Opis:
Personal resources are an important factor contributing to health and the quality of life. Their role is even greater in difficult situations, such as the ones experienced by individuals with visual and auditory impairments/deficits. The research was to diagnise personal resources of adults with isual and auditory impairments/deficits. These resources were analysed in terms of the meanig of life, self-assessment, and social support. Research was conducted with 80 respondents aged 20-30, where 40 respondents were visually impaired, and 40 respondents were auditorily impaired. Instruments used: The Meanig of Life Scale by J.C. Crumbaugh and K.T. Maholicka, A Questionnaire of Social Support by J.S. Norbeck, a Self-Assessment Scale by W.H. Fitts, and author’s own questionnarie. Research findings reveal certain divergences between groups in terms of the analysed resources, with the most significant ones in the sphere of self-assessment.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether spontaneous retrieval deficits could be found in individuals with Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI). The sample consisted of 52 participants over 65 years of age (mean age = 76.00; SD = 7.48) with 11 males. We asked 26 individuals with SCI and 26 individuals without SCI to perform a prospective memory (PM) task that had previously demonstrated spontaneous retrieval deficits in individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment. The results did not demonstrate the expected differences in a PM task based on spontaneous retrieval [t(50) = −.05; p = .964, d = .01]. However, participants’ mood did predict their subjective memory complaints (β = −.51; p < .001) and their subjective assessment of their future memory performance (r = −.38; p < .01). The findings are in line with numerous studies which have shown that SCI is more related to mood disturbance than to objective cognitive functioning.

Opis:
Introduction: The early detection and diagnosis of dementia are of key importance in treatment, slowing disease progression, or suppressing symptoms. The possible role of changes in the sense of smell is considered with regard to potential markers for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Materials and methods: A literature search was conducted using the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science between May 30, 2022 and August 2, 2022. The term “dementia” was searched with keyword combinations related to olfaction. Results: A total of 1,288 records were identified through the database search. Of these articles, 49 were ultimately included in the analysis. The results showed the potential role of changes in the sense of smell as potential biomarkers for early detection of AD. Multiple studies have shown that olfactory impairment may be observed in patients with AD, PD, MCI, or other types of dementia. Even though smell tests are able to detect olfactory loss caused by neurodegenerative diseases, they cannot reliably distinguish between certain diseases. Conclusions: In individuals with cognitive impairment or neurodegenerative diseases, olfactory assessment has repeatedly been reported to be used for early diagnosis, but not for differential diagnosis.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify and describe the function of resilience factors in families of children with hearing impairment. The research sample included 54 families. The definition of time data, the time interval between the first parents’ suspicion and completion of the diagnostic process and the time interval between the diagnosis and provision of first compensation aid, may be seen as the most significant outcomes. The results show that stability and pro-social elements are not affected by the structure of the family, nor by the educational level or religiousness of the parents. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the communication burden affecting the family of a child with hearing impairment is lower in children whose parents became aware of the hearing defi ciency at the child’s lower age, and significantly lower if the hearing impairment was diagnosed before the 12th month of the child’s age. In terms of the social impact of the child’s hearing impairment on the family it was demonstrated that the income level significantly affects the impact of the child’s hearing impairment on social life, and also that the religiosity of parents has no effect on eliminating the negative perception of the hearing impairment.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present article was to make a narrative review about the relation of cognitive functions and neurotrophic factors with aging. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem concerns the issue of aging and the changes in cognitive and biochemical functioning that may occur in this process. The article uses the method of critical analyzes as well as the analyzes of the reference literature. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The first section of the article discusses population aging, the second addresses changes related to cognitive functions during aging. The third part show biochemical aspects that can directly influence the cognitive functions already mentioned, and on aging in general. RESEARCH RESULTS: The result of this review points out that the world population is aging in an accelerated way and during this process of aging there are several changes in the organism of the elderly, among which stand out the cognitive and biochemical, one being directly related to the other. In this case, there is a relation of the neurotrophic factors, which may be responsible for the changes in cognitive functions, specifically spatial memory alterations. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It is necessary that more studies be carried out with this population, which may trace the elderly with cognitive impairment that may be suggestive or conclusive of a neurodegenerative disease. In addition, biochemical data may contribute to the search for new therapeutic models or early identification for Alzheimer’s disease or other associated dementias.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Recently, data has indicated a higher incidence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients with diabetes. Old age is a risk factor for cognitive deterioration and dementia. The aim of the study was to find the factors associated with poor glycaemic control in type 2 diabetic elderly patients with MCI. Materials and method. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 87 diabetic patients with MCI in an outpatient clinic. All subjects were screened for MCI using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Detailed medical history and collection of blood test samples were performed. Results. 83.9% of participants had poor glycaemic control. A positive correlation was found between HbA1c level and number of visit to a doctor per year, number of co-morbidities, duration of T2DM, triglycerides and fasting glucose level; and a negative correlation between HbA1c level and years of education, HDL cholesterol level and MoCA score. The univariate logistic regression models revealed factors which are associated with poor glycemic control are: less years of education, higher no of visit to doctor per year, increased number of co-morbidities, presence of CVD, retinopathy, higher levels of triglycerides and fasting glucose, lower level of HDL cholesterol, lower MoCA score. Multivariable model revealed that higher plasma levels of fasting glucose and triglycerides are significant predictors. Conclusions. There is a high prevalence of poor glycemic control patients among elderly diabetics with MCI. Higher plasma levels of fasting glucose and triglycerides seems to be the most important predictors of poor glycemic control, however father larger studies are needed to elucidate these relationships.

