Opis:: In this article we will subject visual forms of entry presentation found in monolingual learner's dictionaries to critical contrastive analysis. The characteristics of dictionaries under discussion, especially those addressed to foreign users, make them an essential language learning aid. The aim of the analysis is to identify which entries are effectively illustrated to constitute an effectual support of a verbal definition, and how it is achieved. The results of the analysis will indicate the possibilities and limits of illustrating concepts in dictionaries.

Opis:: Ovid’s Metamorphoses has inspired artists of various disciplines almost from the very moment of its creation. The poem has been the literary canvas of many paintings. It was particularly popular in the early modern period. Its numerous editions from the Middle Ages were decorated first with miniatures, and, after the invention of printing, with illustrations, made in the technique of woodcut, copperplate engraving, and etching. The composition of scenes known from the poem was based on a simultaneous and multi-thread narration and also, later, focused on one specific moment of the selected episode. The authorship of the illustrations found in early editions remains anonymous. The graphic designers of 16th c. and later editions are known by name: Jörg Wickram, Virgilio Solis, Bernard Solomon, Hendrick Goltzius, Francis Cleyn, Salomon Savery, Godfried Maes, and in the 20th c. Pablo Picasso. Ovid’s poem continues to be interpretated, as evidenced by the works of, for example, Kiki Smith and the Polish queer artist Mikolaj Sobczak.

W drugim rozdziale zostali przedstawieni artyści, których dziełami inspirował się Daniel Mróz. Rozdział trzeci jest analizą ilustracji pod kątem ich zsynchronizowania z treścią książki, w której się znajdują. Rozdział podzielony jest na części odpowiadające pisarzom lub poetom, których teksty były ilustrowane. Zakończenie jest podsumowaniem odpowiedzi na postawione pytania badawcze, najważniejsze z nich dotyczy alegorycznej bądź dosłownej wymowy prac Daniela Mroza w kontekście ich powiązania z treścią książek, które ilustrują.
The main purpose of this thesis is presentation the works of Daniel Mróz, especially in the books which he illustrated. The thesis shows the specific features of the Mróz’s work, includes a comparison to the work of other painters, and shows how and where Mróz's illustrations reflect their content. The first chapter discusses the style of Daniel Mróz's illustrations and the artistic methods he used. The second chapter features artists who were inspiration for Daniel Mróz. Chapter three is an analysis of the illustration in terms of their synchronization with the content of the book. The chapter is divided into sections corresponding to the writers or poets whose texts were illustrated. The conclusion is a summary of the responses to the research questions, the most important of them, concerns the allegorical or literal meaning of Daniel Mróz's works in the context of their association with the content of the books illustrated.

Opis:: The thesis aims to address the huge role that illustrations have in books for children. The individual chapters are focused on specific publications published in Poland over the last ten years. The categories by which the books were organized were highlighted: learning about the world, touch, coping with loss, establishing relationships, experiencing loneliness, and searching for one's own identity. The thesis establishes the criteria that a book must meet to become a valuable aesthetic and educational object.
Niniejsza praca ma na celu poruszenie kwestii ogromnej roli, jaką pełnią ilustracje w książkach dla dzieci. Poszczególne rozdziały skupiały się na konkretnych publikacjach wydanych w Polsce na przestrzeni ostatnich dziesięciu lat. Wyodrębnione zostały kategorie, według których uporządkowane zostały książki: poznawanie świata, dotyk, radzenie sobie ze stratą, nawiązywanie relacji, doświadczanie samotności, szukanie własnej tożsamości. W pracy wyznaczone zostały kryteria jakie musi spełniać książka by stać się wartościowym przedmiotem estetycznym i edukacyjnym.

Opis:: My paper deals with Veselye kartinki (Merry Pictures), a monthly children’s cartoon magazine launched by the Komsomol in 1956 and dedicated to the youngest generations of the “new socialists” (age 4–8). In its heydays in the early 1980s the magazine reached a circulation of 9,5 million, which indicates that Merry Pictures had become an essential part of post-Stalinist childhood. Generations of small readers found it attractive for several reasons. The journal was indeed comparatively “merry” und funny – not least because it was exempt from censorship, and so it was the only publication of that kind in the Soviet Union. Moreover, among its illustrators were a number of artists who are today well known for their participation in the nonconformist art scene (for example Ilya Kabakov and Victor Pivovarov), which gave the merry pictures their specific visual quality. The magazine proved to be an “image machine” even after the end of the Soviet Union. It survived the Soviet childhood by a good two decades and granted its characters, the little folks, an afterlife in the mass culture of the new Russia. However, this is not only the story of the magazine and its attempt to visually shape a newly created concept, arising with the Thaw, of a merry childhood that entered the currently emerging canon of visual socialism. Rather, there are two other, contradictory understandings of Merry Pictures and its Merry Folks’ Club that can be found currently. According to one, the Merry Folks are considered the first Soviet comic heroes, who were correspondingly free of politics and harmless for their readership. The other regards them as socialist “pathos formulas” in a format for children that populate the art of Moscow Conceptualists as thoroughly ideological Soviet symbols. This paper attempts to augment these two selective “remnants” with the primary history of Merry Pictures and demonstrate a productive arsenal of images and figures was developed over a half-century, precisely in the tension between everyday free spaces and political stipulations.

