pollution and comfort requirements influence automotive industry ever more. The use of three-way catalysts in exhaust aftertreatment systems of combustion engines is essential in reducing engine emissions to levels demanded by environmental legislation. However, the key to the optimal catalytic conversion level is to keep the engine air/fuel ratio (AFR) at a desired level. Thus, for this purposes more and more sophisticated AFR control algorithms are intensively investigated and tested in the literature. The goal of this paper is to present for a case of a gasoline engine the model predictive AFR controller based on the multiple-model approach to the engine modeling. The idea is to identify the engine in particular working points and then to create a global engine's model using Sugeno fuzzy logic. Opposite to traditional control approaches which lose their quality beside steady state, it enables to work with satisfactory quality mainly in transient regimes. Presented results of the multiple-model predictive air/fuel ratio control are acquired from the first experimental real-time implementation on the VW Polo 1390 cm3 gasoline engine, at which the original electronic control unit (ECU) has been fully replaced by a dSpace prototyping system which execute the predictive controller. Required control performance has been proven and is presented in the paper.

Opis:
The paper presents the problem of testing the ignition system controlled by the engine controller. The aim of the diagnostic tests to determine the state of efficiency of the ignition system. The basic test using conventional methods and common tools of measurement is not sufficient. Fuller investigation in the ignition system is feasible. For this purpose, measurements are carried out control signals in the ignition system, eg. Ignition timing or a short time. On the basis of these measurements are plotted "working maps". Knowledge of the "working map" in the next stage of research are the basis for the analysis of the results from the measurement data contained in databases such service. Maintenance base "Autodata". Method for the diagnosis relies mainly on checking the correctness of signal parameters studied with the calibrating signals contained in the database service.

Opis:
Mixture preparation and combustion processes in internal combustion engines are very complex and very difficult to investigate. These processes run very quickly and their parameters are changed quickly and in wide ranges. Therefore, the interpretation of measurement results is very difficult and uncertain. The visualization methods applied in the combustion researches can help to interpret the results. For many years, the visualization methods have been developed at the Aircraft Engine Department of Heat Engineering Institute of Warsaw University of Technology, in the field of combustion in engines, detonation and gas dynamics research. In these researches, different method of registration of very fast changes of combustion were applied. The combustion experiments have been performed in constant volume bomb, rapid compression machines and experimental visualisation engines. In the last case, the electronic digital camera of Photram SA 1.3 has been used. This paper refers to the experiments, which were conducted using rapid compression machine. Their goal was explanation the combustion mechanism in combustion system with semi-open combustion chamber under different parameters of this system. The obtained results show a strong influence of combustion system parameters on combustion mechanism, especially on a compression ratio and ignition timing. The strong swirls were registered at all sharp edges on combustion chamber during compression stroke. These swirls had a strong influence on the combustion system operation.

Opis:
The attempts to increase the engine combustion efficiency of the spark ignition (SI) engines have led to development of the new combustion system with semi-open combustion chamber. This system is similar to flame jet ignition systems, which were applied in many production internal combustion engines. The similar pulsed jet combustion system was elaborated by Professor A. K. Oppenheim. In the system developed at Aircraft Engine Department of Warsaw University of Technology (AED) the standard combustion chamber of SI engine was divided on prechamber and main combustion chamber using partition. The ignition in prechamber is more reliable and repeatable but total burning time in the prechamber and main combustion chamber is shorter than in standard combustion chamber. The principal problem of efficient operation of this system and obtaining of the required performance is securing the relevant control strategy. The performances of this system are dependent from: the rate of this prechamber volume to total combustion chamber volume, the orifice diameter in a partition, the ignition place and the ignition advance angle (ignition timing). Among these parameters the ignition timing only may be varied in the continuous manner during the engine operations without of the engine disassembling. Therefore constant values separate parameters (prechamber volume, orifice diameter, ignition place) should be selected in comprehensive, time consuming researches for different engine operation conditions (engine speed, load and environment conditions) and subsequently the map of ignition advance angles should be determined at state remaining separate parameters. The values of the ignition advance angle should be selected and programmed in electronic control unit, which will be control the ignition advance angle at different engine operating conditions. The dependences between engine operating parameters and the ignition timing are not linear and therefore mechanical control system is not effective. Some research results concerning the best engine operating parameters has been presented in this paper.