Application of fMRI in the evaluation and prediction of progress to Alzheimers disease in patients with mild cognitive impairment
Rola czynnościowego obrazowania MR w ocenie i prognozowaniu rozwoju choroby Alzheimera u osób z łagodnymi zaburzeniami poznawczymi
Opis:
New treatment methods for Alzheimer's disease (AD) have recently been tested, making early diagnosis more important. Therapy should be started during the initial stage of the disease in order to achieve the best outcome. This article presents activation paradigms obtained during the fMRI examination of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and the results of fMRI studies done in persons at increased risk of developing AD and during its early stage. The possibility of differentiating AD from other types of dementias and the influence of drug therapy on brain activation in AD patients is also discussed.

Analiza przydatności badań przesiewowych we wczesnym wykrywaniu zaburzeń słuchu u noworodków.
THE SUITABILITY ANALYSIS OF SCREENING IN EARLY DETECTION OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT AMONG NEWBORNS.
Autorzy:
Krzysztofiak, Barbara
Opis:
Making an assessment of a child’s hearing predisposition during the first few months of his or her life as well as its adequate usage is one of the most difficult and most responsible tasks for a team of therapists, that is doctors, speech therapists as well as deaf education doctors. The most important factor in their evaluation is time. The sooner any hearing problems become detected, the chances are for such children to get the most optimal reha-bilitation, to develop correctly and to intergrate in a hearing society. The aim of this thesis was the analysis of screening in early detection of hearing impairment among newborns. What was mainly taken into consideration was the frequency of occurance of hearing impairment based on screening, as well as the frequency of occurance of the risk factors in the analysed group of children and the usefulness of this research.

Opis:
Childhood brain tumour, especially when its treatment begins in early life and causes visual and motor disability, can imply a number of difficulties in spatial orientation, and in cognitive, social and communication areas. The article presents a case study of a 10-year-old boy with low vision. His impairment arose as a consequence of a tumour in deep structures of the right cerebral hemisphere, including the optic chiasm. The aim of the study was to understand how cancer and visual impairment affect the functioning of the boy in question. The study involved the use of tools for functional diagnosis of children with visual impairment. Document analysis, interviewing and observation were also used. The results are consistent with previous studies on the threats to the accomplishment of developmental tasks for children with brain tumour and concomitant neurodevelopmental deficits, as well as reduced psychosocial functioning whose cancer treatment started before the age of 6.

Opis:
The goal of upbringing is affirmation of the student, self-development within the system of values that is recognized by a group and eventually interiorized. A correctly shaped hierarchy of values, which fulfills a regulatory and motivating role, provides favorable conditions for maturation of a young person, gaining autonomy and at the same time integration with society. In the article the results of the research conducted to identify the system of values of youth with hearing impairments are discussed. The position of responsibility, whose essence consists in regulating one’s free conduct, was identified within the hierarchy of values. Responsibility is an instrumental value that is relatively highly valued by youth (rank 3 for hearing youth and rank 4 for youth with hearing impairment), which is a rewarding fact.