Opis:: The main objective of my research is to prove the thesis that children are taught the stereotypical perception of the world start with schools. One of the basic tools of this process are the schoolbooks and images contained therein. The research material includes publications from the years 1969 – 2013. Illustrations of these books have been analyzed at three levels themes: gender stereotypes, stereotypes of professions and ways of presenting the family.
Praca podejmuje tematykę stereotypów płciowych obecnych na ilustracjach w podręcznikach dla klas 1 - 3 szkoły podstawowej. Głównym celem moich badań jest udowodnienie tezy, iż dziecko już od najmłodszych lat jest uczone stereotypowego postrzegania otaczającego go świata, a jednym z podstawowych narzędzi tego procesu są podręczniki szkolne. Materiał badawczy obejmuje publikacje z lat 1969 – 2013, których obrazki zostały poddane analizie na trzech płaszczyznach tematycznych: stereotypy płciowe, zawodowe i sposoby ukazywania rodziny. Ponadto badania zawierają także dodatek interpretacyjny dotyczący nowego bezpłatnego podręcznika, który został wprowadzony do użytku we wrześniu 2014 roku.

Opis:: Mapy pojawiają się w powieściach już od XVIII wieku. Można je znaleźć przede wszystkim w książkach dla dzieci i młodzieży, czy też w powieściach z gatunku literatury fantasy czy science fiction. Mapy jednak pojawiają się również w innych gatunkowo książkach, jak na przykład powieści detektywistyczne, kryminały, czy nawet literatura faktu. Wielu pisarzy umieszcza mapy w swoich powieściach, szczególnie jeśli chodzi o fantastykę, jednak niektórzy otwarcie wyrażają sprzeciw przeciwko przekładaniu swojej wizji kreowanego świata na mniej lub bardziej kartograficzną wizualizację. Poniższa praca przytacza argumenty opowiadające się zarówno za umieszczaniem map w powieściach, jak i przeciwko takim działaniom. Praca ta jest próbą, po pierwsze usystematyzowania podziału map, ze względu na zakres przedstawianego terytorium, autorstwo danej mapy, świat przedstawiony, oraz relację między mapą a postaciami. Po drugie stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania stawiane zarówno przez twórców, jak i czytelników książek, a mianowicie czy mapy są koniecznym elementem w powieściach, lub czy w ogóle powinny się one znajdować w książkach.
Maps have been appearing in novels since the 18th century. They can be found primarily in books for children and adolescents, or in novels of the genre of fantasy or science fiction. Maps however, also appear in other genres, such as detective novels, crime novels, and even non-fiction literature. Many writers put maps in their novels, especially when it comes to fantasy, but some openly express opposition to translating their vision of the created world into more or less cartographic visualization. The following work brings up arguments in favor of placimg the maps in novels and against such actions. This work is an attempt to firstly systematize the grouping of maps, because of the range of the presented territory, the authorship of a given map, the world presented world, and the relation between the map and the characters. Secondly, it tries to answer the questions posed by both creators and readers of books, namely whether maps are a necessary element in novels, or whether they should be in books at all.

It contains collected informations on the appearance of an idea for a book-comic for children (as told by Makuszyński’s wife – Janina, Marian Walentynowicz, Jan Gebethner), through the actual process of writing, the first edition and post-war issue. Opis:: Moral education is one of the tasks of catechesis (cf. General Directory for Catechesis, No. 85-86). Te aim of this article is to analyze the importance of illustrations in moral upbringing of children in early school age. Te study is based on textbooks for religious instruction for pupils in grades I, II and III of primary school in Poland. Two series of handbooks have been examined: 1) issued by the publishing house “Wydawnictwo sw. Stanislawa” in Krakow and 2) issued by WAM publishing house in Krakow. Firstly, the importance of illustrations in school textbooks has been recalled, then all the images under consideration were listed and described in their content and adequacy for the moral education of children in early school age. Tis was done for the two mentioned series of catechisms. Te further analysis took place against the background of teaching methodology as well as the curriculum for catechesis. It shows that two series of catechisms vary signiﬁcantly in terms of place and meaning attributed to the illustrations. In the textbooks published by “Wydawnictwo sw. Stanislawa” the iconic content dominates the text and is the starting point for the implementation of the lesson topic. Te textbooks published by WAM contain smaller illustrations are more of text, however the images are complementary to text or provide new information. Further development of textbooks for religious instruction in early childhood education must be based on the principle of primacy of illustration over the text. Images must be ﬂawless in terms of quality, aesthetics and printing.
Wychowanie moralne jest jednym z zadań katechezy (Dyrektorium ogólne o katechizacji, nr 85-86). Celem artykułu jest analiza znaczenia ilustracji w wychowaniu moralnym dzieci w młodszym wieku szkolnym. Materiałem do badań są podręczniki do nauki religii dla uczniów klas I, II i III szkoły podstawowej wydane przez wydawnictwo św. Stanisława w Krakowie oraz wydawnictwo WAM. Artykuł przypomina znaczenie ilustracji w podręcznikach szkolnych, a następnie zawiera tabelaryczne zestawienie i opis ilustracji z tych katechez, które dotyczą formacji moralnej w dwóch wymienionych seriach katechizmów. Analiza odbywa się na tle założeń metodycznych i treści podstawy programowej katechezy. Wynika z niej, że katechizmy różnią się wyraźnie pod względem miejsca i znaczenia, jakie przypisują ilustracjom. W podręcznikach wydawnictwa św. Stanisława warstwa ikoniczna dominuje nad tekstem i jest punktem wyjścia dla realizacji tematu lekcji. W podręcznikach wydawnictwa WAM jest więcej tekstu, a ilustracje są mniejsze, stanowią uzupełnienie tekstu lub podają nowe informacje. Dalszy rozwój podręczników do nauki religii w edukacji wczesnoszkolnej musi opierać się na zasadzie pierwszeństwa ilustracji nad tekstem. Materiał obrazowy musi być bez zarzutu pod względem jakości, pod względem estetycznym i technicznym.
